• Oracle Database 12c By Example – SQL Developer and Multitenant

  As you may have heard, Oracle Database 12c is now available. In addition to the binaries and docs going out, we also published a few new Oracle By Example (OBE) chapters. You can find those links here on our product page. Do you know who found these, practically the minute they were published? An enterprising DBA-extraordinaire who was just happening to be presenting at the ODTUG KScope13 conference in New Orleans. He thought it would be a good idea to download the new software over a hotel WIFI, install and create a new multitenant database, watch a few OBEs, and then demo that live for his ‘SQL Developer for DBAs‘ session. Pretty crazy, right? Well, he did it, and I was there to watch. Way cool. You can listen to @leight0nn tell his story in his own words via this ODTUG interview with @oraclenered. In case you’re too giddy to sit through the video, I’ll give you a preview – he succesfully cloned a pluggable database in about a minute with only a couple of clicks using Oracle SQL Developer 3.2.20.09 while connected to a 12c database.

• How do I stop my ethernet network connection from dropping?

  My ethernet-based network connection doesn't stay up consistently. I'm running a ping against the gateway and it will: Work for a minute Freeze, time out, or give multi-second response times Repeat If it's stuck and I disable/enable networking through the network manager applet everything will work fine again for a minute. After 280 packets transmitted I'm getting 41% packet loss. I've tried a different cable and connection to the gateway but this had no effect. The distance to the gateway is just about 3 feet. Seems to work fine if I switch over to Windows, but Ubuntu is my main OS and I can't even use it right now as I depend on the network. My setup... OS: Ubuntu 11.04, dual-booting Windows 7 Mobo: Gigabyte Z68X-UD4-B3 CPU: Intel Core i7 2600K Edit A little clarification... Network Manager is still showing me as connected, but I am unable to reach to gateway or anything beyond. At no point does NM suggest the connection is lost and calling ifconfig shows that I still have an IP address. • "Accumulate" buffer results in XNA4?

  I'm trying to simulate a "heightmap" buffer in XNA4.0 but the results don't look correct. Here's what I'm hoping to achieve: http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_detailpage&v=-Q6ISVaM5Ww#t=517s (8:38). From what I understand, here are the steps to reach there: Pass height buffer + current entity's heightmap Generate a stencil and update the height buffer Render sprite+stencil For now, I'm just trying to get the height buffer thing to work. So here's the problem. Inside the draw loop, I do the following: Create a new render target & set it Draw the heightmap with a sprite batch(no shaders) graphicsDevice.SetRenderTarget(null) Draw the rendertarget with SpriteBatch I expected to see all entities' heightmaps. But only the last entity's heightmap is visible. Any hints on what I'm doing wrong? • Reflecting on 2010 and Looking into 2011

  In early 2010, I had blogged and shared my excitement as I was about to embark on a new journey relocating to South Florida.     As I settled down and adjusted to my new life, I was presented with an opportunity to get actively involved and volunteer in the local Florida .Net and Project Management communities.  I have since devoted a significant portion of my time to community initiatives, coordinating the West Palm Beach .Net User Group, volunteering as a member of the INETA Speaker’s Bureau and traveling to attend/speak at .Net code camps and user groups throughout the states of Florida and New York. I have also taken on various volunteer roles at the South Florida Chapter of the Project Management Institute starting as core team member on the chapter’s mentoring initiative and ending the year as Project Manager of the chapter’s mentoring program and as Director of Electronic Communications on the chapter’s IT team. I am also serving a one year term (2010-2011) as secretary and founding board member of Florida’s first official chapter of the International Association for Software Architects (IASA).   A big thank you is due for those who afforded me the opportunity and privilege to take part of these initiatives and those who provided guidance and encouragement when I needed them the most.   Looking ahead into 2011, I hope to continue my community involvement and volunteer activities. I will start by dedicating the first 5 weekends in the New Year to teach a free comprehensive Microsoft PowerPoint class at church. My goal will be to start from scratch and slowly cover the various available PowerPoint features that can be leveraged to create captivating presentations. • Cropping a line (laser beam) in XNA

  I have a laser sprite that I wish to crop. I want to crop it so when it collides with an item, I can calculate the distance between the starting point, and the ending point, and only draw that. This eliminates the "overdraw" of a laser drawing past an item. Essentially, I'm trying to crop a line, but also keep that line "attached" to the nose of my ship. The line should not be drawn past the nose of my ship, that should be the starting point. There is no rotation to worry about. Currently, I thought that doing this through SpriteBatch would be best. This is my current Spritebatch code: spriteBatch.Draw(Laser.sprite, new Rectangle((int)Laser.position.X, (int)Laser.position.Y, Laser.sprite.Width, LaserHeight), new Rectangle(0, 0, (int)(Laser.sprite.Width), LaserHeight), new Color(255, 255, 255, (byte)MathHelper.Clamp(Laser.Alpha, 0, 255)), Laser.rotation, new Vector2(Laser.sprite.Width/2, LaserHeight/2), SpriteEffects.None, 0); But this doesn't quite work. It does only draw part of the sprite, but when LaserHeight is incremented, it lengthens the line in both ways! I believe this is due to some stupid error on my part with the Origin of the draw. Quick recap: I need to have my laser sprite drawn with the bottom of it at the nose of my ship, and then use LaserHeight to crop the image so only part of it is drawn. • How to account for speed of the vehicle when shooting shells from it?

  I'm developing a simple 3D ship game using libgdx and bullet. When a user taps the mouse I create a new shell object and send it in the direction of the mouse click. However, if the user has tapped the mouse in the direction where the ship is currently moving, the ship catches up to the shells very quickly and can sometimes even get hit by them - simply because the speed of shells and the ship are quite comparable. • Mailbox move issue from Exchange 2003 to Exchange 2010

  Today while moving mailboxes between Exchange 2003 and Exchange 2010, I hit an issue with a couple of mailboxes.  These mailboxes all popped access denied errors or more exactly: Insufficient Access Rights to perform the operation.   The cause was similar to the mail flow issue in that inheritable permissions were not turned on for the user object in Active Directory.  This also presented it’s own unique problem in that since the initial move request failed because of permissions, it had to be cleared before a new move request could be created. On top of that, the request did not show up in the EMC.  I used the following process to clear the request, assign permission, then create a new request:   1. First you need to know the ExchangeGUID of the mailbox for the remove-moverequest command.  To quickly get the GUID for a mailbox simply run:         2. Next we need to clear out the move request using PowerShell by running: [PS] c:\>Remove-moverequest -moverequestqueue "mailbox database 1030639620" -mailboxguid 8525686f-d4d3-42b7-92f1-46d77ea841a3   3. Then to re-establish inheritable permissions. This can be done by using AD Users and Computers, switching to View Advanced Features, then under the Security tab of the object.  Click Advanced, then check “allow inheritable permissions of parent to propagate to this object”   4. Once the Inheritable permissions are restored, we need to create a new move request: NOTE:  The EMC can also be used to initiate the Move Request once the permissions are corrected. • Are there open source alternatives to Bitbucket, Github, Kiln, and similar DVCS browsing and management tools?

  I am aware of several tools/services that provide DVCS browsing and management such as Bitbucket, Github, Kiln, SCM-Manager and Rhodecode. However, the use case I am considering is one such that: Any source code must reside on an employers internal servers. The solution must be open source. It should provide a Bitbucket or Github like experience, including a project wiki, repository browsing and management, and social coding aspects such as code review. The solution should have mercurial support (if not support for other DVCSs). Of these, only SCM-Manager and RhodeCode come close as they can be installed on your own servers and are open source. However they do not have the Bitbucket or Github experience. There is no issue tracker or wiki and the UI, while functional, is not up to par with Github or Bitbucket. I can get close with Trac or Redmine with their repository browsers but unfortunately they do not have any repository management capabilities. Are there other open source tools out there that would provide a similar experience to Bitbucket, Github or Kiln?

• How do you keep from running into the same problems over and over?

  I keep running into the same problems. The problem is irrelevant, but the fact that I keep running into is completely frustrating. The problem only happens once every, 3-6 months or so as I stub out a new iteration of the project. I keep a journal every time, but I spend at least a day or two each iteration trying to get the issue resolved. How do you guys keep from making the same mistakes over and over? I've tried a journal but it apparently doesn't work for me. [Edit] A few more details about the issue: Each time I make a new project to hold the files, I import a particular library. The library is a C++ library which imports glew.h and glx.h GLX redefines BOOL and that's not kosher since BOOL is a keyword for ObjC. I had a fix the last time I went through this. I #ifndef the header in the library to exclude GLEW and GLX and everything worked hunky-dory. This time, however, I do the same thing, use the same #ifndef block but now it throws a bunch of errors. I go back to the old project, and it works. New project no-worky. It seems like it does this every time, and my solution to it is new each time for some reason. I know #defines and #includes are one of the trickiest areas of C++ (and cross-language with Objective-C), but I had this working and now it's not.

• Frequent Disconnects with an Intel 3945ABG Wireless Card

  I'm brand new to Ubuntu, and I really love it so far, but one issue I have encountered is that my WLAN is disconnecting about every 5-10 minutes. Often times the connection is repaired automatically, but sometimes the network manager will repeatedly reject my encryption key (which of course is correct). Occasionally after a disconnect, the wireless network fails to show up at all. The only way I can solve this seems to be by completely restarting Ubuntu or connecting with a USB wireless adapter. I am using WPA/WPA2 encryption, which I've read can cause problems with network-manager, but I experience the exact same issues with WICD. I should probably note that I've not experienced any of these issues using Windows 7 on my other partition. I have a hunch that there may be a better driver out there for my card, but I have no idea how to go about searching for it or installing it. • Two things I learned this week...

  I often say "I learn something new about Oracle every day".  It really is true - there is so much to know about it, it is hard to keep up sometimes.Here are the two new things I learned - the first is regarding temporary tablespaces.  In the past - when people have asked "how can I shrink my temporary tablespace" I've said "create a new one that is smaller, alter your database/users to use this new one by default, wait a bit, drop the old one".  Actually I usually said first - "don't, it'll just grow again" but some people really wanted to make it smaller.Now, there is an easier way:http://docs.oracle.com/cd/E11882_01/server.112/e26088/statements_3002.htm#SQLRF53578Using alter tablespace temp shrink space .The second thing is just a little sqlplus quirk that I probably knew at one point but totally forgot.  People run into problems with &'s in sqlplus all of the time as sqlplus tries to substitute in for an &variable.  So, if they try to select '&hello world' from dual - they'll get:ops$tkyte%ORA11GR2> select '&hello world' from dual;Enter value for hello: old   1: select '&hello world' from dualnew   1: select ' world' from dual'WORLD------ worldops$tkyte%ORA11GR2> One solution is to "set define off" to disable the substitution (or set define to some other character).  Another oft quoted solution is to use chr(38) - select chr(38)||'hello world' from dual.  I never liked that one personally.  Today - I was shown another wayhttps://asktom.oracle.com/pls/apex/f?p=100:11:0::::P11_QUESTION_ID:4549764300346084350#4573022300346189787 ops$tkyte%ORA11GR2> select '&' || 'hello world' from dual;'&'||'HELLOW------------&hello worldops$tkyte%ORA11GR2>just concatenate '&' to the string, sqlplus doesn't touch that one!  I like that better than chr(38) (but a little less than set define off....)

However when you get started there is small short comings and you ask your self- how can I re-use what is out of the box ca?- I wonder what code I need to use to produce the similar functions and include my new requirements?- Must I write a new taskflow? The answer to above questions are in many times answered with simply you can  do a taskflow customization to out-of-the-box taskflows. In this post I will help you understand how to do such customization. • Did 12.04 just add multi-touch gesture support mid-release?

  I was reviewing the updates I was about to download today and I noticed that a lot of them had to do with gesture support, noticed that many of these were new installs rather than upgrades. Has 12.04 just added multi-touch gesture support mid-release? If so, what are the capabilities that this adds? Which applications already support these capabilities and can I expect others to add support in the near future? Here are the packages that were installed: Install: libframe6:amd64 (2.2.4-0ubuntu0.12.04.1), libgeis1:amd64 (2.2.9.2-0ubuntu1), libgrail5:amd64 (3.0.6-0ubuntu0.12.04.01, automatic) And here are those that were upgraded (also including many with touch support): Upgrade: libgrip0:amd64 (0.3.4-0ubuntu2~ubuntu12.04.1, 0.3.5-0ubuntu1~12.04.1), eog:amd64 (3.4.2-0ubuntu1, 3.4.2-0ubuntu1.1), ginn:amd64 (0.2.4-0ubuntu1, 0.2.4.1-0ubuntu1) Of which the descriptions for the new installs are, libgeis1: Gesture engine interface support A common API for clients of a systemwide gesture recognition and propagation engine. libframe6: Touch Frame Library This library handles the buildup and synchronization of a set of simultaneous touches. • Powershell variables to string

  I'm new to powershell. I'm trying to write an error handler to wrap around my script.  Part of the error handler is dumping out some variable settings.  I spent a while trying to do this and couldn't google a complete solution so I thought I'd post something. I want to display the $myinvocation variable. It's not pretty but it works.
