• Booting a virtual os on a physical environment

  Is there an application that allows you to add a virtualized version of your operating system into the mbr? By virtualized, I mean that if you boot this one, any changes made in it will not be committed to the disk. Just like how deepfreeze, returnil, and shadow user works. Is it possible to do that? Because the applications mentioned above requires you to reboot if you want that changes will not be retained.

• How do I automatically copy data when attaching external storage?

  If I am correct to assume that once I place a DVD/disk in my optical drive (or use a USB flash drive or external HDD for that matter; for arguments sake) that this action would in effect trigger an 'event' in Windows. I would like to use this 'triggered event' to enable an entire copy of that device. Example: if my optical H: reads a disk OR the user closes the tray OR ... then xcopy /S H: "F:\Copy of H"

• How does /burnmemory=XXX boot.ini switch work?

  I know what the /burnmemory switch does on Windows, but I'd like to understand what Windows is doing under the hood to support it. It's described on msdn as the "amount of memory, in megabytes, that Windows cannot use". Does this mean simply that the kernel does not allow user virtual memory mapping into this area? How is this accomplished in the kernel, and are there other restrictions that the kernel will make when burnmemory is set?

How do I reset the root password? (I have root access to the server)

• Using Dropbox as a cloud based file share - does everyone need an upgraded account?

  We have a file share in our small office (3-5 users). We now have the need for the files to be accessible outside of the office. I like the idea of dropbox - we have been using it for small remote sharing. If we buy the upgrade account, and move 30 to 70 gigs of files to it, will every user have to have the pro account?   I've been using Shadow User and Deep freeze for windows xp. But I don't think its compatible with windows 7. Do you know of any application that can achieve the same thing? Please don't tell me to use Returnil virtual system because I've had a really bad experience with it when I'm using xp. The system just restarted over and over. And I have just reformatted by that time.

• Smooth scrolling in Emacs/Windows

  As the subject title says, has anyone any suggestions for how to achieve smooth scrolling of the text display in emacs? The various approaches suggested on the Emacs wiki seem to work only in Linux. I'm using EmacsW32 for what it matters, but I tested with the standard Emacs distribution as well, with no results. As a long time Vim user, I'm fairly surprised that Emacs cannot scroll smoothly by itself.

• How do I disable animations in Preview in Lion?

  For example, open up a pdf and set view to two pages and hit arrow key up/down. Is there a way to get rid of the animation? Preview feels really snappy and fast, and to have animations like that just spoils all the fun. Might seem like a proper first world problem, especially if you're just a casual user of pdfs. But I frequently have 10+ pdfs open for referencing purposes (that is, a lot of flicking back and fourth), and the animation just drives me nuts.

• cygwin running commands with switches when ssh in

  When I SSH into a Windows 2008 R2 box and try to run a command with switches like /cygdrive/c/directory/Reports.exe /ReportID=1 /DateRange=LastWeek the command just hangs and never finishes. I can see the Reports.exe spawn a process under the user but never finishes. If I RDP into the box open cygwin terminal and run the exact command it works. Any reason why I can't run the command when I SSH in?

Is it possible to prevent modification (here: pausing) of a task through requiring the entering of the admin password to modify, EVEN THOUGH the currently-logged-in (and only) user is the admin account itself? Apparently the way that Akamai works (company that backs CloudFiles program) is that the mime-type is an image and will force the user to download it - I can still use the image within HTML tags like the <img src="//cdn.com/image.jpg"/> but copying it in the URL or clicking the image will always prompt the download I want to view that image within the browser - this happens with IE, Google Chrome and Firefox.

  We have a very specific use case for an application we're developing, where a user will be presented with a PDF document, which they can print off. However, we need to be able to restrict the PDF so it can only be printed off once. Does anyone know if there's a way to restrict the number of times a PDF can be printed.
