• SunSpace - a sentimental moment

  I just came back from California where I had a little sentimental moment.With the great help from some former Sun colleagues we move the old SunSpace gear into a new data center in Santa Clara.We will re-purpose the hardware as a new development infrastructure to build integrated demos around Oracle WebCenter products, Business Applications and Social Services. now - I could not resist to restart the SunSpace applications and see if it still works. And hey - even though we had to re-IP the entire  stack (sun.com domain is gone) and with some little hacking (thanks to Apache reverse proxy) -  we got it back! Hey Max - now I just need to change your SSO hack to get login working again Hmm - I won't - but it is really nice to see it working again .. and it's time to switch it off and to work  on the next cool things .. Do you know Oracle WebCenter Sites (formely Fatwire)? Its Oracle's Web Experience Management Solution - a pretty cool technology and a very slick User Interface. I specially like the drag&drop functionality which allows non technical users to easily publish content.  Why do I mention it here ?  Because we will use the SunSpace gear to build cool  Oracle WebCenter Sites demos and proof of concepts integration  into Business Applications and Social Services  This is a sneak preview what we are working on. To keep things running as seamlessly and smoothly as possible, constantly evaluate priorities, mitigate risk, and be ready for whatever might happen -- because things do happen when there are 50,000 plus attendees, tens of thousands of devices, unexpected requirements, and a constant flow of up-to-the-minute information. And here's the kicker: the team has only 4 days to bring get it all up and running across these many venues, and exactly 12 hours to take it all down once the show ends. The Global IT team puts in the equivalent of 152 24-hour days for set-up, 227 24-hour days of support during the conferences, and then tears it all down in about 20 24-hour days. And in case you were wondering, the planning for next year's Oracle OpenWorld starts ... next week. No rest for the weary.  Now THAT's networking!  So hats off to the Global IT team -- the job ain't easy, but somebody's got to do it, and they do it remarkably well.

• Lubuntu 13.04, kernel still 3.8.0-32-generic

  My question is very similar to Ubuntu 13.10, kernel still 3.8.0-31-generic. Recently was updating to Saucy and the ethernet cable got unplugged. So I decided to run Software Update again, to reinstall files. It returned that "everything is up to date". But according to these command-line searches, that is incorrect. How can I install Saucy now safely from the command line? sudo apt-get install lubuntu-desktop Reading package lists... Done Building dependency tree Reading state information... • Installed geany has no options

  I'm new to geany IDE. I installed geany from ubuntu software centre, and the window has no options other than opening a new file. I can't file any preference, tools option too for configuring. I heard it is a full fledged IDE. Also, from the screenshots available from the software center, it seems my Geany installation is missing almost everything. I'm not able to post the screenshots, but my interface just has 3 buttons. create a new file, open an existing file and a quit button. Everything else is inactive. I accidentally closed the sidepane, and I can't find any options to bring back that too. EDIT What am I missing in my Geany installation? PS: I tried installing from source from geany website. But, it posted some error saying GTK files not found. But, I removed geany from software centre and reinstalled several times. It installed Geany without problems, but with afore mentioned problems, that is I have nothing in my interface. Also, even after reinstalling, somehow Geany remembers to hide the sidepane by default, which I'm not able to see at all. I also added Geany ppa repository manually for latest fixes, but still when I reinstall from software centre I get a plain blank Geany interface. Thanks.

• No WIFI on Ubuntu 12.04 LTS after today software update

  I just got new dell inspiron3537 with Ubuntu 12.04 LTS (no windows O/S). It got some wireless (hard block) yesterday. So, this morning, I ran the software update all the security update. After that I can't see "Wireless" in system setting. So, I updated all the software update and looked thru several web site and found "sudo lshw -c network" command. • The very beggining research for web developing

  It is a general question to ask what would be the easiest way to start a website, however every one need a little boost up at the begging. There are content management systems, or admin panels, or some people have developed their own systems and many more diffirent things people use at the very beggining. Among others my way was looking for a very lightweight cms and develop a system on to it, unfortunately I couldn't find a good system to develop on, for example I decided to develop on snewscms (the lightest weight cms) but it is really hard to manage since it is not developed with object oriented programming standarts and I thought it would be a mistake to continue developing on to such a system. On the other hand starting to code from the core would be weak about security, and using a massive cms like joomla or drupal will not be good since there will be many things that are unused and moreover I will not feel well when I don't know what I am controlling since it is not easy to know every part of them. What I am asking is what would you do if you had lost all the files you are currently using today, where would you start from? What tool would you use? Or is there a lightweight and well coded tool to get start with?

• Data structure for grid with negative indeces

  Sorry if this is an insultingly obvious concept, but it's something I haven't done before and I've been unable to find any material discussing the best way to approach it. I'm wondering what's the best data structure for holding a 2D grid of unknown size. The grid has integer coordinates (x,y), and will have negative indices in both directions. So, what is the best way to hold this grid? I'm programming in c# currently, so I can't have negative array indices. My initial thought was to have class with 4 separate arrays for (+x,+y),(+x,-y),(-x,+y), and (-x,-y). This seems to be a valid way to implement the grid, but it does seem like I'm over-engineering the solution, and array resizing will be a headache. Another idea was to keep track of the center-point of the array and set that as the topological (0,0), however I would have the issue of having to do a shift to every element of the grid when repeatedly adding to the top-left of the grid, which would be similar to grid resizing though in all likelihood more frequent. Thoughts?

• How do I fix the Dash search not being able to find "additional drivers" nor "update"?

  I am a fairly new user of Ubuntu, and currently have two 12.04 installations, one of which seems to work ok but I have two problems. The problem I'm asking about in this question, is that the Dash search seems unable to find things, such as "additional drivers" or "update". On my working machine, searching for "additional drivers" there finds an icon for the driver program, but on the problem machine, it gives "Sorry, there is nothing that matches your search." Dash also only shows sections for Recent Files, and Downloads, on that machine. The account I'm running is an admin account. This installation also has a stuck Ubuntu Software Center (it loads and hangs) as in threads like this one. I don't think I've done very much to this computer that could cause a problem. I installed g++ and Wt to do some programming. The biggest change I can remember is uninstalling the newfangled scrollbars with "sudo apt-get remove liboverlay-scrollbar3-0.2-0", but re-installing that module seems to have no effect on these issues. Anyone have any ideas? Both machines have been updated with all recommended updates and say they are up to date.

• Why most people change from being a contractor to full time at my companies, but not the other way around?

  I have seen most people changed from being a contractor to being a full time employee, but not the other way around. And that happened in startups that had maybe 20% chance of IPO or being acquired, and another that had maybe a 50% chance. As far as I know, the rate (even for a 3 year experience graphics designer, or a programmer), can be $75 to $80 an hour. While a programmer with 15 years of experience may get $120,000 per year. So, the programmer with 15 years of programming experience earns $10,000 per month. At the same time, the programmer with 3 year of experience or the graphics designer will get $14,000 per month ($80 x 22 days x 8 hours). I know I have to buy my own insurance, but I can't imagine buying those for $4,000 each month... maybe $200, $300 at most. I probably need to pay Social Security (FICA) both way (myself and as self-employed = $210 x 2), but still, each month there will be extra $3,000 of income. So is the above calculation correct? But most often, I do see contractors wanting or becoming full time, but not full time employees becoming a contractor. Does somebody know what the reason is?

  Has anyone been able to communicate using WCF on Windows Phone Series 7 emulator? I've been trying for the past two days and it's just happening for me. I can get a normal Silverlight control to work in both Silverlight 3 and Silverlight 4, but not the phone version. • IE8 losing session cookies in popup windows.

  We have an ASP.NET application that uses Forms Auth. When users log in, a session ID cookie and a Forms Auth ticket (stored as a cookie) are generated. These are session cookies, not permanent cookies. It is intentional and desirable that when the browser closes, the user is effectively logged out. Once a user logs in, a new window is popped up using window.open('location here');. The page that is opened is effectively the workspace the user works in throughout the rest of their session. From this page, other pop-ups are also used. Lately, we've had a number of customers (all using latest versions of IE8) complaining that the when they log in, the initial pop-up takes them back to the log in screen rather than their homepage. Alternately, users can sometimes log in, get to the homepage (which again, is in a new pop up window), and it all seems fine, until any additional pop-ups are created, where it starts redirecting them to the log in screen again. In attempting to troubleshoot the issue, I've used good old Fiddler. When the problem starts manifesting, I've noticed that the browser is not sending up the ASP.NET session ID session cookie OR the Forms Auth ticket session cookie, even though the response to the log in POST clearly pushes down those cookies. What's more strange is if I CTRL+N to open a new window from the popped-up window that is missing the session cookies, then manually type in the URL to the home page, those cookies magically appear again. However, subsequent window.open(); calls will continue to be broken, not sending the session cookies and taking the user to the log in screen. It's important to note that sometimes, for seemingly no good reason, those same users can suddenly log in and work normally for a while, then it goes back to broken. Now, I've ensured that there are no browser add-ons, plug-ins, toolbars, etc. are running. I've added our site as a trusted site and dropped the security settings to Low, I've modified the Cookie Privacy policy to "accept all" and even disabled automatic policy settings, manually forcing it to accept everything and include session cookies. Nothing appears to affect it. Also note the web application resides on a single server. There is no load balancing, web gardens, server farms, clusters, etc. The server does reside behind an ISA server, but other than that it's pretty straight forward. I've been searching around for days and haven't found anything actionable. Heck, sometimes I can't even reproduce it reliably. I have found a few references to people having this same problem, but they seem to be referencing an issue that was allegedly fixed in a beta or RC release (example: http://stackoverflow.com/questions/179260/ie8-loses-cookies-when-opening-a-new-window-after-a-redirect). These are release versions of IE, with up-to-date patches. I'm aware that I can try to set permanent cookies instead of session cookies. However, this has drastic security implications for our application. Update It seems that the problem automagically goes away when the user is added as a Local Administrator on the machine. Only time will tell if this change permanently (and positively) affects this problem. Time to bust out ProcMon and see if there is a resource access problem.

  Hi guys. I've created just a test WCF service in which I need to call an external DLL. Everything works fine under Visutal Studio development server. However, when I try to use my service on IIS I am getting this error: Exception: System.AccessViolationException Message: Attempted to read or write protected memory. This is often an indication that other memory is corrupt. The stack trace leeds to the call of DLL which is presented below. After a lot of reading and experimenting I am almost sure that the error is caused by wrong passing strings to the called function. • Stumped by "The remote server returned an error: (403) Forbidden" with WCF Service in https

  I have a WCF Service that I have boiled down to next to nothing because of this error. It is driving me up the wall. Here's what I have now. A very simple WCF service with one method that returns a string with the value, "test". A very simple Web app that uses the service and puts the value of the string into a label. A web server running IIS 6 on Win 2003 with a SSL certificate. Other WCF services on the same server that work. I publish the WCF service to it's https location I run the web app in debug mode in VS and it works perfectly. I publish the web app to it's https location on the same server the WCF service resides under the same SSL certificate I get, "The remote server returned an error: (403) Forbidden" I have changed almost every setting in IIS as well as the WCF and Web apps to no avail. I have compared setting in the WCF services that work and everything is the same. Below are the setting in the web.config for the WCF Service and the WEB app: It appears the problem has to do with the Web app but I am out of ideas. • MVC 2 with IIS 6 Problems

  Hey guys, I'm using IIS 6 on a Windows 2003 Server and I am trying to get an MVC2 project installed on that machine. I am having nightmare-ish problems doing so! I've looked up TONS of references on what to do, and not 1 single one works. (They work for MVC1 projects, as I have a few of those running already using said solutions). Does anyone have any tips/hints/ideas on what needs to be done for MVC2 projects with IIS 6? I am definitely pulling my hair out over this. I have tried it on 2 of my dev servers, and both get the same result. The closest I can get to a served page is an error page "Object reference not set to an instance of an object", however, the page has try/catch blocks that are being ignored, so I dont think its running the code on the controller, I think it's saying that the controller is the error. (For the reference, the error in question is directed at the HomeController.cs file).
