• How to use all the cores in Windows 7?

  I am not sure if this belongs to Stackoverflow or Superuser but I thought I would ask here. I have a console based application written in C which currently takes about an hour to terminate in Windows 7 64-bit OS. The task manager reports that the application is using only 25% of the available CPU. I would like to reduce the run time by increasing cpu usage. Is there any way to let the application use all four cores (the laptop has Core i5) instead of just one? I am assuming that task manager reports 25% because only one core is allocated to the program.

I know i miss a bracket, but my function isn't finished. • What's the best way to replace the first letter of a string in Java?

  I'm trying to convert the first letter of a string to lowercase. I know there's a capitalize method, but I want to accomplish the opposite. This is the code I used: value.substring(0,1).toLowerCase() + value.substring(1) Effective, but feels a bit manual. Are there any other ways to do it? Any better ways? Any Java string functions that do it for you? I was thinking of using something like a replace function, but Java's replace doesn't accept an index as a parameter. You have to pass the actual character/substring. Another way I can think of doing it is something like: value.replaceFirst(value.charAt(0), value.charAt(0).toLowerCase()) Except that replaceFirst expects 2 strings, so the value.charAt(0)s would probably need to be replaced with value.substring(0,1)s. Is this any better? Does it matter? Is there any standard way to do this?

  Hi, I work on apllication which allows plugins to access different set of functionality, every plugin provides "initialization string" which sets level of access to different features. Developers send me this strings, and I encrypt them using my 1024 bit RSA private key and send encoded data back. When started, my application decodes encoded data(encoded initialisation string) using built-in public key and if "decoded data != initialization string" it fails to start. So, is it possible to use a database of "initialization string" = "encoded initialization string"(extracted from other plugins) to crack my private key, or make it possible to bruteforce it in reasonable time?

  Hi All, I have a bit of code that works with a result set called "result" (original I know) but depending on the incoming variable I'd like to fire the specific query depending. I have the below in an if statement but that just makes the "result" recordset gets those nasty red lines and it doesn't work.   I have to develop a class which can run it's own hard-coded task in a background thread and communicate with container class sending him progress updates and taking messages from it. I believe I am going to extend BackgroundWorker class but it looks a bit weird to extend and I haven't managed to find a good example wit Google. Can you share a link to a good example of solving such a task? Please don't offer placing a BackgroundWorker visually on a form and reading the standard tutorial, it's not for my case. Maybe I'd better not extend but encapsulate a BackgroundWorker, but I hardly understand how to use it outide WinForms designer either :-(

• Representing parent-child relationships in SharePoint lists

  I need to create some functionality in our SharePoint app that populates a list or lists with some simple hierarchical data. Each parent record will represent a "submission" and each child record will be a "submission item." There's a 1-to-n relationship between submissions and submission items. Is this practical to do in SharePoint? The only types of list relationships I've done so far are lookup columns, but this seems a bit different. Also, once such a list relationship is established, then what's the best way to create views on this kind of data. I'm almost convinced that it'd be easier just to write this stuff to an external database, but I'd like to give SharePoint a shot in order to take advantage of the automated search capabilities.

• jquery ui-effects-wrapper causing havoc

  Hi all, I am using jquery-ui and at some point I use the show and hide functions quite heavily to animate changing images coming in and out. From some reason, after a few tries all of a sudden the controls on my page stop responding to clicks. After a bit of poking arround using firebug I discovered my page is filled with div's of the class ui-effects-wrapper. I have no idea why this happens or how to stop it. If I remove these divs I can no longer see the images I've been animating. Any ideas?

  So I am dumb and I have this: select whatever from bank_accs b1, bank_accs b2, table3 t3 where t3.bank_acc_id = t1.bank_acc_id and b2.bank_acc_number = b1.bank_acc_number and b2.currency_code(+) = t3.buy_currency and trunc(sysdate) between nvl(b2.start_date, trunc(sysdate)) and nvl(b2.end_date, trunc(sysdate)); My problem is with the date (actuality) check on b2. Now, I need to return a row for each t3xb1 (t3 = ~10 tables joined, of course), even if there are ONLY INVALID records (date-wise) in b2. How do I outer-join this bit properly? Can't use ANSI joins, must do in a single flat query. Thanks.

After I created the graphics object g and called DrawImage: the requested rectangle (toZoom) will be copied to bmp, or will it be displayed on the screen? I am a bit confused, can somebody please clarify?

  I am trying to give a LocationClient a two-minute period to connect before calling getLastLocation on it. Initially I implemented this with a Timer (and TimerTask), but because Timers do not work in sleepmode, I would like to translate it to an AlarmManager. However, I am a bit confused as to how to do this, considering an AlarmManager calls another class, whereas I want to remain in the same class and simply delay for a two-minute period.   I need to take a number from a list and convert it to a number so that i can pass it as a parameter. im trying to make a 1-bit adder in scheme. i've written the code for the or gate and the xor gate and also the half adder and now im trying to combine them all to make a full adder. im not sure if im going about it the right way. any input will be appreciated thank you. • Making a video with opencv and ffmpeg. How to find the right color format?

  I have a webcam video recorder program built with python, opencv and ffmpeg It works ok except that the color of the video is more blue than the reality. The problem seems to come from color format of images. It seems that OpenCv is giving BGR images and ffmpeg+libx264 is expecting YUV420p. I've read that YUV420p correspond to YCbCr. opencv has no conversion from BGR to YCbCr. It only has a conversion to YCrCb. I have made some searchs and tried different alternatives to try converting opencv image to something that could be ok for ffmpeg+libx264. None is working. At this point, I am a bit lost and I would appreciate any pointer that could help me to fix this color issue.

  Hi all, I'm having a problem with processing a largeish file in Python. All I'm doing is f = gzip.open(pathToLog, 'r') for line in f: counter = counter + 1 if (counter % 1000000 == 0): print counter f.close This takes around 10m25s just to open the file, read the lines and increment this counter. In perl, dealing with the same file and doing quite a bit more (some regular expression stuff), the whole process takes around 1m17s. • Libxml2: undefined reference to xmlTextReaderConstName

  I have installed the latest libxml2-2.8.0, as usual: $ ./configure, $ make, $ make install. The $ xml2-config --cflags --libs gives this output: -I/usr/local/include/libxml2 -L/usr/local/lib -lxml2 -lm But trying to compile any example... $ gcc `xml2-config --cflags --libs` xmltest.c The linker says: /tmp/cc8ezrPl.o: In function `processNode': xmltest.c:(.text+0x19): undefined reference to `xmlTextReaderConstName' xmltest.c:(.text+0x38): undefined reference to `xmlTextReaderConstValue' ...etc. Anything I've googled can be solved by xml2-config --cflags --libs flags, or upgrading to the latest version of libxml2, or something. Unfortunately, neither works for me. What can be the steps to identify the problem? Using Ubuntu 12.04 64-bit.

• Design patter for extending Android's activities?

  While programming on Android, I end up writing a parent activity which is extended by several others. A bit like ListActivity. My parent activity extends Activity. if I intend to use a Map or a List, I can't use my parent activity as superclass - the child activity can only extend one activity obviously. As such I end up writing my parent activities with the same logic for Activity, ListActivity, MapActivity and so forth. What am I looking for is some sort of trait functionality/design pattern which would help in this case. Any suggestions?

  I've installed a vb.net windows service on a Windows 2008 machine, that is attempting to connect to SQL 2005. The service starts succesfully, but can't see the database. The event log has the following entry. The description for Event ID 0 from source SU4.ESMR.DAL.Job.FillPriorityJobByType(oJobDS, TypeID: 3 cannot be found. Either the component that raises this event is not installed on your local computer or the installation is corrupted. You can install or repair the component on the local computer. This was tested locally on both XP and 2008. All environments are 32 bit.

• Problem with increment in inline ARM assembly

  Hi , i have the following bit of inline ARM assembly, it works in a debug build but crashes in a release build of iphone sdk 3.1. The problem is the add instructions where i am incrementing the address of the C variables output and x by 4 bytes, this is supposed to increment by the size of a float. • PODS + WP Theme

  So I managed to setup pods and create my custom tables. Now I want to revamp my theme so that it pulls data from the POD table. Doesn't seem to be working... This is what I did.. I have a Pod called 'project_type' with a name (string) and a code (string) field. Have also added 3 entries via the admin system. I made a copy of the default wordpress plugin and renamed it to myTheme and activated it. Inside index.php of myTheme, I removed all the default code.. and have just the POD specific code as shown below. <?php echo "Hello World"; $p = new Pod('project_type'); echo $p->getTotalRows(); ?> However, when I reload my page, only Hello World shows up? A bit new to Wordpress so kindly advice.

• Data format for content heavy iPhone app - Plist or XML?

  Hello, I'm building an iPhone app that is essentially a book, it will be bundled with a lot of text-heavy content. I considered bundling the data as XML and load it when the application starts but the XML would contain a lot of nested structures and be a bit of a pain to parse. Would it be better to use a plist? I'm concerned about memory usage and plists are loaded entirely into memory - can they be parsed in chunks? Is there a maximum size to a plist and how efficient are they? I'm not sure how big the bundled content is going to be yet but I should imagine it could be anywhere from 500k to 4MB. Thanks in advance.

  I need to access some constants in my jsp, and sadly the EL does not offer any functionality for it. There are some options like the unstandard tag library, but I'd like to keep it a bit more standard. I tried: <%@ page import = "com.jackdane.Constants"%> <c:if test="${object.display == '<%=com.jackdane.Constants.YES %>}'"> //some display logic </c:if> But that doesn't appear to do the trick. It's been a while since I've used an expression so I might have made an error. Any input is appreciated. Edit: To clarify, the constants class is not in my control. It's inside a jar file that I recieved. It contains no getters/setters. Just private static final Strings.

• How to load mht from stream/string into a WebBrowser control?

  The WebBrowser control loads properly any mht file if I use the Navigate method, but when I use the DocumentText or DocumentStream properties, the source of the mht file is displayed as if I opened the file in notepad. If I write the stream to a temp file then Navigate to it, it works properly, but I don't want to do it this way. This issue seems common, but I didn't find a working solution for it. Some people suggest I should fool IE by implementing IPersistMoniker com interface, ...etc. I have tried with this a little bit, but unfortunately I got the same result. May be I have done something wrong. I still feel their should be a more straightforward solution (other than saving in a temp file first), any idea?

• m and s keys do not work over vnc connection to ubuntu server

  I'm new at setting a lot of this up, so bear with me. I installed Ubuntu 10.4 server on a 64 bit machine. Then I added vnc so I could manage it while it's racked. I start the server, SSH to it, and run vncserver :1 At this point, all keys work fine. Next I exit out of the SSH session and fire up my client vnc app. I connect via the IP :1, enter my password, and everything seems to be fine. Now when I enter a terminal (through the vnc connection) I cannot type lowercase "s" or "m" (upper case works). I've tried on two different pc's running the vnc client, but it's the same. I also installed the latest updates from Ubuntu as of today. Thanks for any help.
