• How can my team avoid frequent errors after refactoring?

  to give you a little background: I work for a company with roughly twelve Ruby on Rails developers (+/- interns). Remote work is common. Our product is made out of two parts: a rather fat core, and thin up to big customer projects built upon it. Customer projects usually expand the core. Overwriting of key features does not happen. I might add that the core has some rather bad parts that are in urgent need of refactorings. There are specs, but mostly for the customer projects. The worst part of the core are untested (as it should be...). The developers are split into two teams, working with one or two PO for each sprint. Usually, one customer project is strictly associated with one of the teams and POs. Now our problem: Rather frequently, we break each others stuff. Some one from Team A expands or refactors the core feature Y, causing unexpected errors for one of Team B's customer projects. Mostly, the changes are not announced over the teams, so the bugs hit almost always unexpected. Team B, including the PO, thought about feature Y to be stable and did not test it before releasing, unaware of the changes. How to get rid of those problems? What kind of 'announcement technique' can you recommend me?

• AWS RDS Mysql with benstalk Hibernate app: Character encoding issue

  I'm running a webapp from amazon rds with tomcat 7 and spring, which uses hibernate as the persistence layer. The application and utf-8 encoding work properly on localhost, but for some reason when I deploy to amazon, the UTF-8 encoding breaks. I use mysql 5.5.27 on amazon rds and the table that we wish to update has collation set to utf8 - utf8_unicode_ci And in hibernate I have set: < prop key="hibernate.connection.charSet"UTF-8 UTF-8 characters get replaced by ??? and this is of course especially bad for passwords and usernames + email as it basically kills them. Anyone else encountered character encoding breaking when deploying to amazon?

  I read a quote recently by Rich Hein of CIO.com "Certifications are, like most things in life: The more you put into them, the more you will get out." This is what we tell candidates all the time. The real value in obtaining a certification is the time spent preparing for the exam. All the hours spent reading books, practicing in hands-on environments, asking questions and searching for answers is valuable. It's valuable preparation for the exam, but it's also valuable preparation for your future job role and for your career. If your goal is just to pass an exam, you've missed a very important part of the value of certification.We receive so many questions through different forms of social media on whether or not certification will help candidates get jobs or get better jobs. Surveys conducted by us and by independent entities all point to the job and salary benefits of certification. However, a key part of that equation is whether a candidate can actually perform successfully in a job role. If preparation time was used to practice and learn and master new skills rather than to memorize a brain dump, the candidate will probably perform successfully in their job role, and job opportunities and higher salary will likely follow. Candidates who do not show that initiative, will not likely reap the full benefits of certification.Keep this in mind as you approach your next certification exam. You are preparing for a career, not an exam. This may help you to be more appreciative of the long hours spent studying!

  ISSUE: Backlight brightness does not change. More Detail: Brightness will not change, using both 'System Settings-Screen', or FN keys (Brightness bar shows and moves, but screen brightness does not change). Notcied a post in this thread (http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1866283) about having multiple folders in Sys-Class-Backlight... I HAVE TWO FOLDERS TOO! 'intel_backlight' and 'acpi_video0' Using the function keys, alters the value in the acpi_video0's 'Brightness' file - But doesn't actually alter the brightness of the screen. If I add 'backlight=vendor' in Grub, my function keys then edit the value in the 'Intel_Backlight brightness file. - But again doesnt actually change the brightness of the screen. Computer: Fujitsu Siemans Pi2515, Intel Integrated Graphics, No hdd partition. Already Tried: -Editing grub to contain: acpi_osi=Linux acpi_backlight=vendor -http://ubuntuguide.net/change-screen-brightness-with-fn-key-in-ubuntu-11-0410-10 -sudo apt-get install acpi -$ sudo setpci -s 00:02.0 F4.B=20 -Brightness does not adjust in fallback mode either. -Reinstalling OS, Using Linux Mint (Same problem). -Upgrading and downgrading BIOS. • Do we ethically have the right to use the MAC Address for verification purposes?

  I am writing a program, or starting at the very beginning of it, and I am thinking of purchase verification systems as a final step. I will be catering to Macs, PCs, and possibly Linux if all is said and done. I will also be programming this for smartphones as well using C++ and Objective-C. (I am writing a blueprint before going head first into it) That being said, I am not asking for help on doing it yet, but what I’m looking for is a realistic measurement for what could be expected as a viable and ethical option for purchase verification systems. Apple through the Apple Store, and some other stores out there have their own "You bought it" check. I am looking to use a three prong verification system. Email/password 16 to 32 character serial number using alpha/numeric and symbols with Upper and lowercase variants. MAC Address. The first two are in my mind ok, but I have to ask on an ethical standpoint, is a MAC Address to lock the software to said hardware unethical, or is it smart? I understand if an Ethernet card changes if not part of the logic board, or if the logic board changes so does the MAC address, so if that changes it will have to be re-verified, but I have to ask with how everything is today... Is it ethical to actually use the MAC address as a validation key or no? Should I be forward with this kind of verification system or should I keep it hidden as a secret? Yes I know hackers and others will find ways of knowing what I am doing, but in reality this is why I am asking. I know no verification is foolproof, but making it so that its harder to break is something I've always been interested in, and learning how to program is bringing up these questions, because I don't want to assume one thing and find out it's not really accepted in the programming world as a "you shouldn't do that" maneuver... Thanks in advance... I know this is my first programming question, but I am just learning how to program, and I am just making sure I'm not breaking some ethical programmer credo I shouldn't...

• Please recommend the best tools to build a test plan management tool

  I have mostly worked on hardware testing in my professional career and would like to get onto the software development side. I thought working on a practically usable project will help motivate me and help acquire some skills. I have decided to build a test plan management tool for the QA team I work in (We use excel sheets!). The test plan management tool should be browser based and should support this: There would be many test plans, each test plan having test sets, test sets having test cases and test cases having instructions, attachments and Pass/fail status marking and bug info in case of failure. It should also have an export to excel option. I have a visual picture of the tool I am looking to build but I don't have enough experience to figure our where to start. My current programming skills are limited to C and shell programming and I want to pick up python. What tools (programming language, database and anything else?) would you recommend for me to get this done? Also what are the key concepts in the recommended programming language that I should focus on to build a browser based tool like this?

• Boot Camp: is it possible to restart directly to Windows from Mac OS X?

  With the Boot Camp tools installed on Windows, there's an option for rebooting directly to Mac OS ("Restart in Mac OS X" from Boot Camp system tray item). But is this possible in the opposite direction? In other words, instead of the procedure 1) "Restart", 2) wait for OS X to shut down, 3) hold Option key (?), and 4) select the Windows partition, can I tell my Mac to restart so that Windows is selected on the next boot? Something like "Restart in Windows" which would let me bypass steps 2-4. NB: I want to keep Mac OS X as the default OS; I'm just looking for a convenient shortcut when normally running OS X and occasionally wanting to boot to Windows.

• Recommendations for a cloud/hosted server environment that can run different Windows VMs?

  I currently have a colocated Win 2008 server that I use for hosting different windows VMs for testing: Win 2008, Win XP, Vista, Win7, Win 2000. I'd like to ditch the server and use something like Amazone AWS but the key thing is I need to be able to launch VMs for these different windows versions. AWS doesn't allow this currently. Can anyone recommend somewhere that I could use? The main reasons I want to get away from my own server are: administration: backup, windows updates, etc space: disk limitations mean I can't have all the VMs I want. I'd like to be able to pay for space incrementally. I'll typically only run 1-3 at a time but want lots of snapshots of different machines.

• What is the *right* way to use gnome-shell integrated chat?

  Please bear with me as I am still figuring out how to use gnome-shell. My question concerns how to use the integrated chat correctly. I have the following questions: 1) When people chat with me, it pops up as a notification on the hidden bar at the bottom of the screen, and then that chat stays there so I can access it later. How do I initiate a chat in this manner, without opening an empathy window? What I have been doing is Hitting super key Typing in the person's name, which brings up contacts Initiate the chat using empathy Immediately close the chat window When the person responds, it comes through as a notification. I then proceed to interact with the chat this way. 2) What is the keyboard shortcut for bringing up the notifications bar? Ideally, I would like to have the following experience Use some keyboard shortcut to bring up notifications Begin typing the name of the notification that I wish to investigate, and have the matching work in a fuzzy manner, much like Ido mode's buffer switching matching in Emacs When then right name is matched, I hit enter and then bring up the chat with that person as that popup notification. Are these behaviours supported? If not, I would be happy to work on implementing them. I am an experienced programmer, but not familiar with gnome-shell. If someone would point me in the right direction in terms of if this behaviour is supported, or where in the gnome-shell framework would I add to to get this behaviour, I would really appreciate it. • How do I make my play/pause keyboard button work correctly in iTunes 10 on Windows?

  First and foremost, I have mmKeys installed correctly. My iTunes works almost perfect while minimized to the tray. My problem is with the play/pause button on my Wireless Comfort Keyboard 5000. When iTunes does not have focus (like it's minimized, or if it isn't the application I'm active in, like right now while typing this) the play pause button toggles twice. So, I'll push the pause button - and the song that is playing will pause, but a split second later will start up again. If the song is paused, and I push play, the song will immediately pause again. In order to get the key to work correctly, I must give iTunes focus, and then push the button.   Yesterday I’ve release an updated version of QueryUnit, the version 0.0.0.8. QueryUnit now supports AreNotEqual, Greater, and Less assertions and is more capable of managing strings results. I must say that I cannot live anymore without a proper Unit Testing of a BI solution. Just yesterday happened that one of the unit tests at a customer site failed showing a subtle situation where the release of a new version of custom application would have corrupted the source of BI data with a very low chance that someone would have noticed it before several days. It may happen when you have more the 15 systems that handles the data needed by your BI solution. The key message of this situation is “Trust No One”: if your data hasn’t passed quality testing it’s not trustable. Period. • Network Monitoring Tool Recommendation

  Hello, My company is looking for a monitoring app/tool that would allow us to capture and graph statistics on network performance. As a starting point, we would like to ping remote host(s) and gateway(s) from several of our servers, grab an average of the ping times from each of our servers to the remote host(s), and then graph it (preferably in a central location). Also, we would like to be able to graph the results for time frames as short as a week to as long as 6 months. It is reasonable to expect that we would ask more of the selected monitoring app/tool as we come up with other key network performance indicators in the future. So an app with great flexibility and features would be ideal. Upon first glance, Cacti looks like it might be a fit. Any other recommendations? Thanks in advance for any input.

• Mutt: apply command to all tagged messages

  From the mutt manual: Once you have tagged the desired messages, you can use the tag-prefix operator, which is the ; (semicolon) key by default. When the tag-prefix operator is used, the next operation will be applied to all tagged messages if that operation can be used in that manner. But it seems that I can only execute commands that are already bound to a specific keyboard shortcut. For example I can use ;d to delete all selected messages. What if I want to apply an "unbound" command (such as purge-message)? I have also tried using something based on :exec tag-prefix or :push tag-prefix without success.

• pointers to member functions in an event dispatcher

  For the past few days I've been trying to come up with a robust event handling system for the game (using a component based entity system, C++, OpenGL) I've been toying with. class EventDispatcher { typedef void (*CallbackFunction)(Event* event); typedef std::unordered_map<TypeInfo, std::list<CallbackFunction>, hash_TypeInfo > TypeCallbacksMap; EventQueue* global_queue_; TypeCallbacksMap callbacks_; ... } global_queue_ is a pointer to a wrapper EventQueue of std::queue<Event*> where Event is a pure virtual class. For every type of event I want to handle, I create a new derived class of Event, e.g. SetPositionEvent. TypeInfo is a wrapper on type_info. When I initialize my data, I bind functions to events in an unordered_map using TypeInfo(typeid(Event)) as the key that corresponds to a std::list of function pointers. When an event is dispatched, I iterate over the list calling the functions on that event. Those functions then static_cast the event pointer to the actual event type, so the event dispatcher needs to know very little. The actual functions that are being bound are functions for my component managers. For instance, SetPositionEvent would be handled by void PositionManager::HandleSetPositionEvent(Event* event) { SetPositionEvent* s_p_event = static_cast<SetPositionEvent*>(event); ... } The problem I'm running into is that to store a pointer to this function, it has to be static (or so everything leads me to believe.) In a perfect world, I want to store pointers member functions of a component manager that is defined in a script or whatever. It looks like I can store the instance of the component manager as well, but the typedef for this function is no longer simple and I can't find an example of how to do it. Is there a way to store a pointer to a member function of a class (along with a class instance, or, I guess a pointer to a class instance)? Is there an easier way to address this problem?

• When trying to install Wine on 12.10, 'Sudo' command will not let me type in a password.

  As the title explains, I have been attempting to install Wine on my laptop which is running 12.10. When I access the command terminal and entered "sudo add-apt-repository ppa:ubuntu-wine/ppa" I was of course met by a password block, when I attempted to enter my password, it flat out wouldn't let me type anything, the only key that got a response from the terminal was "enter" which was met by "incorrect password". To bypass this issue I backed out and used the 'Gksudo' command, this new dialogue box seemed to give me access to sudo commands. I then entered "sudo apt-get update" and "sudo apt-get install wine1.5". Up until the installation everything went fine, but after entering the final command (still using gksudo) The terminal read "the following packages have unmet dependencies" and proceeded to list a bunch of "recommends" So my guess is that Wine hasn't been updated to run on 12.10... Is this true, and is there any other way to open .exe's? Also what was with that funky password misshap? I'm totally new to Ubuntu so I've just been using support pages and tutorials, sorry if I'm a bit naive in these matters...
