    Instead of typing this in a command prompt one at a time: wmic /node:ipaddress /user:administrator /password:mypassword bios get serialnumber How can I run that against one entire subnet and output to a text document? Since I do this every couple months to verify our inventory of computers, I would assume there would be a much of easier way I could put this in a batch script instead of doing it manually.

  • Xcopy batch file behavior

    I have the following backup batch file: xcopy C:\test.txt \server\Data\user\"data test" /e /y /i The issue is why does it not only copy the file listed but proceeds to copy the whole root directory? When i remove the switches it only copies the file. There is nothing in the description of those switches that seems to cause the behavior... They are there because I'm picking up where someone else left and all the batch files use these 3 switches. Thanks

Were commercial software an option things would be easy but I want freeware. After trying out several different candidates such as Core FTP Mini SFTP Server, SilverShield and freeFTPd none them really qualified - either connection issues, zero configurability or bugs. Is there a free and stable SFTP server for Windows 2008 which works out of the box?

  • Is pst file enough to backup my Outlook (Gmail)?

    I've backup from my Gmail account at Outlook 2010 beta. I see a pst file which is equal file size with my Gmail used storage. Is this file enough to protect my mails or do I need additional files or whatever? I'm not a regular outlook user. I've read this but I don't think I'm using "Signatures, Templates, Stationery etc."...

    I have problem to mount a compressed (ISZ) image under Linux, which was created by e.g. UltraISO? I am aware about user-space fuseiso, but it fails to mount these images, as I have reported in Debian bugtracker (correct me if I ddi something wrong). I ask the community for a help: I need a proved solution to mount these images without decompressing them. I believe that CONFIG_ZISOFS kernel option cannot help, as it refers a special RockRidge extension (per-file compression with mkisofs -z or mkzftree).

    I try command rsync -v --files-from=/path/to/list.lst /home/user /path/to/backup list.lst contains for example .gnupg/ .pki/ .gnome2/keyrings/ .mozilla/firefox/*.default/bookmarkbackups/ .mozilla/firefox/*.default/bookmarks.html .mozilla/firefox/.default/.db files .mozilla/firefox/.default/.sqlite and i get error on all strings with * "failed: No such file or directory". Can anybody help me, or as variant can i combine find `cat /path/to/list.lst` with rsync?

I'm looking for something akin to the boot log you would get in Linux (with what is running at what times, how long it is running, etc). I am specifically interested in the what is happening after I get out of initial boot phase (AKA, the Windows XP logo goes away and I move to the generic blue background, and as I log in as a user onto the machine).

  • Why won't my Windows 8 Command line update its path

    I needed to add a new entry to my PATH variable. This is a common activity for me in my job, but I've recently started using Windows 8. I assumed the process would be similar to Windows 7, Vista, XP... Here's my sequence of events: Open System properties (Start- [type "Control Panel"] - Control Panel\System and Security\System - Advanced system settings - Environment Variables) Add the new path to beginning of my USER PATH variable (C:\dev\Java\apache-ant-1.8.4\bin;) Opened a command prompt (Start - [type "command prompt" enter] - [type "path" enter] My new path entry is not available (see attached image and vide). I Duplicated the exact same process on a Windows 7 machine and it worked. EDIT Windows 8 Environment Variables and Command Prompt video EDIT This is definitely not the behavior of Windows 7. Watch this video to see the behavior I expect working in Windows 7. http://youtu.be/95JXY5X0fII EDIT 5/31/2013 So, after much frustration, I wrote a small C# app to test the WM_SETTINGCHANGE event. This code receives the event in both Windows 7 and Windows 8. However, in Windows 8 on my system, I do not get the correct path; but, I do in Windows 7. This could not be reproduced in other Windows 8 systems.     I'm constructing a backup script for Windows 7, and the last action I want it to perform is to safely "remove" the USB drive that it is backing up to. I am under the impression that plugging the drive into the SAME USB port all the time will keep the same DEV_ID, correct me if I'm wrong. With a Command Line (or PowerShell), how can I tell Windows to safely remove the hardware automatically without user input? Just as a place holder, other OSes that may have a way to do this would be great to know as well

    I'm writing an installer and need to change all users' wallpaper. I can do this from the group policy editor GUI, but need to do so from my installer. I can't just edit the registry as it gets reset by a GPO on login. How do I apply the relevant administrative template via programatically (preferably cmd.exe or via the registry)? (for interest, it's User Configuration Administrative Templates Desktop Desktop Desktop Wallpaper [sic] Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

  • Program to set time on local computer using GPS data

    I have a laptop running Windows XP that does not connect to the Internet and I would like to use a USB GPS receiver as a time source to set the clock. Generally, the laptop will not have access to the open sky so getting a strong, multi-satellite connection is not likely.   • How to change my IE start page back?

    In my registry, the entry "Start Page" under [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main] was changed to some bad url. And I found that i don't have permission to modify the [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main], only got a "everyone" user to access it.   • Can't see any entries on "File Types" tab on Windows 7's Desktop Search

    For some reason, Windows Desktop Search (included with Windows 7.0) now no longer shows any file types on the "Advanced Options" dialog box. Any ideas on how to fix this? WDS claims to be indexing...but I'm not sure what it's actually indexing right now. I should also add that when I try to add a file type, nothing shows up or is ever actually added. If I login as a different user on the same system, everything appears normally.

  • After returning from standby mode, win7 asks for login twice

    When a Windows 7 32-bit PC attached to a domain comes back from standby mode and has no user logged in, if I log in once, it jumps back to the login screen. If I log in for a second time, then it actually logs in. This happens on multiple PCs, and is not a hardware issue. The PCs are also free of viruses/malware, and are otherwise problem-free. Why does it do this, and is there a way to prevent this annoyance?

  • Is it a good idea to put "screen -r" in my .bashrc?

    I'd like to use screen to keep ssh sessions alive on my server. It would be nice if I could automatically resume any running session for my user when I log in. The straightforward way to do this would be adding "screen -r" to my .bashrc, and this seems to work fine. I'm just wondering if this will break anything under conditions which I haven't tested yet. Anyone with experience here who can tell me whether this is what I should do?
