• How is the "change password at next logon" requirement supposed to work with RDP using Network Level Authentication?

  We have a Windows server (2008 R2) with the "Remote Desktop Services" feature installed and no Active Directory domain. Remote desktop is set up to "Allow connections only from computers running Remote Desktop with Network Level Authentication (more secure)". This means that before the remote screen is displayed, the connection is authenticated in a "Windows Security: Enter your credentials" window. The only two role services installed on this server is the RD Session Host and Licensing. When the "User must change password at next logon" checkbox is selected in the properties for a local user on this server, the following displays on a client computer after attempting to connect using the credentials that were last valid: On some other servers using RDP for admin access (but without the Remote Desktop Services role installed), the behavior is different -- the session begins and the user is given a change password prompt on the remote screen. What do I need to do to replicate this behavior on the Remote Desktop Services server?

• Copy and Paste without needing to use the Mouse

  In previous versions of windows when your were Copying Files (Ctrl-C) then alt-Tab (to the appropriate window) and Pasting (Ctrl-V) using the Keyboard everything could be driven by the keyboard. With Vista and 7, it seems if you are copying and pasting (and the files exist) in the Destination Location you have to Click the Copy and Replace, there doesn't seem to be a way to do it... "Do this for the next {n} Conflicts" can be driven by Alt-D, but the "Copy and Replace" and "Don't Copy" are not. Or is there and have I just missed something? I'm more than happy to change registry or something to enable Keyboard shortcuts for this.

• Edirol UA-25 driver on Windows 8 Preview

  I've installed Windows 8 developer preview on a laptop and everything is working apart from my external sound card. The sound card in question is this one, and I've tried downloading and installing the Window 7 drivers from here but no joy so far. As per the instructions I remove the USB cable from the port. I then run setup.exe and (which I have set to run in Windows 7 compatibility mode). It starts doing it's stuff then says "Please insert the USB cable and wait"......that's where things stop! Nothing happens. I don't even here the "ding-dong" of the USB device being recoginised. Obviously I realise that the drivers are for windows 7 and not 8, but was hoping that someone would be able to crowbar it to work!!! Any tips appreciated. Thanks

• Debug.Assert replacement for Phone and Store apps

  I don’t know about you, but all my code is, and always has been, littered with Debug.Assert statements. I think it all started way back in my (short-lived, but impactful to me) Eiffel days, when I was applying Design by Contract. Anyway, I can’t live without Debug.Assert. Imagine my dismay when I upgraded my Windows Phone 7.x app (Translator By Moth) to Windows Phone 8 and discovered that my Debug.Assert statements would not display anything on the target and would not break in the debugger any longer! Luckily, the solution was simple and in this post I share it with you – feel free to teak it to meet your needs. Steps to use Add a new code file to your project, delete all its contents, and paste in the code from MyDebug.cs Perform a global search in your solution replacing Debug.Assert with MyDebug.Assert Build solution and test Now, I do not know why this functionality was broken, but I do know that it exhibits the same broken characteristics for Windows Store apps. There is a simple workaround there to use Contract.Assert which does display a message and offers an option to break in the debugger (although it doesn’t output the message to the Output window). Because I plan on code sharing between Phone and Windows 8 projects, I prefer to have the conditional compilation centralized, so I added the Contract.Assert workaround directly in MyDebug class, so that you can use this class for both platforms – enjoy and enhance! • How do I setup an FTP server on Windows 7?

  I'm having trouble getting an FTP server setup on Windows 7. I've added the service using Control Panel - Programs - Turn Windows features on and off. I can see the service has started in Control Panel - Services. But then when I fire up a Windows command-line window, cmd, I get Not connected., C:\Users\mattf>ftp localhost ftp> ls Not connected. ftp> open localhost ftp> ls Not connected. ftp> dir Not connected. ftp> quit C:\Users\mattf> And that's as far as I've got. I have no idea why this isn't working - could it be firewall settings?

Joe Tucci, from EMC outlined the human face of big data with real examples of how big data is transforming our world. And no not the usual tried-and-true weblog examples, but real stories about taxi cab drivers in Singapore using big data to better optimize their routes as well as folks just trying to get a better hair cut. Next we heard from Thomas Kurian who talked at length about the important platform characteristics of Oracle’s Cloud and more specifically Oracle’s expanded Cloud Services portfolio. Especially interesting to our integration customers are the messaging support for Oracle’s Cloud applications. What this means is that now Oracle’s Cloud applications have a lightweight integration fabric that on-premise applications can communicate to it via REST-APIs using Oracle SOA Suite. It’s an important element to our strategy at Oracle that supports this idea that whether your requirements are for private or public, Oracle has a solution in the Cloud for all of your applications and we give you more deployment choice than any vendor. If this wasn’t enough to get the juices flowing, later that morning we heard from Hasan Rizvi who outlined in his Fusion Middleware session the four most important enterprise imperatives: Social, Mobile, Cloud, and a brand new one: Fast Data. Today, Rizvi made an important step in the definition of this term to explain that he believes it’s a convergence of four essential technology elements: Event Processing for event filtering, business rules – with Oracle Event Processing Data Transformation and Loading - with Oracle Data Integrator Real-time replication and integration – with Oracle GoldenGate Analytics and data discovery – with Oracle Business Intelligence Each of these four elements can be considered (and architect-ed) together on a single integrated platform that can help customers integrate any type of data (structured, semi-structured) leveraging new styles of big data technologies (MapReduce, HDFS, Hive, NoSQL) to process more volume and variety of data at a faster velocity with greater results.  Fast data processing (and especially real-time) has always been our credo at Oracle with each one of these products in Fusion Middleware. • Error when starting Outlook 2007 on Windows 7

  Every time I start Outlook 2007 SP2 on my Windows 7 box Outlook will look like its loading fine, then I get this error message: cannot start microsoft office outlook. cannot open the outlook window and outlook will close. I was able to get outlook to start by using outlook.exe /resetnavpane in the Start-Search box, a nice tip which I got from this social.microsoft.com page. But it didn't fix the problem since outlook is still complaining when it starts after a reboot. What can I do to get outlook to startup normally?

• How do I totally get rid of Norton Utilities

  Alright, so I treated myself to a new computer for Christmas. Windows7 64-bit, yada yada yada. Uninstalled Norton Security using Windows7 uninstall program, installed Microsoft Security Essentials in it's place. From a cold boot, I still get the screen from Norton asking me if I wanna sign up for the free six months, which I don't. Guess Windows7 uninstall left behind some pieces. Anyone know how I can get rid of this Norton screen? EDIT: @ Revolter: Great. Used Norton Removal Tool Successfully. Now I get a different pop-up window ALWAYS reminding me if I want to activate Norton Online Backup. What does one have to do to FINALLY get rid of these people?

• Ubuntu Desktop shifted to right

  I am using Ubuntu 12.04 (precise) Kernel : 3.5.0-18-generic I am encountering a strange problem, my whole desktop has shifted to right. This happened after I restored my system, I was getting a blank screen earlier.(something is better than nothing). For some reason it also shows my display as laptop. Running xrandr xrandr: Failed to get size of gamma for output default Screen 0: minimum 640 x 480, current 1024 x 768, maximum 1024 x 768 default connected 1024x768+0+0 0mm x 0mm 1024x768 0.0* 800x600 0.0 640x480 0.0 Running lspci lspci -nn | grep VGA 00:02.0 VGA compatible controller [0300]: Intel Corporation 2nd Generation Core Processor Family Integrated Graphics Controller [8086:0102] (rev 09) My Display on window supports maximum of 1366*768. I do not want to reinstall everything please help. It is cycled around as mentioned by Eliah Kagan For correcting my blank screen issue I edited my grub file I edited this line and added nomodeset, without it screen gets all grained up. • Tuning Red Gate: #5 of Multiple

  In the Tuning Red Gate series I've shown you how to look at a current load on the system and how to drill down to look at historical analysis of the system. I've also shown how you can see the top queries and other information from the current status of the system. I have one more thing I can show you before we need to start fixing things and showing how that affects the data collected, historical moments in time. For example, back in Post #3 I was looking at some spikes in some of the monitored resources that were taking place a couple of weeks back in time. Once I identify a moment in time that I'm interested in, I can go back to the first page of Monitor, Global Overview, and click on the icon: From this you can select the date and time you're interested in. For example, I saw some serious CPU queues last week: This then rolls back the time for all the information that's available to the Global Overview and the drill down to the server and the SQL Server instance there. This then allows me to look at the Top Queries running at this point, sort them by CPU and identify what was potentially the query that was causing the problem right when I saw the CPU queuing This ability to correlate a moment in time with the information available to you in the Analysis window makes for an excellent tool to investigate your systems going backwards in time. It really makes a huge difference in your knowledge. It's not enough to know that something happened at a particular time. You need to know what it was that was occurring. Remember, the key to tuning your systems is having enough knowledge about them. I'll post more on Tuning Red Gate as soon as I can get some queries rewritten. I'm working on that.

• Scheduled task to map a network drive runs, but doesn't map the drive

  I have a task set up to run whenever the computer is logged onto that deletes all network folders and maps a network drive. Here is what is in the batch file: @echo off net use * /delete /y net use b: \\Server\Share /user:DOMAIN\Username password exit When the computer is restarted or logged off and back on, the task runs fine (according to the scheduled tasks window saying when it ran last) but the mapped drive doesn't show up. I'll open the command prompt and type "net use" and it simply says "There are no entries in the list". If I then right click on the task and run it, it works and the mapped drive shows up. I've checked the log and nothing shows up. I've tried adding a timer in the batch file so it waits 10 seconds (ping 1.1.1.1 -n 1 -w 10000nul) thinking that maybe the network wasn't connected, but that didn't work. What else can I try? Thanks!

  Trying to install MySQL onto the Windows XP machine. While going through the installation steps (in the "MySQL Server Instance Config. Wizard"), I get to a point where it the window reads: MySQL Server Instance Configuration (bold header) Choose the configuration for the server instance. Ready to execute... o Prepare configuration o Write configuration file o Start service o Apply security settings (this line is greyed out) Please press [Execute] to start the configuration. [ Back ] [ Execute ] [ Cancel ] So I press execute, and then a red X appears in the second step: Write configuration file and at the bottom, where it originally said: Please press [Execute] to start the configuration. It now says: The template configuration file cannot be found at C:\Program Files\MySQL\MySQL Server 5.0\bin\my-template.cnf I'm unsure what it means, but I canceled the config wizard and looked in the directory that had been created (C:\Program Files\MySQL\MySQL Server 5.0). • How do I re-install Unity after uninstalling gnome-shell?

  I am using Ubuntu 14.04. I have big issues with the Unity desktop. I installed then uninstalled gnome-shell (using "apt-get autoremove --purge gnome-shell"). Since then, my desktop has no background and no icons. Plus, and this is the bothering part, unity is very unstable. On startup, there is a huge use of memory, much more than before. Sometimes, I also cannot minimize a window without having the desktop freezing and having to kill the process in question with tty1. I have tried to use : apt-get autoremove --purge ubuntu-desktop apt-get install ubuntu-desktop But it does not change a thing. I tried to update my video drivers but it is still the same. How can I reinstall the unity desktop thoroughly (obviously, something in its install is broken) ? If it is not possible, is it safe that I create a new partition on my disk where I will put my files and reinstall Ubuntu on the old partition (I do have a USB install of Ubuntu 14.04 but not enough space to save my files on it) ?

• Tips on debugging collections

  The "Quick Watch" feature of Visual Studio is an awesome tool when debugging your stuff...  I use it all the time and quite often I end up exploring hashtables or lists of all sorts...  One thing I hate is when I have to explore Collections...  Good god did I lose time trying to find the inner member that contains my stuff when exploring collections...  Most collections have the inside member that you can search for and find and explore to see the list of things you wanted to look at.  Something in the likes of this.    I've known a little trick for a while now and I give it to everyone I end up debugging something with so I figured that probably not many people know about this...  Here's the tip...  Send the collection into an ArrayList in the QuickWatch window!  Yes, you heard me right, just type    new ArrayList(yourcollectionhere) in my case:    new ArrayList(this.Controls) in the expresion textbox and here's the result when you hit reevaluate! Pretty neat trick to make your debugging experience less of a pain when dealing with collections...    Happy debugging all !

  If you’re a system administrator and find yourself making changes in Group Policy Editor, you might want to make a shortcut to it. Here we look at creating a shortcut, pinning it to the Taskbar, and adding it to Control Panel. Note: Local Group Policy Editor is not available in Home versions of Windows 7. Typing gpedit.msc into the search box in the Start menu to access Group Policy Editor can get old fast. To create a shortcut, right-click on the desktop and select New \ Shortcut. Next type or copy the following path into the location field and click Next. c:\windows\system32\gpedit.msc Then give your shortcut a name…something like Group Policy, or whatever you want it to be and click Finish. Now you have your Group Policy shortcut… If you want it on the Taskbar just drag it there to pin it. For example, one of these programs includes 16 active and effective Product Advisor Groups (PAGs) that interact directly with Oracle management, developers and business partners to provide input into product strategies and improvements. • Copy Excel Formatting the Easy Way with Format Painter

  The Format Painter in Excel makes it easy to copy the formatting of a cell and apply it to another. With just a few clicks you can reproduce formatting such as fonts, alignment, text size, border, and background color. On any Excel worksheet, click on the cell with the formatting you’d like to copy.  You will see dashed lines around the selected cell. Then select the Home tab and click on the Format Painter.   You’ll see your cursor now includes a paintbrush graphic. Move to the cell where you’d like to apply the formatting and click on it. Your target cell will now have the new formatting.   If you double-clicking on Format Painter you can then click on multiple individual files to which to apply the format. Or, you can click and drag across a group of cells. When you are finished applying formats, click on Format Painter again, or on the Esc key, to turn it off. The Format Painter is a very simple, but extremely useful and time saving tool when creating complex worksheets. • Name disappeared from main menu bar

  I have Ubuntu 10.4. I installed a nvidia gigabyte geforce 210 graphic card because the intel graphic card is a disaster. I use a terminal and basic, fiddly adjustments were successfully made to get the window to fit the screen. The new card is a roaring success. Nothing freezes and visuals can be set to Extra. But, from that point on, my main menu bar misbehaved and icons kept disappearing. Logon and logoff usually helped. R-E-I-S-U-B was needed when the actual logoff icon disappeared. My full name, Anthony Burman, appeared in the main menu bar. It was alonside Wanda, the Fish , the Oracle.... My name disappeared and I cannot get it back. It can't be found anywhere in the 'add to panel' section. Indicator applet session also can't bring it back. How do i re-insert my name on the toolbar? Thanks, Ant.

• Intel graphics driver installer, now the CPU fan is rarely quiet

  I have an Optimus chipset: Intel HD 4000 (i7-3635QM CPU) Geforce 640m I don't care about the NVIDIA card, so I didn't try to install any proprietary drivers for it. So: I was having a choppy+high CPU experience with gnome-shell on Ubuntu 14.04. Only happened when I tried moving a window around quickly. I used the Intel graphics installer hoping that it will fix the problem. It did fix the problem, now there is no choppyness or high CPU when I move windows around. However, there is a new problem now: The fan is rarely quiet, doing barely anything at all will cause the fan to go into loud mode quickly. That happens despite the CPU usage being at just around 4%. This wasn't the case before installing Intel drivers. It would normally only do that if, for example, I'm installing packages or doing something that puts some stress on the CPU. I set all CPU cores to "powersave" using cpufreq-set, but nothing changed. Also on Windows, the fans are really quiet when I'm in powersave mode. I believe they completely shut off for most of the time. I remember the installer giving me a report at the end as to which packages it installed. Unfortunately, I didn't save the report and I don't know where it would have saved it if it did. Any ideas or similar experiences?

• Sensei mouse sensitivity

  I've recently acquired a Steelseries Sensei. Despite being a great mouse, I'm having some trouble finding settings that I can get used to... The mouse engine allows me to set a CPI from 0 to 5700. It also allows me to set it even higher, calling it "DCPI" (Double CPI), from 5701 to 11400. On Window's Control Panel, there's a "Pointer Speed" slider and a "Enhance Pointer Precision" checkbox (wording may be different as I use a non-english version). The majority of games allow me to set an in-game "Mouse Sensitivity". Some games let me use a "Raw mouse input". I'm already familiar with the basics of CPI/DPI - "higher CPI means less hand movement", but what are the differences between all those options? Is there a "better" or "worst" setting?

• How do I get the Windows 8 Desktop to stop refreshing itself while I'm working?

  I have an Asus touchscreen laptop with Windows 8, not RT. The best way that I can describe the problem is: when I am working on something in the desktop, the desktop/screen refreshes itself. It doesn't matter if I am using an IE window, or Word, etc. Basically, while I'm viewing the desktop, the icons disappear for a second or two and then come back. If I'm typing in Word, the screen essentially pauses and just stops typing. It won't start typing again until I touch the screen or click on something. In IE, the screen acts pretty similar, if I happen to be typing a URL, or in a form, etc. Why does it do this? And how can I make it stop? Thanks so much for any help you can give me, and please let me know if I can provide any other info that you think may be helpful.
