  • Microsoft Arc Mouse OS X

    I recently bought a new Mac Book Pro with Mountain Lion 10.8 on it. The only portable mouse I have is my Microsoft Arc Mouse. I wanted to use it with the laptop so I installed the IntelliPoint 8.2 for Mac from Microsofts website. According to their website, this driver is for OS X 10.4-10.7. Now I thought that wouldnt be too much of an issue but unfortunately for me, the driver installs fine and the mouse is detected but I get no movement and when I click the buttons nothing happens. I took the mouse with me on a business trip to EU and before I left I checked if the mouse worked with my desktop which is running Windows 7 and it worked without any hiccups. I'm not too sure where the OS differs from 10.7 to 10.8. I found an article online but it doesn't pertain to my mouse, although it could be of assistance.     I want to use netcat as a proxy to log http requests and responses to files, then tail these to inspect traffic. Think wireshark. Tried the following where 'fifo' is a named pipe, 'in' and 'out' are files, netcat proxy on port 8080, server on port 8081. while true; do cat fifo | nc -l -p 8080 | tee -a in | nc localhost 8081 | tee -a out 1fifo; done Problems: Netcat stop responing after first request (while loop ignored?). Netcat fails with msg localhost [127.0.0.1] 8081 (tproxy) : Connection refused if server unavailable on 8081. Question: Is it possible to "lazily" connect to 8081 when request is made? I.e. I do not want to have 8081 running when netcat is started.

I found that Office 365 does not support application templates (am I right?) I tried to install the help desk template here and also the Help Desk here, but I didn't find a way. I've seen that there is a commercial app, but I'm interested in checking some other options (specially free options).

  • How to recover unsaved PSD file on MacOSX

    Adobe Photoshop creates temporary *.psb files for emergency recovery at this path: ~/Library/Application Support/Adobe/Adobe Photoshop CS6/AutoRecover The files created have names like _Untitled-10FDB62ECBABBFF5C8EAD958EBC9CFAE2E.psb with current user:group as designated owner. If you save the file you are working on OR you hit "don't save" when prompted, the temporary files are deleted. Now, system creates and deletes these files. I am trying to recover the emergency file but I think the "undelete" utilities were created assuming the "user" deletes the file - like going into the trash bin and then emptying the trash... Anyone having experience about this? Thanks.

  • Mac Grey/White Screen of Death

    The other night I updated my iTunes to the latest version (through Software Update) when I came to turn on my computer I was greeted with the dreaded white screen of death. I use an early 2008 iMac 24". I've tried the basic things, unplugging/turning off accessories, trying to boot from the install disk, reseting pram, etc, etc. Still no luck and no change what-so-ever. All I've been able to ascertain that my keyboard still works (by ejecting). I should point out that I did recently replace my Hard drive with a Western Digital Black 500GB (though the computer is well out of warrenty) and I'm a little concerned that the problem could be the screen. Update (18/05/10): I've been told that I could be getting the White/Grey screen of death because the optical flex cable is damaged (aparently this is common). Apparently the Optical Drive is part of the POST sequence, and an inability to read the drive can result in failure for the system to move on to other bootable volumes. More info here. I will disable the optical drive and see if that works.

  • Western Digital not recognized by Windows after power Outage on windows

    I have WD Essential Plus 1.5TB (formatted in NTFS). It was working fine under windows and mac mini. While it was connected to the mac mini, I had an power outage and now the HD is not being recognized under windows anymore. Now on the mac mini the HD is fine and I can see my data. When I use ActiveBootDisk under windows, then I can see the data as well. I updated the drivers on windows machine and also updated the firmware on the HD, but its still not being recognized. Is there any way for me to fix the HD under windows without having to re-format it?

  • Home server hard drive: 186k start-stop cycles in 325 days?

    I set up a home server about a year ago, using Ubuntu server (10.04 LTS at the moment), four disks in RAID 5 for storage (WD Green 1.5 TB) and a laptop drive for the OS. Today the output of smartctl, a command line utility for checking the SMART attributes of a hard drive, tells me that the primary OS drive has had no less than 186,000 start-stop cycles in 325 days and may be nearing the end of its lifespan. The smartctl output is in "normalized values", in this case a number between 200 and 000, where 200 is "brand new" and 000 means "worn out". My disk gets 001. So I wonder what happened: 186k start/stop cycles in 7820 hours is about one start/stop per 2.5 minutes around the clock. This seems somewhat excessive for a computer that sees actual use once or twice per day. (The RAID disks are normal, averaging to one start/stop per day, as expected.) Does anyone have similar experiences, or pointers to what might be the issue here? Specifically I'd like to know Why the massive start/stop count? Do I have some sort of configuration issue? Could there be a background service that is causing trouble? Could having a laptop disk as the OS drive be part of the problem? Can anyone confirm or deny this?   • Sharing hp Deskjet F380 using cups via http driver issues with xp client

    Hi the problem is xp doesn't have built in drivers for my printer but vista does. On vista it works perfectly without any issues. However when I try using xp, it insists that I select a driver from the selection xp offers by default. The drivers I've downloaded from HP don't support networking. Hp have stated they're non networkable. Is there anything I can do about this? Any help is greatly appreciated and would save me getting ear ache!

  • IDE Controller Error causing BSOD?

    Hi all, So I was thinking before that a series of "SideBySide" errors were causing BSODs on my netbook (Samsung N120 + 2GB RAM). But I think it is an "atapi" error which says: "The driver detected a controller error on \Device\Ide\IdePort0." Has anyone else had this error and is there a fix for it? Also, I had other "atapi" errors before it saying: "The device, \Device\Ide\IdePort0, did not respond within the timeout period."

  • gpg symmetric encryption using pipes

    I'm trying to generate keys to lock my drive (using DM-Crypt with LUKS) by pulling data from /dev/random and then encrypting that using GPG. In the guide I'm using, it suggests using the following command: dd if=/dev/random count=1 | gpg --symmetric -a >./[drive]_key.gpg If you do it without a pipe, and feed it a file, it will pop up an (n?)curses prompt for you to type in a password. However when I pipe in the data, it repeats the following message four times and sits there frozen: pinentry-curses: no LC_CTYPE known assuming UTF-8 It also says can't connect to '/root/.gnupg/S.gpg-agent': File or directory doesn't exist, however I am assuming that this doesn't have anything to do with it, since it shows up even when the input is from a file. So I guess my question boils down to this: is there a way to force gpg to accept the passphrase from the command line, or in some other way get this to work, or will I have to write the data from /dev/random to a temporary file, and then encrypt that file? (Which as far as I know should be alright due to the fact that I'm doing this on the LiveCD and haven't yet created the swap, so there should be no way for it to be written to disk.)

  • AMD 700, 800 series chipset. I'm lost.

    I've been an Intel / NVidia user ever since I started using computers. Intel really gone up with the prices, and they won't get cheaper. So I decided to get an AMD. But WHICH one? I mean.. not shopping question but.. what are the differences? Like: 880GMA comes only with a single PCI ex and it looks like a chinese replica (no offense). While 890FX comes with 5PCI-ex for QuadCrossfire. Also.. what's the deal with 7xx series? I mean.. its the same price. Yet its older? Or why is it 7xx? Isn't there a single chipset between? Not chinese YET it's durable/fine for long-term usage? What it should know (desktop stuff): NVidia GPU (Zalman AMP2 GTX 260^2 (one card)) Phenom 1090T cpu A somewhat good audio. Any ideas which is the chipset I'm searching for? If this sounds too much of a shopping question, feel free to edit. I just want some clarification on these chipsets.

  • How to get monitor resolution of 1680x1050 using ATI Radeon HD 2600 PRO in a dual monitor setup

    I have Sapphire ATI Radeon HD 2600 PRO graphics card in my Windows Server 2008 x64 machine. It has two outputs a VGA and a DVI. I have connected the DVI to my Dell 24" monitor with 1900x1200 resolution and it works 100%. The VGA I have connected to my second monitor a Samsung 22" with native resolution of 1680x1050. But the ATI driver and Catalyst control centre doesn't show this resolution as an option. If I choose a lower resolution like 1280x1024 it looks really bad and fuzzy. I searched in google and downloaded the powerstrip tool that allowed me to create a custom resolution of 1680x1050 and then this option shows up in Catalyst control centre and my 2nd monitor works fine now. But I don't want to pay for an application to choose a display resolution. Why doesn't ATI show me that option by default even though it has no problem in actually supporting the display at resolution. Is there a way to get 1680x1050 resolution using ATI drivers only ?

Also, I noticed one other thing. When I access localhost locally then I am asked to enter user/pass, but if I access remotely the I get the following warning: Under Construction The site you were trying to reach does not currently have a default page.   • How can I disable the automatic switch to "library" mode in Windows 7's Media Player 12?

    Whenever I plug any USB device into my computer while running Windows Media Player 12 in Windows 7, it will automatically swtich the player from the Now Playing mode to Library mode. This is intended to faciliate syncing between Media Player and MP3 players, but it happens for any USB device. I'd like this to not happen since it's infuriating to see this take place while I'm watching something on a separate screen in Media Player just from plugging in a USB key. This has nothing to do with Windows autorun, and nothing to do with versions of Windows pre-7. And no, switching to some other video player is not an option; I've tried them all, none are as good as stock Media Player in 7.

  • Abysmal transfer speeds on gigabit network

    I am having trouble getting my Gigabit network to work properly between my desktop computer and my Windows Home Server. When copying files to my server (connected through my switch), I am seeing file transfer speeds of below 10MB/s, sometimes even below 1MB/s. The machine configurations are: Desktop Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 Windows 7 Ultimate x64 2x WD Green 1TB drives in striped RAID 4GB RAM AB9 QuadGT motherboard Realtek RTL8810SC network adapter Windows Home Server AMD Athlon 64 X2 4GB RAM 6x WD Green 1,5TB drives in storage pool Gigabyte GA-MA78GM-S2H motherboard Realtek 8111C network adapter Switch dLink Green DGS-1008D 8-port Both machines report being connected at 1Gbps. The switch lights up with green lights for those two ports, indicating 1Gbps. When connecting the machines through the switch, I am seeing insanely low speeds from WHS to the desktop measured with iperf: 10Kbits/sec (WHS is running iperf -c, desktop is iperf -s). Using iperf the other way (WHS is iperf -s, desktop iperf -c) speeds are also bad (~20Mbits/sec). Connecting the machines directly with a patch cable, I see much higher speeds when connecting from desktop to WHS (~300 Mbits/sec), but still around 10Kbits/sec when connecting from WHS to the desktop. File transfer speeds are also much quicker (both directions).
