  • What causes player box/world geometry glitches in old games?

    - by Alexander
I'm looking to understand and find the terminology for what causes - or allows - players to interfere with geometry in old games. Famously, ID's Quake3 gave birth to a whole community of people breaking the physics by jumping, sliding, getting stuck and launching themselves off points in geometry. Some months ago (though I'd be darned if I can find it again!) I saw a conference held by Bungie's Vic DeLeon and a colleague in which Vic briefly discussed the issues he ran into while attempting to wrap 'collision' objects (please correct my terminology) around environment objects so that players could appear as though they were walking on organic surfaces, while not clipping through them or appear to be walking on air at certain points, due to complexities in the modeling. My aim is to compose a case study essay for University in which I can tackle this issue in games, drawing on early exploits and how techniques have changed to address such exploits and to aid in the gameplay itself. I have 3 current day example of where exploits still exist, however specifically targeting ID Software clearly shows they've massively improved their techniques between Q3 and Q4. So in summary, with your help please, I'd like to gain a slightly better understanding of this issue as a whole (its terminology mainly) so I can use terms and ask the right questions within the right contexts. In practical application, I know what it is, I know how to do it, but I don't have the benefit of level design knowledge yet and its technical widgety knick-knack terms =) Many thanks in advance AJ

  • Ubuntu installer does not show drives

    - by Tanweer Rashid
    I am trying to install Ubuntu 12.04 LTS on my Inspiron laptio, but the installer does not show any drives. My system has a 1TB SATA drive and a 32GB SSD. As far as I can figure, the boot files are kept on the SSD for fast startup (for Windows). During Win7 installation, I had to manually load drivers for RAID controller to see all available drives. Running fdisk -l from the live CD shows the following: ubuntu@ubuntu:~$ sudo fdisk -l Disk /dev/sda: 1000.2 GB, 1000204886016 bytes 255 heads, 63 sectors/track, 121601 cylinders, total 1953525168 sectors Units = sectors of 1 * 512 = 512 bytes Sector size (logical/physical): 512 bytes / 512 bytes I/O size (minimum/optimal): 512 bytes / 512 bytes Disk identifier: 0x234b4782 Device Boot Start End Blocks Id System /dev/sda1 63 80324 40131 de Dell Utility /dev/sda2 * 81920 41627647 20772864 7 HPFS/NTFS/exFAT /dev/sda3 41627648 357019647 157696000 7 HPFS/NTFS/exFAT /dev/sda4 357019648 1953517567 798248960 f W95 Ext'd (LBA) /dev/sda5 672415744 1312966655 320275456 7 HPFS/NTFS/exFAT /dev/sda6 1312968704 1953517567 320274432 7 HPFS/NTFS/exFAT Disk /dev/sdb: 32.0 GB, 32017047552 bytes 255 heads, 63 sectors/track, 3892 cylinders, total 62533296 sectors Units = sectors of 1 * 512 = 512 bytes Sector size (logical/physical): 512 bytes / 512 bytes I/O size (minimum/optimal): 512 bytes / 512 bytes Disk identifier: 0x234b474b Device Boot Start End Blocks Id System /dev/sdb1 2048 16775167 8386560 84 OS/2 hidden C: drive ubuntu@ubuntu:~$ In the Ubuntu installer, I can only choose /dev/sdb for "Device for boot loader installation", and sdb doesn't show any drives. I cannot select /dev/sda. Any ideas anyone? Thanks.

  • Discs in DVD Drive not being read

    - by I Heart Ubuntu
Does anyone have an experience with Ubuntu that is no longer reading discs in the DVD drive? This is my first time Ubuntu does not see the disc :| The disc is fine and works on my other Ubuntu computers. The drive is there and powered. I can even type in eject in a terminal and the drive will open. Using the command: sudo lshw -C disk I am able to see info about my drive too. Actually BOTH of my internal DVD drives cannot read discs anymore. • Extending AutoVue Through the API

    - by GrahamOracle
The AutoVue API (previously called the “VueBean” API) is a great way to extend AutoVue Client/Server Deployment – specifically the client component – beyond the out-of-the-box capabilities and into new use-cases. In addition to having a solid grasp of J2SE programming, make sure to leverage the following resources if you’re developing or interested in developing customizations/extensions to AutoVue Client/Server Deployment: Programmer’s Guide: Before all else, read through the AutoVue API Programmer’s Guide to get an understanding of the architecture of the API. The Programmer’s Guide is included with the installation of AutoVue, and is posted on the Oracle Technology Network (OTN) website for the recent versions of AutoVue: http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/documentation/autovue-091442.html Javadocs: The AutoVue API Javadocs document the many packages, classes, and methods available to you. The Javadocs are included in the product installation under the \docs\JavaDocs\VueBean folder (easiest starting point is through the file index.html). Integrations Forum: If you have development questions that aren’t answered through the documentation, feel free to register and post in the public AutoVue Integrations Forum. For more information refer to the following blog post from October 2010: https://blogs.oracle.com/enterprisevisualization/entry/exciting_news_autovue_integrat Code Samples: Although the Oracle Support team’s scope of Support for API/customization topics is to answer questions regarding information already provided in the documentation (i.e. not to design or develop custom solutions), there are cases where Support comes across interesting samples or code snippets that may benefit various customers. In those cases, our Support team posts the samples into the Oracle knowledge base, and tracks them through a single reference note. The link to the KM Note depends on how you currently access the My Oracle Support portal: Flash interface: https://support.oracle.com/CSP/main/article?cmd=show&type=NOT&doctype=REFERENCE&id=1325990.1 (New) HTML interface: https://supporthtml.oracle.com/epmos/faces/ui/km/SearchDocDisplay.jspx?type=DOCUMENT&id=1325990.1 Happy coding!

  • Making LISPs manageable

    - by Andrea
I am trying to learn Clojure, which seems a good candidate for a successful LISP. I have no problem with the concepts, but now I would like to start actually doing something. Here it comes my problem. As I mainly do web stuff, I have been looking into existing frameworks, database libraries, templating libraries and so on. Often these libraries are heavily based on macros. Now, I like very much the possibility of writing macros to get a simpler syntax than it would be possible otherwise. But it definitely adds another layer of complexity. Let me take an example of a migration in Lobos from a blog post: (defmigration add-posts-table (up [] (create clogdb (table :posts (integer :id :primary-key ) (varchar :title 250) (text :content ) (boolean :status (default false)) (timestamp :created (default (now))) (timestamp :published ) (integer :author [:refer :authors :id] :not-null)))) (down [] (drop (table :posts )))) It is very readable indeed. But it is hard to recognize what the structure is. What does the function timestamp return? Or is it a macro? Having all this freedom of writing my own syntax means that I have to learn other people's syntax for every library I want to use. How can I learn to use these components effectively? Am I supposed to learn each small DSL as a black box?

Hi, I received this spam in my catch-all. As a webmaster of the domain it was sent to, I am really curious what the reason for this mail is. It was sent to a non-existent user "tania" on my domain - here I used mydomain.zzz - what do the sender want to achieve? Since many mail servers have stopped backscattering, not getting a bounce would not mean anything, would it? And if this is off topic, where inb the StackExchange WOULD it be on topic? • How to parse JSON data from web more faster [closed]

    - by Kaidul Islam Sazal
    I have json inventory inventory.json on the server like this: [ { "body" : "SUV", "color" : { "ext" : "White diamond pearl", "int" : "Taupe" }, "id" : "276181", "make" : "Acura", "miles" : 35949, "model" : "RDX", "pic" : [ { "full" : "http://images1.dealercp.com/90961/000JNBD/001_0292.jpg" } ], "power" : { "drive" : "Front wheel drive", "eng" : "2.3L DOHC PGM-FI 16-VALVE", "trans" : "Automatic" }, "price" : { "net" : 29488 }, "stock" : "6942", "trim" : "AWD 4dr Tech Pkg SUV", "vin" : "5J8TB2H53BA000334", "year" : 2011 }, { "body" : "Sedan", "color" : { "ext" : "Premium white pearl", "int" : "Taupe" }, "id" : "275622", "make" : "Acura", "miles" : 40923, "model" : "TSX", "pic" : [ { "full" : "http://images1.dealercp.com/90961/000JMC6/001_1765.jpg" } ], "power" : { "drive" : "Front wheel drive", "eng" : "2.4L L4 MPI DOHC 16V", "trans" : "Automatic" }, "price" : { "net" : 22288 }, "stock" : "6945", "trim" : "4dr Sdn I4 Auto Sedan", "vin" : "JH4CU2F66AC011933", "year" : 2010 } ] here are two index, There are almost 5000 index like this. I parsed this json like this: var url = "inventory/inventory.json"; $.getJSON(url, function(data){ $.each(data, function(index, item){ //straight-forward loop if(item.year == 2012) { $('#desc').append(item.make + ' ' + item.model + ' ' + '<br/>' + item.price.net + '<br/>' + item.pic[0].full); } }); }); This is working fine.But the problem is that, this searching and fetching process is little bit slow as there are 5000 indexes already and it's increasing day by day. It seems that, it is a straight-forward loop to parse the data and a normal brute-force method. Now I want to know if there any time efiicient way to parse more faster.Any faster method to parse instead of straight-forward loop ?

  • Is this a dual monitor reset bug?

    - by Tentresh
My two displays are: Intel GMA x4500 Laptop (1280x800 native resolution of the built-in display) External display (1920x1080) A few minutes after I login to my dual monitor setup, it gets reset to mirror screens. If I restore the settings via the displays application, everything is fine. • Ubuntu 13.04 to 13.10: Filesystem check or mount failed

    - by SamHuckaby
I attempted to upgrade from Ubuntu 13.04 to 13.10 today, and mid upgrade the system started flaking out, and eventually locked up entirely. I was forced to restart the computer, and am now unable to get the computer to boot up at all. When I boot currently, it takes me to the GRUB menu, and I can choose to boot normally, or boot in an older version. I have tried several things, which I list below, but no matter what, when I try to finish booting into Ubuntu, I receive the following error: Filesystem check or mount failed. A maintenance shell will now be started. CONTROL-D will terminate this shell and continue booting after re-trying filesystems. Any further errors will be ignored root@ubuntu-computername:~# I have fun fsck -f and everything appears correct, no errors are reported. and it passes all 5 checks. If I run fdisk -l then I get the following information: Disk /dev/sda: 320.1 GB, 320072933376 bytes 255 heads, 63 sectors/track, 38913 cylinders, total 625142448 sectors Units = sectors of 1 * 512 = 512 bytes Sector size (logical/physical): 4096 bytes / 4096 bytes Disk identifier: 0x00010824 Device Boot Start End Blocks Id System /dev/sda1 * 2048 608456703 304227328 83 Linux /dev/sda2 608458750 625141759 8341505 5 Extended Partition 2 does not start on physical sector boundary. /dev/sda5 608458752 625141759 8341504 82 Linux swap / Solaris Disk /dev/sdb: 320.1 GB, 320072933376 bytes 255 heads, 63 sectors/track, 38913 cylinders, total 625142448 sectors Units = sectors of 1 * 512 = 512 bytes Sector size (logical/physical): 512 bytes / 4096 bytes I/O size (minimum/optimal): 4096 bytes / 4096 bytes Disk identifier: 0x0fb4b7e8 Device Boot Start End Blocks Id System /dev/sdb1 8192 625139711 312565760 7 HPFS/NTFS/exFAT I am considering just installing a new OS on the other disk, that currently has nothing on it, and then just attempting to scrape my data off the old disk (thankfully I didn't encrypt the files). Really my question is this: Can I salvage this Ubuntu install, or should I give up and just reinstall?

  • Pausing and Resuming the jQuery / ASP.NET News Ticker

Many websites display a news ticker of one sort or another. A news ticker is a user interface element that displays a subset of a list of items, cycling through them one at a time after a set interval. In December 2010 I wrote an article titled Use jQuery and ASP.NET to Build a News Ticker that explored how to create your own news ticker widget using jQuery and ASP.NET. The news ticker's content is defined as an unordered list (<ul>) where each list item (<li>) represents a news headline. Once the ticker's content is defined, having it cycle through the head lines is as simple as calling the JavaScript function startTicker(id, numberToShow, duration), which begins cycling the headlines in the unordered list with the specified id, showing numberToShow headlines at a time and cycling to the next headline every duration number of milliseconds. This installment shows how to enhance the news ticker to enable pausing and resuming. With these enhancements, the ticker can be configured to automatically pause rotating its headlines when the user mouses over it, and to resume rotating them once the user mouses out. Similarly, with a bit of additional markup and script you can add pause and play buttons to a ticker, allowing a user to start and stop the ticker by clicking an image or button. EntryDate { get; set; } public DateTime? DeliveryDate { get; set; } //... public virtual ICollection<MTMVehicleService> Services{ get; set; } } Now, I am focusing on the stay service as an example: I would like to know at invoicing time which class(es) would be responsible for generating the invoice item for the service and for each vehicle? This should calculate the duration cost knowing that the duration could be invoiced partially so the like is as follows: not yet invoiced stay days * stay price per day. At this moment I have InvoiceItemsGenerator do everything but I am aware that there is a better design.

  • When is it better to offload work to the RDBMS rather than to do it in code?

    - by GeminiDomino
Okay, I'll cop to it: I'm a better coder than I am at databases, and I'm wondering where thoughts on "best practices" lie on the subject of doing "simple" calculations in the SQL query vs. in the code, such as this MySQL example (I didn't write it, I just have to maintain it!) -- This returns the username, and the users age as of the last event. SELECT u.username as user, IF ((DAY(max(e.date)) - DAY(u.DOB)) &lt; 0 , TRUNCATE(((((YEAR(max(e.date))*12)+MONTH(max(e.date))) -((YEAR(u.DOB)*12)+MONTH(u.DOB)))-1)/12, 0), TRUNCATE((((YEAR(max(e.date))*12)+MONTH(max(e.date))) - ((YEAR(u.DOB)*12)+MONTH(u.DOB)))/12, 0)) AS age FROM users as u JOIN events as e ON u.id = e.uid ... Compared to doing the "heavy" lifting in code: Query: SELECT u.username, u.DOB as dob, e.event_date as edate FROM users as u JOIN events as e ON u.id = e.uid code: function ageAsOfDate($birth, $aod) { //expects dates in mysql Y-m-d format... list($by,$bm,$bd) = explode('-',$birth); list($ay,$am,$ad) = explode('-',$aod); //Insert Calculations here ... return $Dy; //Difference in years } echo "Hey! ". $row['user'] ." was ". ageAsOfDate($row['dob'], $row['edate']) . " when we last saw him."; I'm pretty sure in a simple case like this it wouldn't make much difference (other than the creeping feeling of horror when I have to make changes to queries like the first one), but I think it makes it clearer what I'm looking for. Thanks!

  • How to register a .cn domain

    - by user359650
I would like to register a .cn domain. I found the below pages which list the officially accredited registrars: -based in China: http://www.cnnic.net.cn/html/Dir/2007/06/05/4635.htm -based outside China: http://www.cnnic.net.cn/html/Dir/2007/06/25/4671.htm Needless to say that the registrars based in China have their website in Chinese which effectively prevents me from using them. There are 11 oversea registrars and I'm wondering which one I should be using. If you look at the big names, they all have their .cn registered (facebook.cn, microsoft.cn...), and whois only shows a Sponsering registrar which doesn't seem to be offering domains registration services directly to consumers: $ whois facebook.cn Domain Name: facebook.cn ROID: 20050304s10001s04039518-cn Domain Status: ok Registrant ID: tuv3ldreit6px8c7 Registrant Organization: Facebook Inc. Registrant Name: Facebook, Inc. Registrant Email: [email protected] Sponsoring Registrar: Tucows, Inc. http://www.tucowsdomains.com/ only seems to offer domain-related help but not registration. $ whois microsoft.cn Domain Name: microsoft.cn ROID: 20030312s10001s00043473-cn Domain Status: clientDeleteProhibited Domain Status: clientUpdateProhibited Domain Status: clientTransferProhibited Registrant ID: mmr-44297 Registrant Organization: Microsoft Corporation Registrant Name: Domain Administrator Registrant Email: [email protected] Sponsoring Registrar: MarkMonitor, Inc. https://www.markmonitor.com/ seems to offer registration but only to "big" customers, and definitely not to consumers like me via a web portal. Q: How do big companies register their .cn domains? How consumers like us should do it?

  • How can I assign actions to all my mouse buttons?

    - by Torben Gundtofte-Bruun
I have a mouse with lots of buttons, but it's not a mainstream make like Logitech. For Windows, I have a driver that lets me assign actions like close-window (Ctrl+W) or next-tab (Ctrl+Tab), but I don't have a Linux driver. Since Linux is so flexible, I thought perhaps there is a general way to do this, regardless of brand? Update: Based on input from Cyrex, I installed and ran sudo apt-get install btnx which found several but not all mouse buttons. Found: left, right, wheel, wheelclick, thumb fwd, thumb back. Not found: wheel left, wheel right, thumb middle button. Vendor ID is 0x04d9, Model ID is 0xa015. Update 2: In SystemPrefsMouse there's a lightbulb icon for testing double-click speed. Every working button can turn the bulb on&off, but the missing buttons can't. It would seem that Ubuntu isn't aware of these buttons and thus doesn't register their clicks. I guess I need to hunt for a driver, though a mainstream mouse is probably the easier way.

  • Pause and Resume and get the value of a countdown timer by savedInstanceState [closed]

    - by Catherine grace Balauro
    I have developed a countdown timer and I am not sure how to pause and resume the timer as the TextView for the timer is being clicked. Click to start then click again to pause and to resume, click again the timer's text view. This is my code: Timer = (TextView)this.findViewById(R.id.time); //TIMER Timer.setOnClickListener(TimerClickListener); counter = new MyCount(600000, 1000); }//end of create private OnClickListener TimerClickListener = new OnClickListener() { public void onClick(View v) { updateTimeTask(); } private void updateTimeTask() { if (decision==0){ counter.start(); decision=1;} else if(decision==2){ counter.onResume1(); decision=1; } else{ counter.onPause1(); decision=2; }//end if }; }; class MyCount extends CountDownTimer { public MyCount(long millisInFuture, long countDownInterval) { super(millisInFuture, countDownInterval); }//MyCount public void onResume1(){ onResume(); } public void onPause1() { onPause();} public void onFinish() { Timer.setText("00:00"); p1++; if (p1<=4){ TextView PScore = (TextView) findViewById(R.id.pscore); PScore.setText(p1 + ""); }//end if }//finish public void onTick(long millisUntilFinished) { Integer milisec = new Integer(new Double(millisUntilFinished).intValue()); Integer cd_secs = milisec / 1000; Integer minutes = (cd_secs % 3600) / 60; Integer seconds = (cd_secs % 3600) % 60; Timer.setText(String.format("%02d", minutes) + ":" + String.format("%02d", seconds)); //long timeLeft = millisUntilFinished / 1000; }//on tick }//class MyCount protected void onResume() { super.onResume(); //handler.removeCallbacks(updateTimeTask); //handler.postDelayed(updateTimeTask, 1000); }//onResume @Override protected void onPause() { super.onPause(); //do stuff }//onPause I am only beginner in android programming and I don't know how to get the value of the countdown timer using savedInstanceState. How do I do this?

  • How To Check If a Transaction Related to Oracle Asset Tracking Has Been Accounted in SLA

    - by LuciaC-Oracle
In Oracle Asset Tracking (OAT), we often see situations where a pending transaction has failed to be processed by the OAT programs. Typical situations can be: a pending transaction errors with "Unable to derive accounts from sub ledger accounting for the material transaction" a transaction is not picked by OAT programs. The Create Accounting program log file will show error messages and possible corrective actions to solve the error.  But as this is usually a scheduled program, often any errors that are reported are missed by users. To aid OAT users to identify if a transaction has failed and accounting has not been created, we have now created a SQL script which can be run for any pending transaction: How To Check If a Transaction Related to Oracle Asset Tracking Has Been Accounted in SLA ? (Doc ID 1673414.1)Using the script in this note, the user can pass the material transaction ID for the related transaction and the script will check if SLA accounting entries have been created for this specific transaction or not.If the SLA accounting entries have not been created, the script will prompt the user to run Create Accounting program.  After Create Accounting has been run, the user can run the script again to confirm that accounting has been created.

  • Wireless doesn't work after installing 11.10

I just did a fresh install of 11.10 32 bit and I can't get my wireless to work. I installed the drivers the Broadcom STA wireless drivers through additional drivers and rebooted, but it still doesn't see any wireless networks Did something change in 11.10 that makes the wireless card not work anymore? • SD Card only mounted after a reboot

    - by hattenn
I have a Kingston 2GB MicroSD and I plug it in via an inconix MicroSD Adapter to the internal card reader of my Samsung N210 Netbook with Ubuntu 10.10, but it doesn't show up. Only if I reboot the system when the card's plugged in it shows up. Why does it need a reboot for mounting? sudo fdisk -l gives the output below. But I can only see the drive when I reboot the computer while the card's plugged. • Best way to setup multiple sites' emails in my Gmail

    - by John
I've a dozen sites and I want all of their emails come to my one gmail id and I want to reply centrally from Gmail only. I've also added all of those emails in "send email as:" list in Gmail. I could add email forwarders in my Cpanel but in that case I'll not be able to send email whose inboxes haven't been created( for example [email protected]). If I create email account then I'd receive emails in my inbox as well as forwared by the forwarder( to my gmail id). Otherwise I can setup Gmail for my domain. But for a dozen emails I'm not sure if that'd be fine. I see in http://www.google.com/enterprise/apps/business/pricing.html that for up to 10 emails it is free. But then to send email from webhosting the php code will need SMTP login details and leaving my important gmail account details in my webhosting account is very risky given my sites have been compromised twice. What is the best way to centralize all my emails so that I can read/reply/search from single place?
