  • How can I implement incremental search on command line?

    I'd like to write small scripts which feature incremental search (find-as-you-type) on the command line. Use case: I have my mobile phone connected via USB, Using gammu --sendsms TEXT I can write text messages. I have the phonebook as CSV, and want to search-as-i-type on that. What's the easiest/best way to do it? It might be in bash/zsh/Perl/Python or any other scripting language.

    I'm using this example code to grayscale an image,but the result is not right: I = imread('coins.png'); level = graythresh(I); BW = im2bw(I,level); imshow(BW) Where to see how graythresh is actually implemented? BTW,is there a reason for using matlab feels so alike with python? Or is it known that graythresh doesn't work well for images with little spatial resolution(like 62*21 ones)?

  • Vim navigation clunkiness

    I've committed myself to diving into vim to become faster at writing code for ruby/python and I'm having a hard time navigating around files. Mainly, I'm referring to switching between insert mode and navigation modes. Maybe I'm just not completely used to the editor yet but it feels very awkward to constantly be switching in and out of insert mode. Is this something that will go away with time? Are there any tricks to getting quicker at moving in and out of insert mode?

  • Performance optimization for mssql: decrease stored procedures execution time or unload the server?

    Hello everybody! We have a web service which provides search over hotels. There is a problem with performance: a single request to the service takes around 5000 ms. Almost all of the time is spent in database by executing storing procedures. During the request our server (mssql2008) consumes ~90% of the processor time. When 2 requests are made in parallel the average time grows and is around 7000 ms. When number of request is increasing, the average time of response is increasing as well. We have 20-30 requests per minute. Which kind of optimization is the best in this case having in mind that the goal is to provide stable response time for the service: 1) Try to decrease the stored procedures execution time 2) Try to find the way how to unload the server It is interesting to hear from people who deal with booking sites.     We are running on SSL on following server topology: 1 ISA (SSL Terminate/cache/proxy+AD authentication) 1 Sharepoint 1 IBM DB2 Database as enterprise/corporate DB 1 MS SQL Server as local DB We have recently optimized the caching, compression, minification, and other ASP.net best practices such as viewstate and cookie sizes, minimizing round trips, parallel connections/domain sharding and a lot more.... Now we are not convinced that the we are in an optimized position as the network resources i.e. bandwidth and especially latency are out of our control!! The client/browser to server/sharepoint is trans-Atlantic i.e. (ASIA, USA, EUROPE). As of my understanding the only ways to improve the network (latency) are: - TCP/SSL optimization - hardware/software? - CDNs - cloud or our own ? Your opinion and insights would be much appreciated Best regards Hertzel

    When writing web apps in Python, it brain dead easy to run a development server. Django and Google App Engine both ship with simple servers. The main feature I'm looking for is no configuration. I want something like the GAE dev server where you just pass the directory of the app as a parameter when the server is started. Is there a reason that this is more difficult with PHP?

  • C++: Chr() and unichr() equivalent?

    I could have sworn I used a chr() function 40 minutes ago but can't find the file. I know it can go up to 256 so I use this: std::string chars = ""; chars += (char) 42; //etc So that's alright, but I really want to access unicode characters. Can I do (w_char) 512? Or maybe something just like the unichr() function in python, I just can't find a way to access any of those characters.

    I am working on a restructuring of a legacy database and its associated applications. To keep old and new working in parallel I have created a development database and copied the tables of interest to it, e.g. create database devdb; drop table if exists devdb.tab1; CREATE TABLE devdb.tab1 like working.tab1; insert into devdb.tab1 select * from working.tab1; Having done this I notice that triggers affecting tab1 have not been copied over. Is there any way in which I can produce a working copy of tab1, i.e. data, permissions, triggers, everything?

  • VB.NET: SQLite to MSSQL

    I have a vb.net project that uses a SQLite database. I do this by using dataset/table adapters. The client is happy and all works well. However I have just heard that they plan on providing this product to another customer that wishes to use their MSSQL database. So I am writing this post so I can mentally prepare for this before I begin. I am not a database pro and have really enjoyed the simplicity of setting up and managing an SQLite database. So any ideas on the easiest way to support MSSQL as well? I am happy to run them parallel to each other. Can I just make a separate service / middleware that syncs the SQLite database to the MSSQL on a timer and does not care about what the main app is up to? Any pointers are appreciated.

    I have a basic ASP.NET application which is used to request data which is stored on disk. This is loaded from files and sent as the response. I want to be able to store the data loaded from these files in memory to reduce the number of reads from disk. All of the requests will be asking for the same data, so it makes sense to have a single cache of in-memory data which is accessible to all requests. What is the best way to create a single accessible object instance which I can use to store and access this cached data? I've looked into HttpApplication, but apparently a new instance of this is created for parallel requests and so it doesn't fit my needs.

  • Looking for a script/tool to dump a list of installed features and programs on Windows Server 2008 R

    Hi, The same compiled .Net / C++ / Com program does different things on two seemingly same computers. Both have DOZENS of things installed on them. I would like to figure out what the difference between the two is by looking at an ASCII diff. Before that I need to "serialize" the list of installed things in a plain readable format - sorted alphabetically + one item per line. A Python script would be ideal, but I also have Perl, PowerShell installed. Thank you.

    I am writing some simple output in fortran, but I want whitespace delimiters. If use the following statement, however: format(A20,ES18.8,A12,ES18.8) I get output like this: p001t0000 3.49141273E+01obsgp_oden 1.00000000E+00 I would prefer this: p001t0000 3.49141273E+01 obsgp_oden 1.00000000E+00 I tried using negative values for width (like in Python) but no dice. So, is there a way to left-justify the numbers? Many thanks in advance!

  • Multithreaded update of multiple ProgressBars

    I have developped an application that can process data (in my case image algorithms performed on videos). I have developed different ProcessingMethods. Sometimes several videos are processed in parallel. Each process runs in a seperate thread. I have a GUI with several ProgressBars, one for each thread that is processing data. What is a good way to update the ProgressBar? Today my GUI is creating all the processing threads and one progressBars for each thread. Then I pass those progressBars to the threads, which pass them to the ProcessingMethod. The ProcessingMethod will then update the progressbar (using Invoke(..)). I have different processingMethods. Within each of these methods I have copy-paste code to update the progressBar. Although I am a new to programming, I know copy-paste is not good. What is a good way to make it better?
