    I am using Ubuntu 12.04 x64 bit as default DE. I was guessing it is possible to Auto Arrange the Current-Active applications in Unity Launcher panel to align in Lastly-Opened or Firstly-Opened in ascending or descending order, irrespective of their locked positions in the Unity Launcher panel. Just to get rid of Scrolling down the launcher panel every time to search active application thereby depriving the need of Alt-Tab shortcut. I mean Alt-Tab alternative in more smarter way, though I also use Alt-Tab for the task Management purpose.

  • Burn more than one ISO to one dvd?

    I just turned 11 CDs with a total of 1gb of stuff into ISOs. Is it possible for me to just burn all the ISO videos into a DVD? Any alternative way for me to do it? Edit: I need to be playable on any DVD player. It's videos for my grandparents. Update: I read that DVD shrink should work (re-authoring software), but I didn't try it because when I imported the VIDEO_TS folders into the software, my video wasn't played widescreen, and I dont' know how to fix it.

  • Development environment for embedded system

    I need to develop software in C/C++ for an embedded system. I have Debian 6 running off of a USB hard drive. I would like to be able to generate a stripped-down kernel with modules, and install them either on a CF card or a USB 'thumb' drive. I succeeded in building a Linux 3.6 kernel and running it in Debian off of the USB hard drive, but I am having trouble figuring out how to install it on the thumb drive. I would like a build cycle that looks like this: 1) Build module or kernel with desired software 2) Install it on thumb drive 3) Boot and test I would like to use the same system for both development and testing, if that is feasible. I am looking for resources and tutorials that would help me understand how to do this.

  • When does implementing MVVM not make sense

    I am a big fan of various patterns and enjoy learning new ones all the time however I think with all the evangelism around popular patterns and anti-patterns sometimes this causes blind adoption. I think most things have individual pros and cons and it's important to educate what the cons are and when it doesn't make sense to make a particular choice. The pros are constantly advocated. "It depends" I think applies most times but the industry does a poor job at communicating what it depends ON. Also many patterns surfaced from inheriting values from previous patterns or have derivatives, which each one brings another set of pros and cons to the table. The sooner we are more aware of the trade off's of decisions we make in software architecture the sooner we make better decisions. This is my first challenge to the community. Even if you are a big fan of said pattern, I challenge you to discover the cons and when you shouldn't use it. Define when MVVM (Model-View-ViewModel) may not make sense in a particular piece of software and based on what reasons. MVVM has a set of pros and cons. Let's try to define them. GO! :)

You had to sysprep the VM, and clone the data disks. This was slow, prone to errors, and stopped you from being productive. No more! A new option, called Capture, allows you to easily select a VM, running or not. The capture will copy the OS disk and data disks and create a new image out of it automatically for you. This means you can now easily clone an entire VM without affecting productivity.  To capture a VM, simply browse to your Virtual Machines in the Microsoft Azure management website, select the VM you want to clone, and click on the Capture button at the bottom. A window will come up asking to name your image. It took less than 1 minute for me to build a clone of my server. And because it is stored as an image, I can easily create a new VM with it. So that’s what I did… And that took about 5 minutes total.  That’s amazing…  To create a new VM from your image, click on the NEW icon (bottom left), select Compute/Virtual Machine/From Gallery, and select My Images from the left menu when selecting an Image. You will find your newly created image. Because this is a clone, you will not be prompted for a new login; the user id/password is the same.     While I'm a professional programmer, I've never been formally trained in software engineering. As I'm frequently visiting here and SO, I've noticed a trend for writing unit tests whenever possible and, as my software gets more complex and sophisticated, I see automated testing as a good idea in aiding debugging. However, most of my work involves writing complex SQL and then processing the output in some way. How would you write a test to ensure your SQL was returning the correct data, for example? Then, say if the data wasn't under your control (e.g., that of a 3rd party system), how can you efficiently test your processing routines without having to hand write reams of dummy data? The best solution I can think of is making views of the data that, together, cover most cases. I can then join those views with my SQL to see if it's returning the correct records and manually process the views to see if my functions, etc. are doing what they're supposed to. Still, it seems excessive and flakey; particularly finding data to test against...

    there is a bunch of servers connected to shared storage in a private LAN (10.x.x.x). this privateLAN is managed by a windows server (DHCP, DNS and directory services) these hosts need to be from outside of the datacenter Eg. Remote desktop. can the NIC2 on each of the hosts be connected to the other public LAN (compromising speed or security? what are improtant considerations: additional hardware? like switches? routing&DNS software? currently available hardware : Dell Powerconnect 6224 switch .... planning this for storage network. software: windows 2003 server for DHCP, DNS, A/D ? would it be more flexible to use Linux distributions like IPCOP, Untangle etc? all that I am looking for is good isolation between private and other networks, avoid DHCP, DNS, AD clashes.

    Hello, I recently made a start on learning BDD (Behaviour Driven Development) after watching a Google tech talk presented by David Astels. He made a very interesting case for using BDD and some of the literature I've read seem to highlight that it's easier to sell BDD to management. Admittedly, I'm a little skeptical about BDD after watching the above video. So, I'm interested to understand if BDD is indeed nothing more than a change in vocabulary or if it offers other benefits.

  • Mass editing videos on Ubuntu?

    Hi, I'm trying to add a watermark and a credits image to all of my old videos. I downloaded them off YouTube so they are all flv (H.264?). Is there some software that will allow me do simple edits in batches? I know a little bit of Python and tried looking at some of the library but they all seem like overkill (and way above my head). So is there a solution besides getting some software and going through all my videos and doing it manually? They are all mostly the same length, but it would be nice to specify a relative position for my credits. e.g. show a static image for 10 seconds when the video is at 95%

  • Ubuntu 10.04 Cant Adjust brightness on my lenevo Thinkpad?

    I cant seem to be able to adjust the brightness on my think-pad laptop running Ubuntu 10.04. In the power management applet it shows that the power is set to 100%, but even if i try to lower it the actual screen brightness dosent change. Any ideas of how I can get around this? I tried changing the brightness from the terminal but its already set to Max brightness (however the actual screen brightness is no that bright at all). Thanks

  • Unable to install Kaspersky anti virus 2011 on XP

    I recently tried installing Kaspersky antivirus 2011 on my XP (service pack 2) . Everytime I try to install through setup file, it initiates and then I get a pop up message saying Windows XP not compatible ( Sorry could no get the complete error message ) there is also options which come up saying "continue anyway" but it wont allow to click as the system gets hung . I also tried to skip from incompatible software by following the instructions on Kaspersky's website by creating a short cut to setup file and modifying the target field in it but still I get the same message. It also asks me to reboot before I install but it is still the same . Does this mean that I wont be able to install this antivirus software on my machine ? I also wrote to the Kaspersky support but seems they will take ages to reply.

  • Focusing on Mobile @ Oracle OpenWorld

    Plenty of exciting trends in the industry today: Cloud, Big Data, Mobile, etc. The first two are amazing of course, but for me, it's mobile, mobile and... MOBILE.   Why? Think back to the mozilla browser (Marc Andreessen's mozilla, not today's mozilla.org), Netscape and the nascent beginnings of the World Wide Web. Amazing times. Companies were just starting to set up their home pages, basic HTML, hyperlinks, images, ooooh, aaaah.  Yahoo! was *the* search engine back then. :-\   Anywhoo, I would pose that mobile today, we are in a similar junction. Sure, there's millions of apps on Apple's App Store and Google Play, but within the enterprise, it's just getting started. I'm talking about going beyond the simple, tactical apps such as calendaring, contacts or directory service lookup. And while mobile first a common mantra, I'm referring to mobile plus which includes and looks upon the whole enterprise holistically and adds new parameters, such as your GPS location, perhaps even your vital signs. (Apple's health kit?)  Everything is going mobile. Everything connected. But with the enterprise - scalability, security, integration, app management, user management, etc. Amazing times ahead. Ok, got that off my mind. Oracle OpenWorld 2014 - Going Mobile!  If you're coming to the big dance, I've highlighted some key mobile sessions below. And if you see me around, and there's a bar within reach, high five me for a beer.   • How to get started setting up IP security cameras

    I have just finished renovating my house. As part of the job, I have cat6 cable run through the house, including two external plugs. All cables terminate in the same location. My rough plan is to plug two IP cameras to monitor the front and rear, run POE from a central router to the two external cameras, plug my PC into the same router and run magic software X. Any machine plugged into the router or wirelessly connection should then be able to get a live feed and alerts based on motion detection. That's the plan, but I'm not sure how possible it is. What hardware to get and what monitoring software to get. Has anyone does something similar? What were your experiences?
