• Homebrew requires something uninstall-developer-folder removes

  I was having trouble installing irssi (brew install irssi), so I ran brew doctor, which returned a warning mentioning an outdated copy of Xcode and saying I should run /Developer/Library/uninstall-developer-folder. Then I ran brew doctor again and got: Error: No such file or directory - /Developer/SDKs/MacOSX10.6.sdk How do I reinstall the SDK, or is there another way to get Homebrew working again? UPDATE: /Developer actually still exists (despite the obvious implication of uninstall-developer-folder), as does /Developer/SDKs/MacOSX10.7.sdk. Why does Homebrew specifically need Snow Leopard's SDK?

• 12.04 - How do I Fix Grub Error 15 on New Dual Boot Install

  I just installed 12.04 to Dual Boot (separate partitions) with an existing Win 7. Upon reboot after install things freeze after Grub 1.5 with a Grub Error 15 message. Is there any easy way to fix this? (I am posting this from my second computer) UPDATE: I managed to boot into both 12.04 and Win7 using BIOS: Selected the disk with the Win7 'C' Partition: resulted in the same error message Rebooted, tried the disk with the Ubuntu Partitions: *Grub Menu loaded: Managed to boot 12.04, rebooted, used BIOS again: Managed to boot Win 7 So, I have access to my computer again (thru BIOS), but this has been a pretty crappy install experience. Garth I used the the Final release 12.04 Ubuntu install disk, reformatted all Linux partitions, and expected a simple clean install. Other than specifying the Ubuntu Partitions, I did a basic install of 12.04. No way I did do anything to get this crap error failure! I have no idea why my install resulted in a Grub-15 error. • How to install apt-get on a busybox embedded system?

  My embedded system is for sh4 CPU. The debian distribution may get on http://www.si-linux.co.jp/pub/debian-sh/lenny-sh4/ I get the apt*.deb and extract the data.tar.gz. After setup the /etc/apt/sources.list, I could do 'apt-get update'. But it missing dependency when I try to run 'apt-get install ntpdate'. Is there any method to let apt-get ignore some base packages? Because those package is build by my original embedded system.(eg. busybox).

  hi all, i've been struggling with this for a while now: i can't install greasemonkey on my firefox portable 3.5.5 :( it must be something with the latest update to 3.5.5. (i'm having win7 x64 ultimate) upgrading greasemonkey didn't work so i completely de-installed it and then tried (no success): installing greasemonkey via addons-dialog installing .xpi manually installing with "restart firefox" button installing by quitting + restarting firefox it simply just won't install / show up under addons. of course i de-activated all other plugins and started firefox as administrator. any ideas? thx

• What is the correlation between programming language and experience/skills of their users?

  I'm sure there is such a correlation, because experience and skill leads good programmers to picking languages that are better for them, in which they're more productive, and working in a language forms how programmers think and influences their methods and skills. Is there any research or some statistical data of this phenomenon? Perhaps this is not a purely academic question. For example, if someone is starting a new project, it could be worth considering a language (among other criteria of course) for which there is a higher chance of finding or attracting experienced programmers. Update: Please don't fixate on the last paragraph. It's not my intention to choose a language based on this criterion, and I know there are other far more important ones. My interested is mostly academic. It comes from the (subjective) observation and I wonder if someone has researched it a bit. Also, I'm talking about a correlation, not about a rule. Sure there are both great and terrible programmers in every language. Just that in general it seems to me there is a correlation.

• Controlling what data populates STAR

  Beginning with the Primavera Reporting Database 2.2\P6 Analytics 1.2 release, the first release that supported the P6 Extended Schema, a new ability was added to filter which projects could be included during an ETL run. In previous releases, all projects were included in an ETL run. Additionally, all projects with the option to enable publication are included in the ETL run by default.Because the reporting needs for P6 Extended Schema are different from those of STAR, you can define a filter that will limit the data that is included in the STAR schema. For example, your STAR schema can be filter to only include all projects in a specific Portfolio, or all projects with a project code assignment of 'For Analytics.'  Any criteria that can be defined in a Where clause and added to a view can be used to filter the projects included in the STAR schema. I highly suggest this approach when dealing with large databases. Unnecessary projects could cause the Extract portion of the ETL process to take longer. A table in STAR called etl_projectlist is the key for what projects are targeted during the ETL process. To setup the filter, perform the following steps:1. Connect to your Primavera P6 Project Management Database as Pxrptuser (extended schema owner) and create a new view:create or replace view star_project_viewasselect PROJECTOBJECTID objectidfrom projectportfolio pp, projectprojectportfolio pppwhere pp.objectid = ppp.PROJECTPORTFOLIOOBJECTIDand pp.name = 'STAR Projects'--The main field that MUST be selected in the view is the projectobjectid. Selecting any other field besides the projectobjectid will cause the view to be invalid and will not work. Any Where clause can be used, but projectobjectid is the key.2. In your STAR installation directory go the \res folder and edit the staretl.properties file.  Here you will define the view to be used.  Add the following line or update if exists:star.project.filter.ds1=star_project_view3. • Why does this game loop stop my process from responding?

  I implemented a fixed time step loop for my C# game. All it does at the moment is make a square bounce around the screen. The problem I'm having is that when I execute the program, I can't close it from the window's close button and the cursor is stuck on the "busy" icon. I have to go into Visual Studio and stop the program manually.   In web design , it's usually needed to design an image for example in Photoshop and then use multiple sizes of it. but I don't understand something here : When I resize the image (PNG or JPG) and reduce the dimensions of that in Photoshop , the image quality extremely gets reduced and the edges become messy while resizing the image in a simple software like Microsoft Paint gives a really better output! So what's the reason ? Is there a trick in Photoshop for image resizing which I've missed? Thanks for your help.   I frequently receive mock-ups of HTML forms with the following prototype: Some long winded yes or no question?   (o) Yes   ( ) No The (o) and ( ) in this prototype represent radio buttons. My personal view is that if the question has only a true or false value then it should be a check box. That said, I have seen this sort of "layout" from almost every designer I've ever worked with. If I were not to question their decision, or question the client's decision, I'd probably mark it up like this: <p class="pseudo_label">Some long winded yes or no question?</p> <input type="radio" name="the_question" id="the_question_yes" value="1"> <label for="the_question_yes" class="after_radio">Yes</label> <input type="radio" name="the_question" id="the_question_no" value="0"> <label for="the_question_no" class="after_radio">No</label> I really don't want to do that. I want to push back and convince them that this should really be a check box and not two radio buttons. But my question is, if I can't convince them – you're welcome to help me try – how should I code that original design requirement such that it is semantic and at least understandable for screen reader users? If I were able to convince my tormentors to change their minds, I would likely code it in the following fashion: <label for="the_question">Some long winded yes or no question?</label> <input type="checkbox" name="the_question" id="the_question" value="1"> What do you think about this issue? • Forwarding a subdomain to main domain using Godaddy

  I have current blog, which was hosted on Tumblr at http://blog.ryanhayes.net. I'm moving it over to http://ryanhayes.net, and have all the 301 redirects set up for the blog entries to map to my new blog, which is hosted using Godaddy (domain included). When I try to set up a subdomain forward, I'm greeted with a nice 403 Forbidden response (as of this writing, you can see it at http://blog.ryanhayes.net. When I try to ping both the subdomain and domain, they point to the same IP address, so I know blog subdomain has at least switched over to point to the same content. I don't really understand why I would get a 403 Forbidden on the same content that I can see perfectly fine via another domain. Currently, I have a CNAME of blog pointing to @, which is how "www" is set up to forward, so I'm assuming it would do the same thing. My question is what is the proper way to set up my DNS to make the blog subdomain forward to my main domain (301) using the GoDaddy DNS manager? Bonus: What is the background on why I am getting a 403 error the current way? Forbidden You don't have permission to access / on this server. Additionally, a 403 Forbidden error was encountered while trying to use an ErrorDocument to handle the request. UPDATE 12/7/2010 Error on site has been fixed, you can no longer view it from my site.

• Metro Apps on Win 8 aren't working with static ip behind auth proxy

  In Windows 8 Professional, Metro Apps and Windows Update do not work on static IP settings behind authenticated proxy server. They work on DHCP on the same proxy settings. (We have DHCP for wifi and static IP for LAN, both using the same proxy server). IE, Chrome and other desktop apps work nicely on both. Metro apps worked on an auth proxy (DHCP only), when I changed their proxy settings from the 'edit group policy' option. (StartSettingsEdit Group PolicyComputer ConfigurationAdministrative TemplatesNetwork IsolationInternet Proxy for Apps) Can this be fixed?

• Is there a VNC server for mac with decent international keyboard support?

  Hi, I'm having trouble finding a VNC server for Mac OS X that allows me to connect from a Windows box with German keyboard layout. I've tried the built-in desktop sharing and several versions of Vine but all of them had problems with several keys. Does maybe anyone know about a working combination of a Mac OS X VNC server and Windows VNC client which properly supports a German keyboard layout on the client? Update: I don't think the Windows client is the problem, because I have no issues connecting to Linux boxes. And I've tried several different clients.

  I need to provide the recommended amount of RAM and disc space (divided in two partitions) so the customer can create an appropriate virtual machine to run Oracle. All I could find in the documentation was a brief listing with minimum RAM and typical/advanced install types. The virtual machine will run latest Oracle Standard Edition One (11g release 2 so far) under Windows Server 2008 x64 and will host a reasonably low traffic web application. How much RAM and disc must I ask for in order to be safe? (Feel free to ask for further details if I've omitted something relevant.) Update: Rough estimations: Database size: 10 MB after installation Growth rate: +3MB per day on average Size of database 'active' data: (not sure of what this means, there's not actual archive so I guess all data is current) Amount of data written per second in peak hours: a few KB Number of client sessions: 3 or 4 at most Frequency and response size of most heavy requests: some reports make heavy table JOINS that need up to 20 seconds to complete but they won't return more than a few thousand rows with plain text. The app also handles BLOBs (typical size from 50KB to 200KB)

• Server not sending a SYN/ACK packet in response to a SYN packet

  Using iptraf, tcpdump and wireshark I can see a SYN packet coming in but only the ACK FLAG is set in reply packet. • bluetooth headset can connect, but not visible in pulse audio

  I have a plantronics bluetooth headset, and until yesterday I could use it without any problem. However, today it suddenly stopped working (maybe related to the last software update I did). I can still connect/disconnect my headset, but it doesn't show up in pulse audio anymore. I read through various posts that describes kind of the same problem, but none of the suggested solutions worked. • How to fix White Screen of Death after updating iTunes?

  The other night I updated my iTunes to the latest version (through Software Update) when I came to turn on my computer I was greeted with the dreaded white screen of death. I use an early 2008 iMac 24". I've tried the basic things, unplugging/turning off accessories, trying to boot from the install disk, reseting pram, etc, etc. Still no luck and no change what-so-ever. All I've been able to ascertain that my keyboard still works (by ejecting). I should point out that I did recently replace my Hard drive with a Western Digital Black 500GB (though the computer is well out of warrenty) and I'm a little concerned that the problem could be the screen.

• Partial recalculation of visibility on a 2D uniform grid

  Problem Imagine that we have a 2D uniform grid of dimensions N x N. For this grid we have also pre-computed a visibility look-up table, e.g. with DDA, which answers the boolean query is cell X visible from cell Y? The look-up table is a complete graph KN of the cells V in the grid, with each edge E being a binary value denoting the visibility between its vertices. Question If any given cell has its visibility modified, is it possible to extract the subset Edelta of edges which must have their visibility recomputed due to the change, so as to avoid a full-on recomputation for the entire grid? (Which is N(N-1) / 2 or N2 depending on the implementation) Update If is not possible to solve thi in closed form, then maintaining a separate mapping of each cell and every cell pair who's line intersects said cell might also be an option. This obviously consumes more memory, but the data is static. The increased memory requirement could be reduced by introducing a hierarchy, subdividing the grid into smaller parts, and by doing so the above mapping can be reused for each sub-grid. This would come at a cost in terms of increased computation relative to the number of subdivisions; also requiring a resumable ray-casting algorithm.

  i've just started using a new ec2 install of ubuntu karmic 9.10 and my first task was to install the jdk. when running apt-get install sun-java6-jdk i get the following: Reading package lists... Done Building dependency tree Reading state information... Done Package sun-java6-jdk is not available, but is referred to by another package. This may mean that the package is missing, has been obsoleted, or is only available from another source E: Package sun-java6-jdk has no installation candidate i've tried apt-get update as well as adding deb http://us.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ karmic universe to /etc/apt/sources.list any ideas fellas?

• how to configure my internal dns to resolve external resources

  I have an internal DNS as part of my AD setup. I have an hosted DNS for public resources (which are typically at some data centre somewhere) Occasionally while on our internal network I need to get to a public resource --- for example www.ourcompany.com since there isn't a www record in our internal DNS I cant get the name resolved. How do I configure my DNS to forward names it doesn't recognise to the public DNS. Update: As per the comment yes I have a "split-horizon" dns (which seemed like a good idea at the time) This AD setup is less than 24 hours old, and can be redone if need be -- (although I would rather not)

• CRL checking problem windows 2003

  Hi all, we have CRL that is valid for 24 hours and has a next update in 12 hours. The CRL is valid from 12:12 AM to 12:12 AM and from 12:12 PM to 12:12 PM. In the logs of the CRL hosting webserver we see that one of our servers not always fetches the CRL at night, in most cases the server that missed the CRL IIS servers 403.16 on 12:13 PM. Is our following theory good: when a windows server misses fetching the CRL on it's nextUpdate but the current CRL is still valid, the fetching is not retried? This leads to a situation that when the CRL expires there is no overlap and gives a little time of 403.16 situations in IIS since the CRL is not thrusted and so all certificates are marked als unsafe? greetings, Tim

  hi, we're running ubuntu 8.04 LTS and plesk 9.2 our simple task is to set up a periodic black list for spamassassin, e.g. using this script .. #!/bin/sh #! Script by AJR to update local spamassassin rules cd /tmp wget -c http://www.stearns.org/sa-blacklist/sa-blacklist.current mv sa-blacklist.current local.cf -f mv local.cf /etc/mail/spamassassin -f rm local.cf -f /etc/init.d/psa-spamassassin restart now, this script runs fine, but plesk doesn't seem to recognize the blacklist in its GUI. which is annoying, especially because plesk itself writes to /etc/mail/spamassassin/local.cf. i wasn't able to find out the secret place, where plesk distinguishes between entries in local.cf added via GUI and command line. any help is appreciated! thanks.

• Can I use a Retail DVD media with an OEM key to install Windows Vista?

  I got a Fujitsu computer with OEM license key and Windows Vista. I would like to reinstall Windows on it. But I didn't get any Windows media with it. However, I do poses more than just one DVD installation disc from my Retail copies of Windows Vista that I use on other computers. Can I use this media instead? Or do I have to order a specialty OEM DVD media from the manufacturer or Microsoft? Update: I have found some partition called "EISA" configuration partition. It is a hidden partition that I found in Disk Management. How can I make use of this? Do I boot from it or do I mount it to a drive letter and access it inside Windows? Can this be used to restore the computer? It is about 11 GB in size.
