• Abstract Data Type and Data Structure

  It's quite difficult for me to understand these terms. I searched on google and read a little on Wikipedia but I'm still not sure. I've determined so far that: Abstract Data Type is a definition of new type, describes its properties and operations. Data Structure is an implementation of ADT. Many ADT can be implemented as the same Data Structure. If I think right, array as ADT means a collection of elements and as Data Structure, how it's stored in a memory. Stack is ADT with push, pop operations, but can we say about stack data structure if I mean I used stack implemented as an array in my algorithm? And why heap isn't ADT? It can be implemented as tree or an array.

• Virtualising Windows 8 on OS X with VMware Fusion above the 8GB limit

  tl;dr - don't.VMware Fusion has an 8GB limit, so on my 16GB MacBook Pro (which is an old one with a 16GB memory upgrade), I wanted to use more than 8GB. You can fudge it my editing the .vmx file and changing the memsize value to whatever you want.However it turns out that if you do this the performance on the whole machine turns into a big. It beachballs all over the place, both in VMware and without. Constant hanging of VMware, fan running hot the whole time, etc.This is just an apocryphal view, but having spent a week and a half with it unusable and me thinking I was going to have to go back to Win7, turn it down back to using 8GB exactly seems to be working much more stably.

• Cannot connect to secure wireless with Netgear wna3100 USB

  I have installed Ubuntu 11.10. I used a wired connection to download and install all of the updates. When I tried to use a Netgear WNA3100 wireless USB network adapter, it failed. Much searching and trying things I was finally able to get it working by disabling security on my router. I have verified this by disabling security and I was able to connect. When I enabled security (WPA2 PSK), the connection failed. What is necessary to enable security (WPA2 PSK) and still use the Netgear USB interface?   There seems to be an overabundance of buzzwords for software development styles and methodologies: Agile development, extreme programming, test-driven development, etc... well, is there any sort of buzzword for "performance-aware" development? By "performance awareness", I don't necessarily mean low-latency or low-level programming, although the former would logically fall under the blanket term I'm looking for. I mean development in which resources are recognised to be finite and so there is a general emphasis on low computational complexity, good resource management, etc. If I was to be snarky, I would say "good programming", but that doesn't seem to get the message across so well...

  What can an individual or a company do if the web designer who has designed their website becomes completely uncooperative? In our case He refuses to meet with us for discussions. He refuses to give us training on the effective use and management of the website he has designed for us (and has been paid in full for) despite this training being part of the original contract. Last year he disappeared for a number of months ,refused to answer emails or phobe calls and was totally unavailable to help us He refuses to give us the details of the hosting of our website.   Spent the weekend helping out several non-profits doing what we like to do best...  Designing, developing and making people very happy with their new websites, systems, applications and features.  Form what I saw at this GiveCamp about 75 percent of the non-profits needed updated or new websites supporting CMS features and the ability for staff members to update the content on their websites.... Some cool apps were designed and developed..... A centralized system for distribution of daily schedules and task assistance to autistic clients was a show stopper with an awesome central management interface, IPhone and in the future windows phone support for tactile, auditory and visual cues. SharePoint was upgraded and forms were automated for a volunteer fire company that desperately needed some automation to help the fireman do their primary job. Many cool sites for non-profits that had ether an outdated or non existent web presence.

  I am currently writing a sports strategy management game (cricket) in PHP, with a MYSQL database, and I have come across one stumbling block - how do I update games where neither player is online? Cricket is a game played between two players, and when they (or one of them) is online then everything is fine; but what if neither player is online? This occurs when championship games are played, and these games need to happen at certain times for game reasons. At the moment I have a private web page that updates every 5 seconds, and each time it loads all games are updated; but then I have the problem that when my private web page stops (for example my computer crashes or my web browser plays up) the game stops updating! Any suggestions?

• Ipod scrobbling to last.fm?

  The Amarok 1.4 series scrobbled the songs I played via ipod (and also had great ipod song transfer functionality). I've not been able to scrobble songs played via my ipod then synced to a media player since my upgrade to 11.10 (and the subsequent total loss of Amarok 1.4). I see various media players (clementine, banshee) have requests in for this feature but I'd like to believe that something, somewhere has ipod scrobbling in Ubuntu! Was the 1.4 series of Amarok the only thing that had it? Good music management is one of the main reasons I've used Linux (besides stability, clean interfaces, ease of development, etc). The lack of ipod scrobbling to last.fm makes me a very sad panda.

  While the default styles for most websites are nice there may be times when you would love to tweak how things look. See how easy it can be to change how websites look with the Stylish Extension for Firefox. Note: Scripts from Userstyles.org can also be added to Greasemonkey if you have it installed. Getting Started After installing the extension you will be presented with a first run page. You may want to keep it open so that you can browse directly to the Userstyles.org website using the link in the upper left corner. In the lower right corner you will have a new Status Bar Icon. If you have used Greasemonkey before this icon works a little differently. It will be faded out due to no user style scripts being active at the moment. You can use either a left or right click to access the Context Menu. The user style script management section is also added into your Add-ons Management Window instead of being separate. When you reach the user style scripts homepage you can choose to either learn more about the extension & scripts or… Start hunting for lots of user style script goodness. There will be three convenient categories to get you jump-started if you wish. You could also conduct a search if you have something specific in mind. Here is some information directly from the website provided for your benefit. Notice the reference to using these scripts with Greasemonkey… This section shows you how the scripts have been categorized and can give you a better idea of how to search for something more specific. Finding & Installing Scripts For our example we decided to look at the Updated Styles Section”first. Based on the page number listing at the bottom there are a lot of scripts available to look through. Time to refine our search a little bit… Using the drop-down menu we selected site styles and entered Yahoo in the search blank. Needless to say 5 pages was a lot easier to look through than 828. We decided to install the Yahoo! Result Number Script. When you do find a script (or scripts) that you like simply click on the Install with Stylish Button. A small window will pop up giving you the opportunity to preview, proceed with the installation, edit the code, or cancel the process. Note: In our example the Preview Function did not work but it may be something particular to the script or our browser’s settings. If you decide to do some quick editing the window shown above will switch over to this one. To return to the previous window and install the user style script click on the Switch to Install Button. After installing the user style the green section in the script’s webpage will actually change to this message… Opening up the Add-ons Manager Window shows our new script ready to go. The script worked perfectly when we conducted a search at Yahoo…the Status Bar Icon also changed from faded out to full color (another indicator that everything is running nicely). Conclusion If you prefer a custom look for your favorite websites then you can have a lot of fun experimenting with different user style scripts.   I'm currently studying engineering in Telecommunications and Electronics and we have migrated from assembler to C in microprocessor programming. I have doubts that this is a good idea. What are some advantages and disadvantages of C compared to assembly? The advantages/disadvantages I see are: Advantages: I can tell that C syntax is a lot easier to learn than Assembler syntax. C is easier to use for making more complex programs. Learning C is somehow more productive than learning assembler cause there is more developing stuff around C than Assembler. Disadvantages: Assembler is a lower level programming language than C,so this makes it a good for programming directly to hardware. Is a lot more flexible alluding you to work with memory,interrupts,micro-registers,etc.

• Using raw vertex information for sprites rather than SpriteBatch in XNA

  I have been wondering whether using SpriteBatch is the best option. Obviously for prototyping or small games it works well. However, I've been wanting to apply techniques such as shaders and lighting to my game. I know you can use shaders to some extent with SpriteSortMode.Immediate, but I'm not sure if you lose power using that. The other major thing is that you cannot store your vertex data in the graphics memory with buffers. In summary, is there an advantage of using VertexTextureNormal (or whatever they're called) structs for vertex data for 2D sprites, or should I stick with SpriteBatch, provided I wish to use shaders?

  I'm making a SpaceWar!-esque game using XNA. I want to limit my ships to 5 active bullets at any time. I have a Bullet DrawableGameComponent and a Ship DrawableGameComponent. My Ship has an array of 5 Bullet. What is the best way to manage the Bullet textures? Specifically, when should I be calling LoadTexture? Right now, my solution is to populate the Bullet array in the Ship's constructor, with LoadTexture being called in the Bullet constructor. The Bullet objects will be disabled/not visible except when they are active. Does the texture really need to be loaded once for each individual instance of the bullet object? This seems like a very processor-intensive operation. Note: This is a small-scale project, so I'm OK with not implementing a huge texture-management framework since there won't be more than half a dozen or so in the entire game. I'd still like to hear about scalable solutions for future applications, though.

• Detect frameworks and/or CMS utilized on websites in Firefox

  I'm redesigning the website for my academic library and am examining other sites to determine to identify the technologies used. Things like: Web frameworks Javascript frameworks Server-side technology Content management system Now I've had some real success in Firefox using plugins like Wappalyzer, Firebug, and the DOM Inspector. But some sites just don't display any of the info. I'm looking for using these tools, especially it seems it an enterprise-level CMS is being used. Does anyone know of any other tools to detect this kind of data? Also with Firebug & the DOM Inspector, there is a lot of info. displayed and I wondered if there was a way to derive the presence of server-side technologies, CMS's, etc. within certain elements of a web page? Also, if this question is more relevant to another Stack Exchange site, please let me know and I'll post it there instead. Much thanks, Jason

• 410 Responses when your CMS host doesn't support them?

  Sending a 410 responses for a page that no longer exist should make Google stop crawling for that page. The site I am working on has been recently migrated, and very little of the content was migrated. I've already turned the existing content into 301 redirects (the content that is on both the old and the new site), but now I would like to flush the old content from Google's memory by placing 410 responses in it's path when it returns to crawl for them and finds a 404 response. However, I asked our CMS host about it, and they said that our CMS does not support 410 responses. Is there some other way to post a 410 response, like making a dead link 301 redirect to a page that a 410 response in the form of a meta tag?

• XAudio2 - Multiple instances of the same sound

  Right now, I'm adding a rudimentary sound engine to my game. So far, I am able to load in a WAV file and play it once, then free up the memory when I close the game. However, the game crashes with a nice ArgumentOutOfBoundsException when I try to play another sound instance. Specified argument was out of the range of valid values. Parameter name: readLength I'm following this tutorial pretty much exactly, but I still keep getting the aforementioned error.
