  • Core i5 Turboboost/C states Freezing computer

    I'm not sure which, but I just had a heck of a time getting my computer to boot up and not freeze. It would run until it finished booting windows, then everything would freeze. This happened until I turned off turboboost and all the c states on the processor. What could be causing this? Is the processor going bad?

    I'm looking for a tool which would be able to capture a screen region, pass it to OCR and put the result into clipboard. "import ppm:- | gocr -i - | xclip -selection c" works, but gocr is unreliable: simple text on a webpage has errors. It is a clear font but the OCR tool always misses "r" and replaces it with underscore. "import ppm:- | ocrad -i - | xclip -selection c" says "ocrad: maxval 255 in ppm "P6" file." tesseract needs an image file and does not accept piping input to it. xfce4-screenshooter does not do OCR. ABBYY Screenshot Reader is proprietary. tessnet2 is freeware running on a proprietary platform. Google Docs can OCR screenshots in a batch. But my data is confidential and better not put online.   • When tab groups are loaded, Firefox becomes unresponsible for minutes (Unresponsive script)

    I have several tab groups (~ 20) in Firefox. I can start the browser without any problems. However, as soon as I … click at the "Group tabs" icon in the toolbar, or right-click on a tab and hover over "Move to tab group", … Firefox becomes unresponsible/freezes for a rather long time (more than 2 minutes). It seems to load all tab groups (it doesn't load all the pages! I deactivated this in the settings). While this is happening, I get several "Unresponsive script" warnings, like: Script: chrome://global/content/bindings/tabbox.xml:0 (most of the time) Script: chrome://global/content/bindings/tabbox.xml:418 Script: chrome://browser/content/tabview.js:400 Script: chrome://browser/content/tabview.js:522 Script: resource://modules/sessionstore/SessionStore.jsm:3578 Script: resource:///components/PageThumbsProtocol.js:79 (rare) Script: resource://gre/modules/XPCOMUtils.jsm:323 (rare) (probably also other warnings, didn't record them yet, though) On all of these I click "Continue". After ~ 2-3 minutes and 3-5 warnings, I can use Firefox again. Now I can switch tab groups without any problems. Why is this happening? How can I prevent the long loading time? Is there maybe a about:config setting I could try? I started Firefox in Safe Mode (= without any add-ons): the problem still exists.

    How bad is it to use Location Manager to retrieve the location information when MapView.showUserLocation is also TRUE? I have a situation where i want to show the blue dot to indicate the user's current location, and i want to record the user's current location after some time interval. Having said that, there may be situations where the user's current location is now being shown, but i still want to get the user's current location. I think i'll have to use the Location Manager in my controller class, but setting showUserLocation = YES would mean that i'll be draining more battery since two Location Managers are working at the same time? Is this assumption correct?

  • Wifi not working after a few minutes

    I'm using a few MacBooks and iPads connected to a router via WiFi. The problem is that a few minutes after they connect via WiFi the connection stops working. This happens on all devices. I went into the router settings by connecting via cable and everything seems in order. Connecting a laptop via cable to the router I can use internet as normal, the problem is only with WiFi. What can be the problem here? What I would like to do is run the drives in a RAID-0 configuration to improve performance (plus get the extra capacity on one partition). I would like Windows installed onto the striped volume (RAID 0). I have spent some time using diskpart to create a striped volume across the two drives, however when I go to install windows and select the volume it will not let me select 'Next' giving the error "Windows cannot be installed to this hard disk space. The partition contains one or more dynamic volumes that are not supported for installation." I'm hoping theres a step that I am missing that will allow me to install windows on a striped volume. Any ideas?

    Some experiment I did with hard drive read/write speed was 10MB/s write and 40MB/s read, and with a USB Flash drive, it can be 5MB/s write and 10MB/s read. Also, if I put a virtual hard drive .vhd file in a hard drive or in a USB Flash drive and try a Virtual Machine using it, the one using the hard drive is quite fast, while the one using the USB Flash drive is close to not usable. So I wonder some early netbooks use 4GB or 8GB flash memory as the hard drive, and even the Apple Mac Air has an option of using flash memory instead of a hard drive. But in those situation, will the speed be slower than using a hard drive, like in the case of a USB Flash drive?

  • Cannot access Ubuntu 10/04 after reinstalling Windows

    I had Windows Vista Home Premium on HP pavilion desktop. I partitioned the disk for Ubuntu and a swap disk partition and then I installed Ubuntu 10.04. When I would start my computer, I would be given a choice to start Windows or Ubuntu. Today I reinstalled Windows, and now the menu has disappeared. I don't see in windows the disk partition that I allocated to Ubuntu, so it means Ubuntu still exist but I can't load it. What can I do ?

    When my Windows 7 laptop is in its dock and connected to the IOGEAR GCS632U KVM switch the screensaver will not start. If connected directly to the mouse and keyboard while in the dock the screensaver starts normally. The screensaver also works when out of the dock. I need the screensaver to work when connected to the KVM. What's causing the screensaver not to start? Suggestions on how to remedy the problem?

    BIOS issue on HP dv9233cl laptop, wiped drive of Vista, loaded XP, not all the drives loaded. Went to the HP website, downloaded all drivers for this laptop. Started loading them. Loaded WIN Flash HP Network System BIOS Window SP42187. After a minute a low resolution screen appeared stating "It is now safe to turn off the computer" I waited a minute and half. Turned it off. Let it set 10 seconds try to start and No screen images at all and a nasty loud long beep 2 short beeps, 2 seconds of silence and it happens over & over again. I have unplugged/removed battery, still same problem, Any sugg.... Thx.. Paul

  • OSX esc key stops working (randomly)

    I have a 2011 macbook Air with OS X Mountain Lion (I've upgraded from Lion). And ever since upgrading my escape key randomly stops working. And it's not that the keyboard on the laptop would be damaged as the same happens if I use apple's bluetooth keyboard. So I'm guessing it's a software issue. Also in some cases pressing ctrl+esc achieves the same thing as just esc so I'm 100% it's not a hardware problem. Does anybody have any idea what this might be all about and how to fix it? edit: the escape key stops working completely but it starts working again after I restart the computer. edit2: this usually happens after the computer wakes from sleep. So it's not like that is just stopps working in the middle of using it, but rather after I put it to sleep (or just close the lid) and then open it again. Has nobody got the same issue? Is there a better place to ask OSX related questions than SuperUser maybe?

    Hi all, I'm looking to replace my hard disk, which is a Seagate Barracuda 7200.11 ST3500320AS 500GB. My friend told me to get a SATA HDD, not a SATA-II. What is the difference between the two? And is my old HDD a SATA or SATA-II? The new HDD I'm looking at is a Seagate 7200.12 ST3500418AS, which the store assistant told me is a SATA-II. However, the Seagate website labels both as SATA only. I'm afraid that I'll buy a HDD which is incompatible with my system, especially since I'm going to install Windows 7 on it and I previously had the problem of Windows (Vista) setup not recognizing my hard drive.     After about 15 minutes, a Norton Ghost 14 backup fails with Error EBAB03F1: The specified network name is no longer available. The source computer is a P4 laptop running Windows XP SP3. The target computer is a Core2 Quad desktop running Windows Vista Ultimate 64bit. It does not help to disable Norton 360 on the source computer or Norton Antivirus 2008 on the target computer. The Event Viewer consistently shows the same two VSS-related errors after Norton Ghost starts but before it fails. It makes no difference if the VSS service is started or stopped. The VSS errors do not appear elsewhere in the event log, only after Ghost starts. The MSS event messages, however, are quite common, appearing throughout the log, and they may have nothing to do with the problem.   • Fixing windows MBR without Vista Recovery CD

    I had Windows Vista + Ubuntu running on my system. I deleted the ubuntu partitions from Windows. However, when I start the system, GRUB throws up an Error 22 (missing partition) and does not let me boot into Windows. The CD ROM on my laptop is fried and therefore I tried installing Ubuntu again using a USB install. However, the version Ubuntu 9.10 justs hangs in the load screen and does nothing. I do not have windows Vista Recovery CD (as it was a recovery partition in my laptop). What are the options I have? How do I fix this?

  • How does Microsoft Word And Excel Run without any installation?

    I was having a discussion on bookmarks in Word with a friend, and he suggested me to check out his implementation of a query in Word. Since I did not have Microsoft Word installed, I told him I don't have Word so I won't be able to test it. To this, he mentioned that he'll send the executables and it will work - I argued that without an installation this will fail. I was rather shocked when he sent me the standalone executables and on running them, Word actually launched and I was able to use almost every functionality o_0 How's this possible? I've never installed Microsoft Office on my system, this isn't any "portable" app or VMWare ThinStall ( thanks nhinkle, didn't know about this). There are absolutely no Microsoft Office related files - except for winword.exe and excel.exe. Curiously even Microsoft Excel works fine with just the standalone executable. winword.exe size is about 38 MB, and excel.exe size is just 35kb, which makes it even more strange.
