• Terminal Server Logging Software

  I have recently been trying to find software to monitor users' activities on our terminal server. After a quick search, I found http://www.softactivity.com/tsm.aspx. Has anyone ever heard of or used this program? I just want to make sure this company is legit and the software runs efficiently. The server I would be installing it on has about 40-50 users on it. I am hoping the software has some type of setting to only monitor certain users, because i would hate to waste resources. If this is not good software, does anyone have any recommendations?

• How do you prefer to handle image spriting in your web projects?

  It seems like these days it is pretty much mandatory for web applications to sprite images if they want many images on their site AND a fast load time. (Spriting is the process of combining all images referenced from a style sheet into one/few image(s) with each reference containing a different background position.) I was wondering what method of implementing sprites you all prefer in your web applications, given that we are referring to non-dynamic images which are included/designed by the programming team and not images which are dynamically uploaded by a third party. 1. Add new images to an existing sprite by hand, create new css reference by hand. 2. Generate a sprite server-side from your css files which all reference single images set to be background images of an html element that is the same size of the image you are spriting once per build and update all css references programmatically. 3. Use a sprite generating program to generate a sprite image for you once per release and hand insert the new css class / image into your project. 4. Other methods? I prefer two as it requires very little hand-coding and image editing.

• Java sound doesn't work under Linux

  Help! I'm getting frustrated by the individual hoops I have to go through to eek sound out of my speakers when running Java apps on Linux platforms! I just installed Fedora 12 and after downloading and running the Java Sound Demo I get exceptions. If I run just a vanilla Java program that plays a wav file it runs silently with no sound and no exceptions. Every other app seems to play sound. I also took some advice from this thread in the Ubuntu forums which almost seemed to work. (Installing aoss got rid of the initial exceptions in the sound demo but I still hear nothing when I play.) can somebody help me figure out what's wrong?

• SQL Server 2008 data directiories in SSD

  I am going to install a new SQL server 2008 instance on my development/testing machine. My machine have one 7200rpm 500GB SATA Disk (C:OS) and one Intel X25-G2 80GB SSD(D:). Details machine config is as follow: CPU:i7 860 RAM:8GB Microsoft said I have an option to place following directories in different disk. So I plan to place User database & Temp DB on SSD and rest of it on traditional disk. Is it a good choice for gaining a performance boost in fast SSD? Data root directory :C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server User database directory D:\Data User log directory C:\Logs Temp DB directory D:\TempDB Temp Log directory C:\TempDB Backup directory C:\Backups

• Resizing/reprocessing videofiles to adjust total size being <= 4.7gb

  How could I resize or reprocess bunch of videofiles (tv show series) to be able write it on DVD? Total size of all files should be less or equal to the max size of dvd - 4.7G. Is there any kind of program which allows conversion with total filesize adjustement up to defined limit? Is there way to be sure quality will not suffer noticeably after video files adjustments? Maybe there is a software which allows adjusting quality and creating DVD video disk with nifty menu automatically? Any help is appreciated. Thanks!

• Server 2008 blue screen after login - no desktop

  I came into work today to find that our Windows Server 2008 used as a terminal server for the Thin Clients was not loading the users desktops. What I have found out is that when I login via Remote Desktop, after applying user settings, it gets to the stage of 'Preaparing your desktop', but then the screen just goes blue. I have tried rebooting several times with no luck, and logging in locally at the server with no luck. Does anyone have any suggestions? I do not think that it could be a virus attack as we run antivirus on the server with OpenDNS filtering. Yesterday a software restriction policy was set up to only allow programs in the following directories to run if that could be the problem, although it was working fine all day yesterday. • How can I set a Windows user environment variable that takes effect for the current session?

  I am trying to set a Windows user environment variable and then launch an application via either batch file or a script. However, the environment variable is not set to the appropriate value until after the user logs off and logs back on. (I think a more accurate description would be that the new value is not available to the app until after the next logon.) Is there any way to set a variable in the user's environment so that it's immediately available? I'm doing this because this program's functionality can be controlled by environment variables, and users will need different functionality at different times. Because of license constraints I need to set this dynamically, if possible. Thanks, Graham

• python: os.system does not execute shell comand

  I need to execute shell command in python program (I have ubuntu). More specifically I want to create graph using graphviz in python script. My code is os.system("dot -Tpng graph.dot -o graph.png") It does not work, but if I just type dot -Tpng graph.dot -o graph.png in command line then everything is fine. Do you know what the problem?   Ever since watching a .MOV file with Windows Media Player on my pc, I am sporadically getting the below error. Does anyone know the cause of this, or a good way to fix it? • Using group policy preferences to push a file to C:\Windows on a restricted user.

  We have a really old Video learning program that we need to run from the network for our students. However it uses Director Player 6.0 and the students get the error: "Unable to copy the driver file C:\Windows\xobglu16.dll to your Windows directory. Your disk may be full" Now the solution I've read is to copy the files manually to each machine and mark them read-only. I'm trying to do this via GPP, but the Event log is showing an Access is denied error. I believe it is because the student accounts do not have permission to c:\windows. Any ideas on a work around without using a script?

• How to Export Flash Animation Data

  I'd love for my partner, the artist, to be able to animate using flash movieclips and timelines. Then I, the programmer, would like to read the raw Flash info and re-program it into my engine of choice (which happens to be Torque2D). The data I'd want is the bitmap images that were used in Flash, like the head and body the links between the images, like where the head connects to the body the motion data from the flash animation, like move, rotate (at what speed), shear, etc. for the head or arms or whatever. Is there any way to get this data? Here's what I know so far. There are tools like SWFSheet and Spriteloq that convert the entire flash animation into a frame by frame sprite animation (in a sprite sheet). This would take too much space in my case, so I'd like to avoid that. Re-animating on the fly would take much less texture memory. There is a PDF that describes the SWF file format but NOT the individual components like the movieclips. So anyone know of a library I can use, or how I can learn more about the movieclip components and whatnot? (more better tags: transform, export, convert)

• How to keep word document, html and pdf documentation aligned

  Is there a way to write documentation in a WYSIWYG editor which can then export into HTML, WORD and PDF and keep copies synchronized? This documentation are mostly technical notes and some contextual help for some softwares so they must contain images and some styling, they are not programmer's documentation (API list or functions list) for which probably a program like Javadoc or Doxygen would be the best choice. For example how do companies with hundreds different software lines and thousands of programmers deal with this? I have several solutions but they all seem lacking in some aspect: Latex/Tex : very good pdf and html export, not very user friendly and no full-blown WYSIWYG editor available. LibreOffice/OpenOffice : full blown WYSIWYG editor however html export not so good (need to edit manually exported html which needs to be maintained separately ) Mediawiki or any other wiki : could be keeping documentation in wikitext format, so html is automatically generated, pdf exportation is quite good with many available plugins. Again however need some formation for the staff to use it and need to setup a server for this. Notice I'm not asking for software A vs software B, I'm asking for general advice, big companies procedures for documentation and yes some software product names if available.

  At the moment I am running a Windows Terminal Server 2008 for around 10 clients that use the server to run programs and access data. Is there anyway to separate the resources of each user so that they do not impact each other in terms of resources. User 1: Opens program User 2: Notices slow down I have looked into using Windows System Resource Manager but do not know if it provides what I need and if there are any other 3rd party tools that also provide this functionality. • How to detect a change in a background window

  Hi, Let's say I have a chat window open in a web browser, and I'm waiting for a message from my partner, trying to do something else in the meantime. The chat window (not an installed program) will not alert me of an incoming message, nor will the task bar flash or anything. Is there any utility that can help me? In search of a solution, I came across AutoHotKey. There is a script called livewindows.ahk, which will show a piece of the window anywhere on the screen, but it won't alert me on a change. I'm not skilled enough to know how to store and compare e.g. every second's content of some window area. Maybe someone has invented this wheel? Thanks in advance for any hint or advice. Leonardo

• Career paths after web development?

  I know this is open ended, but I'm just curious what you've done after your web development career, or if you've stayed loyal. I have a feeling/read/heard that web development salaries top out at a certain amount.. even after 10-15 years of experience. Reason I ask is that I graduated last summer with a BS in Chemical Engineering.. but have not been able to find a job in California. I've been web designing/developing since high school and thought that I should start a career, even if its not related to my major and not lose more time. Even though I'd really like to have an engineering career, I don't think that will happen. Do you guys have any suggestions or experiences for choices after/ways to enhance your career after several years in web development? Thanks! Update: Thanks for the responses guys! One more question: Is it likely to be accepted into a MS/PhD program if you've been out of uni for a couple years? Or with semi-related job experience?   I am running a Linux server from 2000, I have Fedora12 installed as the OS. I know you can virtualize Windows XP on the system to be able to run Windows programs, but the problem is I My server has only one 1333Mhz Pentium 3 processor and 1G of Ram. granted this is a pretty kick ass computer for the day, but lacking the second processor I'm afraid that I will not be able to run Windows virtualization to support Photoshop CS3. Is there any program out there that runs similar to Photoshop, like windows Digital Image suite 10, that will run smoothly in my Linux Fedora 12 environment? or can I virtualize windows and run the Windows digital image suite 10, without slowing or corrupting my system?

• VMware Workstation 7.x error loading operating system help

  Hey all i am using the windows verison of VMware Workstation 7.x and I am getting this error when i start my VM error loading operating system That only started to happen when i tried to load that vmdk file into the program VirtualBox. Prior to this it ran just fine. Ever since then i have been unable to start it in VMware Workstation 7.x... I've already tried to repair the vmdk file but when i do it tells me there are no errors found? I used vmware-vdiskmanager.exe -R "c:\blah\my vm disk.vmdk" Anyone else have any more suggestions i could try? It's a 300+GB VM so i really don't want to lose it!!! Thanks, David

• Heap corruption error after language pack installation for Visual Studio 2012

  I have installed the german version of Visual Studio 2012 Premium on my german windows machine and installed the english language pack vor Visual Studio 2012 Premium and it works great but after I installed the german language pack I get the heap corruption error 0xc0000374. The faulty module is ntdll.dll, version: 6.3.9600.16408 Only restoring Windows resolves this issue. Edit: This error also occurs when changing the displayed language and I was able to observe this behavior only after updating from Windows 8 to Windows 8.1 and updating from DevExpress 12.1 to DevExpress 13.1. Not only that, but the error does not occure immediately after installing a language, sometimes I can start debugging my program as usual and then after three to five times or so, the error occurs. Is there another solution than restoring Windows?

• Go frame-by-frame through a movie with a precise timer

  Hello, world: I have a video I made for physics class, which I intend to use to measure just how long an event took to take place. I can find the start frame and end frame easily using VLC's frame-by-frame feature. However, VLC's timer seems only to be precise to a single second, giving me no more precise an answer than "5 seconds." Is there a way in VLC, or any other program, to identify at precisely what time a particular frame in a video takes place? I have easy access to Ubuntu and Windows, and acquire a Mac if need be. If precise timer is not available, what number frame I am on will also work, since I know the framerate.
