  • How to separate model and view with Core Data?

    - by andrewebling
I have a subclass of UIView which draws itself based on data held in a corresponding model class, which is a subclass of NSManagedObject. The problem is, some fields in the data model (e.g. the position of the view) are already held in the view (i.e. the frame property in this case). I then have a data duplication/synchronization problem to solve. To complicate matters further, the view needs to update in response to changes made to the data model and the data model needs to be updated in responses made to the view (e.g. the user dragging it to a new location). What's the best way to solve this? Using KVO and references in both directions? Or is there a better approach?

  • iOS Development: Why isn't my try block catching the exception?

    - by BeachRunnerJoe
Hi. I have an exception being thrown in my code, but when I wrap it in an try/catch block, it doesn't get caught. The NSLog statement is never called in the catch block. Here's the code... NSInteger quoteLength; [data getBytes:(void *)&quoteLength range:NSMakeRange(sizeof(messageType), sizeof(quoteLength))]; @try { //Debugger stack trace shows an NSException being thrown on this statement NSData *stringData = [data subdataWithRange:NSMakeRange(sizeof(messageType) + sizeof(quoteLength), [data length])]; NSString *quote = [[NSString alloc] initWithData:stringData encoding:NSUTF8StringEncoding]; NSLog(@"received quote: %@",quote); [quote release]; } @catch (NSException * e) { NSLog(@"Exception Raised: %@", [e reason]); } Why doesn't it get caught? Thanks so much!

  • Reranging a uitableview

    - by Nicolay
Hallo @ All I ran into the same problem as desciped in http://stackoverflow.com/questions/1884491/crashing-while-trying-to-move-uitableview-rows! All I want to do is on specific reranging operations insert a new cell or delet the selected one! Sometimes I get a * Assertion failure in -[_UITableViewUpdateSupport _setupAnimationForReorderingRow], /SourceCache/UIKit/UIKit-963.10/UITableViewSupport.m:295 Attempt to create two animations for cell exception and when I want to reload my data by calling [self.tableView reloadData] I get a * Terminating app due to uncaught exception 'NSRangeException', reason: '* -[NSCFArray objectAtIndex:]: index (0) beyond bounds (0)' This is quiet anoying! Is there anybody out there who knows how to handle this problem? Please help me!

  • Moving UITableView cells and maintaining consistent data

    - by Mark F
I've enabled editing mode and moving cells around to allow users to position table view content in the order they please. I'm using Core Data as the data source, which sorts the content by the attribute "userOrder". When content is first inserted, userOrder is set to a random value. The idea is that when the user moves a cell around, the userOrder of that cell changes to accomodate its new position. The following are problems I am running into while trying to accomplish this: Successfully saving the the new location of the cell and adjusting all changed locations of influenced cells. Getting the data to be consistent. For example, the TableView handles the movement fine, but when i click on the new location of the cell, it displays data for the old cell that used to be that location. Data of all influenced cells gets messed up as well. I know I have to implement this in: - (void)tableView:(UITableView *)tableView moveRowAtIndexPath:(NSIndexPath *)sourceIndexPath toIndexPath:(NSIndexPath *)destinationIndexPath {} I just don't know how. The apple docs are not particularly helpful if you are using Core Data, as in my situation. Any guidance greatly appreciated!

  • Invalidating UITableView contents

    - by Roman
I have an application with several UITableViewControllers. Now, the user is allowed to change "Data source". In that case I need to invalidate (reset) data in the relevant UITableViews. I figured out, that I can use NSNotificationCenter and add these controllers as observers to events which will be generated when the data source changes. The question is, how do I reset the underlying tables? I can, of course, set some boolean flag, and call UITableView:reloadData in viewWillAppear or viewDidAppear, but I was wondering, if there's a cleaner way of doing it. Or perhaps I'm completely missing the point, and I don't need NSNotificationCenter altogether. Thank you very much in advance.

  • Why do they initialize pointers this way?

    - by Rob
In almost all of the books I read and examples I go through I see pointers initialized this way. Say that I have a class variable NSString *myString that I want to initialize. I will almost always see that done this way: -(id)init { if (self = [super init]) { NSString *tempString = [[NSString alloc] init]; myString = tempString; [tempString release]; } return self; } Why can't I just do the following? -(id)init { if (self = [super init]) { myString = [[NSString alloc] init]; } return self; } I don't see why the extra tempString is ever needed in the first place, but I could be missing something here with memory management. Is the way I want to do things acceptable or will it cause some kind of leak? I have read the Memory Management Guide on developer.apple.com and unless I am just missing something, I don't see the difference.

  • Is there a simple way to let a layer throw an smooth shadow?

    - by mystify
I was drawing a path into a layer. Lets say I can't access that drawing code in any way, because it comes from a compiled lib. Now I want to let that layer throw a shadow which matches the shape of its irregular content shape. Is there an easy way to do it? Or must I draw like 20 of those layers and scale them up on every iteration, adjusting their alpha and letting the GPU do the extraordinarily heavy compositing?

  • How to make a section header with an non-rectangular shape without ugly underflow?

    - by mystify
I made an custom UITableView. Then I made a custom header for sections. It has round corners. But unfortunately, the rows of the section are visible in those round corners when the header floats over them. I could just make a background color so the corners are not transparent. But that is not a solution since my whole table has a background image and the section header can move. Is there any way to get the clipping region for the rows a little bit more downwards? I mean: They should not appear under that section header.

  • Using a Data Management Singleton

    - by Dan Ray
Here's my singleton code (pretty much boilerplate): @interface DataManager : NSObject { NSMutableArray *eventList; } @property (nonatomic, retain) NSMutableArray *eventList; +(DataManager*)sharedDataManager; @end And then the .m: #import "DataManager.h" static DataManager *singletonDataManager = nil; @implementation DataManager @synthesize eventList; +(DataManager*)sharedDataManager { @synchronized(self) { if (!singletonDataManager) { singletonDataManager = [[DataManager alloc] init]; } } NSLog(@"Pulling a copy of shared manager."); return singletonDataManager; } So then in my AppDelegate, I load some stuff before launching my first view: NSMutableArray *eventList = [DataManager sharedDataManager].eventList; .... NSLog(@"Adding event %@ to eventList", event.title); [eventList addObject:event]; NSLog(@"eventList now has %d members", [eventList count]); [event release]; As you can see, I've peppered the code with NSLog love notes to myself. The output to the Log reads like: 2010-05-10 09:08:53.355 MyApp[2037:207] Adding event Woofstock Music Festival to eventList 2010-05-10 09:08:53.355 MyApp[2037:207] eventList now has 0 members 2010-05-10 09:08:53.411 MyApp[2037:207] Adding event Test Event for Staging to eventList 2010-05-10 09:08:53.411 MyApp[2037:207] eventList now has 0 members 2010-05-10 09:08:53.467 MyApp[2037:207] Adding event Montgomery Event to eventList 2010-05-10 09:08:53.467 MyApp[2037:207] eventList now has 0 members 2010-05-10 09:08:53.524 MyApp[2037:207] Adding event Alamance County Event For June to eventList 2010-05-10 09:08:53.524 MyApp[2037:207] eventList now has 0 members ... What gives? I have no errors getting to my eventList NSMutableArray. But I addObject: fails silently?

  • Validation for textfield is not working

    - by MaheshBabu
Hi folks, I am using 4 Textfields in my application. I need to validate those textfields like,These 4 textfields Allow only o,1,....9 and . For that i use the code like this. - (BOOL)textField:(UITextField *)textField shouldChangeCharactersInRange:(NSRange)range replacementString:(NSString *)string { static NSCharacterSet *charSet = nil; if(!charSet) { charSet = [[[NSCharacterSet characterSetWithCharactersInString:@"0123456789."] invertedSet] retain]; } NSRange location = [string rangeOfCharacterFromSet:charSet]; return (location.location == NSNotFound); And first textfield allows digits 10,second third and fourth textfields allows less than 100. For that my code is if (textField.tag == 1) { NSString *newString = [textField.text stringByReplacingCharactersInRange:range withString:string]; double homevaluedouble = [newString doubleValue]; return !(homevaluedouble > 10000000000); } if (textField.tag == 2) { NSString *newString = [textField.text stringByReplacingCharactersInRange:range withString:string]; double validate = [newString doubleValue]; return !(validate > 100); } if (textField.tag == 3) { NSString *newString = [textField.text stringByReplacingCharactersInRange:range withString:string]; double validate = [newString doubleValue]; return !(validate > 100); } I write this code in - (BOOL)textField:(UITextField *)textField shouldChangeCharactersInRange:(NSRange)range replacementString:(NSString *)string { But textfields allows 0,1,..9 and . but digit limit is not working, if i remove 0,1,...9 then limit to textfield working. i am getting confuse with it. can any one pls help me,How can i resolve it. • Fastest way to get array of NSRange objects for all uppercase letters in an NSString?

    - by Bama91
I need NSRange objects for the position of each uppercase letter in a given NSString for input into a method for a custom attributed string class.  There are of course quite a few ways to accomplish this such as rangeOfString:options: with NSRegularExpressionSearch or using RegexKitLite to get each match separately while walking the string.  What would be the fastest performing approach to accomplish this task?

  • What does that +0100 value mean in NSDate?

    - by mystify
When I look at an NSDate value in the debugger, I get something like this: 1.4.2010 22:01:47 +0100 I don't get it what this +0100 is good for. Sometimes it is +0200. Is that supposed to be the time zone or something like that? What's it exactly? How does it affect the "since reference date" value?

  • Problem with accessing classes from another class.

    - by srikanth rongali
I have a classA, classB,classC. I have another class classABC; All are CCLayer inherited. I need to call all the classA, classB, classC from classABC. #import <Foundation/Foundation.h> #import "cocos2d.h" @interface classABC : CCLayer { classA *aClass; } @property(nonatomic, retain)classA *aClass; @end #import "classABC" #import "classA.h" #import "classB.h" #import "classC.h" @implementation classABC -(id)init { if( (self = [super init]) ) { ClassA *aClass = [[ClassA alloc]init]; CCScene *aClassS = [CCScene node]; CCLayer * aClassL = [aClass node]; [aClassS addChild: aClassL]; [[CCDirector sharedDirector] setAnimationInterval:60.0/60]; [[CCDirector sharedDirector] replaceScene: aClass]; } return self; } @end But I am not getting the classA displayed. How should I do it ? Thank You.
