• SSL connection errors from Apache

  I'm running a (self-signed) SSL cert site on Apache/2.2.14 on Ubuntu 10.04, but various browsers are giving errors on half the connection attempts. Just now saw this transient error from Chrome: "Error 126 (net::ERR_SSL_BAD_RECORD_MAC_ALERT): Unknown error." After all participants had the opportunity to get free pizza and soft drinks, Quent Herschelman gave an excellent presentation about Architecture Tools in Visual Studio 2010. He started with a brief introduction to the new MSDN subscriptions, the different versions of Visual Studio, and the full circle of application and solution integration for the new Team Foundation Server. I like the new structure of the MSDN subscriptions and the new options the Team Foundation Server offers! Quent continued his presentation with excellent information and demos of the Architecture Tools, focusing on Architecture Explorer and UML. INTERTECH donated a trainings certificate for $2495 for the first price and a Barnes & Noble Gift card in the amount of $50 for the second price to our monthly raffle! • NHibernate 2 Beginner's Guide Review

  OK, here's the review I promised a while ago. This is a beginner's introduction to NHibernate, so if you have already some experience with NHibernate, you will notice it lacks a lot of concepts and information. It starts with a good description of NHibernate and why would we use it. It goes on describing basic mapping scenarios having primary keys generated with the HiLo or Identity algorithms, without actually explaining why would we choose one over the other. As for mapping, the book talks about XML mappings and provides a simple example of Fluent NHibernate, comparing it to its XML counterpart. When it comes to relations, it covers one-to-many/many-to-one and many-to-many, not one-to-one relations, but only talks briefly about lazy loading, which is, IMO, an important concept. Only Bags are described, not any of the other collection types. The log4net configuration description gets it's own chapter, which I find excessive. The chapter on configuration merely lists the most common properties for configuring NHibernate, both in XML and in code. Querying only talks about loading by ID (using Get, not Load) and using Criteria API, on which a paging example is presented as well as some common filtering options (property equals/like/between to, no examples on conjunction/disjunction, however). There's a chapter fully dedicated to ASP.NET, which explains how we can use NHibernate in web applications. It basically talks about ASP.NET concepts, though. Following it, another chapter explains how we can build our own ASP.NET providers using NHibernate (Membership, Role). The available entity generators for NHibernate are referred and evaluated on a chapter of their own, the list is fine (CodeSmith, nhib-gen, AjGenesis, Visual NHibernate, MyGeneration, NGen, NHModeler, Microsoft T4 (?) and hbm2net), examples are provided whenever possible, however, I have some problems with some of the evaluations: for example, Visual NHibernate scores 5 out of 5 on Visual Studio integration, which simply does not exist! I suspect the author means to say that it can be launched from inside Visual Studio, but then, what can't? Finally, there's a chapter I really don't understand. It seems like a bag where a lot of things are thrown in, like NHibernate Burrow (which actually isn't explained at all), Blog.Net components, CSS template conversion and web.config settings related to the maximum request length for file uploads and ending with XML configuration, with the help of GhostDoc. Like I said, the book is only good for absolute beginners, it does a fair job in explaining the very basics, but lack a lot of not-so-basic concepts. Among other things, it lacks: Inheritance mapping strategies (table per class hierarchy, table per class, table per concrete class) Load versus Get usage Other usefull ISession methods First level cache (Identity Map pattern) Other collection types other that Bag (Set, List, Map, IdBag, etc Fetch options User Types Filters Named queries LINQ examples HQL examples And that's it!   Every few seconds our new Cisco ASA 5505 firewall is logging errors that I can't figure out with my limited Cisco experience. Severity Date Time Syslog ID Source IP Destination IP Description 3 Mar 25 2010 17:21:14 305006 8.8.8.8 regular translation creation failed for icmp src inside:10.10.0.200 dst outside:8.8.8.8 (type 3, code 3) 3 Mar 25 2010 17:18:37 305006 8.8.4.4 regular translation creation failed for icmp src inside:10.10.0.200 dst outside:8.8.4.4 (type 3, code 3) The logged inside IP is our internal DNS resolver, and the outside IP's are Google's public DNS servers. ICMP Type 3 Code 3 means "Port Unreachable" Our "outside" interface has a fixed IP and our "inside" interface is in the 10.10.0.0/16 subnet. The 'Inspect DNS' Service Policy is enabled, with the preset DNS inspection map. Furthermore there's an ACL that allows all inbound ICMP on the "outside" interface. I've spent hours trying to figure this one out, so any and all advice is welcome!

• What happens to C# 4 optional parameters when compiling against 3.5?

  Here’s a method declaration that uses optional parameters: public Path Copy( Path destination, bool overwrite = false, bool recursive = false) Something you may not know is that Visual Studio 2010 will let you compile this against .NET 3.5, with no error or warning. You may be wondering (as I was) how it does that. Well, it takes the easy and rather obvious way of not trying to be too smart and just ignores the optional parameters. So if you’re compiling against 3.5 from Visual Studio 2010, the above code is equivalent to: public Path Copy( Path destination, bool overwrite, bool recursive) The parameters are not optional (no such thing in C# 3), and no overload gets magically created for you. If you’re building a library that is going to have both 3.5 and 4.0 versions, and you want 3.5 users to have reasonable overloads of your methods, you’ll have to provide those yourself, which means that providing a version with optional parameters for the benefit of 4.0 users is not going to provide that much value, except for the ability to provide named parameters out of order. I guess that’s not so bad… Providing all of the following overloads will compile against both 3.5 and 4.0: public Path Copy(Path destination)public Path Copy(Path destination, bool overwrite)public Path Copy( Path destination, bool overwrite = false, bool recursive = false)

• Massive Network Upgrade

  I find myself tasked with organizing an upgrade of our entire Active Directory from server 2003 to 2008. We run a few AD dependant services such as Exchange 2007 SQL Server 2008 SharePoint 2007 All of which we are looking to bring up to date as well with their most recent versions. The original AD was a little bit of a mess (the exchange upgrade from 2003 left some stuff in the AD database that I make references to servers that no longer exist for example). Here is what I want to accomplish Migrate the domain from our 2003 to a NEW clean 2008r2 domain Upgrade from Sharepoint 2007 to 2010 Upgrade Exchange from 2007 to 2010 My question is, in what order do we do things? Can I do a domain upgrade and simply migrate exchange after? On their own, these objectives are complicated enough, orchestrating them in our company while minimizing downtime is making my head spin. I have done a lot of the research on how to do them individually but I am having trouble figuring out how to do them all in concert.

• Ideas for my MSc project and Google Summer of Code 2011

  I'm currently putting together ideas for my master's project which I'll be working on over the summer, and I would like to be able to use this time to help Ubuntu in some way. I have the freedom to come up with pretty much any project in the field of software development/engineering provided it Is a substantial piece of software (for reference, I will be working on it for five full months) Solves a problem for more people than just myself I was hoping to use this project as an opportunity to get some experience with the underbelly of Linux, so that I can mention on my CV that I have 'experience in developing for *NIX in C++', which I'm noticing more and more companies are looking for these days, probably because stuff's moving to cloud servers and that's where Linux rules the roost. My problem is that, since I don't have the experience to begin with, I'm not sure what to do for such a project, and I was wondering if anyone could help me with this. I've noticed from Daniel Holbach's blog that Ubuntu participated in the Google Summer of Code 2010, and that project ideas for that can be found here. However, I have not been able to find anything related to Ubuntu and GSoC 2011, but I have noticed from the GSoC timeline that the list of mentoring organisations will not be published until March 18th. I have two questions here. Has Ubuntu applied to be a part of Summer of Code 2011, and what is the status of the 2010 project list linked to earlier. Were they all implemented or are there still some that can be picked up now, should I not participate in GSoC? I'd like to do something for Ubuntu, but I'd rather not spend my time reinventing the wheel.

  I've recently installed Ubuntu 12.04 64-bit on a HP Envy 15 1104tx. Most stuff appears to be working fine with the exception of the two USB3 ports (USB2 port works fine). I've read a lot of articles but so far have not been able to find a solution. I've tried adding 'pci=nomsi' to '/etc/default/grub' but this made no difference. Some articles suggest booting into Windows and upgrading the firmware on the uPD720200. Any body had any experience of this? Is there a way I can checked the firmware version of the NEC uPD720200 in Linux to see if there is an update available? Ayer se presentó, junto con American Express y CocaCola, la tercera edición del programa Cross Company Mentoring, una iniciativa en la que las tres empresas colaboran facilitando mentores (profesionales experimentados) para promover el desarrollo profesional de individuos de talento en las tres empresas. La originalidad del programa estriba en que los mentores colaboran con el desarrollo de los profesionales de las otras empresas participantes y no sólo con los propios. La presentación inicial fue realizada por Alfredo García-Valverde, presidente de American Express en España. Posteriormente, Julia B. López, de American Express, y Rosa María Arias, de Oracle (en ese orden en la foto), han detallado en qué consiste la iniciativa, además de hacer balance de la edición anterior. Aunque este programa -complementario de los que ya funcionan en las tres empresas- está disponible para hombres y mujeres, hay que destacar que buena parte de su razón de ser está en potenciar el papel de mujeres profesionales de talento en las compañías. En términos generales, todas las grandes organizaciones se encuentran con un problema similar en el desarrollo del talento femenino. Independientemente del número de mujeres que formen parte de la plantilla de la empresa, lo cierto es que su número decrece de forma drástica cuando hablamos de los puestos directivos. La ruptura de ese "techo de cristal" es una prioridad para las empresas, tanto por motivos de simple justicia social, como por aprovechar al máximo todo el potencial del talento que ya existe dentro de las organizaciones, evitando que el talento femenino se "pierda" por no poder facilitar las oportunidades adecuadas para su desarrollo. La iniciativa de Cross Company Mentoring tiene unos objetivos bien definidos. En primer lugar, desarrollar el talento con un método innovador que permite conocer las mejores prácticas en otras empresas y aprovechar el talento externo. Adicionalmente, como ha señalado Julia López, es un método que nos fuerza a salir de la zona de confort, de las prácticas tradicionalmente aceptadas dentro de cada organización y que difícilmente se ponen en cuestión. El segundo objetivo es que el Mentee, el máximo beneficiario del programa, aprenda de la experiencia de profesionales de gran trayectoria para desarrollar sus propias soluciones en los retos que le plantee su carrera profesional. El programa que se ha presentado ahora, la tercera edición, arrancará en el próximo mes y estará vigente hasta finales de año. Seguro que tendrá tanto éxito como en las dos ediciones anteriores.

I tried to verify this and neither couldn't find a bug entry nor a documentation saying the 10.2.0.4 has a different default setting (default behaviour is WAIT). If this parameter is not explicitly specified, then database commit behavior defaults to writing commit records to disk before control is returned to the client. If only IMMEDIATE or BATCH is specified, but not WAIT or NOWAIT, then WAIT mode is assumed. • MVVM Light Toolkit V3 SP1 for Windows Phone 7

  He he I start to sound like Microsoft… Anyway… I just released a service pack (SP1) for MVVM Light Toolkit V3. Why? Well mostly because I worked a bit more with the Windows Phone 7 tools that were released at MIX0, and I noticed a few things that could be better in the Windows Phone 7 template. Also, I only found out at MIX that you can actually install custom project templates for Visual Studio Express. For some reason I thought it was not possible. The best way to solve these issues is through a service pack, which consists of a few zip files. Simply follow the instructions on the “Installing Manually” page. You can go ahead and overwrite the files that were installed with V3, all the file structure and names are exactly the same. What? So what do you get in this service pack that was not already in V3? (for more info about what’s new in V3, check the What’s New page). Project and Item templates for Visual Studio 10 Express (phone edition). Unzip these files in your “My Documents” folder, and you can now create a new MVVM Light application in the WinPhone7 version of Visual Studio 2010 Express. Signed assemblies: All the assemblies are now signed, which is a requirement in certain build configurations. XML documentation files: Thanks to Matt Casto for pinging me and reminding me that I had forgotten to include them (doh). New and improved Windows Phone 7 assemblies and templates: This one deserves its own section (see below). What was wrong with the old Silverlight 3 assemblies in Windows Phone 7 projects? It was kind of weird. Functionality wise, it was working just right. However, if you noticed, the EventToCommand behavior was not visible in the Assets tab of Expression Blend, under Behaviors, where it should normally have been. The reason was that even though the Windows Phone 7 is using Silverlight 3, the System.Windows.Interactivity that Blend was expecting is the version that is normally used in Silverlight 4. Yeah, I know, it’s weird. This led me to create a specific version of these assemblies for the phone. The assemblies are located into C:\Program Files\Laurent Bugnion (GalaSoft)\Mvvm Light Toolkit\Binaries\WP7. There are 3 DLLs: GalaSoft.MvvmLight.WP7.dll with RelayCommand, Messenger and ViewModelBase GalaSoft.MvvmLight.Extras.WP7.dll with EventToCommand and DispatcherHelper System.Windows.Interactivity.dll which is the same DLL installed in the Blend SDK, and which is needed for the EventToCommand behavior to work. • Glassfish V3 won't start

  Hi everybody, I installed NetBeans 6.8 and tried to run the GlasshFish V3 server. I'm working under Windows Vista 32 Bits. First, it won't run. • Unity Plugin DLLNotFoundException

  I am using a plugin DLL that I created in Visual C++ Express 2010 on windows 7 64 bit Ultimate Edition. The DLL functions properly on the machine that it was originally created on. The problem is that the DLL is not functioning in the Unity3d Editor on another machine and giving an error that basically states that the DLL is missing some of its dependencies. The target machine is running Windows 7 Home 64 bit (if this is relevant) Results from the error log of Dependency Walker: Error: The Side-by-Side configuration information for "c:\users\dewayne\desktop\shared\vrpnplugin\unityplugin\build\release\OPTITRACKPLUGIN.DLL" contains errors. The application has failed to start because its side-by-side configuration is incorrect. Please see the application event log or use the command-line sxstrace.exe tool for more detail (14001). Error: At least one module has an unresolved import due to a missing export function in an implicitly dependent module. Error: Modules with different CPU types were found. Warning: At least one delay-load dependency module was not found. Warning: At least one module has an unresolved import due to a missing export function in a delay-load dependent module.
