• PostgreSQL 9: Does Vacuuming a table on the primary replicate on the mirror?

  Running PostgreSQL 9.0.1, with streaming replication keeping one read-only mirror instance up to date. Auto-vaccuum is on on the primary, except for a few tables which are not vacuumed by the auto-vacuum daemon, in an effort to reduce business-hour IO. These tables are "materialised views". Each night at midnight, we run a vacuum across the database in order to clean up those tables that are excluded from the auto-vacuum. I'm wondering if that process replicates across to the mirror, or if I need to set up vacuum on the mirror as well?

• Fine-tuning a LNMP stack

  I'm in the process of setting up a server with 4GB RAM and 2 CPUs. The stack will be CentOS + NGINX + MySQL + PHP (with APC) and spawn-fcgi. It will be used to serve 10 Wordpress blogs, 3 of which receive about 20,000 hits per day. Each Wordpress instance is equipped with the W3 TotalCache. I have a few variables to play with: NGINX (How many worker_processes, worker_connections, etc) PHP (What parameters in php.ini should I change? What about apc?) Spawn-fcgi (Right now I have 6 php-cgi spawned. How many of them should I have?) I realize it's hard to tell without testing, but if you could please provide me with some ballpark numbers, that would be helpful too.

• Excel 2002 disappears with no error message

  Excel 2002 closes about 30 seconds after I open it. No further action has to be taken; I open the program, wait a little while, and the window and process just disappears. I'm running Windows XP SP2 with Office 2002 Pro installed. Recently, Outlook 2007 was added to the computer (previously not installed at all.) Word 2002 works fine. Excel 2002 also works fine on another computer with a similar configuration. Things I've already checked for or tried: Verified that no add-ins are enabled. Repairing the installation. Uninstalling and reinstalling. Rename %APPDATA%\Microsoft\Excel I'm guessing that it is trying to load a component that doesn't exist and failing, but I don't know how to proceed. Suggestions welcome. Thank you!

• Update Manager won't open (error related to pythonverbose)

  I'm having an issue with update-manager. Last night, my computer restart suddenly during the update process. Now it won't open and it keep appearing on the notifier with a message warning that an error occurred. The error is the same that is displayed when I try to open it on the terminal: Error in sitecustomize; set PYTHONVERBOSE for traceback: EOFError: EOF read where not expected Traceback (most recent call last): File "/usr/bin/update-manager", line 26, in <module> from __future__ import print_function EOFError: EOF read where not expected I've already seen some questions here, but most of them are related to problems with ppas and the source.list file. This seems to be a bug on update-manager itself. I've already tried to remove it and install again, but the problem persists. I also noted another bug: my source-center doesn't open too. I have been meaning to make the short trip over from Stockholm to NDC for a few years, and this was the first time I made it. I have heard a lot of great things about the event, and was impressed with the location, the sessions, and most of all the atmosphere around the event boots and during the party on Thursday evening. The session I was delivering was my “Grid Computing with 256 Windows Azure Worker Roles & Kinect” demo, which I have delivered at many events over the past 12 months. The demo went fine. I’m always a little nervous when I try to scale out the application to 256 worker roles, it almost always works well and the application will scale in minutes, but very occasionally there can be a longer delay due to the provisioning process in the Windows Azure data centers. This would not be an issue for many scenarios, but when standing on stage in front of a room full of developers you really want things to run smoothly. A number of people have suggested that I should pre-provision an environment so that it is guaranteed to be there when I run the demo during a session. For me the aim has always been to show the rapid scalability on cloud-based platforms live on stage. Pre-provisioning an environment may make for a more reliable demo but to me that would be cheating, and not half as much fun!

• Split DC role from existing Exchange 2007 server

  We currently have a single Exchange 2007 Server on Windows Server 2008. It's also a DC and I'd like to split the DC role to a different box. Is this doable without migrating the mailboxes off to a temporary box, re-installing and migrating back? I.e. can I just demote the server without breaking Exchange completely? I know this was quite painful with Server 2003/Exchange 2003, so I'm trying to get an idea of how much different the process is for Server 2008/Exchange 2007.

• Recruiters intentionally present one good candidate for an available job

  Maybe they do it without realizing. The recruiter's goal is to fill the job as soon as possible. I even think they feel it is in their best interest that the candidate be qualified, so I'm not trying to knock recruiters. Aren't they better off presenting 3 candidates, but one clearly stands out? The last thing they want from their client is a need to extend the interview process because they can't decide. If the client doesn't like any of them, you just bring on your next good candidate. This way they hedge their bet a little. Any experience, insight or ever heard of a head-hunter admit this? Does it make sense? There has to be a reason why the choose such unqualified people. I've seen jobs posted that clearly state they want someone with a CS degree and the recruiter doesn't take it literally. I don't have a CS degree or Java experience and still they think I'm a possible fit.

• How to disconnect a running bash job from the shell in Linux?

  I have a script that starts a server on a remote VM. All works great until I close the shell where I executed the script. When the shell closes, so does the server. After some looking around I found the following: & will send the job to the background when executed with the symbol disown -h will disconnect the job from the shell and allow it to run regardless of the shell. The command I used is: ./startServer.sh nasb_wxscat160_catalog-4.1.6 1.0.8 > catalog-log.txt & disown -h When I closed the shell and checked using ps -ef | grep java to see if the job is still working I did see it in the list. However when I tried to connect to the server it was unresponsive. On deeper inspection, the log file was filled just until I closed the shell and using the ps -m flag I say the process jobs were not working. Has any one encountered some thing of this sort?

• Split a 2D scene in layers or have a z coordinate

  I am in the process of writing a 2D game engine, and a dilemma emerged. Let me explain the situation... I have a Scene class, to which various objects can be added (Drawable, ParticleEmitter, Light2D, etc), and as this is a 2D scene, things will obviously be drawn over each other. My first thought was that I could have basic add and remove methods, but I soon realized that then there would be no way for the programmer to control the order in which things were drawn. So I can up with two options, each with its pros and cons. A) Would be to split the scene in layers. By that I mean instead of having the scene be a container of objects, have it be a container of layers, which are in turn the containers of objects. B) Would require to have some kind of z-coordinate, and then have the scene sorted so objects with lower z get drawn first. Option A is pretty solid, but the problem is with the lights. In what layer do I add it? Does it work cross-layer? On all bottom layers? And I still need the Z coordinate to calculate the shadow! Option B would require me to change all my code from having Vector2D positions, to some kind of class that inherits from Vector2D and adds a z coordinate to it (I don't want it to be a Vector3D because I still need all the same methods the 2D kind has, just with .z clamped on). Am I missing something? Is there an alternative to these methods? I'm working in Javascript, if that makes a difference.

• How to get partition information from non-booting server?

  Need to manually rebuild a mirrored array on a server and am in the process of reinstalling SBS 2003 on it. However, it's a Dell server, and know that there's the Dell FAT32 diagnostics partition, a system partition, and a data partition, but do not know the size of each. Planning on reinstalling SBS 2003, all applications on the server, and then doing a System State restore, but figured that not having the correct partitions will cause some grief: am I right? Almost thinking that the size of the partitions shouldn't matter, but not positive. Question: should I care about the size of the partition? If so, how can I get this partition information from a non-booting drive? We have an Acronis image of the one working disk and the partitions are mounted/viewable in Explorer on a workstation, but I'm not sure where the Logical Disk Manager/Disk Management data is stored and/or if there's a way to retrieve it without having a working Windows installation.

• nginx: php-fastcgi running but php files not executing

  I have recently set up a nginx server with PHP running as FastCGI process. The server is running with HTML files however PHP files are downloading instead of displaying and PHP code is not processed. This is what I have in nginx.conf: server { listen 80; server_name pubserver; location ~ \.php$ { root /usr/share/nginx/html; fastcgi_pass 127.0.0.1:9000; fastcgi_index index.php; fastcgi_param SCRIPT_FILENAME /usr/share/nginx/html$fastcgi_script_name; include fastcgi_params; } } The command netstat -tulpn | grep :9000 displays the following which indicates php-fastcgi is running and listening on port 9000: tcp 0 0 127.0.0.1:9000 0.0.0.0:* LISTEN 2663/php-cgi If it's if any importance my server is running on CentOS 6 and I installed nginx and PHP using the repositories from The Fedora Project.

  Having grown up in South Florida this short, but very enlightening, video explaining how the City of Miami has implemented a 311 citizen service request system using Windows Azure, Silverlight and Bing Maps definitely caught my attention. Miami311 The Miami311 System is a Windows Azure/Silverlight-based solution which enables City of Miami citizens report and track issues reported to city management. The system uses Bing Maps to plot the location and relevant information about each issue reported. Citizens now have the ability to easily see the status of the issue without having to call the city office. What I found interesting were a couple of benefits that a metropolitan area such as Miami can take advantage of in Windows Azure cloud-based solution. For the city of Miami, both benefits center around the weather. Of course the threat of a hurricane is a real issue in South Florida and what better way to make sure your site stays up during a hurricane then to have the site hosted far away from the eye of the storm. Using a Windows Azure cloud-based architecture the City of Miami is able to host the application within the Microsoft data centers safely away from any hurricane passing through South Florida. The second benefit is the inherent scalability of a Windows Azure based solution. During a severe weather event like thunderstorms or even worse, a hurricane, downed trees and power lines are a commonly reported problem. Being able to quickly scale up the computing resources required to handle the spike in citizens reporting these types of problems on the site is a huge benefit. Once the weather event has passed and downed tree reports begin to subside they can quickly reverse the process and scale the system back down to pre-storm levels. It’s kind of day-to-day kind of stuff but very cool stuff nonetheless. Have a day. :-|

  I recently installed Ubuntu 12.04 onto my HP Pavilion, in an attempt to make the desktop able to dual-boot Windows 7 and Ubuntu. I managed to get down to the last step, and finished the installation process. After it prompted me to remove what I used to install Ubuntu, I did so, removing my SanDisk 8GB flash drive, and allowed the system to reboot. Like usual, the desktop booted with the HP image, with the options at the bottom(Boot Menu, System Recovery, etc). However, when it should have started up with Ubuntu(like I'm certain it should have done), I received the following error: Input signal out of range Change settings to 1600 x 900 From the time I installed the operating system, back in late August, till now, I've been trying to figure out how I would go about fixing this issue. My mom is also starting to get frustrated with my not having resolved the issue, as its the only desktop that has a printer installed. Is there any possible way to resolve this? To summarize the problem: -Successful boot -Screen brings up error -Screen goes to standby -Nothing else possible until desktop is rebooted, which will initiate the above three steps A few notes: -I did not back up my computer before I installed Ubuntu. I didn't have anything to write to, and basically just forgot to. : -I don't have a Recovery Disk. -I don't have the Windows 7 disk that is supposed to come with the computer. -It has been narrowed down by a friend on Skype that the problem lies with the display, and that the vga= boot command does have something to do with fixing the problem Thank you in advance for resolving this problem.   Is there any way to restore the default ownership of a CentOS filesystem after an accidental chown -R user:group /* ? Before I go and reinstall, I thought I'd ask and perhaps save some time. I'm in the process of setting up a new dev machine (thankfully not prod) and typed too fast or missed the . key or something. I tried to cancel as soon as I caught it but all my /bin /boot /dev etc had already been changed. Is there hope, or just reinstall and be happy it wasn't a production machine?

• syntax error: unknown user 'munin' in statoverride file

  Server running Ubuntu 12.04 lts I installed munin the other day on a server. I decided later to remove it with apt-get. I noticed that not everything was removed from the installation so manually removed the munin web directory and also removed the munin user-name and group from the sever. However I have just now tried to run apt-get upgrade which is now returning an error: dpkg: unrecoverable fatal error, aborting: syntax error: unknown user 'munin' in statoverride file E: Sub-process /usr/bin/dpkg returned an error code (2) I am now out of my depth. What does this mean? Google results have not really been helpful. Can anyone help? Thanks, John

• Prevent Windows 7 prompt format USB HDD

  I am running Windows 7. I have a USB HDD 100% formatted with a Trucypt partition. When I insert the drive into my system, Windows asks if I would like to format the drive, each time I insert the drive. So how do I turn this prompt off? If so, I would prefer it be applied globally (e.g. no more prompts for any other drives). Since its an invisible partition unless mounted with Trucypt, Windows is always going to think nothing is there and continue to prompt me. I don't want to hit enter on the keyboard a few times by mistake doing something else and have it to go through the process. I'll lose everything. It is all backed up BTW. Will just be inconvienient.

• IIS/SMTP - unable to move emails from inetpub/mailroot/Queue due to file lock

  I have a listener that processes emails in the inetpub/mailroot/Queue directory. Once the listener is done processing an email it proceeds to move the email to another directory. However, moving the email is not possible due to a file lock by the process inetinfo.exe. I have noticed that this file lock is released after a period time that ranges from several hours to several days. You can see that the Queue directory can get pretty full over time. The only way I have been able to work around this is by manually stopping and starting my SMTP virtual server in IIS. Is it possible to release this file lock programmatically? If not, is it possible to expedite releasing this file lock?

• Form recognition using OCR and return image of the value

  I'm on a project that process hundreds of forms. The forms have consistent formats but are filled out by hand by different people. I need a way to quickly processing all of these data into electronic forms. OCR recognition for typed document seems mature but for hand-writting is very lacking. For this thought, let's consider a form with several fields like this. Field_1: Value1 (example, Name: John, where Name is Field and John is value) Considering that forms are structured and typed, OCR should be able to recognize the fields. However, for the values of the fields, they are written and OCR will perform very poorly. So is there a way where the fields would be recognized on the imagem, then a image chunk of the value would be returned? Thanks.

• Events Driven Library XNA C#

  Language: C# w/ XNA Framework Relevant and Hopefully Helpful Background Info: I am making a library using the XNA framework for games I make with XNA. The Library has a folder(Namespace) dedication to the GUI. The GUI Controls inherit a base class hooked with the appropriate Interfaces. After a control is made, the programmer can hook the control with a "Frame" or "Module" that will tell the controls when to update and draw with an event. To make a "Frame" or "Module", you would inherit a class with the details coded in. (Kind of how win forms does it.) My reason for doing this is to simplify the process of creating menus with intractable controls. The only way I could think of for making the events for all the controls to function without being class specific would be to typecast a control to an object and typecast it back. (As I have read, this can be terribly inefficient.) Problem: Unfortunately, after I have implemented interfaces into the base classes and changed public delegate void ClickedHandler(BaseControl cntrl); to public delegate void ClickedHandler(Object cntrl, EventArgs e); my game has decreased in performance. This performance could be how I am firing the events, as what happens is the one menu will start fine, but then slowly but surely will freeze up. Every other frame works just fine, I just think it has something to do with the events and... that is why I am asking about them. Question: Is there a better more industry way of dealing with GUI Libraries other then using and implementing Events? Goal: To create a reusable feature rich XNA Control Library implementing performance enhancing standards and so on. Thank-you very much for taking your time to read this. • Reverting problems caused by checkinstall with gcc build

  I recently downloaded the GCC 4.6.2 source in order to play around a bit with C++11. Having been told about checkinstall and its usefulness in installing programs from source, I created a Debian package from the install using sudo checkinstall -D make install. Wanting to see how well the newly created package worked, I removed it using Synaptic Package Manager. As it turns out, the package checkinstall created from make install tried to remove every single file the installation process touched, including shared gcc libraries like /lib64/libgcc_s.so. Despite not being able to run a bunch of programs due to this missing dependency, I was able to restore my system back to normal by reinstalling the package from command line using dpkg. At this point I want to remove the package from the package manager since it's so dangerous, but not remove the installed files. I was looking around in /var/lib/dpkg and found that the package manager seems to be based on text files which list packages and such - can I just remove all mention of the package from the files in /var/lib/dpkg, or is there a safer way to go about this?
