  • Client-side code and UPK

    There is a long running discussion in UPK Development regarding the use of any client side code as part of the end-user playback. By this I mean anything which requires an install including ActiveX controls, browser helper objects, stand-alone applications, things that run in the task bar, etc. We all have grown to love zero-footprint applications over the past ten years, but there are some things which are not technically feasible using HTML alone. One example of this is the functionality provided by our SmartHelp in-application support component. This allows the user to launch context sensitive help without making modifications to the target application. (If you are unfamiliar with SmartHelp, more information can be found in the "In-Application Support Guide" in the UPK manual directory) We always try to implement everything we can using only HTML but there are many features which have been requested over the years that would require some client-side code in order to work. When these come up for discussion, there is always a spirited debate about the acceptability of a client side solution. I thought it would be interesting to ask for feedback from a wider audience. What do you think about client-side components? Would your organization consider them? Do you already deploy SmartHelp? Is there a large hurdle to clear for these to be worth the deployment costs?     It's the week of the NRF Big Show and all eyes in the retail industry are on New York. The Big Apple is famous for Big Retail -with a proliferation of incredibly iconic stores. The environment is exciting and familiar even to people visiting this small island for the first time. Most of us have travelled down Fifth Avenue watching movies and TV even if we have never set foot on American soil. I find it one of the most exciting retail cities in the world and I am thrilled this year to be here with so many of Oracle's International retail customers who are joining us for the Retail Exchange. The Oracle program brings retailers from all over the planet together to share ideas and be inspired by New York retail and the NRF event. The show celebrates its 100th year in 2011 and New York itself has been recognized globally as the capital of innovative retail for just as long.  Fifth Avenue is where many global brands have placed their flagship stores, and businesses are in constant competition to set themselves apart from their competitors - both in the store and from the street.  These flag ship retail destinations present what today's customers are finding most exciting and delightful about retail. For the tourist market, they may only visit these stores once, but the impression that a trip to a flagship store leaves with a customer can last a lifetime.  One of the stores that is currently turning heads on Fifth Avenue is Hollister, sister brand to Abercrombie and Fitch, which has filled its shop front with a massive live video (and audio) feed of surfers on the beach in California.  To complete the effect, they also have troughs of water in front of the video screens to bring the sea to the street.  And this isn't the only kind of surfing that retailers are considering today and multi-channel retail is a hot topic that all of the retailers joining the Retail Exchange are considering.   The rest of the world looks to the brands along Fifth Avenue for inspiration - how they take advantage of new opportunities, how they set themselves apart from their competitors and how they keep their products fresh and desirable.     I am validating input to my ASP.NET application using StringLengthValidators, and using the ValidationSummary control to display the error messages. To localize the application, the StringLengthValidators have the MessageTemplateResourceName and MessageTemplateResourceType attributes set. The first time the validator runs, it picks up the correct error message based on the current culture setting. If I change the language setting while running the app, the next time the validator runs, the ValidationSummary it still displays the error message for the old culture. The text for all other controls is being updated correctly. Any ideas, folks?

  • Enteprise Library Exception Handling for WCF Fault Contracts - CLIENT SIDE

    I have a Windows Service which communicates with WCF services. The WCF services are all fault shielded and generate custom UserFaultContracts and ServiceFaultContracts. No problems there. In the Windows Service I am using EntLib for exception handling and logging. This is where I am unglued. And I hate becoming unglued. The fault is captured and logged...but I can't get the details of the fault.   • Clob as param for PL/SQL Java Stored Procedure

    I have a java stored procedure that takes in a clob representing a chunk of javascript and mins it. The structure of the function calling the JSP is as follows: function MIN_JS(pcl_js in clob) return clob as language java name 'JSMin.min(oracle.sql.CLOB) return oracle.sql.CLOB'; In the actual JSP, I have the following: import oracle.sql.CLOB; public class JSMin { ... public static min(CLOB js) { ... } The problem I'm having is that whenever I pass a clob to JS_MIN, it is always interpreted as null inside the JSP. I've checked the clob before calling JS_MIN annd it definitely has contents. Any ideas as to what I'm missing? Any help is greatly appreciated.

  • Speed Difference between native OLE DB and ADO.NET

    I'm looking for suggestions as well as any benchmarks or observations people have. We are looking to rewrite our data access layer and are trying to decide between native C++ OLEDB or ADO.NET for connecting with databases. Currently we are specifically targeting Oracle which would mean we would use the Oracle OLE DB provider and the ODP.NET. Requirements: 1. All applications will be in managed code so using native C++ OLEDB would require C++/CLI to work (no PInvoke way to slow). 2. Application must work with multiple databases in the future, currently just targeting Oracle specifically. Question: 1. Would it be more performant to use ADO.NET to accomplish this or use native C++ OLE DB wrapped in a Managed C++ interface for managed code to access? Any ideas, or help or places to look on the web would be greatly appreciated.

  • Weird problems with ruby servers on Ubuntu 9.10

    So I'm using Ubuntu 9.10, trying to setup and deploy my app, but for some reason, whenever I try and boot up thin, it tells me it can't find rails, script/console, however, works fine. Heck, even script/server works fine as long as I don't try and daemonize it, then it just fails without any errors. Any ideas on what the hell is going on? I'm using rvm with the default ubuntu ruby as my system ruby. I have set REE as the default ruby though. This was still happening back when I had only REE installed via their installer script too.

  • How to provide custom connection string for Logging Application Block instead of using the one in .c

    I'm modifying an existing winforms application to use the Logging Application Block. For historical reasons this app gets its main database connection string from the registry, and I'd like the Logging Application Block to use the same details for logging to the database. How can I do this? The approaches i can think of are: 1) Create a new TraceListener and implement the same sort of functionality as in FormattedDatabaseTraceListener. If I take this approach, should I inherit from CustomTraceListener, and if so how do I pass an attribute of the formatter to use? 2) Create a new ConfigurationSource that provides different details when asked for the database connection. All other requests would be passed through to a FileConfigurationSource, but when asked for the database connection details the object would read the appropriate bits from the registry instead. but it's not obvious which is more appropriate, or how to go about doing it. Any suggestions? I'm using EntLib 3.1. thanks, -Rory

    Does anyone have any good stories of these kinds of organizations being open to using open source dependencies (and also tools). Many staff I've encountered have little or no exposure to open source/systems and open source is treated with great suspicion. Some reasons given for this are lack of support and robustness, which is ironic given the number of end-of-life unsupported vendor products that are in production. I'm also interested in any success stories where you've seen open source go into orgs like this and have a real benefit!
