• Setting up a VPN tunnel between a Linux box and a Cisco FW

  Hi. I have a linux box (ubuntu) and I have a service provider that will only allow an IPSEC tunnel connection between his network and my linux box. I have these details from the service provider: Service Provider: Peer IP – Lan on service provider's side - 10.10.10.10/24 Linux box details: Peer IP - Lan - Connection details: Phase1: Sha Aes 128 DH - group x Preshared – Lifetime – 24h Phase2: Sha Aes 128 Lifetime – 1h I am not sure which app I need to install on the linux box that will support this type of connection.   On a Debian-based system, including Ubuntu, how can one tell which repository a package will be downloaded from, without actually beginning the download? aptitude show and apt-cache info will show the section (e.g., metapackage, base, graphics), but not the repository to which a package belongs (e.g., http://ppa.launchpad.net/mactel-support/ppa/ubuntu or http://us.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/). When installing the package, the actual repository appears during the download (it is printed out in the "downloading from ..." output from apt and similar programs), but how can one obtain information on the repository containing the package (or a specific version of a package) without downloading and installing it first? Additionally, how can one determine the source repository for a package that is already installed?

EX. 300 users(0% error), 400 users(7% error in a sample, 5% error in another sample), 500 users(more than 10% error in 4 out of 6 samples). At What value of % Error, I can say system reached the Breaking point.I used concurrent users 300, 400, 500 in a PHP website. Should I consider any other parameter to determine breaking point. • Automated VLAN creation with residential Wireless devices

  We've got a few WRT devices from Linksys here, and the issue has arisen to deploy them in a relatively small environment, However, in the interest of manageability we'd like to be able to automatically VLAN (ideally NOT subnet) every user from one another. It seems obvious to me that the default firmware isn't capable of this - can OpenWRT/Tomato/DD-WRT support any sort of functionality such that new users are automatically VLANed or otherwise logically separated from other users? It seems like there's an easy IPtables or PF solution here, but I've been wrong before. (If that seemed a little ambiguous, heres an example) User 1 sends DHCP request to server, new VLAN (We'll call VLAN 1) is created, user is placed in that VLAN. Then, user 2 sends a DHCP request and is placed in VLAN 2 etc. etc.

• Any recommendations on a NAS for a home-super-user?

  Can anyone recommend a good NAS for use in a home-server environment? I would request at least 2, preferably 4 disks, and I am most interested in good to excellent throughput for file-server and backup purposes - don't need any of the fancy media-streaming or -sharing features, that's not of interest to me. For a 4 or more disk solution, support for the various RAID levels (0, 1, 1+0, 5) would be a plus - especially if supported in hardware (rather than just a software emulation). I just need a place to put my collection of data, ISO images, and so forth - and since several external disks (self-built and off-the-shelf) have failed so far, I'm looking into a more reliable solution. • Can anyone point me to some open source directX rendering engines or frameworks? [on hold]

  I'm completely new to graphics API programmming, but not at all new to the theory and principle operation of game engines and rendering engines. That being said, I want to do some experiments of rendering very dense geometry scenes in a basic rendering engine or game engine. I don't need a lot of bells and whistles. What I need is enough control that I can implement my own scene graph algorithms and control the rendering pipeline very specifically. My ideal candidate engine would be either a rendering engine or game engine with a modular design that might be ready to go out of the box but would be simple enough in case I need to rip out some of the guts in the rendering management and implement my own. It's a tough call because I'm right at the level where it's almost better to go from scratch, but there's no sense in having to build every single basic thing such as heirarchical transforms, etc. I just want to work with rendering optimization to push dense geometry for maximum FPS. Does anyone have a suggestion for an engine or basic framework to use? I requested DirectX in my title because I figured it would likely be better supported and less likely for me to run into some obscure less-documented problem. But OpenGL might be acceptable if the recommended framework was definitely better than my other options. EDIT: I should add that I really want GPU tessellation support (part of adding to the density of geometry detail).

• How to step down voltage from 208V to 110V

  I have some racks that will be fed by 208V/20A circuits. These circuits will be conditioned and battery-backed by the facility in which these racks will live. 99% of the devices in the rack will be able to support 208V input, so I plan to use these PDUs. However, there may be one or two odd devices that will need 110V input. I know that I can use a step-down transformer to provide 110V for these devices, but that seems like overkill for such a small number of devices, plus I don't want to pay extra for the UPS functionality since my power will already be battery-backed. Any suggestions for something I can use for these one-off 110V devices?

• Less daunting front end for SQL Server

  We currently have a few users who have been using Access very succesfully to throw around large amounts of data. We've now got to the point where the data is just too large to be held in Access, as well as wanting to hold it in a single place where multiple users can access it. We have therefore moved the data over to SQL Server. I want to provide a general tool that they can use to view the data on the server and do some simple things like run queries and filters and export the data for offline manipulation. I don't want the support headaches that might come with rolling out SQL Management Studio, and neither do I want to have to create an Access database with links for each current database or ones that are created in the future. Can anyone recommend a simple tool that will connect to a server, list all the databases and allow a user to drill into a table and look at the data. Many thanks.

• Conflicts with MS Office temporary files when using Offline Folders on Vista

  We are using Offline Folders feature of Windows Vista to make files on network shares available when out of office. Mostly it is working, but every time I do a sync I get a lot of such errors: D500E7B8.tmp - A file was deleted on this computer and changed on the server while this computer was offline. There are hundreds of them. I always select all of them and choose resolution "Delete from both locations". But what is causing this and how can I avoid it? I suspect the reason is that we are using Debian and Samba (3.4.7) on our file server. I've been looking for some Samba options that would cure this, but with no success. I learned that probably the cause is, that both Word and Excel are using specific pattern to change files - they never change the original file, but instead always write a new temporary file and rename it to original file, when you click Save. • After a week of smooth running, my Dell t310 servername reverted to the service tag and screwed everything up!

  Has this happened to anyone else? Began having a tremedous amount of problems with our brand new Dell SBS 2011 T310 server and after nearly 15 hours will Dell support, they determined that the server name hade reverted to DXXXXXXXX ("D: + the service tag). The Dell tech said that this was a major major problem. I'm the only person with any access to the machine and I didn't attempt to change the server name. The tech said it didn't look as if anyone had hacked the box but something had replaced "OurCompanyServer" with "DXX12XX" It would seem to me, simply changing the server name back to what I originally had would correct the problem, but the Dell tech said it wasn't that easy. Anyone encounter this?

• Graphics drivers could not find compatible graphics hardware

  I have a desktop with Asus P5KPS/EPU motherboard and Nvidia GF 9600 GT Graphic Adapter. I just set up new windows 7. My problem is that I cannot find a good dirver for my Graphic Adapter. I've downloaded driver from Nvidia.com which say support my GF 9600 GT, but when I installed it, it said This graphics drivers could not find compatible graphics hardware. I go into safe mode, uninstall Standard Graphics Adapter that auto installed then install my Nvidia driver, still not work. Anyone can show me how to solve this problem?

• Using TrueCrypt (software encryption) with an SSD

  I use full drive encryption (FDE) w/ TrueCrypt on my laptop. I have a 2nd gen I7 with AES instruction support, so honestly I can't even notice a speed change on the system with it on. My question, is for those who know about SSD's a lot. I previously (early 2011) read articles about how software encryption will negate the speed benefits that an SSD provides - because of the need for the SSD to send a delete command, then a write command, for every encrypted write - instead of just writing over data like a regular HDD would (or something like this...honestly I can't remember...ha!). Anyway, any improvements in this field? Is it pointless for me to grab an SSD if I'm using FDE? Thanks all.

• What networking hardware do I need in this situation (Fairpoint [ISP] "E-DIA" connection)?

  Right away you'd probably want to say, "Well just ask Fairpoint." I've done that, a number of times in as many different ways I can phrase it and just keep hitting a brick wall where they will not commit to giving any useful information and instead recommend contracting an outside firm and spending a pile of money. Anyway... I'm trying to help a family member out with an office connection that is being setup. I've managed to scrape tiny details here and there from our discussions with the ISP (Fairpoint in Maine) about what is going to be done and what is going to be needed. This is the connection that is being setup: http://www.fairpoint.com/enterprise/vantagepoint/e-dia/index.jsp Information I have been given: Via this connection I can get IPs across different C blocks if that were necessary (it is not) Fairpoint is bringing hardware with them that they claim simply does the conversion from whatever line is coming in the building to ethernet, they have referred to this as the "Fairpoint Netvanta" which I know suggests a line of products that I have looked up, but some (most? all?) of those seems to handle all the routing that I saw. Fairpoint says that I need to bring my own router to sit behind their device. They have literally declined to even suggest products that have worked for other clients in the past and fall back on "any business router works, not a home router." That alone makes my head spin. Detail and clarity hit a brick wall from there. At one moment I got them to cough up that the router I provide needs to be able to do VPN tunneling but they typically fall back to "not a home router" and I was even given "just a business router, Cisco or something, it'll be $500-$1000". Now I know that VPN tunneling routers exist well below that price point and since this connection is going to one machine, possibly two only via ethernet, my desire to purchase networking hardware that over-delivers what I need is not very high. They are literally setting all this up, have provided no configuration details for after they finish, and expect me to just plunk a $500+ router behind it and cross my fingers or contract out to a third party company. If there were other options available for the location, I would have dropped them in a second, but there aren't. The device that is connected requires a static IP and I'm honestly a bit hazy on the necessity of an additional router behind their device and generally a bit over my head. I presume that the router needs to be able to serve external static IPs to its clients, but I really don't know what is going to show up when they come to do the install. This was originally going to be run via an ADSL bridge modem with a range of static IPs (which is easy and is currently setup properly) but the location is too far from the telco to get speeds that we really want for upload and this is also a connection that needs high availability. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated (I see a number of options in the Cisco Small Business line and other competitors that aren't going to break the bank…), especially if you've worked with Fairpoint before! • What kind of issues would occur if resolve.conf had no dns servers set?

  I want to create a server for a customer and have that customer finish the configuration for themselves. It was been decided that rather than setting default DNS servers (i.e. something like Google's) that the customer should enter the information by themselves. I assume that the customer is technically competent enough to do this. If however they forget or neglect to set this up they might spend some time trying to figure out what is wrong and eventually contact support. (In this case, I think that setting a default might have been better.) Apart from the obvious inability to resolve hosts, what other issues might they face until they have set valid dns servers in resolve.conf?

• Ubuntu install can't find hard drives

  I recently got a Dell Inspiron Special Edition 7720 computer. I am trying to install Ubuntu along side Windows. When I use the WUBI installer, the installation of Ubuntu works as long as I do not boot into Windows; if I boot into Windows, when I go back into Ubuntu, I am given a variety of error messages which claim to have corrupt or missing kernel/root directory, etc. I have been working with this problem for about a week, and have reinstalled Ubuntu MANY times. So far, I have eliminated all of the following problems: Corrupt WUBI installation (Downloaded multiple times, used on other systems), I have tried using a CD and a flash drive, both of which work on other computers. I know that no program within Ubuntu is creating the problem. I know that others have successfully installed Ubuntu on a computer with my operating system (Windows 7 SP1). This is a much shortened version of the original question, which has been up for about 5 days, and included a more detailed description of the problem, but left everyone clueless as to the source of this problem. When I spoke with the Dell service technician who came over today to replace my keyboard, he suggested that the driver for my HDD was so new that it was not compatible with the current version of Ubuntu. His reasoning is as follows: 1) During an install from a flash drive or CD, where I am supposed to get the option to wipe my system or create a dual boot, I get a window that asks me to select a hard drive partition, but none are listed. 2) This model of computer was made public in June of this year, while Ubuntu was released in April Adopting this theory, it would seem to me that the WUBI install fails after booting into Windows because Ubuntu can no longer find the files that it needs to load. Does this theory seem at all plausible to anyone? I just want to install Ubuntu and have it stay on my computer. I don't care how I put it there, I just need it to work, so I would TRULY appreciate any advice or suggestions anyone could give. Thanks so much for your time and support!!!

• Converting Visio (.vsd) files to pdf automatically

  I am trying to create a scheduled task to convert all my .vsd files to pdf so all of our devices can read them (linux, mac, smartphones, etc..) and I would prefer not paying for something that can be done with Visio + PDFcreator. The approach of using openoffice doesn't work with .vsd files since it's not a supported format ( Method/tools for batch-converting Microsoft Word files into PDF?) What I've currently is this: 'C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Visio11\VISIO.EXE' /pt "Z:\Archive\Files.vsd",-PPDFCREATORPRINTER /nologo That is able to open automatically the document I want and to prepare it to be printed, the only missing part is that it requires me to confirm on the printing dialog.   As a junior technician I've had to deal with (or will have to deal with) some problems in the past and only being a junior technicain I don't have the confidence or respect from management staff to speak up. For instance, we're having a entirely new system. From Server 2003/XP going to Sevrer 2008 R2/Win7/VMWare/Digital Signage and the current amount of time dedicated to the training of the IT support department currently stands at 0. They seem to think that all it systems are the same and are going to get a bit of shock when I can't help them. I think there;s some UK legislation saying a school/business have to put money and time aside for training, but I'm not sure. What have you had to deal with?

• HP Pavilion dv3 volume control display driver on Windows 7

  I've recently bought an HP Pavilion dv3-2150ep and I'm having a hard time getting the volume control display to work as expected. The control is a back-lit touch-sensitive bar above the keyboard. Now the buttons to turn the volume up and down actually do it, but the lightning is not changing at all. The mute button does change color when toggled. I'm not sure if I'm missing any drivers here (I've installed all of those on the HP support page that seem to have something to do with sound and/or display) or if I have to activate this somewhere. Any ideas?

  I have Desktop with configuration Pentium 4,945 intel chipset board,dual booting with win 7 and ubuntu 10.10 (no graphics card) Recently i purchased Dell IN2020M 20" with native resolution of 1600x900 but my display allow maximum of 1024x768 because of this when i play any video in full screen mode it doesn't play smoothly or frames are refreshed jerkily I have tried updating my VGA driver but its doesn't helping me much. Is there any way to solve this problem ? 1if i want to replace monitor what maximum resolution should i buy ? 2if i want to upgrade(graphics card/motherboard) my desktop what is the minimum configuration to support the current system. • Cannot connect to internet with Clearwire modem

  I'm currently using a Motorola WiMAX modem (CPEi 25725) and cannot connect to the internet. I can connect to the modem at 192.168.15.1 and check its status. It says that it has good/excellent connectivity to the internet and shows all five signal bars. Additionally it has sent and received some WiMAX packets so I believe it is connected to a tower. I'm at a loss for what the problem is. Unplugging the modem, restarting it from software, and restarting my computer (Windows 7) have not helped. Windows still reports that it is not connected to the internet. Alternatively, could this be an ISP issue? I have heard that Clearwire is a not-so-reputable ISP that blocks VoIP, and I was using Skype recently. EDIT: I called Clear's tech support and apparently their network is having significant problems at the moment. Guess there's nothing an end-user can do about it.

• Marking Discussions as Answered

  As a contributor to a number of projects on CodePlex I really like the fact that the discussions feature exists but also I need ways to help me sort the discussions threads so I can make sure no-one is getting forgotten about. Seems like a lot of you agreed as the feature request Provide feature to allow Coordinators to mark Discussions threads as 'Answered' is our number 2 voted feature right now with 178 votes.  Today we rolled out the first iteration of “answer” support to discussions. In this first iteration we wanted to keep it simple and lightweight. The original poster of the thread along with project owners, developers or editors can mark any post to the thread as an answer. You can have any number of answers marked in a thread and it’s very quick to mark or unmark a post as an answer.  We deliberately keep the answers in the originally posted order so that you can see them in context with the discussion thread. When viewing discussions the default view is still to see everything, but you can easily filter by “Unanswered”.  You can even save that as a bookmark so as someone interested in the project can quickly jump to the unanswered discussion threads to go help out on. As I mention, we kept this first pass of the answering feature as simple and as lightweight as possible so that we can get some feedback on it. Head on over to the issue tracking this feature if you have any thoughts once you have used it for a bit or feel free to respond in the comments. I already have a couple of things I think we want to do such as a refresh of the look and feel of discussions in general along, make it easier to navigate to posts that are marked an answered and surface posts that you do that were marked as answered in your profile page - but if you have ideas then please let us know.

• Recursively copy only new or changed files

  I'm sure this must have been asked and answered before, but I just can't find it right now... I have a Visual Studio post-build action that currently does a recursive copy (using xcopy) of an output folder to a different folder. This takes longer than I like and I'd like to only copy newly created and newer (changed) files each time (which xcopy doesn't seem to support). I cannot depend on any not-installed-by-default tool since the solution is used by different developers on different machines. What would a superuser do?

• Bluetooth headset turns off when Skype call ends

  For about 6 months, I haven't been able to use Skype because when I end a Skype call, my Plantronics Callisto headset gets turned off. I'm paralyzed so I can't turn it on manually. I have a Sony VAIO computer running Windows 7. I have updated my Bluetooth dongle software, uninstalled and reinstalled Skype and uninstalled Skype and gone back to an earlier version; all to no avail. Neither Plantronics nor Skype technical support are interested in looking into this problem for me.
