  • Reverse engineering and redistributing code from .NET Framework

    Once or twice I have been running into the following issue: Classes I want to reuse in my applications (and possibly redistribute) exist in the .NET Framework assemblies, but are marked internal or private. So it is impossible to reuse them directly. One way is to disassemble them, pick the pieces you need, put them in a different namespace, recompile (this can be some effort, but usually works quite well). My question is: Is this legal? Is this only legal for the classes of the Framework which are available as source code anyway? Is it illegal? I think that Microsoft marks them internal or private primarily so that they don't have to support them or can change the interfaces later. But some pieces - be it SharePoint or WCF - are almost impossible to properly extend by only using public classes from the apis. And rewriting everything from scratch generates a huge amount of effort, before you even start solving the problem you intended to solve. This is in my eyes not a "dirty" approach per se. The classes Microsoft ships are obviously well tested, if I reuse them under a different namespace I have "control" over them. If Microsoft changes the original implementation, my code won't be affected (some internals in WCF changed quite a bit with v4). It is not a super-clean approach. I would much prefer Microsoft making several classes public, because there are some nice classes hidden inside the framework.

  • HTML5 on iPhone Safari - data stored by localStorage does not always persist. Why?

    Hi, I write a simple iPhone web app using HTML5's localStorage. Tests on a 2G device show that data stored using localStorage does not persist after the Safari process is killed although the opened Safari windows are remembered. The data is also lost in a case where I am on a different site on a different Safari window, then I change the window to where the web app in subject is shown. When Safari loads the page it automatically refreshes the page. Then the data is lost. This is a simple test code: <html> <head> <meta name="viewport" content="height=device-height, width=device-width, initial-scale=1.0, maximum-scale=1.0, user-scalable=no" /> </head> <body> <script> alert("1:" + localStorage.getItem("test")); localStorage.setItem("test", "123"); alert("2:" + localStorage.getItem("test")); </script> </body> As far as I understand the data should persist!   • Unable to write to a text file

    Hello, I am running some tests and need to write to a file. When I run the test's the open = (file, 'r+') does not write to the file. The test script is below: class GetDetailsIP(TestGet): def runTest(self): self.category = ['PTZ'] try: # This run's and return's a value result = self.client.service.Get(self.category) mylogfile = open("test.txt", "r+") print >>mylogfile, result result = ("".join(mylogfile.readlines()[2])) result = str(result.split(':')[1].lstrip("//").split("/")[0]) mylogfile.close() except suds.WebFault, e: assert False except Exception, e: pass finally: if 'result' in locals(): self.assertEquals(result, self.camera_ip) else: assert False When this test run's, no value has been entered into the text file and a value is returned in the variable result. I havw also tried mylogfile.write(result). If the file does not exist is claim's the file does not exist and doesn't create one. Could this be a permission problem where python is not allowed to create a file? I have made sure that all other read's to this file are closed so I the file should not be locked. Can anyone offer any suggestion why this is happening? Thanks

    I've saved a response from an outside server to a text file, so I don't need to keep running connection requests. Instead, perhaps I can use the text file for my manipulation purposes, until I'm read for re-connecting again. Since this is a text file, and I want to pretend this is the actual outside server (sending me the same info), how do I make it a real array again?     Say I'm trying to test a simple Set class public IntSet : IEnumerable<int> { Add(int i) {...} //IEnumerable implementation... } And suppose I'm trying to test that no duplicate values can exist in the set. Granted, testing for expected conditions generically covers more cases - but it becomes very similar to implementing the logic again (which is both tedious and useless - you can't use the same code to check itself!). Basically I'm asking whether my tests should look like "insert 1, 2, 3 then check something about 3" or "insert 1, 2, 3 and check for something in general" EDIT - To help me understand, please state in your answer if you prefer OPTION 1 or OPTION 2 (or neither, or that it depends on the case, etc )

  • WCF hosting: Can access svc file but cannot go to wsdl link

    Hello, I have a WCF service that is hosted in IIS 7.5. I have two servers, one for test and one for production. The service works fine on test server, but on the production server I have the following error. When I access the address http//..../service.svc I can see the default page that says: You have created a service. To test this service, you will need to create a client and use it to call the service. You can do this using the svcutil.exe tool from the command line with the following syntax: svcutil.exe http://..../service.svc?wsdl This will generate a configuration file and a code file that contains the client class. Add the two files to your client application and use the generated client class to call the Service. But when I click the wsdl link, I cannot go to the wsdl page. It returns me to this default web page without any errors. I am suspecting a network/firewall authorization error but does anybody have an experience like this one? All IIS settings are the same for test and production servers. Thank you, Best Regards.

  • Problem with using Jquery.ajax over .load on Zend

    Right now, what i'm trying to do is to replace a label on the front page with a block of html. Right now, the page basically has: <label id="replace"></label> the js currently has: $(document).ready(function(){ $("#replace").load('/test'); }); the Zend class function has: public function indexAction(){ $this->_helper->layout()->disableLayout(); $this->_view->message = "This is from TestController index"; } and finally the index.phtml template simply has: <?php echo $this->message;?> Right now, I want to change the code around so that instead of just replacing that label with the same message, it would do a POST where the function will pull out a parameter, do something (like for instance, go to the database and pull something out with the POST parameter) and then return the message. I've tried editing the js so that it would look like: $.post('/test', {param : "test_param"}, function(data) {$("#replace").html(data);}); or $.ajax({ type: 'POST', url: '/test', data: "{param:test_param}", contentType: "application/json; charset=utf-8", dataType: "json", success: function(data) {$("#replace").html(data);} }); and neither worked. I took a step back and tried to replicate the .load functionality and do: $.ajax({ url: '/test', success: function(data) { $('#replace').html(data); alert('Load was performed.'); } }); and it doesn't work either. Anyone have any tips on how to go about doing this?

  • How to setup and teardown temporary django db for unit testing?

    I would like to have a python module containing some unit tests that I can pass to hg bisect --command. The unit tests are testing some functionality of a django app, but I don't think I can use hg bisect --command manage.py test mytestapp because mytestapp would have to be enabled in settings.py, and the edits to settings.py would be clobbered when hg bisect updates the working directory.   • calling constructor of the class in the destructor of the same class

    Experts !! I know this question is one of the lousy one , but still I dared to open my mind , hoping I would learn from all. I was trying some examples as part of my routine and did this horrible thing, I called the constructor of the class from destructor of the same class. I don't really know if this is ever required in real programming , I cant think of any real time scenarios where we really need to call functions/CTOR in our destructor. Usually , destructor is meant for cleaning up. If my understanding is correct, why the compiler doesn't complain ? Is this because it is valid for some good reasons ? If so what are they ?     I get a "null reference" exception in the following line: MoleRuntime.SetMolePublicInstance(stub, receiverType, objReceiver, name, null); The program builds and compiles correctly. There are no complaints about any of the parameters to the method.   • trouble with custom 'Text Bubble' component (examples included)

    I'm trying to use a custom Text component to show a series of comments. I got the original idea from: http://www.eonflex.com/?p=40 I've got the base case working but I am stuck with 2 problems I cant seem to figure out: Since I am drawing around the text, the actual height of each bubble is greater than that of the Text field, as a result, the last bubble is always chopped off. I have tried explicitly overriding the height getter, and adding some padding, but I cant seem to get it right. The first vbox shows a form where the user can enter a comment, and the second box has all the comments. In order to ensure that the scrollbars only show up on the second box, I set minHeight="0" on the nested VBox, but then for some reason, some comments' text is shifted to the right.   • VB.NET CInt(Long) behaving differently in 32- and 64-bit environments

The problem is that my code was always working in 32-bit environments, but when I try THE SAME executable in a 64-bit computer it crashes with a System.OverflowException exception.   • python interactive mode module import issue

    I believe I have what would be called a scope issue, perhaps name space. Not too sure I'm new to python. I'm trying to make a module that will search through a list using regular expressions. I'm sure there is a better way of doing it but this error that I'm getting is bugging me and I want to understand why. here's my code: class relist(list): def __init__(self, l): list.__init__(self, l) def __getitem__(self, rexp): r = re.compile(rexp) res = filter(r.match, self) return res if __name__ == '__main__': import re listl = [x+y for x in 'test string' for y in 'another string for testing'] print(listl) test = relist(listl) print('----------------------------------') print(test['[s.]']) When I run this code through the command line it works the way I expect it to; however when I run it through python interactive mode I get the error >>> test['[s.]'] Traceback (most recent call last): File "<stdin>", line 1, in <module> File "relist.py", line 8, in __getitem__ r = re.compile(rexp) NameError: global name 're' is not defined While in the interactive mode I do import re and I am able to use the re functions, but for some reason when I'm trying to execute the module it doesn't work. Do I need to import re into the scope of the class? I wouldn't think so because doesn't python search through other scopes if it's not found in the current one? I appreciate your help, and if there is a better way of doing this search I would be interested in knowing. Thanks

  • Creating mock Objects in PHP unit

    Hi, I've searched but can't quite find what I'm looking for and the manual isn't much help in this respect. I'm fairly new to unit testing, so not sure if I'm on the right track at all. Anyway, onto the question. I have a class: <?php class testClass { public function doSomething($array_of_stuff) { return AnotherClass::returnRandomElement($array_of_stuff); } } ?> Now, clearly I want the AnotherClass::returnRandomElement($array_of_stuff); to return the same thing every time. My question is, in my unit test, how do I mockup this object? I've tried adding the AnotherClass to the top of the test file, but when I want to test AnotherClass I get the "Cannot redeclare class" error. I think I understand factory classes, but I'm not sure how I would apply that in this instance. Would I need to write an entirely seperate AnotherClass class which contained test data and then use the Factory class to load that instead of the real AnotherClass? Or is using the Factory pattern just a red herring.     I started to do some research on how terminate a multithreaded application properly and I found those 2 post(first, second) about how to use QueueUserAPC to signal other threads to terminate. I thought I should give it a try, and the application keeps crashing when I throw the exception from the APCProc. I use mingw for compilation and my OS is 64bit. Can this be the reason?I read that you shouldn't call QueueApcProc from a 32bit app for a thread which runs in a 64bit process or vice versa, but this shouldn't be the case.

  • fopen() fails to open stream: permission denied, yet permissions should be valid

    So, I have this error: Warning: fopen(/path/to/test-in.txt) [function.fopen]: failed to open stream: Permission denied Performing ls -l in the directory where test-in.txt is produces the following output: -rw-r--r-- 1 $USER $USER 1921 Sep 6 20:09 test-in.txt -rw-r--r-- 1 $USER $USER 0 Sep 6 20:08 test-out.txt In order to get past this, I decided to perform the following: chgrp -R www-data /path/to/php/webroot And then did: chmod g+rw /path/to/php/webroot Yet, I still get this error when I run my php5 script to open the file. Why is this happening? I've tried this using LAMP as well as cherokee through CGI, so it can't be this. Is there a solution of some sort? Edit I'll also add that I'm just developing via localhost right now. Update - PHP fopen() line $fullpath = $this->fileRoot . $this->fileInData['fileName']; $file_ptr = fopen( $fullpath, 'r+' ); I should also mention I'd like to stick with Cherokee if possible. What's this deal about setting file permissions for Apache/Cherokee?

  • What's a good way to do testing a plug-in on multiple Windows and Outlook versions?

    Hello, We're building a plug-in for Outlook that should work on multiple Windows versions (XP, Vista, 7) and also with different Outlook versions (2003, 2007, 2010). The testing problem I am facing right now, is that I can't figure out a good/convenient/thorough way to test the application on multiple Windows and Outlook versions. At the moment, I have a VirtualBox which runs many virtual machines, with different Windows versions and Outlook versions. So I would have a virtual machine with Windows 7 testing Outlook 2010, and another one with Windows 7 testing Outlook 2007, Windows Vista with Outlook 2010 and so on, going through some of the possible combinations. It kind of gets the job done, although it is cumbersome and takes a long time to test. Some of the testing included in the application is unit testing, but this is also rather tied in with the machine I test it on (windows 7 with outlook 2010). For example, I was using ManagementObject recently, which worked fine on my system (and thus passed the unit test for that method), however, using that object threw an exception in another person's system, which crashed the application. I work on Visual Studio 2010 Ultimate. The questions: Is there a more elegant way to make the testing process more streamline and more efficient? Any other testing methods you recommend? How would you deal with this problem? Thanks! Looking forward to your replies.

    I have a table that contains some meta data in an XML field. For example <Meta> <From>[email protected]</From> <To> <Address>[email protected]</Address> <Address>[email protected]</Address> </To> <Subject>ESubject Goes Here</Subject> </Meta> I want to then be able to query this field to return the following results From To Subject [email protected] [email protected] Subject Goes Here [email protected] [email protected] Subject Goes Here I've written the following query SELECT MetaData.query('data(/Meta/From)') AS [From], MetaData.query('data(/Meta/To/Address)') AS [To], MetaData.query('data(/Meta/Subject)') AS [Subject] FROM Documents However this only returns one record for that XML field. It combines both the 2 addresses into one result. Is it possible for split these on to separate records?   • Eclipse Ant Builder problem

    I made a custom ant script to automatically create a jar file each time I do a build. This is how it looks like: <?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?> <project name="TestProj" basedir="." default="jar"> <property name="dist" value="dist" /> <property name="build" value="bin/test/testproj" /> <target name="jar"> <jar destfile="${dist}/TestProj.jar"> <manifest> <attribute name="Main-Class" value="test.testproj.TestProj" /> </manifest> <fileset dir="${build}" /> </jar> </target> </project> I added it by Right clicking my project properties builders clicked new Ant builder then I specified the location of the above xml file. However, when I run it by doing: java -jar TestProj.jar I get a NoClassDefFoundError test/testproj/TestProj I'm using Eclipse in Ubuntu. TestProj is the name of the class and it's in package test.testproj I'm pretty sure there's something wrong with the manifest and probably the location of the xml file as well but I'm not sure how to fix this. Any ideas?
