• using asp.net membership provider in a dll

  I've used Membership Providers in web apps over the last several years. I now have a new "request" for an internal project at work. They would like a service (not a web service) to do a quick authenticate against. Basically, exposing the ValidateUser(UserName, Password) method... I am building this in a DLL that will sit with our internal web site. What is the best approach to make this work? The DLL will not reference the web app and the web app will reference the DLL. How do I make the DLL aware of the Membership Provider? TIA PS: If this has been answered elsewhere please direct me to that... EDIT: I found an article on using ASP.NET Membership with WinForms and/or WPF applications. Unfortunately, these depend on an app.config file. A DLL appears to not use the app.config once published. • Alternative to Canned Response in Gmail

  I have a mailbox that i share with a colleague. We want a good way to store templates for e-mails that we send often like answers to common questions and so on. We have tried to use Canned Response to store this templates but that GUI really sucks and is kind of unusable for other things then signatures and stuff. Is anyone aware of a good alternative to this? We need to be able to share this templates. So it must be stored "in the cloud". We want "as easy access" as possible directly in gmail. A firefox plugin would be fine since we both use Firefox. We use both Mac and PC so the solution must be cross-platform. Anyone have any ideas on how to solve this?

If not, I apologise in advance. If you come from the Validation in the Model camp - does Model mean OOP representation of data (i.e. Active Record/Data Mapper) as "Entity" (to borrow the DDD terminology) - in which case you would, I assume, want all Model classes to inherit common validation constraints. Or can these rules simply be part of a Service in the Model - i.e. a Validation service? For example, could you consider Zend_Form and it's validation classes part of the Model? The concept of a Domain Model does not appear to be limited to Entities, and so validation may not necessarily need to be confined to this Entities. It seems that you would require a lot of potentially superfluous handing of values and responses back and forth between forms and "Entities" - and in some instances you may not persist the data recieved from user input, or recieve it from user input at all.

• Web Project for F#

  I am building a project system for Visual Studio MVC web projects with controllers written in F#. It comes along pretty cool. I can build and run the apps, but I have a problem with FSharp Language Service. In the editor it shows the syntax colorization and diagnostic as it should. With one problem - it does not pick up project references. Even though during build it picks them up and successfully builds the project, on the screen it shows the objects/namespaces from the referenced assemblies/projects as unresolved. If somebody out here has some knowledge about integrating with F# Language service - please help me make it work In response to Tomas: The code for F# controllers is in the project file and as I already mentioned I can compile and run it. Originally we kept the F# code in a separate project and desire to get rid of this extra complexity is what prompted this project. It is not a ASP.MVC though it is Bistro MVC. Edit BistroMVC now solves this problem in the latest version of the Bistro Designer which is based on the F# project extender

• Read varbinary data in java

  I made a Java application which reads some files from SQL server. Those files are saved to a varbinary(MAX) field in SQL Server by a third party web service. My problem is that when I want to read those files with my Java application, those binary data show different content in the Java application. In fact, I read data byte by byte and I figured out that some bytes did not show the real values which were saved in the database. I found out what the problem is, but I couldn’t find a solution yet. I found out that in the web service every varbinary data is saved to database as byte data (in .Net each byte takes 0 to 255). But, when I want to read the binary data in Java, it takes different values and cause an exception with some values, because in Java a byte value takes -127 to 127. In my Java application I want to write those data to a file by OutputStream.write(byte[]) method. How can I solve this problem? I think that I have to find a way to convert c# byte[] to a Java byte[] (or binary data), but how can I do that?

  This question may sound weird to some of you but I have never really used cloud and above all I'm still beginner in the web development and would be really thankful if someone could answer few of my question though they may sound weird So I would like to deploy simple website to Amazon, however, I'm concerned about bandwidth as they charge 0.12GB and I'm not able to set budget limit. My problem is that I wouldn't like to pay for 1000GB of bandwidth if someone for some reason decides to download one file constantly So could some of you, who have experience with amazon, tell what happens if my app is able to handle (say 50 req/sec 30kb/page) does that mean that in the worst case I would have to pay req * sec * min * hours * days * page size 50 * 60 * 60 * 24 * 30 * 30kb = 3888GB

• How to find all initializations of instance variables in a Java package?

  I'm in the midst of converting a legacy app to Spring. As part of the transition, we're converting our service classes from an "instantiate new ones whenever you need one" style to a Springleton style, so I need a way to make sure they don't have any state. I'm comfortable on the *nix command-line, and I have access to IntelliJ (this strikes me as a good fit for Structural Search and Replace, if I could figure out how to use it), and I could track down an Eclipse install, if that would help. I just want to make absolutely sure I've found all the possible problems. UPDATE: Sorry for the confusion. I don't have a problem finding places where the old constructor was being called. What I'm looking for is a "bullet-proof" why to search all 100+ service classes for any sort of internal state. The most obvious one I could think of (and the only one I've really found so far) is cases where we use memoization in the classes, so they have instance variables that get initialized internally instead of via Spring. This means that when the same Springleton gets used for different requests, data can leak between them. Thanks.

• How to update to jersey 2.X on an app using jersey 1.1X?

  i recently faced a problem with the handling of exceptions using jersey. In this case it was that the exceptions thrown from Exception mapper are not re thrown to the underlaying container, i searched and found that this has been fixed in the 2.0 version. But i'm using jersey 1.10 and the 2.X dependencies are all different and its also maven based. Since this project is not using maven, how do i use the more recent version?In the 2.X versions there are no jackson json jars for example. So i'm having some doubts in how to upgrade. • Security considerations in providing VPN access to non-company issued computers [migrated]

  There have been a few people at my office that have requested the installation of DropBox on their computers to synchronize files so they can work on them at home. I have always been wary about cloud computing, mainly because we are a Canadian company and enjoy the privacy and being outside the reach of the Patriot Act. The policy before I started was that employees with company issued notebooks could be issued a VPN account, and everyone else had to have a remote desktop connection. The theory behind this logic (as I understand it) was that we had the potential to lock down the notebooks whereas the employees home computers were outside of our grasp. We had no ability to ensure they weren't running as administrator all the time / were running AV so they were a higher risk at being infected with malware and could compromise network security. With the increase in people wanting DropBox I'm curious as to whether or not this policy is too restrictive and overly paranoid. Is it generally safe to provide VPN access to an employee without knowing what their computing environment looks like?

• Tell bots apart from human visitors for stats?

  I am looking to roll my own simple web stats script. The only major obstacle on the road, as far as I can see, is telling human visitors apart from bots. I would like to have a solution for that which I don't need to maintain on a regular basis (i.e. I don't want to update text files with bot-related User-agents). Is there any open service that does that, like Akismet does for spam? Or is there a PHP project that is dedicated to recognizing spiders and bots and provides frequent updates? To clarify: I'm not looking to block bots. I do not need 100% watertight results. I just want to exclude as many as I can from my stats. In know that parsing the user-Agent is an option but maintaining the patterns to parse for is a lot of work. My question is whether there is any project or service that does that already.   I'm having a go with the razor functionality in service stack. I have a razor cshtml view working for one of my response DTO's. I need to access some values from the request DTO in the razor view that have been filled in from some fields from the REST route, so i can construct a url to put into the response html page and also label some form labels. Is there anyway of doing this? I don't want to duplicate the property from the request DTO into the response DTO just for this html view. • how can i make sure only a single record is inserted when multiple apache threads are trying to acce

  I have a web service (xmlrpc service to be exact) that handles among other things writing data into the database. Here's the scenario: I often receive requests to either update or insert a record. What I would do is this: If the record already exists, append to the record, If not, create a new record The issue is that there are certain times I would get a 'burst' of requests, which spawns several apache threads to handle the request. These 'bursts' would come within less than milliseconds of each other. I now have several threads performing #1 and #2. Often two threads would would 'pass' number #1 and actually create two duplicate records (except for the primary key). I'd like to use some locking mechanism to prevent other threads from accessing the table while the other thread finishes its work. I'm just afraid of using it because if something happens I don't want to leave the table locked. Is there a solid way of handling this? I'm open to using locks if I can do it properly. Thanks,

  This should be a snap for anyone who's done it before... I'm trying to set up a self-hosted WCF service using NetTcpBinding. I got a trial SSL certificate from Thawte and successfully installed that in my IIS store, and I think I've got it correctly set up in the service - at least it doesn't exception out on me! Now, I'm trying to connect the client (this is still all on my dev machine), and it's giving me an error, "Message = "The X.509 certificate CN=ssl.mydomain.com, OU=For Test Purposes Only. No assurances., OU=IT, O=My Company, L=My Town, S=None, C=IL chain building failed. The certificate that was used has a trust chain that cannot be verified. Replace the certificate or change the certificateValidationMode. A certificate chain processed, but terminated in a root certificate which is not trusted by the trust provider." Ooookeeeey... now what? • PHP - file uploads and ways to prevent viruses from being uploaded in zip/rar archives

  I am trying to provide a service on my website to allow users to upload files so others can download them. The issue is, since some of these files I will allow to upload will be .zip/.rar files, I am curious as to what ideas exist to help prevent the uploading of archives with Viruses/trojans etc. included. Some .zip files will include legitimate .exe files,though I am not sure what options I have. I thought about it and I don't have a method for verifying with a virus scanner on the server, since I am on shared hosting w/o the option to run a service like that... nor do I have the knowledge on how to do that. I am also aware there is no php class or database to scan the files for viruses. This means, my only options are to rely on: a). manual approval <-- not an acceptable option for me as it might become a busy site with thousands of uploads b). get the users to somehow point out it if has viruses through voting or "flagging", etc.... anyway, regarding "b" - what ideas would you suggest?

  I am receiving this exception in LogCat every time I press the Back button in my app: Activity has leaked ServiceConnection com.android.vending.licensing.LicenseChecker@471cc039 that was originally bound here The code responsible for this leak in onCreate() is: mLicenseCheckerCallback = new MyLicenseCheckerCallback(); mChecker.checkAccess(mLicenseCheckerCallback); How do I get rid of this leak? I tried not assigning MyLicenseCheckerCallback to a member, thinking perhaps when the activity goes onPause() the reference to the callback is responsible for the leak: mChecker.checkAccess(new MyLicenseCheckerCallback()); But that didn't get rid of the leak.   I am trying to use Castle Windsor with MS Test. The test class only seems to use the default constructor. How do I configure Castle to resolve the service in the constructor? • What is the best Linux distro for a php web server? [on hold]

  We are planning to upgrade our hardware and at the same time we plan to reinstall all our web server from a fresh OS. Currently our web server is running on CentOS 4.7 on a dedicated server. We are using Apache, Mysql, PHP, SVN, FTP and all the needed tools for a web server managed through SSH. We plan to use a cloud server for the new web server. I don't know which Linux distro to take for this new server. Should I stay with Centos and just take the latest release 5.4 or should I switch to something else like a Debian base distro (Ubuntu Server)? The thing that I didn't like with CentOS was the none availability of the latest version of PHP and Apache on Yum. This make it harder to keep our webserver updated with the latest technologies...   I have set up a single sign on(SSO) for my services. All the services confirm the identity of the user using the IDPorvider(IDP). In my case I am also the IDP. In my saml request, I have included the following: 1. the level for which auth. is required. 2. the consumer url 3. the destination service url. 4. Issuer Then, encrypting this message with the SP's(service provider) private key and then with the IDP's Public key. Then I am sending this request. The IDP on receiving the request, first decrypts with his own private key and then with SP's public key. In the saml response: 1. destination url 2. Issuer 3. Status of the response Is this good enough? Please give your suggestions?

• TFS 2012 or TFS Azure (Preview)

  We want to migrate our current TFS 2010 solution that's hosted today in one of our own servers to TFS 2012 hosted somewhere else. We don't want to handle the servers any more, and therefor are looking at alternatives. TFS preview / Azure is one alternative, hosted in the cloud, but I'm not that happy with forcing users to use live id, and we don't have an AD. My second thought was to create a Azure virtual mashine, and there install and host TFS 2012. Is there any downsides with this? Compared to the price of bying a VPS this is cheap and feels reliable in Azure? Do you have any other ideas?

  These are the user identities my website tells me that it uses: Logged on: NT AUTHORITY\NETWORK SERVICE (Can not write any files at all) and Not logged on: WSW32\IUSR_77 (Can write files to any folder) I have a ASP.NET 4.0 website on a shared hosting IIS7 web server running in Integrated mode with 32-bit applications support enabled and MSSQL 2008. Using classic mode is not an option since I need to secure some static files and I use Routing. In my web.config file I have set the following: <system.webServer> <modules runAllManagedModulesForAllRequests="true" /> </system.webServer> My hosting company says that Impersonation is enabled by default on machine level, so this is not something I can change. I asked their support and they referred me to this article: http://www.codinghub.net/2010/08/differences-between-integrated-mode-and.html Citing this part: Different windows identity in Forms authentication When Forms Authentication is used by an application and anonymous access is allowed, the Integrated mode identity differs from the Classic mode identity in the following ways: * ServerVariables["LOGON_USER"] is filled. * Request.LogognUserIdentity uses the credentials of the [NT AUTHORITY\NETWORK SERVICE] account instead of the [NT AUTHORITY\INTERNET USER] account. This behavior occurs because authentication is performed in a single stage in Integrated mode. Conversely, in Classic mode, authentication occurs first with IIS 7.0 using anonymous access, and then with ASP.NET using Forms authentication. Thus, the result of the authentication is always a single user-- the Forms authentication user. AUTH_USER/LOGON_USER returns this same user because the Forms authentication user credentials are synchronized between IIS 7.0 and ASP.NET. A side effect is that LOGON_USER, HttpRequest.LogonUserIdentity, and impersonation no longer can access the Anonymous user credentials that IIS 7.0 would have authenticated by using Classic mode. How do I set up my website so that it can use the proper identity with the proper permissions? I've looked high and low for any answers regarding this specific problem, but found nil so far...
