• NoSQL DB for .Net document-based database (ECM)

  I'm halfway through coding a basic multi-tenant SaaS ECM solution. Each client has it's own instance of the database / datastore, but the .Net app is single instance. The documents are pretty much read only (i.e. an image archive of tiffs or PDFs) I've used MSSQL so far, but then started thinking this might be viable in a NoSQL DB (e.g. MongoDB, CouchDB). The basic premise is that it stores documents, each with their own particular indexes. Each tenant can have multiple document types. e.g. One tenant might have an invoice type, which has Customer ID, Invoice Number and Invoice Date. Another tenant might have an application form, which has Member Number, Application Number, Member Name, and Application Date. So far I've used the old method which Sharepoint (used?) to use, and created a document table which has int_field_1, int_field_2, date_field_1, date_field_2, etc. Then, I've got a "mapping" table which stores the customer specific index name, and the database field that will map to. I've avoided the key-value pair model in the DB due to volume of documents. This way, we can support multiple document types in the one table, and get reasonably high performance out of it, and allow for custom document type searches (i.e. user selects a document type, then they're presented with a list of search fields). However, a NoSQL DB might make this a lot simpler, as I don't need to worry about denormalizing the document. However, I've just got concerns about the rest of the data around a document. We store an "action history" against the document. This tracks views, whether someone emails the document from within the system, and other "future" functionality (e.g. faxing). We have control over the document load process, so we can manipulate the data however it needs to be to get it in the document store (e.g. assign unique IDs). Users will not be adding in their own documents, so we shouldn't need to worry about ACID compliance, as the documents are relatively static. So, my questions I guess : Is a NoSQL DB a good fit Is MongoDB the best for Asp.Net (I saw Raven and Velocity, but they're still kinda beta) Can I store a key for each document, and then store the action history in a MSSQL DB with this key? I don't need to do joins, it would be if a person clicks "View History" against a document. How would performance compare between the two (NoSQL DB vs denormalized "document" table) Volumes would be up to 200,000 new documents per month for a single tenant. My current scaling plan with the SQL DB involves moving the SQL DB into a cluster when certain thresholds are reached, and then reviewing partitioning and indexing structures.

• C question: Padding bits in unsigned integers and bitwise operations (C89)

  I have a lot of code that performs bitwise operations on unsigned integers. I wrote my code with the assumption that those operations were on integers of fixed width without any padding bits. For example an array of 32 bit unsigned integers of which all 32 bits available for each integer. I'm looking to make my code more portable and I'm focused on making sure I'm C89 compliant (in this case). One of the issues that I've come across is possible padded integers. Take this extreme example, taken from the GMP manual: However on Cray vector systems it may be noted that short and int are always stored in 8 bytes (and with sizeof indicating that) but use only 32 or 46 bits. The nails feature can account for this, by passing for instance 8*sizeof(int)-INT_BIT. I've also read about this type of padding in other places. I actually read of a post on SO last night (forgive me, I don't have the link and I'm going to cite something similar from memory) where if you have, say, a double with 60 usable bits the other 4 could be used for padding and those padding bits could serve some internal purpose so they cannot be modified. So let's say for example my code is compiled on a platform where an unsigned int type is sized at 4 bytes, each byte being 8 bits, however the most significant 2 bits are padding bits. Thanks guys EDIT 12/19/2010 5PM EST: Christoph has answered my question. Thanks! I had also asked (above) whether padding bits are always the most significant bits. This is cited in the rationale for the C99 standard, and the answer is no. I am playing it safe and assuming the same for C89. Here is specifically what the C99 rationale says for §6.2.6.2 (Representation of Integer Types): Padding bits are user-accessible in an unsigned integer type. For example, suppose a machine uses a pair of 16-bit shorts (each with its own sign bit) to make up a 32-bit int and the sign bit of the lower short is ignored when used in this 32-bit int. Then, as a 32-bit signed int, there is a padding bit (in the middle of the 32 bits) that is ignored in determining the value of the 32-bit signed int. But, if this 32-bit item is treated as a 32-bit unsigned int, then that padding bit is visible to the user’s program. The C committee was told that there is a machine that works this way, and that is one reason that padding bits were added to C99. Footnotes 44 and 45 mention that parity bits might be padding bits. The committee does not know of any machines with user-accessible parity bits within an integer. Therefore, the committee is not aware of any machines that treat parity bits as padding bits. • Using ed to manipulate files matched by find

  Following the bash-hackers wiki's recommendation, I want to edit files using ed. In particular I want to do the following with ed instead of sed: find . -type f -exec sed -i -e 's/a/b/g' {} \; I see that ed doesn't have opt like sed's -e, so as far as I know, pipes and io redirections are the only way to work with it non-interactively. So, using ed from a bash script to do the same as the above sed command would look like: ed file_name <<<$'g/a/s//b/g\nw' Or echo $'g/a/s//b/g\nw' | ed file_name But as far as I know it is impossible to involve pipes or io redirections within find's -exec. Do I miss something? or is the only way to overcome this is to use loops? for file in $(find . -type f -print); do ed $file <<<$'g/a/s//b/g\nw'; done;

  How can I find out which FORM an HTML element is contained within, using a simple/small bit of JavaScript? In the example below, if I have already got hold of the SPAN called 'message', how can I easily get to the FORM element? <form name="whatever"> <div> <span id="message"></span> </div> </form> The SPAN might be nested within other tables or DIVs, but it seems too long-winded to iterate around .parentElement and work my way up the tree. Is there a simpler and shorter way? If it wasn't a SPAN, but an INPUT element, would that be easier? Do they have a property which points back to the containing FORM? Google says no...

• Grails Liferay portlet not invoking action

  I am trying to create a simple portlet for Liferay 5.2.2 using Grails 1.2.1 with the grails-portlets 0.7 and grails-portlets-liferay 0.2 plugins. I created and deployed a stock portlet (just updated title, description, etc...). It deploys correctly and the view renders correctly. However, when I submit the default form that is in view.gsp it never hits the actionView function. I would've thought that should be an action request.

The question I have is, the variable headers is basically a long list.   My engine is Aspx. How can I decode/encode the html tags that is in my text box. I have the html tag to make it more readable. • File I/O OS handling

  This isn't a direct coding question but more of a OS handling mechanism. I was reading somebody's previous question regarding C# and file handling. Apparently C# was throwing an exception regarding a file being locked when trying to access this. So my question is, does C# use an internal lock to handle file I/O between processes, or does the OS use some type of mutual exclusion for file I/O? From what I learned about operating systems, well at least unix, is that the OS doesn't implement any type of mutual exclusion for processes trying to access the same file.

• iPhone development: Best method to allow user to chose search scope

  Hi, I'm developing my first iPhone app and want to allow the user to select the scope of their search in a more complex way than the 'scope buttons' permit. The app is related to wines and I want to the user to be able to select the 'color' (Red, White, Blush, etc.) first, and then select the type/varietal within that category. Right now, I'm using the UISearchBar's scope buttons for the colors and tapping the button opens a view with the selection of colors. This is okay except that once the 'Red' button has been selected, I can't select it a second time to change my choice of type (e.g., change from 'Merlot' to 'Syrrah', etc.) If there's a better way to do this, I'm willing to scrap my method and start from scratch. • How to benchmark apache/nginx setup

  I am planning to setup nginx as reverse proxy. I will have apache to deliver my dynamic content, and nginx will deliver the static content. My configuration i have now is just Apache with fastCGI. This gives me no configuration problems and runs great. After I have set up nginx I want to run some benchmarks to see if I really got some performance increases, else i will switch back. Does anyone know how I can benchmark this type of setup? Or maybe someone did this already and have some canned results, I will be glad to hear them. PS. I know this is more a serverfault type of question, but i have seen numerous posts about apache and nginx so i thought i give it a try

• offsetWidth or CSS expression problem for IE6

  I need to set the width of textboxes as 80% of it's parent. So first I used td input[type="text"] { width: 80%; } But it was not rendering properly if the input is the child of td. So, I used Css expressions td input[type="text"] { width: expression(this.parentNode.offsetWidth*0.8); } It is working as I wanted in every browser except IE 6. Can anybody help me, where I am going wrong? I know that expressions are allowed in IE 6. So, is it the problem of using css expression or something to do offsetWidth. Thanks in advance.

• Displaying a message in a dialog box using AJAX, jQuery, and CakePHP

  I have a form, and when users submit this form, it should pass the data along to a function using AJAX. Then, the result of that is displayed to the user in a dialog box. I'm using CakePHP (1.3) and jQuery to try and accomplish this but I feel like I'm running into the ground. The form will eventually be used for uploading images with tags, but for now I just want to see a message pop up in the box..   Hello, is this a valid JQuery usage pattern to : <script type="text/javascript"> $("body").prepend('<input type="hidden" id="error" value="show">'); </script> That is using Jquery to manipulate / insert HTML Tags when the Document has NOT YET been loaded (by not using document.ready for the inserting into the DOM)? (Normally I only use document.ready, but in this case I need to insert some Information into the DOM that then is present, when document.ready is called. This is some kind of "happens-before" relations ship I want to achieve so that I am shure when document.ready is called the inserted Form field is available in the document, as I depend on that information.   I'm busy using Google Charts in one of my projects to display data in a table. Everything is working great. Except that I need to see what line a user selected once they click a button. This would obviously be done with Javascript, but I've been struggling for days now to no avail.
