• Effective Method to Manage and Search Through 100,000+ Objects Instantly? (C#)

  I'm writing a media player for enthusiasts with large collections (over 100,000 tracks) and one of my main goals is speed in search. I would like to allow the user to perform a Google-esque search of their entire music collection based on these factors: Song Path and File Name Items in ID3 Tag (Title, Artist, Album, etc.) Lyrics What is the best way for me to store this data and search through it? Currently I am storing each track in an object and iterating over an array of these objects checking each of their variables for string matches based on given search text. I've run into problems though where my search is not effective because it is always a phrase search and I'm not sure how to make it more fuzzy. Would an internal DB like SQLlite be faster than this? Any ideas on how I should structure this system? I also need playlist persistence, so that when they close the app and open the app their same playlist loads immediately. How should I store the playlist information so it can load quickly when the application starts? Currently I am JSON encoding the entire playlist, storing it in a text file, and reading it into the ListView at runtime, but it is getting sluggish over 20,000 tracks. Thanks!

  Hi, I'm spending some time on assembly programming (Gas, in particular) and recently I learned about the align directive. I think I've understood the very basics, but I would like to gain a deeper understanding of its nature and when to use alignment. For instance, I wondered about the assembly code of a simple C++ switch statement. I know that under certain circumstances switch statements are based on jump tables, as in the following few lines of code: .section .rodata .align 4 .align 4 .L8: .long .L2 .long .L3 .long .L4 .long .L5 ... .align 4 aligns the following data on the next 4-byte boundary which ensures that fetching these memory locations is efficient, right? I think this is done because there might be things happening before the switch statement which caused misalignment. But why are there actually two calls to .align? Are there any rules of thumb when to call .align or should it simply be done whenever a new block of data is stored in memory and something prior to this could have caused misalignment? In case of arrays, it seems that alignment is done on 32-byte boundaries as soon as the array occupies at least 32 byte. Is it more efficient to do it this way or is there another reason for the 32-byte boundary? I'd appreciate any explanation or hint on literature.

• Javascript getElementsByTagName broken firefox?

  I'm getting the weirdest issues with Javascript in Firefox today. I'm trying to manipulate some table rows, but .getElementsByTagName("tr"); is pulling back junk. dynamicTable.tableBody = dynamicTable.getElementsByTagName("tbody")[0]; var tableRows = dynamicTable.tableBody.getElementsByTagName("TR"); var actualTableRows = new Array(); for(var i in tableRows) { var row = tableRows[i]; alert(row.tagName); if(row.tagName == "TR"){ actualTableRows.push(row); } } dynamicTable.bodyRows = actualTableRows; The puzzling part of course is my temporary hack to fix the error. For some reason .getElementsByTagName("tr") is pulling back some functions also. Incidently the alert above goes something like this TR TR TR TR undefined undefined undefined. The code I wanted was something like this dynamicTable.bodyRows = dynamicTable.tableBody.getElementsByTagName("tr"); But then bodyrows does not contain just tr elements it has the aforementioned junk in it. Any thoughts?

  What is the "proper" of writing the standard read-while loop in Scala? By proper I mean written in a Scala-like way as opposed to a Java-like way. I really feel like I'm missing something, but I can't figure out what. I'm fairly new to Scala, and so I'm asking the question to avoid falling into the pitfall of writing Java-style code in Scala. I'm more interested in the Scala way to solve this kind of problem than in any specific helper method that might be provided by the Scala API to hash a file. (I apologize in advance for my ad hoc Scala adjectives throughout this question.)

• File based caching under PHP

  I've been using http://code.google.com/p/phpbrowscap/ for a project, and it usually works nice. But a few times it's cache, which is plain php-files (see http://code.google.com/p/phpbrowscap/source/browse/trunk/browscap/Browscap.php#372 et. al.), has been "zeroed", i.e. the whole cache file has become large blob of NULLs. Instead of trying to find out why the files become NULL, I though perhaps it might be better to change the caching strategy to something more resilient. So I do wonder if you has any good ideas what would be a good solution; I've been looking at http://www.jongales.com/blog/2009/02/18/simple-file-based-php-cache-class/ and http://www.phpclasses.org/package/313-PHP-Cache-arbitrary-data-in-files-.html and I also though of just saving an serialized array to the file instead of pure php as it's been doing now; But I'm uncertain what approach I should target here. I'm grateful for any insight into this area of technology, as I know it's complex from a performance point of view.

• WordPress Get 1 attachment per post from X category outside the loop

  Hey, Hope someone can help with this. What I want is to display 5 attachments but only 1 attachment from each post from a specific category in the sidebar, which links to the posts permalink. I'm using the following code so far which gets all attachments from all posts, but some posts have more than 1 attachment and I just want to show the first one, and link it to the permalink of the post. • A bit confused about OOP and PHP.

  Hello I have programmed with procedural style a lot before and in these few months I have decided to go OOP. Im a bit confused about OOP and PHP. Lets say I have Categories table and Pages table in my database. I would like to do a page-class and a category-class. Lets say I would have a page that showed information about the category and there would be a list of pages that belong to the category. How would I implement that in OOP way? I have thought that the category class would have a property (array) that would contain all the pages that it has. Well then comes the part that I`m confused about. Should I have a method that would get all the pages with correct categoryID from the database and should I instantiate all the rows as an Page-object? Or should I have a setPages-method in the Category-class and getAllPages-method in the Pages-class and with that method I would set all the pages to the Category-class. Huh Im lost. :D

  Hi, In "Core java 1" I've read CAUTION: An ArrayList is far less efficient than an int[] array because each value is separately wrapped inside an object. You would only want to use this construct for small collections when programmer convenience is more important than efficiency. But in my software I've already used Arraylist instead of normal arrays due to some requirements, though "The software is supposed to have high performance and after I've read the quoted text I started to panic!" one thing I can change is changing double variables to Double so as to prevent auto boxing and I don't know if that is worth it or not, in next sample algorithm public void multiply(final double val) { final int rows = getSize1(); final int cols = getSize2(); for (int i = 0; i < rows; i++) { for (int j = 0; j < cols; j++) { this.get(i).set(j, this.get(i).get(j) * val); } } } My question is does changing double to Double makes a difference ? or that's a micro optimizing that won't affect anything ? keep in mind I might be using large matrices.2nd Should I consider redesigning the whole program again ?

• How to set App as site.com/ in Kohana3

  Hi all! I've only just started using Kohana ( 3 hours ago), and so far it's blown my socks off (and I'm wearing slippers, so that's quite impressive). Right now, I have a controller 'Controller_FrontPage' with associated views and models and I'm trying to get it accesible from the root of my website (eg, http://www.mysite.com/). If I edit the default controller in the bootstrap from: Route::set('default', '(<controller>(/<action>(/<id>)))') ->defaults(array( 'controller' => 'welcome', 'action' => 'index', )); to 'controller' => '', I get an error, could not find controller_ (which makes sense), and if I change it to 'controller' => '/', I get an error, could not find controller_/ (which also makes sense). If I set 'controller' => 'FrontPage', everything works fine, but all my links (html::anchor(...)) point to http://www.mysite.com/FrontPage/*. Is there a way to have all the anchors point to http://www.mysite.com/*?

• Is there really such a thing as a char or short in modern programming?

  Howdy all, I've been learning to program for a Mac over the past few months (I have experience in other languages). Obviously that has meant learning the Objective C language and thus the plainer C it is predicated on. So I have stumbles on this quote, which refers to the C/C++ language in general, not just the Mac platform. With C and C++ prefer use of int over char and short. The main reason behind this is that C and C++ perform arithmetic operations and parameter passing at integer level, If you have an integer value that can fit in a byte, you should still consider using an int to hold the number. If you use a char, the compiler will first convert the values into integer, perform the operations and then convert back the result to char. So my question, is this the case in the Mac Desktop and IPhone OS environments? I understand when talking about theses environments we're actually talking about 3-4 different architectures (PPC, i386, Arm and the A4 Arm variant) so there may not be a single answer. Nevertheless does the general principle hold that in modern 32 bit / 64 bit systems using 1-2 byte variables that don't align with the machine's natural 4 byte words doesn't provide much of the efficiency we may expect. For instance, a plain old C-Array of 100,000 chars is smaller than the same 100,000 ints by a factor of four, but if during an enumeration, reading out each index involves a cast/boxing/unboxing of sorts, will we see overall lower 'performance' despite the saved memory overhead?

• Screen information while Windows system is locked (.NET)

  We have a nightly process that updates applications on a user's pc, and that requires bringing the application down and back up again (not looking to get into changing that process). The problem is that we are building a Windows AppBar on launch which requires a valid screen, and when the system is locked there isn't one in the Screen class. So none of the visual effects are enabled and it shows up real ugly. The only way we currently have around this is to detect a locked screen and just spin and wait until the user unlocks the desktop, then continue launching. Leaving it down isn't an option, as this is a key part of our user's workflow, and they expect it to be up and running if they left it that way the night before. Any ideas?? I can't seem to find the display information anywhere, but it has to be stored off someplace, since the user is still logged in.   I am trying to post an ASPX form which uses SharePoint with PHP. Posting data works with standard forms, I just can't seem to get this form working.   Given two image buffers (assume it's an array of ints of size width * height, with each element a color value), how can I map an area defined by a quadrilateral from one image buffer into the other (always square) image buffer? I'm led to understand this is called "projective transformation". I'm also looking for a general (not language- or library-specific) way of doing this, such that it could be reasonably applied in any language without relying on "magic function X that does all the work for me". An example: I've written a short program in Java using the Processing library (processing.org) that captures video from a camera. During an initial "calibrating" step, the captured video is output directly into a window. The user then clicks on four points to define an area of the video that will be transformed, then mapped into the square window during subsequent operation of the program. If the user were to click on the four points defining the corners of a door visible at an angle in the camera's output, then this transformation would cause the subsequent video to map the transformed image of the door to the entire area of the window, albeit somewhat distorted.

• Instantiating and starting a Scala Actor in a Map

Update } } class MyActor extends Actor { def act() { loop { react { case Update => println("Received Update") case _ => println("Ignoring event") } } } } The line: myActorMap("group2").start will grab the second instance, and let me start it, but I would like to be able to do something more like: groupings.foreach(group => myActorMap += (group -> (new MyActor).start)) but no matter how I wrap the new Actor, the compiler complains with something along the lines of: type mismatch; found : scala.actors.Actor required: com.myCompany.test.MyActor or various other complaints. I know it must be something simple to do with anonymous classes, but I can't see it right now. Any suggestions? Thanks in advance!!

• Symfony 1.2 to 2.3 migration

  I've got a pretty big Symfony 1.2 project to migrate. First, I modified my .htaccess so I can have some pages handled by Symfony 2. What I'd like to do, to make the migration smoother, is to be able to render some SF2 action/templates/methods/... inside SF1. I added the autoloader to the SF1 app, so I can access to twig rendering methods and other stuff. But how can I call a SF2 action ? For example, if I want to migrate only the footer first, I would also need some php methods, not only rendering. That was previously in SF1 component, where should it be now ? If you've got any suggestion about the way of migrating, don't hesitate ! EDIT 1 : Apparently, the only way to do something like that is to render a full twig template, and/or in this template call some other partial twig templates with render(url, params). • Using Tcl DSL in Python

  I have a bunch of Python functions. Let's call them foo, bar and baz. They accept variable number of string arguments and does other sophisticated things (like accessing the network). I want the "user" (let's assume he is only familiar with Tcl) to write scripts in Tcl using those functions. Is this possible to do in Python? If so, how? from Tkinter import *; root= Tk(); root.tk.eval('puts [array get tcl_platform]') is the only integration I know of, which is obviously very limited (not to mention the fact that it starts up X11 server on mac).

• What should I do if i have a factory method which requires different parameters for different implem

  I have an interface, IMessage and a class which have several methods for creating different types of message like so: class MessageService { IMessage TypeAMessage(param 1, param 2) IMessage TypeBMessage(param 1, param 2, param 3, param 4) IMessage TypeCMessage(param 1, param 2, param 3) IMessage TypeDMessage(param 1) } I don't want this class to do all the work for creating these messages so it simply delegates to a MessageCreatorFactory which produces an IMessageCreator depending on the type given (an enumeration based on the type of the message TypeA, TypeB, TypeC etc) interface IMessageCreator { IMessage Create(MessageParams params); } So I have 4 implementations of IMessageCreator: TypeAMessageCreator, TypeBMessageCreator, TypeCMessageCreator, TypeDMessageCreator I ok with this except for the fact that because each type requires different parameters I have had to create a MessageParams object which contains 4 properties for the 4 different params, but only some of them are used in each IMessageCreator. Is there an alternative to this? One other thought I had was to have a param array as the parameter in the Create emthod, but this seems even worse as you don't have any idea what the params are. Or to create several overloads of Create in the interface and have some of them throw an exception if they are not suitable for that particular implementation (ie you called a method which needs more params, so you should have called one of the other overloads.) Does this seem ok? Is there a better solution?

• Facebook Application with PHP running losing session

  Iam trying to build an Facebook Application based on PHP. The Application is running under php on my own Webhost inside an Canvas as iFrame. I have included the newest Client Library for PHP from Facebook: facebook-php-sdk-94fcb13 To Authorize the user inside my application iam trying to use Facebook Connect, like the example shipped with the Client. Everything works fine the 1st Login, but when i hit the F5 Key to reload the page, the session is lost and i have to login again. When i call my application outside of the Facebook Canvas everything is fine. Iam not sure, but i think my Browser (Chrome/FireFox - Ubuntu) is not allowing to store an cookie inside an iFrame. Does someone knows an solution for this Problem?
