• generating maps

  This is a conglomeration question when answering please specify which part you are addressing. I am looking at creating a maze type game that utilizes elevation. I have a few features I would like to have, but am unsure as to some of the implementation. I have done work doing fileIO maze generation (using a key to read the file, and then generate the level based on that file), but I am unsure how to think about this with elevation in the mix. I think height maps might be a good approach, but don't know how to represent them effectively. for a height map which is more beneficial XML(containing h[u,v] data and key definition), CSV (item1 is key reference, item2 is elevation), or another approach that I have not thought of yet? When it comes to placing the elevation values themselves what kind of deltah values are appropriate to have it noticeable at about a 60degree angle while not really effecting gravity driven physics (assuming some effect while moving up/down hill)? I am thinking of maybe going to procedural generation at some point, but am wondering if it is practical to have a procedurally generated grid (wall squares possibly same dimensions as the open space squares), or if designing to a thin wall open spaces is better? this decision will effect the amount of work need on the graphics end for uniform vs. irregular walls. EDIT: game will be a elevation maze shooter. levels/maps will be mazes with elevation the player has to negotiate. elevations will have effects on "combat" vision, and movement

• Install Base Transaction Error Troubleshooting

  Oracle Installed Base is an item instance life cycle tracking application that facilitates enterprise-wide life cycle item management and tracking capability.In a typical process flow a sales order is created and shipped, this updates Inventory and creates a new item instance in Install Base (IB).  The Inventory update results in a record being placed in the SFM Event Queue.  If the record is successfully processed the IB tables are updated, if there is an error the record is placed in the csi_txn_errors table and the error needs to be resolved so that the IB instance can be created.It's extremely important to be proactive and monitor IB Transaction Errors regularly.  Errors cascade and can build up exponentially if not resolved. Due to this cascade effect, error records need to be considered as a whole and not individually; the root cause of any error needs to be resolved first and this may result in the subsequent errors resolving themselves. Install Base Transaction Error Diagnostic Program In the past the IBtxnerr.sql script was used to diagnose transaction errors, this is now replaced by an enhanced concurrent program version of the script. • Five years old Ubuntu system - dist-upgrades always went fine, however some tasks remain

  I have a PC with a current Ubuntu distribution installed. I've upgraded many times since 5.10. It always went well, however some tools or features were kind of left behind in a unsatisfactory state: grub to grub2 - is it an really necessary to switch the boot loader some time to grub2. Upgrading this scares me abit. I still have ext3 devices - is it worth upgrading to ext4? should I wait for btrfs? hibernation and suspend- it only worked in 5.10, since 6.04 it was messed up. Should I really care? Any chance to repair this myself? Simply by cleanup or hacking config files. It is a desktop PC after all. So energy saving functionality is not really needed. I am using vmware workstation 6.5 and the latest kernel that supports it is 2.6.32. This is my default kernel now, ignoring 2.6.35. Am I missing anything important in the new kernel now?

• Develop in trunk and then branch off, or in release branch and then merge back?

  Say that we've decided on following a "release-based" branching strategy, so we'll have a branch for each release, and we can add maintenance updates as sub-branches from those. Does it matter whether we: develop and stabilize a new release in the trunk and then "save" that state in a new release branch; or first create that release branch and only merge into the trunk when the branch is stable? I find the former to be easier to deal with (less merging necessary), especially when we don't develop on multiple upcoming releases at the same time. Under normal circumstances we would all be working on the trunk, and only work on released branches if there are bugs to fix. What is the trunk actually used for in the latter approach? It seems to be almost obsolete, because I could create a future release branch based on the most recent released branch rather than from the trunk. Details based on comment below: Our product consists of a base platform and a number of modules on top; each is developed and even distributed separately from each other. Most team members work on several of these areas, so there's partial overlap between people. We generally work only on 1 future release and not at all on existing releases. One or two might work on a bugfix for an existing release for short periods of time. Our work isn't compiled and it's a mix of Unix shell scripts, XML configuration files, SQL packages, and more -- so there's no way to have push-button builds that can be tested. That's done manually, which is a bit laborious. A release cycle is typically half a year or more for the base platform; often 1 month for the modules.

• Problem with APTonCD application

  I created a iso image using aptoncd & burned it to a dvd. now when i tried to restore, the program does not detect the dvd in the drive. It shows "Please insert a disc in the drive." and if we click "ok" it shows "E: Failed to mount the cdrom.". The dvd is in the drive itself. • No Obvious Answer - Query-Strings and Javascript

  Say I have this main page /my-site/all-my-bath-soaps which lists all my products. It has a search filter text box that uses javascript to filter the products they want to see on that page (the URL doesn't change as they filter). Now from many other parts of the site I want to navigate to this products-page and see specific products. E.g. <a href="/my-site/all-my-bath-soaps?filter='Nivea-Soap'"> will go to /all-my-bath-soaps and apply javascript filtering to see just that product and hide all dom nodes for the other products. The problem is if the user changes the text in the filter from 'Nivea-Soap' to 'Lynx' the javascript will work fine and show the new products but the URL stays at ?filter='Nivea-Soap'. Is there anything I can do about this? Of course, I don't want to reload the page with a new query string every time they change the search criteria. Somehow it'd be great to move the ?filter=... criteria into POST data instead - but how can I do this with a link I don't know...

  If you installed OIF 11g on OEL 6.2 64bit and passed all the interesting gotchas but got stumped by this error in the WLS admin logs, and Enterprise Manager refuses to start correctly after what appeared to be a full successful install and configuration:  ...  <User defined listener oracle.sysman.eml.app.ContextInitializer failed: java.lang.NoClassDefFoundError: HTTPClient/ProtocolNotSuppException. java.lang.NoClassDefFoundError: HTTPClient/ProtocolNotSuppException     at oracle.sysman.eml.app.ContextInitializer.contextInitialized(ContextInitializer.java:1035) ... • Being stupid to get better productivity?

  I've spent a lot of time reading different books about "good design", "design patterns", etc. I'm a big fan of the SOLID approach and every time I need to write a simple piece of code, I think about the future. So, if implementing a new feature or a bug fix requires just adding three lines of code like this: if(xxx) { doSomething(); } It doesn't mean I'll do it this way. If I feel like this piece of code is likely to become larger in the nearest future, I'll think of adding abstractions, moving this functionality somewhere else and so on. The goal I'm pursuing is keeping average complexity the same as it was before my changes. I believe, that from the code standpoint, it's quite a good idea - my code is never long enough, and it's quite easy to understand the meanings for different entities, like classes, methods, and relations between classes and objects. The problem is, it takes too much time, and I often feel like it would be better if I just implemented that feature "as is". It's just about "three lines of code" vs. "new interface + two classes to implement that interface". From a product standpoint (when we're talking about the result), the things I do are quite senseless. I know that if we're going to work on the next version, having good code is really great. But on the other side, the time you've spent to make your code "good" may have been spent for implementing a couple of useful features. I often feel very unsatisfied with my results - good code that only can do A is worse than bad code that can do A, B, C, and D. Are there any books, articles, blogs, or your ideas that may help with developing one's "being stupid" approach?

• Extreme Portability: OpenJDK 7 and GlassFish 3.1.1 on Power Mac G5!

  Occasionally you hear someone grumble about platform support for some portion or combination of the Java product "stack". As you're about to see, this really is not as much of a problem as you might think. Our friend John Yeary was able to pull off a pretty slick feat with his vintage Power Mac G5. In his words: Using a build script sent to me by Kurt Miller, build recommendations from Kelly O'Hair, and the great work of the BSD Port team... I created a new build of OpenJDK 7 for my PPC based system using the Zero VM. The results are fantastic. I can run GlassFish 3.1.1 along with all my enterprise applications. I recently had the opportunity to pick up an old G5 for little money and passed on it. What would I do with it? At the time, I didn't think it would be more than a space-consuming novelty. Turns out...I could have had some fun and a useful piece of hardware at the same time. Maybe it's time to go bargain-hunting again. • New SPC2 benchmark- The 7420 KILLS it !!!

  This is pretty sweet. The new SPC2 benchmark came out last week, and the 7420 not only came in 2nd of ALL speed scores, but came in #1 for price per MBPS. Check out this table. The 7420 score of 10,704 makes it really fast, but that's not the best part. The price one would have to pay in order to beat it is ridiculous. You can go see for yourself at http://www.storageperformance.org/results/benchmark_results_spc2The only system on the whole page that beats it was over twice the price per MBPS. Very sweet for Oracle. So let's see, the 7420 is the fastest per $. The 7420 is the cheapest per MBPS. The 7420 has incredible, built-in features, management services, analytics, and protocols. It's extremely stable and as a cluster has no single point of failure. It won the Storage Magazine award for best NAS system this year. So how long will it be before it's the number 1 NAS system in the market? What are the biggest hurdles still stopping the widespread adoption of the ZFSSA? From what I see, it's three things: 1. Administrator's comfort level with older legacy systems. 2. Politics 3. Past issues with Oracle Support.   I see all of these issues crop up regularly. Number 1 just takes time and education. Number 3 takes time with our new, better, and growing support team. many of them came from Oracle and there were growing pains when they went from a straight software-model to having to also support hardware. Number 2 is tricky, but it's the job of the sales teams to break through the internal politics and help their clients see the value in oracle hardware systems. Benchmarks like this will help.

• StreamInsight Now Available Through Microsoft Update

  We are pleased to announce that StreamInsight v1.1 is now available for automatic download and install via Microsoft Update globally. In order to enable agile deployment of StreamInsight solutions, you have asked of us a steady cadence of releases with incremental, but highly impactful features and product improvements. Following our StreamInsight 1.0 launch in Spring 2010, we offered StreamInsight 1.1 in Fall 2010 with implicit compatibility and an upgraded setup to support side by side installs. With this setup, your applications will automatically point to the latest runtime, but you still have the choice to point your application back to a 1.0 runtime if you choose to do so. As the next step, in order to enable timely delivery of our releases to you, we are pleased to announce the support for automatic download and install of StreamInsight 1.1 release via Microsoft Update starting this week. If you have a computer: that is subscribed to Microsoft Update (different from Windows Update) has StreamInsight 1.0 installed, and does not yet have StreamInsight 1.1 installed, Microsoft Update will automatically download and install the corresponding StreamInsight 1.1 update side by side with your existing StreamInsight 1.0 installation – across all supported 32-bit and 64-bit Windows operating systems, across 11 supported languages, and across StreamInsight client and server SKUs. This is also supported in WSUS environments, if all your updates are managed from a corporate server (please talk to the WSUS administrator in your enterprise). As an example, if you have SI Client 1.0 DEU and SI Server 1.0 ENU installed on the same computer, Microsoft Update will selectively download and side-by-side install just the SI Client 1.1 DEU and SI Server 1.1 ENU releases. Going forward, Microsoft Update will be our preferred mode of delivery – in addition to support for our download sites, and media based distribution where appropriate.   Egal ob Single Instanz oder für Real Applikation Cluster Datenbanken die Grid Infrastruktur findet man bei immer mehr Systemen im Einsatz. Das liegt sowohl an der vereinfachten Überwachungstätigkeiten für die Oracle Datenbank, Listener und ASM Instanz, als auch an einigen weiterführenden Features, wie der einfachen Service Verwaltung für Single Instanz, DataGuard und/oder RAC. Dabei kommen insbesondere den Cluster Ready Services (CRS), einem Bestandteil der Clusterware Komponente der Grid Infrastruktur, eine wichtige Bedeutung zu, da diese intern alle Ressourcen steuert. Ressourcen können hierbei natürlich nicht nur die Oracle Prozesse (Datenbank, Listener, Virtuelle IP Adressen etc.) sein, sondern auch eigene Applikationen, die unter die Überwachung der Grid Infrastruktur resp. Clusterware gestellt werden. Dies kann von simplen Neustartanforderungen im Single Server Betrieb bis zu klassischen Failover Szenarien in Clusterumgebungen reichen. Diesem Aspekt trägt auch die Tatsache Rechnung, dass es seit einiger Zeit generische Applikations-Agenten (Siebel, Tomcat, GoldenGate, Apache, ...) für die Clusterware gibt und eine abgespeckte GI Installation auf der Oracle eigenen Middleware Hardware (Exalogic) läuft, um die Prozesse zu überwachen. Diese Cluster Ready Services werden vom Befehl "crsctl" gesteuert. Deshalb lohnt es sich dieses Utility mal genauer anzuschauen, zumal es einige Feinheiten enthält, die nicht direkt aus der Dokumentation bzw. Hilfe des Tools ersichtlich sind.

How to put the right type of automated tests in to the right automated builds.Speaker: Eric LandesTwitter: @ericlandesBlog: http://ericlandes.com/ This was one of the first sessions I attended during CodeStock 2012. Eric’s talk focused mostly on unit testing, and that the lack of proper unit testing can be compared to stealing from an employer. His point was that if you’re not doing proper unit testing then all of the time wasted on fixing issues that could have been detected with unit tests is like stealing money from employer. He makes the assumption that that time spent on fixing these issues could have been better spent developing new features that drive the business. To a point I can agree with Eric’s argument regarding unit testing and stealing from a company’s perspective. I can see how he relates resources being shifted from new development to bug fixes as stealing based on the fact that the resources used to fix bugs are directly taken from other projects. He also states that Boring/Redundant and Build/Test tasks should be automated because it reduces the changes of errors and frees up developer to do what they do best, DEVELOP! When he refers to testing, he breaks testing down in to four distinct types. Unit Test Acceptance Test (This also includes Integration Tests) Performance Test UI Test With this he also recommends that developers should not go buck wild striving for 100% code coverage because some test my not provide a great return on investment. In his experience he recommends that 70% test coverage was a very acceptable rate.

• Checking for collisions on a 3D heightmap

  I have a 3D heightmap drawn using OpenGL (which isn't important). It's represented by a 2D array of height data. To draw this I go through the array using each point as a vertex. Three vertices are wound together to form a triangle, two triangles to make a quad. To stop the whole mesh being tiny I scale this by a certain amount called 'gridsize'. This produces a fairly nice and lumpy, angular terrain kind of similar to something you'd see in old Atari/Amiga or DOS '3D' games (think Virus/Zarch on the Atari ST). I'm now trying to work out how to do collision with the terrain, testing to see if the player is about to collide with a piece of scenery sticking upwards or fall into a hole. At the moment I am simply dividing the player's co-ordinates by the gridsize to find which vertex the player is on top of and it works well when the player is exactly over the corner of a triangle piece of terrain. However... How can I make it more accurate for the bits between the vertices? I get confused since they don't exist in my heightmap data, they're a product of the GPU trying to draw a triangle between three points. I can calculate the height of the point closest to the player, but not the space between them. I.e if the player is hovering over the centre of one of these 'quads', rather than over the corner vertex of one, how do I work out the height of the terrain below them? Later on I may want the player to slide down the slopes in the terrain.
