• Why are my file selection dialogs so big? How do I make them smaller?

  When I use an external monitor, my file selection dialog boxes seem to be huge -- wider than my larger screen. I assume it is a nautilus issue since it happens whether I'm trying to open a file to upload (in firefox) or attach (in thunderbird) or just open it in LibreOffice. See screenshot: The browser window fills my left-hand monitor, the "open" dialog is wider than one screen, and wider than the window that spawned it. It's huge. It didn't used to be huge. Is there some way to force dialog windows to be smaller by default? Whenever I try to open/attach/upload a file I have to re-size the finder dialog before I can see what I'm looking at. I don't understand why it is defaulting to such a huge window.

• How to see the full file name on the Lubuntu Desktop?

  If I have a file with several characters in it, only a certain number of initial characters is displayed on the Lubuntu desktop and Xfce desktops. For example, I have a file titled, "interesting-links-on-default-browsers". It shows as "interesting-links-on-def..." with both DEs. However, single-clicking on the file in Xfce shows the full title but the truncated title remains in Lubuntu. It's not a big deal, but if it's just a matter of setting something somewhere to get the full title visible on single-click, I'd be grateful for pointers.

Currently, I am running the next command to retrieve the source code: apt-get source [package-name] The downside is, this file is often much bigger than the binary package and does not reflect the installation tree. Right now, I am downloading the packages through http://packages.ubuntu.com/: Search for [package-name] Select the package Click on amd64/i386 for download Download the actual file This takes too long for me and as someone who really likes the shell, I would like to do something like the next (imaginary) command: apt-get get-deb-file [package-name] I could not find something like this in the apt-get manual page. The most close I found was the --download-only switch, but this puts the package in /var/cache/apt/archives (which requires root permissions) and not in the current directory.

• Upload image file: is compression on client side already possible?

  When offering photo file uploading, usually the user will have badly compressed and huge (10+ megapixels) JPEG files from their cameras or phones. On the server side, these files will get re-compressed to something like 800x600px and JPEG quality 7 or 8. Is it (already) possible to do that re-compression on the client side? So that I would only need to transmit some 100kB (800x600px) and not 3 MB or more. Something like: (1) With javascript's new FileSystem API ( http://slides.html5rocks.com/#filewriter ) it would be possible to read the photo file's data into client side JS. (2) Then it would be necessary to re-encode the JPEG data, which is possible, but I counld not find any library for that (yet). Anybody knows such a library? (3) Last step would be to POST the re-compressed JPEG data to the server side for storage and get a URL to the stored photo file back from the server for inclusion into the client's HTML. I am looking for some jQuery plugin, other JS library or example web page that does this.

• How to package a single text file into a .deb?

  I'm trying to a make a simple .deb package, which would basically edit a config of another package I listed as a dependency. I added the required manipulations to the postinstall file. The problem is I can't find a way to package an example config, which should be copied and edited from the postinstall script. At the moment I just have a folder with the sample config, of which I'm creating a tar.gz and orig.tar.gz, then dh_make in that folder, edit the generated files and run debuild. However if I open the resulting .deb file with an archive manager, I can see that the sample file was not included at all.

• Should a standard include header be specified in each file or as a compiler parameter?

  I've got a file such as this: #ifndef STDINCLUDE #define STDINCLUDE #include <memory> #include <stdexcept> #endif I want this file to be included in every header file, because I use stuff from those headers so much. Is it preferable to include this via compiler options (-I stdinclude.hpp), or should I physically include them in each header? (#include <stdinclude>). Note that I am attempting to be cross-platform-minded. I use cmake to serve atleast Unix and Windows.

• How can you put all images from a game to 1 file?

  I've just finished a basic RPG game written in C++ SFML, I've put a lot of effort into the game and I'd want to distribute it, however I've ran into a small issue. Problem is, I have well over 200 images and map files (they're .txt files which hold map codes) all in the same folder as the executable, when I look in the folder, it makes me want to cry a little bit seeing so many resources, I've never seen a game which shows you all the resources directly, instead I believe they pack the resources in a certain file. Well, that's what I'm trying to achieve: I'm hoping to pack all the images in 1 file (Maybe the .txt files as well) then being able to read from that file or easily add to it.

  I tried to use Cmake for the first time, I tried adding a library to my project (Specifically, PhysFS) but then I understood that the library had no .lib file or .a file at all, so I have to build those somehow. I have no clue where to even start around going this, what should I do? Someone suggested I'd go to the project folder and type "Cmake ..." then "Make ..." but I was clueless as to how I'd do that. How would I build the library headers and source files in a .lib file that I can link in C::B? I'm using Windows XP SP3

That returns the link to the paste online. For example: echo timtjtim | pastebinit gave me the link paste.ubuntu.com/8010000 Which I can share. How can I do this with a file - for example a log file. Surely I don't have to open - > copy all - > open paste.ubuntu.com -> paste it?

• Can't install Ubuntu 11.10 on a seperate disk partition. I have a log file. Please help!

  Before I installed Ubuntu, I resized my C: drive (which has my Windows 7 OS). Prior to resizing, I even defragged the said drive. I tried using Wubi to install it on the created partition, but I receive an error. I have the log file and I would post it but it's too long and the site won't let me. :(So anyway, I wasn't able to install it, so I uninstalled it. Upon uninstalling Wubi and Ubuntu, I tried installing it by having the CD to my CD ROM. The installation was a success, however, upon rebooting I can neither boot to Ubuntu OR Windows 7. I get stuck in an infinite bootloop. I hope you can help me out! :(

  Hello, a while back I wanted to install some plugins for Trac but it required python 2.5 I tried installing it (I don't remember how) and the only thing I managed was to have two versions of python (2.4 and 2.5). Trac still uses the old version but the console uses 2.5 (python -V = Python 2.5.2). Anyway, the problem is not python, the problem is yum (which uses python). I am trying to upgrade my PHP version from 5.1.x to 5.2.x.   I have a c-compiled CGI application that I need to execute from the DocumentRoot of my Apache server. The CGI file is called index.cgi and is located at /usr/lib/cgi-bin/index.cgi. I had originally solved this problem with mod_rewrite, however that worked on my test system the target (embedded) doesn't have that module available so I'm looking at another route (again).

  I have a robocopy script to back up our Kiln repositories that runs nightly, which looks something like this: robocopy "$liveRepoLocation" "$cloneRepoLocation" /MIR /MT /W:3 /R:100 /LOG:"$backupLogLocation\BackupKiln.txt" /NFL /NDL /NP In the output, there are a ton of lines that contain "Extra file"s, like this: *EXTRA File 153 E:\Kiln Backup\elasticsearch\data\elasticsearch-kiln\nodes\0\indices\kiln-2\0\index\_yxe.fdt *EXTRA File 12 E:\Kiln Backup\elasticsearch\data\elasticsearch-kiln\nodes\0\indices\kiln-2\0\index\_yxe.fdx *EXTRA File 128 E:\Kiln Backup\elasticsearch\data\elasticsearch-kiln\nodes\0\indices\kiln-2\0\index\_yxe.fnm *EXTRA File 363 E:\Kiln Backup\elasticsearch\data\elasticsearch-kiln\nodes\0\indices\kiln-2\0\index\_yxe.frq *EXTRA File 13 E:\Kiln Backup\elasticsearch\data\elasticsearch-kiln\nodes\0\indices\kiln-2\0\index\_yxe.nrm Additionally, there are then hundreds of lines at the bottom that contain nothing but "100%"s, like this: 100% 100% 100% 100% 100% 100% 100% In addition to making the log files enormous (there are a lot of folders/files in Kiln repos), it makes it annoying to scan through the logs now and then to see if everything was working ok. I went through some headache also when we were trying to figure out how to make it work with lighttpd. this is the line that helps make it work in lighttpd. url.rewrite-once = ( ".*\?(.*)$" => "/index.php?$1", "^/js/.*$" => "$0", "^.*\.(js|ico|gif|jpg|png|css|swf |jar|class)$" => "$0", "" => "/index.php" ) but I couldn't figure out how to make it works in NginX. The webserver run just fine when we use the phpinfo.php test file. However as soon as I point it to my apps, nothing comes up. Check the error.log file and there's no error. Very mind boggling. I spent over 1 week trying to figure it out with no luck.. Please help?
