• Effective template system

  I'm building a content management system, and need advice on which theming structure should I adopt. A few options (This is not a complete list): Wordpress style: the controller decides what template to load based on the user request, like: home page / article archive / single article page etc. each of these templates are unrelated to other templates, and must exist within the theme the theme developer decides if (s)he want to use inner-templates (like "sidebar", "sidebar item"), and includes them manually where (s)he thinks are needed. Drupal style: the controller gives control to the theme developer only to inner-templates; if they don't exist it falls back internally to some default templates (I find this very restrictive) Funky style: the controller only loads a "index.php" template and provides the theme developer conditional tags, which he can use to include inner-templates if (s)he wants. Among these styles, or others what style of template system allows for fast development and a more concise design and implementation.

• Best practices for periodically saving game state to disk

  I'm working on an MMO. All of the player and environment data lives on a server and is kept in memory. There's a "world" object which keeps track of all of the maps, characters, etc. and their relations to each other. To avoid data loss in case of a crash, I've been periodically serializing the world to disk. The trouble is, this object can be quite large, so when the server starts writing, there's noticeable in-game slowdown for a few seconds, which I'd like to avoid. Any pointers on how to go about this in a more efficient way?

• Flash messages in ASP.NET MVC without sessions

  I'm developing a web application for Windows Azure using ASP.NET MVC 4. I would like to enforce one restriction in the architecture: do not use Session. To achieve availability on Azure, and since there is no sticky sessions, I would need to store the session data in some central service, probably either SQL Azure or the Caching Service. I would rather avoid sessions on the SQL database to avoid the increased latency, and the caching service on Azure is very expensive for the ammount of memory offered. On the other hand, I would like to have the ability to easily pass Flash-style messages among redirects. TempData is the recommended way to do this, but by default it uses the session object. So I would like to know: Is there an alternative way to use TempData that doesn't require sessions or shared data between servers? Cookies perhaps? Is there a better alternative I'm overlooking?

  I have a cube-based world like Minecraft and I'm wondering if there's a way to construct a cube with fewer than 24 vertices so I can reduce memory usage. It doesn't seem possible to me for 2 reasons: the normals wouldn't come out right and per-face textures wouldn't work. Is this the case or am I wrong? Maybe there's some fancy new DX11 tech that can help? Edit: Just to clarify, I have 2 requirements: I need surface normals for each cube face in order to do proper lighting and I need a way to address a different indexes in a texture array for each cube face

• Changes to File Store Provider in UCM PS3

  In the recent PS3 release of UCM (11.1.1.4.0) there are some significant changes to the File Store Provider (FSP) configuration. For new PS3 installs (not upgrades from PS2) the FSP default storage rule includes a dispersion rule that will change the web-layout and vault paths by adding dispersion directories to the paths to limit the number of files in the vault and web-layout directories. What that means is that if you install a new PS3 UCM instance and migrate content in from a previous version of UCM the web URL will change. That is a critical problem for web sites and just general document management.   On Ubuntu 10.10, the following SDL code cause Gnome-panel to cease updating its drawing, however it does still function (ie windows on the panel open where they should be, but you just have to know where they 'would be' on instinct/memory).   We have a website which we want to show adverts in - However, these are custom adverts uploaded by the webmaster, not the Google adverts, or any adverts the network chooses. Ideally, there would be both options. We were considering developing our own advert-management system, but looking at the big picture, it might be better to consider other alternatives. Website is currently developed in C# / ASP.Net (Web Forms) Are there any recommendations to some open-source delivery networks and/or external hosted advert delivery networks? Personally I've used Google's DFP, however sometimes it is not so easy to get a Google AdSense account approved, especially while developing a new website and it not yet being launched. • How to stop programs on starting from returning to log in screen?

  I'm not a computer nerd but have been able to fix Ubuntu/Linux problems in the pass two years with a Google search but this on has me stumped. I upgraded to 12.04 about thirty days ago and all was well except that every time I tried to load KeePassX it would go to the login screen. I installed KeePass2 and all seemed to work. Last week I tried to load Bibble5 (Raw photo editor) and it would try to load and then back to the login screen. After a few days I gave up and downloaded Corel After Shot Pro (Corel's now owns Bibble5) and it has the same problem. Could someone please head me into the steps I need to follow to find out what is the cause.   I have a sales call today in which the person that I am talking to is interested in what TFS would give them over Star Team, The first thing I believe that I can say is that TFS is cheaper! Especially if you are doing MSFT development already and your team members have MSDN subscriptions as the CALs for TFS are covered in the MSDN subscription. The other thing that I noticed about Star Team was all of the references to ‘readiness’ and ‘integration’. • Routing PHP memcached calls to Oracle Coherence

  A new post Getting Started with the Coherence Memcached Adaptor from David Felcey shows how PHP memcached calls can automatically be routed to store data in Oracle Coherence 12c. This is possible now Coherence 12.1.3 supports Memcached clients using the Binary Memcached protocol. David's post shows how the Coherence Memcached adaptor can be configured as a proxy service that runs in the Coherence cluster. There's nothing particular to configure in the PHP application, except to enable memcached.use_sasl = 1 So what is Coherence? • How can I create a solid business case for upgrading our programmers to 256 GB SSD and 16 GB of RAM?

  We have an environment based on Microsoft stack (VS2010, SQL Server, etc), and I firmly believe that we could improve productivity a little bit, having more RAM and a faster secondary SSD. What data do you advice to gather so I can solidify my request in such a way the advantages can be unbiasedly demonstrated? Currently we have only 6GB of RAM and slower HD drives, and at home I have a 128 GB SSD in my desktop and 16 GB of RAM (I also think is the max amount of memory supported by our workstations, if we could go bigger then better), so I can feel the difference and it's real. I also want to add that we are in an industry with plenty of money, so the issue actually is how to get a budget approval from management and spend it wisely to increase productivity.

I recently finished my first prototype of my "kind" of own pathfinder (that doesn't use A* instead a geometrical approach/pattern recognition, the pathfinder just needs the knowledge about the terrain that is in his view to make decisions, because I wanted an AI that could actually explore, if the terrain is already known, then it will walk the shortest way easily, because the pathfinder has a memory of nodes). Anyway my question is more general: How do I start optimizing algorithms/loops/for_each/etc. using Assembly, although general tips are welcome. I am specifically looking for good books, because it is really hard to find good books on this topic. There are some small articles out there like this one, but still isn't enough knowledge to optimize an algorithm/game... I hope there is a modern good book out there, that I just couldn't find...
