  The setup: Ubuntu with local Vmware Workstation 10 (everything works locally) Connects(File- Connect to Server) Debian server with the same Vmware Workstation 10 (Windows XP Guest) Debian setup does not allow raw disk access nor shared folders (most options does not exist) No shared folder No physical disk option I use root user for this machine. Default install. I've tried to add shared folder from command line - it does not work. How to enable shared folders or raw disk access? I have created new Windows 8 64 bit template from scratch - I cannot use physical HDD either, and no SharedFolder option. I think this is something about security policy of remote server.

• How do I know if I need to backup locally stored emails?

  I am moving a friend's website and emails from the current server to a new one. I don't have much experience working with migrating emails and in the past when moving servers all the emails have disappeared from the users local inbox, eg. MS Outlook. To make my question more clear, How do I know if I have to backup the emails before moving server? as I know sometimes they are stored locally and sometimes they are not. And, how do I know if the emails will remain on the user's machine once I move the information from server to server?

• Why does Chrome show overlapping text?

  In Chrome, news articles at: http://www.theprovince.com with a leading photo and caption show the caption text overlapped with the body text. I have an image but as a new user here I'm not allowed to upload it. It happens at that site almost always, here's an example from today: http://www.theprovince.com/sports/Canucks+Blackhawks+collision+Titanic+proportions/5721421/story.html It rarely happens elsewhere. The same link works fine in Internet Explorer so I'm guessing it's a Chrome issue. It's been like this for many months, I read the site almost everyday. I click on "Print this Article" to get a proper look at it, but it's annoying, hope someone has the answer. Thanks in advance.

• My Computer will not turn on?

  I recently built a gaming pc. It was working fine before the following events: I installed a graphics card driver update then: in windows it said that the user experience index needed to be refreshed, so i started the test and somewhere in the middle of the test my pc just switched off. No shutting down just stopped. Now it won't turn back on. I have checked its plugged in and the switch on psu is down, i tried a different power cable and i checked all the connections. When i press the power button nothing happens, no fans no lights no post beep.   The congestion control algorithm(s) of TCP seem to distribute the available bandwidth fairly between individual TCP flows. Is there some way to enable (or more precisely, enforce) fair bandwidth sharing on a per-host instead of a per-flow basis on a router? There should not be an (easy) way for a user to gain a disproportional bandwidth share by using multiple concurrent TCP flows (the way some download managers and most P2P clients do). I'm currently running a DD-WRT router to share a residential DSL line, and currently it's possible to (inadvertently or maliciously) hog most of the bandwidth by using multiple concurrent connections, which affecty VoIP conversations badly. I've played with the QoS settings a bit, but I'm not sure how to enable fair bandwidth sharing on a per-IP basis (per-service is not an option, as most of the flows are HTTP).

  I have a Lenovo Y510p laptop and I'm a Linux user, use Windows only for gaming. The device had no OS when I bought it and I also installed an SSD besides the 1TB hard drive. I would like to "hack" the One-Key-Recovery button, because I have no interest in its default behaviour (I don't need Windows recovery), but if I could boot up a hidden, fail-safe Linux with it, that would be great. How could I achieve it? I tried to search what the button does, but I only found some installers for Windows that could magically create a partition for the recovery. I would like to override this behaviour completely to boot up something else.

  Hello, guys, good morning. 127.0.0.1 is the local IP, isnt it? Is there a IP that I can use in order to refer to the any user in the internet? The thing is: i want to block a specific file to be accessed by the internet using IIS6. but i doesnt show me a clear way to do this. But i can define some security rules, for example: give IP restrictions for some file. So, i can deny for everybody (using that IP i am asking about) and allow for the internal IP. any suggestions?

  Sometimes, my Linux PC unexpectedly closes my session (log out) while I am working, and puts me back the login window. If I have terminal 1 logged with root and 2 logged with another user (without X), these ones are not logged out. For example, for the last three hours, it has happened five times. Other times, it leads to a reboot. So I have investigated: the UPS, but the behaviour is unchanged without it). the temperatures, but everything is fine (cpu, disks, video card). I have started to investigate also: the memory (partially tested - I have to run a full testyt next night). EDIT: totally tested and passed.   I have a folder called my-project inside which I've done git init, git commit -a, etc. Now I want to push it to an empty folder at /mnt/foo/bar on a remote server. How can I do this? I did try, based on what I'd read: cd my-project git remote add origin ssh://user@host/mnt/foo/bar/my-project.git git push origin master which didn't seem right (I'd assume source would come before destination) and it failed: fatal: '/mnt/boxee/git/midwinter-physiotherapy.git' does not appear to be a git repository fatal: The remote end hung up unexpectedly I'd like this to work such that I don't have to access the remote host and manually init a git repository every time ... do I have to do that? Am I going down the right route at all? Thanks.

  I want to create program which will be in use for few computers connected in local network. Basically the program aim is to keep track of all tables in a bar ( lets say ), which are reserved. When some user book a table as reserved the program should broadcast the table number to all other Pc's and mark the table as reserved. • How to enable/disable authentication without password when executing commands as superuser?

  On a Fedora 19 system which I set up for somebody a while ago I noticed that no authentication is required when commands are executed as the superuser. So, for example, when running Yum Extender, configuring the firewall or running some command with sudo in the terminal, I am not asked to provide a password. (With graphical applications the authentication dialog pops up for a few milliseconds.) For better security I would like to disable this automatic (authentication-less) assumption of superuser privileges. I do not remember if or how I enabled this authentication without a password. I might have enabled it for convenience for the non-pro user of this machine, but did not do any "fancy" things (like editing config files) to do so. I did not edit the sudoer file. I just checked that. I might have checked a "Do not ask for password again" checkbox or something similar. Whatever I did, I would like to undo it and enforce authentication for superuser tasks again.

• Encrypt ONE system directory?

  I dont want to encrypt my whole hard drive. But one app i ENJOY using stores my password in a not so secure way in the AppData folder. I would like to encrypt the folder. One note is the folder is inside my user/name directory. Maybe that will help or hinder the solution. I am fine with encrypting all of AppData if necessary. However i prefer not to encrypt C:\Users\NAME\ since it is heavily used by many apps. C:\Users\NAME\AppData\Local\APPNAME

• Cannot access https sites through any browser on Win XP?

  This isnt a firewall issue, I can telnet to gmail with no problems, but all browsers (chrome, IE, firefox) return a This web page is not available. error when tring to access it through the browser. I can access the same pages, using the same browsers, on the same machine, but through a different user account with no problem. What the hell is going on? Help appreciated. Edit: This is definitely a windows setup issue - I have just created a new admin account and can access https with problems. This is seriously infuriating.

Been looking at mediafire, but I'm not sure what else is out there that would meet my needs. Ideally wanting something that has no files-per-day-per-user limits, can host individual files of at least 500MB each, and has very little hassle for the users who download from them. I'll pay for a 'premium' or whatever level account if necessary. Any good suggestions? Or will mediafire be my best bet for this?

  As an experienced user, I sometimes notice that things are not going well with my computer. For example, my backup drive recently started cycling up and down, so I guessed it was probably dying, and replaced it. I detected this with my ears. Windows did not seem to notice or care. There ought to be software that monitors overall system health by keeping track of things like this, so that unusual events or increasing error rates will not be shrugged off. Among other things: disk errors that are recovered, corrupt network packets (at above the baseline expected rate) and crashes of trusted programs are early warnings. Is there any software that tries to use this kind of monitoring to warn of impending trouble?

• XP Filesharing works with IP's but not computer names.

  I recently ran into a problem where I was setting up a 5 person LAN. I enabled filesharing on the main computer and wanted to allow the other 4 computers to have access. 2 computers were able to access \expample without any issues. 1 computer would only connect if I uses the ip address \x.x.x.x\data. The third computer was able to access \example but required the user to login every time they tried to access the share. Why is there such inconsistency in these connections? All 5 computers are Windows XP Professional.

  I have access to PC, and I am a standard user. Everything(incl. "show charecters" tickbox at wiriless menu) requires admin access. Now, that said machine is actually like a big tv with touch. Type-stuff is handled by virtual keyboard of windows. I can reach to c:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Wlansvc\Profiles\Interfaces and can see-open files there, which is I assume where passwords stored are. Now the problem is that these passwords is encypted. I'm ok with if there is a way with changing/resetting admin password as well. Considering this device has nothing but massive amounts of usb(yep, not even cd-dvd // rw) the only way is from inside or with usb without admin rights.

  I have a question. How can i run SSH trough a proxy or a SSH Tunneling Protocol? For example i have a computer(Ubuntu) with ip eg. 123.123.123.123 and i want to connect to my server trough a proxy eg. 111.111.111.111 so i can see in lastlog that the last authentication was made from 123.123.123.123 . I need this because i cannot access a certain server at work only with an specified range IP. What i tried so far was http://daniel.haxx.se/docs/sshproxy.html where i used ssh -D 1 [email protected] -p 443 where i had 127.0.0.1 forwarded to a SSH Tunneling Protocol http://www.nixtutor.com/linux/installing-and-configuring-an-ssh-server/ (i configurated listening on port 443 but no result, still no connection (denied) ...) This question may sound simple, but i can't figure it out, can you please help me? Thanks.

• Password format not liked by installer

  I'm installing Chargeback and I get to the database-related information page (step 5 on page 17 of the users guide). Using a Windows account (it is an administrator of the server and I am logged on as that user) Username: DOMAIN\ServiceVMware-CB Password: #$%UuuU2u (this isn't the password but it does start with #$% and is the same length and case) I click the Test Connected and it returns back OK. I click Next and then I am given a warning telling me that the account does not have the right permissions. Check that it has log on as a service etc etc etc. I quit the installer. I change the password in the domain to Uuuuuu3 I reboot the server I restart the server The installer has no problems with the newer password. I'm not fussed either way, I'm just trying to save someone else the pain and perhaps the allowed password format could be added to the documentation. BTW I am using Server 2008 SP2 x64 with SQL Express 2005 x64.

  I have most of my audio files on a system shared by most of the people in my family, and i'd like to be able to get them accessable to a headless linux box i control over smb. The share(s) in question are not on a share that requires authentication (and most examples assume so), and i'd like to have them automatically mounted, and accessable on boot. I'd like to only use command line tools - so anything that has x dependancies is out, and shares should be accessable to any user on the system via a mount point OS shouldn't matter, but the "fileserver" is a windows XP system, and i can access the shares without logging in, and the client is a ubuntu 10.04 lts system with a minimal CLI install.

• RDC stops working after a period of time.

  I have a workstation with RDC configured for the employee. When they leave at the end of their day they lock the pc (windows key + l). They go home connect to our VPN and log back in. Everything works fine. The following morning they will attempt to log in before they return to the office. The computer does not respond to the RDC request. I've found that it becomes completely inactive to any ICMP requests. Once the user reboots the computer everything works fine again. I'm going to turn off RDC, reboot, turn RDC back on and reboot again to see if it fixes the problem. Until then does anyone have any other ideas?

• Why do 2 excel (2003) files that are exactly the same have different file size?

  I have two excel files that are exactly the same (in terms of the content of the file) but differ by quite a margin on filesize. One file is 37.5Kb while the other is 56Kb. The only difference I can see is the filename's. I don't know why there is such a big difference. Is there some sort of history or something that is stored with the file that is not visible to the user? If so, how would you delete this? Thanks for your help.

  I have a Windows XP machine that runs two applications and both print on a thermal printer connected by a serial port. For one application, the "Generic / Text Only" printer must be present, for the other to work I need to remove it. I've found a few .vbs scripts, but they are for network printer. How do I make them work with my local printer? Is there a better solution? The user would have to run the script every time he needs to switch from an application to another.
