  • Linux only recognizes 800Mhz from 2Ghz

    I tried with Suse 11 (KDE), Xubuntu 11.10 and Lubuntu 11.10 and these systems only recognizes 800Mhz from my processor of 2Ghz! The utilities I used are: linuxinfo, sysinfo, "system profiler and benchmark". And all of this only shows 800Mhz My system specs are: AMD Turion 64 Mobile MK36 512 RAM nVidia Geforce Go 6150 (I also tried with nVidia restricted drivers) 120GB Hard drive The weirdest thing is that Windows XP and 7 recognize the 2Ghz of my processor, What can I do? p.s. (It is not just the value of 800Mhz, I also feel my system very slow with linux)

    I'm unable to install bleachbit on my laptop running Ubuntu 12.04. The Ubuntu Software Centre shows that the package is available from the Universe software source and I have the option to "use this source" but after that, it gets stuck while quering software sources. How can I fix this problem? It's occurred to me that perhaps this could be from software sources being deleted in my configuration. If so, can someone tell me the default list of software sources? plz help me out and sorry for my poor english

  • Why is group write permission ignored in Ubuntu?

    I want my user to have full access to the local Apache root folder, and I also want the Apache user to have full access to the same folder. What I did was create a new group called DevGroup and I added my user and www-data there. Also I changed the permissions to 770 to allow full group access. But now it won't allow me or the Apache user any kind of access to the folder.     I have an apache site protected by HTTP basic authentication. The authentication is working fine. Now I would like to bypass authentication for users that are coming from a particular website by relying on the HTTP Referer header. Here is the configuration: SetEnvIf Referer "^http://.*.example\.org" coming_from_example_org <Directory /var/www/> Options Indexes FollowSymLinks MultiViews AllowOverride None Deny from all Allow from env=coming_from_example_org AuthName "login required" AuthUserFile /opt/http_basic_usernames_and_passwords AuthType Basic Require valid-user Satisfy Any </Directory> This is working fine for HTTP, but failing for HTTPS. My understanding is that in order to inspect the HTTP headers, the SSL handshake must be completed, but apache wants to inspect the <Directory> directives before doing the SSL handshake, even if I place them at the bottom of the configuration file. Q: How could I workaround this issue? PS: I'm not obsessed with the HTTP referer header, I could use other options that would allow users from a known website to bypass authantication.

  • Which Large File System Format to use for USB Flash drive compatible with Ubuntu/Mac/Windows?

    I've had this problem for a long time and can't find a solution. I switch between the 3 OSes all the time and use a 1TB USB Drive to do so. I can't seem to find a format that is compatible across all systems that handles large files (at least 8-9 GB). Does anyone have a solution for this? Recently I've tried exFat but that messes up the filesystem when trying to read on windows after adding files from Ubuntu (using the fuse driver). The OSes currently I'm using are Windows Vista/7, Mac OS X (10.6.5) and Ubuntu 10.10

I can send the TERM signal to the process manually, and it quits gracefully. But running stop queryqueue claims queryqueue stop/waiting but the process is still alive and well. Also, it's logs indicate it never received the kill signal. I'm guessing this is because upstart doesn't know which pid it has. I've also tried expect daemon and leaving the expect clause out entirely, but there's no change in behaviour. How can I get upstart to determine the pid of the exec'd process

  • A simple way to redirect http://mysite.com to http://mysite.com/mylink with Apache?

    Just starting to try to get the hang of how all the directives and options work under Apache. I'd like to do a redirect with my one site (only running one site on the server) so that when a request comes in to http://mysite.com the server automatically redirects them to a sub-url of http://mysite.com/mylink. I have tried putting redirects into the file located in /etc/apache2/sites-enabled to rewrite this, but then the top level domain URL complains it isn't redirecting properly. I think what I want is a browser redirect, and thought using RewriteEngine On RewriteRule ^/$ /mylink [L,R] would work, but putting it into an .htaccess file didn't work (it redirected but immediately gave a 500 internal server error.) Putting it into the file in /etc/apache2/sites-enabled gives a configuration error when trying to restart Apache. I know it's something simple...but what am I missing?

  • squid transparent proxy on all ports

    I have setup squid as a transparent proxy by redirecting port 80 to the native squid port 3128. I know there are issues with getting secure ports like ssl and imaps to go though the proxy but can I redirect all other ports through the proxy as well. I am trying to get a better idea of bandwidth usage. I have setup iptables to log usage and i am getting most traffic going into the related/established rule. I am trying to determine the origins of this traffic by sending traffic to squid for more detailed logging.

  • How to determine the source of a request in a distributed service system?

    Map/Reduce is a great concept for sorting large quantities of data at once. What to do if you have small parts of data and you need to reduce it all the time? Simple example - choosing a service for request. Imagine we have 10 services. Each provides services host with sets of request headers and post/get arguments. Each service declares it has 30 unique keys - 10 per set. service A: name id ... Now imagine we have a distributed services host. We have 200 machines with 10 services on each. Each service has 30 unique keys in there sets. but now to find to which service to map the incoming request we make our services post unique values that map to that sets. We can have up to or more than 10 000 such values sets on each machine per each service. service A machine 1 name = Sam id = 13245 ... service A machine 1 name = Ben id = 33232 ... ... service A machine 100 name = Ron id = 777888 ... So we get 200 * 10 * 30 * 30 * 10 000 == 18 000 000 000 and we get 500 requests per second on our gateway each containing 45 items 15 of which are just noise. And our task is to find a service for request (at least a machine it is running on). On all machines all over cluster for same services we have same rules. We can first select to which service came our request via rules filter 10 * 30. and we will have 200 * 30 * 10 000 == 60 000 000. So... 60 mil is definitely a problem... I hope to get on idea of mapping 30 * 10 000 onto some artificial neural network alike Perceptron that outputs 1 if 30 words (some hashes from words) from the request are correct or if less than Perceptron should return 0. And I’ll send each such Perceptron for each service from each machine to gateway. So I would have a map Perceptron <-> machine for each service. Can any one tall me if my Perceptron idea is at least “sane”? Or normal people do it some other way? Or if there are better ANNs for such purposes?

    My small 5 computer office currently runs on Ubuntu. 2 of the desktops run Windows7 in Sun Virtualbox software, and are used for Quickbooks. I am going off to college, and I am looking for a paid tech support solution to replace my IT position. I have an approx $300/mth budget, and I am wiling to discuss higher rates. Everyone in the office is currently comfortable with regular desktop usage, but I am handling all of the software installation and updates. I was hoping to get a total support package for all of their tech related questions, but I cannot find any services which will support linux. Is the Ubuntu Advantage Service something which can take my place? They would mostly need network help, printer help, and an occasional software compatibly troubleshooting session. If this is not a solution, does anyone know of a tech support forum/hotline which would cover all of this? Thank you for reading.

    Sorry this question is trivial, but I couldn't get it to work: I have a folder full of .zip files, each .zip file contains exactly one .xml file. The zip files have sensible names like a.zip etc., while the .xml file contained in them have some "randomname".xml Now I want to unpack all the .zip files in the folder, preserving the name of the .zip files, so that a.zip gets unpacked into a.xml, b.zip into b.xml etc... I only managed to achieve a batch unpacking with the command: for z in *.zip; do unzip "$z"; done How do I enhance this to keep the names?

  • Asus K50I sound issues

    I have an Asus K50IJ (Bestbuy) laptop and have issues with my sound. Speakers themselves work fine but when I plug into the headphone jack it auto mutes the front channel and no sounds comes out of either the speakers or the headphones. If I then unmute the channel I get sound from both the speakers and the headphones. alsamixer shows the Headphone channel as all grayed out. /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf I have tried snd-hda-intel model="asus-laptop" and snd-hda-intel model="asus" In Sound Preferences I have gone to output and changed the Connector to 'Analog Headphones' that results in no sound from either speakers or headphones.   • Fast (non-blocking) way to transfer many files to another server

    I am currently attempting to transfer over 1 million files from one server to another. Using wget, it seems to be extremely slow, probably because it starts a new transfer after the previous one has been completed. Question: Is there a faster non-blocking (asynchronous) way to do the transfer? I do not have enough space on the first server to compress the files into tar.gz and transferring them over. Thanks!

  • How can I allow individual developers to have their own space to create git repositories?

    I have a server that is essentially a gitosis setup. I have a git user that has access to all the shared repositories. What I would like to do is have each developer be able to have their own "area" on this server to create their own repositories. I'd like these areas to be able to be viewable via gitweb. How can this be done that would require the least maintenance in terms of adding users and repositories? One obvious solution would be to just allow each developer to create repositories on the git login and have branches named something like <devname>-<reponame>. But I could see this getting unmanageable as the number of developers grows.
