  • Temporary background image while the big one is loading? [migrated]

    Is there a way, without javascript, to load a small image for a background before the real image is downloaded? Without javascript because I know how to do it with it. I can't test if the following CSS3 would work because it works too quick: body { background-image:url('hugefile.jpg'), url('tinypreload.jpg'); } If the tinypreload.jpg is only, say 20k, and the hugefile.jpg is 300k -- would this accomplish the task? I assume that both downloads would start at the same time instead of being consecutive.

    You probably know that I’m a big fan of Slyce Software’s Visual NHibernate. To me, it is the best tool for generating your entities and mappings from an existing database (it also allows you to go the other way, but I honestly have never used it that way). What I like most about it: Great support: folks at Slyce always listen to your suggestions, give you feedback in a timely manner, and I was even lucky enough to have some of my suggestions implemented! The templating engine, which is very powerful, and more user-friendly than, for example, MyGeneration’s; one of the included templates is Sharp Architecture; Advanced model validations: it even warns you about having lazy properties declared in non-lazy entities; Integration with NHibernate Validator and generation of validation rules automatically based on the database, or on user-defined model settings; The designer: they opted for not displaying all entities in a single screen, which I think was a good decision; has support for all inheritance strategies (table per class hierarchy, table per class, table per concrete class); Generation of FluentNHibernate mappings as well as hbm.xml. I could name others, but… why don’t you see for yourself? There is a demo version available for downloading. By the way, I am in no way related to Slyce, I just happen to like their software!

  • Which group memberships are necessary for simple users in Ubuntu 12.04?

    I'm configuring Ubuntu 12.04 for my sister. I'd like to give her a system that she really can't screw up, but can still do normal things like install software. I don't want to just add her user to /etc/sudoers so that she can become root because she could possibly mess something up. I know that I should be able to get around this by just adding her to the necessary groups, but I'm not sure which ones those should be. Could anyone suggest them or point me in the direction of some kind of list that heavily used software in Ubuntu requires group membership?

  • Need advice on which PCI SATA Controller Card to Purchase

    I have a major issue with the build of a machine I am trying to get up and running. My goal is to create a file server that will service the needs of my software development, personal media storage and streaming/media server needs, as well as provide a strong platform for backing up all this data in a routine, cron-job oriented German efficiency sort of way. The issue is a simple one - all my drives are SATA drives and my motherboard controller only contains 4 ports. Solving the issue has proven to be an unmitigated nightmare. I would like advice on the purchase of the following: 4 Port internal SATA / 2 Port external eSATA PCI SATA Controller Card that has the following features and/or advantages: It must function. If I plug it in and attach drives, I expect my system to still make it to the Operating System login screen. It must function on CentOS, and I mean it must function WELL and with MINIMAL hassle. If hassle is unavoidable, there shall be CLEAR CUT and EASY TO FOLLOW instructions on how to install drivers and other supporting software. I do not need nor want fakeRAID - I will be setting up any RAID configurations from within the operating system. Now, if I am able to find such a mythical device, I would be eternally grateful to whomever would be able to point me in the right direction, a direction which I assume will be paved with yellow bricks. I am prepared to pay a considerable sum of money (as SATA controller cards go) and so paying anywhere between 60 to 120 dollars will not be an issue whatsoever. Does such a magical device exist? The following link shows an "example" of the type of thing I am looking for, however, I have no way of verifying that once I plug this baby in that my system will still continue to function once I've attached the drives, or that once I've made it to the OS, I will be able to install whatever drivers or software programs I need to make it work with relative ease.   • Thoughts on schemas and schema proliferation

    In SQL Server 2005 Microsoft introduced user-schema separation and since then I have seen the use of schemas increase; whereas before I would typically see databases where all objects were in the [dbo] schema I now see databases that have multiple schemas, a database I saw recently had 31 (thirty one) of them. I can’t help but wonder whether this is a good thing or not – clearly 31 is an extreme case but I question whether multiple schemas create more problems than they solve? I have been involved in many discussions that go something like this: Developer #1> “I have a new function to add to the database and I’m not sure which schema to put it in” Developer #2> “What does it do?” Developer #1> “It provides data to a report in Reporting Services” Developer #2> “Ok, so put it in the [reports] schema” Developer #1> “Well I could, but the data will only be used by our Financial reporting folks so shouldn’t I put it in the [financial] schema?” Developer #2> “Maybe, yes” Developer #1> “Mind you, the data is supposed to be used for regulatory reporting to the FSA, should I put it in [regulatory]?” Developer #2> “Err….” You get the idea!!! The more schemas that exist in your database then the more chance that their supposed usages will overlap. I’m left wondering whether the use of schemas is actually necessary. I don’t view really see them as an aid to security because I generally believe that principles should be assigned permissions on objects as-needed on a case-by-case basis (and I have a stock SQL query that deciphers them all for me) so why bother using them at all? I can envisage a use where a database is used to house objects pertaining to many different business functions (which, in itself, is an ambiguous term) and in that circumstance perhaps a schema per business function would be appropriate; hence of late I have been loosely following this edict: If some objects in a database could be moved en masse to another database without the need to remove any foreign key constraints then those objects could legitimately exist in a dedicated schema.   • Looking for a free or open-source burner emulator [closed]

    Possible Duplicate: Virtual CDR driver I am looking for a free or open-source virtual CD/DVD emulator to run in a Windows environment. What I want is similar to what SlySoft's Virtual Clone Drive or Daemon Tools provides, but the emulated drive needs to be a burner of some type. The burner should be able to save disc images (.iso, .ccd, etc) to my harddrive - basically, the same as if I burned the files to a CD-R, and then ripped them back to a disc image. I have already looked around some and come across 2 - DVD neXt COPY iTurns and NoteBurner M4P. Both of these programs create a virtual CD-RW drive, but they are integrated into their product (for burning from iTunes to create mp3 files) and cannot create disc images. I am currently writing a piece of software that will have the capability to burn disc images onto CDs/DVDs, and I don't want to end up with a 100 coasters while I'm testing my software.   • My computer resets when i try to install Windows 7 (USB/DVD)

    I had a troublesome software starting up when Windows 7 was starting and i had no way to remove it because i couldn't log in to Windows. Not even safe mode. But i used Hiren's Boot CD to edit the registry to stop that software from starting up... But my efforts were not useful as Windows kept on going to an ultimate freeze just before the login screen should have been shown. And just freezes and I cannot do anything. So i decided heck with it and i now want to format the disk and reinstall a fresh copy of Windows 7. But now regardless of USB or DVD i use to boot the setup, it loads fine till you see the animating Windows and it just resets the laptop! Just plain resets! Hiren's Boot CD and Mini XP, strange enough but still works :( Any ideas what might be causing the laptop to reset in Windows 7 setup?

    Over the last few years, focus of BPM has been mainly to improve the businesses efficiency. To create more efficient processes, to remove bottlenecks, to automate processes. That still holds true and why not? Isn’t BPM all about continuous improvement? BPM facilitates and requires business and IT collaboration. But business also requires working with customer. Do we not want to get close to and collaborate with our customers? This is where Social BPM takes BPM a step further. It not only allows people within an organization to collaborate to design exceptional processes, not only lets them collaborate on resolving a case but also let them engage with the customers. Engaging with customer means, first of all, connecting with them on their terms and turf. Take a new account opening process. Can a customer call you and initiate the process? Can a customer email you, or go to the website and initiate the process? Can they tweet you and initiate the process? Can they check the status of process via any channel they like? Can they take a picture of damaged package delivery and kick-off a returns process from their mobile device, with GIS data? Yes, these are various aspects to consider during process design if the goal is better customer experience and engagement. Of course, we want to be efficient and agile, but the focus here needs to be the customer. Now when the customer is tweeting about your products, posting on Facebook and Yelp about their experience with your company (and your process), you need to seek out that information. You need to gather and analyze the customer’s feedback on the social media and use that information to improve the processes and products. This is an excellent source of product and process ideation. So BPM is no longer only about improving back-office process efficiency, it is moving into a new and exciting phase of improving frontline customer facing processes, customer experience and engagement.   • Oracle JDeveloper 11gR2 Cookbook book review

    I recently received a free copy of Oracle JDeveloper 11gR2 Cookbook published by Packt Publishing for review. Readers of technical cookbooks would know this genre of text includes problems that developers will hit and the prescribed solutions, in this case for Oracle's Application Development Framework (ADF).  Books like this excel themselves on excellent coverage, a logical progress of solutions through out the book, and providing a readable narrative around the numerous steps and code. This book progresses well through ADF application assembly, ADF Business Components, the view layer, security, deployment and tuning.  Each recipe had a clear introduction and I especially enjoyed the "There's more" follow up sections for some recipes that leads the reader onto related ideas and issues the reader really needs to be aware of. Also worthy of comment having worked with ADF for over 5 years, there certainly was recipes and solutions I hadn't encountered before, this book gets bonus points for that. As a reviewer what negatives can I give this text? The book has cast it's net too wide by trying to cover "everything from design and construction, to deployment, testing, debugging and optimization."  ADF is such a large and sophistication technology, this book with 100 recipes barely scrapes the surface.  Don't expect all your ADF problems to be solved here. In turn there is inconsistency in the level of problems and solutions.  I felt at the beginning the book was pitching itself at advanced problems to solve (that's great for me), but then it introduces topics like building a static View Object or train.  These topics in my opinion are fairly simple and are covered by the Oracle documentation just as well, they shouldn't have been included here.  In conclusion, ADF beginners will find this book worthwhile as it will open your eyes to the wider problems and solutions required for ADF, and experts for just the fact they can point junior programmers at the book for certain problems and say "get on with it". Is there scope for more ADF tombs like this?  Yes!  I'd love to see a cookbook specializing on ADF Business Components (hint hint to budding authors).

  • Microsoft Basic Office 2007 Activation Keys won't work after re-installing on my Laptop

    So, I've upgraded my hard-drive on my laptop, and proceeded to grab my trusty copper-faced Official MS Office disk to do an install. I have three licenses with the fancy green-blue paper that identifies the license keys. Problem is, that for each of these license keys, when the Office 2007 software asks that I enter the "Product Key" it states: The key is incorrect. Verify that you have the correct key, and then retype it Why would Microsoft want to inhibit/prohibit re-installs on the same machine that the software was initially installed to? Incidentally, the same goofy error happens with each of the three valid product key (activation keys) that I enter.

  • how can I discover what keys are being sent when I press a mouse button?

    I'd like to map my Logitech MX Revolution keys in Visual Studio. More importantly, I'd like to do it without installing any software. Is this possible? I specifically want to map the two side buttons to View.NavigateBackward and View.NavigateForward. But I'm not sure what those keys are mapped to right now. I thought they were mapped to Ctrl-Tab and Shift-Ctrl-Tab, since they seem to behave that way in Notepad++, but that isn't working in VS. I'm on the work computer, which means 2 problems: I'm in Windows XP and installing software is frowned upon/monitored.

    An interview with JavaOne Rock Star Martijn Verburg, by yours truly, titled “Challenging the Diabolical Developer: A Conversation with JavaOne Rock Star Martijn Verburg,” is now up on otn/java. Verburg, one of the leading movers and shakers in the Java community, is well known for his ‘diabolical developer” talks at JavaOne where he uncovers some of the worst practices that Java developers are prone to. He mentions a few in the interview: * “A lack of communication: Software development is far more a social activity than a technical one; most projects fail because of communication issues and social dynamics, not because of a bad technical decision. Sadly, many developers never learn this lesson.* No source control: Some developers simply store code in local file systems and e-mail the code in order to integrate their changes; yes, this still happens.* Design-driven design: Some developers are inclined to cram every design pattern from the Gang of Four (GoF) book into their projects. Of course, by that stage, they've actually forgotten why they're building the software in the first place.” He points to a couple of core assumptions and confusions that lead to trouble: “One is that developers think that the JVM is a magic box that will clean up their memory and make their code run fast, as well as make them cups of coffee. The JVM does help in a lot of cases, but bad code can and will still lead to terrible results! The other trend is to try to force Java (the language) to do something it's not very good at, such as rapid Web development. So you get a proliferation of overly complex frameworks, libraries, and techniques trying to get around the fact that Java is a monolithic, statically typed, compiled, OO environment.
