• Screen has 1px vertical dead area on the right side

  Meaning that I can not click anything on that 1px vertical area (such as scrollbars). Illustration (purple = screen, black = the dead area): I am thinking Compiz has to be the main suspect, especially as on a guest account, this problem does not exist. I have a dual-monitor setup and this does not happen on the 2nd screen. However, turning off the 2nd display does not make any difference. I had this issue already before upgrading to 13.10 and while doing that, I also resetted all Compiz settings and re-loaded my profile configuration file. I have tried disabling all Compiz plugins under "Window Management" What next?

• Should extension scripts be run in a sandbox?

  In particular, this is about game extensions written in lua (luajit-2.0). I was contemplating whether I should restrict what these scripts can do, and arrived at the conclusion that I probably shouldn't: It's hard to get right. Sounds silly, but chances are my sandbox is gonna end up leaky anyways. The only benefit I could think of would be giving users some sense of security when running third party scripts. The disadvantages would be that it's just incredibly annoying for extension writers. That is, for now, myself (game content will be mostly scripted). The reason I'm asking this now before I actually have anything presentable is that adding a sandbox early on is easy, but would impose said annoying restrictions on myself too. However if I first go on with it and then later decide I do need a sandbox after all, I'm gonna run into problems (I'd either have to rewrite the scripts that are already there, or introduce some form of trust management system which seems to be more trouble than it's worth).

• Atheros 922 PCI WIFI is disabled in Unity but enabled in terminal - How to get it to work?

  I am trying to get my PCI Wireless Atheros 922 card to work. It is disabled in Unity: both the network utility and the desktop (see screenshot http://www.amisdurailhalanzy.be/Screenshot%20from%202012-10-25%2013:19:54.png) I tried many different advises on many different forums. Installed 12.10 instead of 12.04, enabled all interfaces... etc. I have read about the aht9 driver... The terminal shows no hw or sw lock for the Atheros card, nevertheless, it is still disabled. Nothing worked so far, the card is still disabled. Any help is much appreciated.   Whenever I ask a question about game development in an online forum I always get suggestions like learning line drawing algorithms, bit level image manipulation and video decompression etc. However looking at games like God of War 3, I find it hard to believe that these games could be developed using such low level techniques. The sheer awesomeness of such games defy any comprehensible(for me) programming methodology. Besides the gaming hardware is really a monster now days. So it stands to reason that the developers would work at a higher level of abstraction. What is the latest development methodology in the gaming industry? How is it that a team of 30-35 developers (of which most is management and marketing fluff) able to make such mind boggling games?

• Best way to track multiple sites with Google Analytics

  I currently have 63 websites (and counting) that I'm tracking on one Google Analytics account, and I'm starting to realize... this is becoming a bit cumbersome. What's the best way to collect traffic data in bulk? Are there other resources out there that are better suited for this task? Does Google offer a bulk option for this kind of thing? Would it be better to make separate analytics accounts? I'm just wondering if anyone else has had found a better solution that manually setting up all these accounts/setting up the tracking codes etc, when it comes to large scale management.

• I can't get suspend, hibernate and shutdown to work in Ubuntu 12.04

  I recently built a computer with these specs: Asus Motherboard, Intel i3 3.3 GHz dual processor, 8 GB of RAM. I installed 12.04 on a brand new hard drive. I partitioned the hard drive between root, home and swap like I have often read how to do. I cannot get this machine to properly shutdown. I have to hold the power button down now. Although, for the first few days it properly shutdown. I also cannot get the system to hibernate or suspend properly. I have read tons on this and watched many YouTube tutorials on how to fix both, but the computer never wakes up after suspend or hibernate. It just stays on a black screen. Can anyone help? I love 12.04 so far, but these setbacks are making me worried about stability and power management issues. Also, I wonder if it's really bad for the hard drive to force the CPU to shutdown.

  Hey, I'm looking to see if anyone can recommend any books in fundamentals of computer science. I obtained my associates degree as a programmer/analyst a couple years ago and I know a good amount about programming on the .NET framework. I'm even certified on the .NET 4 framework as a web application developer. However, since I was only able to obtain my associates degree, I was deprived at my college on the low-level basics and operations of computers and basic computer science information. I'm really interesting in learning about the low-level operations of a computer and in programming (bytes, bits, memory management, etc.) Can anyone recommend any good computer science books for someone who is decently experienced in programming? • Creating a blog for software changes

  I work for a small company where I maintain a number of project all at once. I would like to create a blog and note software changes/update so that I can keep track of things. Plus it will also serve as help tool for other if they need help. I would like to install something locally on my machine or network, either ASP or PHP is fine. Which software would you recommend? Is it good idea, bad idea? Has anyone done it? I have worked with wordpress and I like it but I am afraid it is not best for code snippets. Any thoughts I do use source control. I am not an expert on it though. I use three different development environment. 1. Visual Studio 2. Eclipse 3. SQL Server Management Studio

• Q&amp;A: Does it make sense to run a personal blog on the Windows Azure Platform?

  I keep seeing people wanting to do this (or something very similar) and then being surprised at how much it might cost them if they went with Windows Azure. Time for a Q&A. Short answer: No, definitely not. Madness, sheer madness. (Hopefully that was clear enough) Longer answer: No because It would cost you a heck of a lot more than just about any other approach to running a blog. A site that can easily be run on a shared hosting solution (as many blogs do today) does not require the rich capabilities of Windows Azure. Capabilities such as simplified deployed and management, dedicated resources, elastic resources, “unlimited” storage etc. It is simply not the type of application the Windows Azure Platform has been designed for. I just learned that the company I work for has posted a new position with half the experience of mine and even lesser set of skills than I have. However, the new position pays the same salary as my current salary while at the same time they declined to pay the asking salary when I was joining the company. How should I counter this? • What is the best idea to put available OS (linux) and Web application to client?

  After a year programming a web based business management system, I got my idea divided into two differents ways to do what I'm doing... I will try to explain in follow lines: First I will describe my enviroment: Webserver: apache, ngynx Programming Language: PHP, Shell Script, Java Script, SQL Database: Mysql Operating System: Linux, UNIX (All Distros) (If manually configured works on windows) Authentication Server: FreeRadius First situation I have my application running on this enviroment that I had just described before, as my application is a SaaS app, then I have my own server to run it all and customers pay to use it as a service accessed by webbrowser. Second Situation The same as before but with one big difference, everything (environment) is installed in the customer, then I need to cryptography all my codes (It includes PHP and Shell Scripts). I think this situation is most difficulty, but I would like to hear it from different points of view.
