• How do I return a purchase from the Ubuntu Software Centre?

  I purchased Amnesia (game) from the Ubuntu Software Centre. It crashes on startup every time and I therefore want to return it for a refund. I can't find a way of doing so through the USC and, strangely, I can't find any trace of this having been asked before (maybe bad googling on my part). So the question is: how do I return a purchase and get a refund through the USC? EDIT Installing proprietary driver for AMD catalyst fixed Amnesia, but I still think this is an important question because it's basic customer service for any purchase. I'd therefore appreciate any answers anyone can find and I will continue to look too. If I find the answer I'll post it here.

• Booting from USB only

  I am a newbie on linux and dont understand many things unless given a line by line instructions. I am trying but linux does take some getting used to. I have installed ubuntu from live usb stick. Now I cannot boot my system without the usb being plugged in. There are answers whereby certain commands need to be run. For any command that I run with sudo (prefix) the terminal asks me for a password which I dont know. What do I do? How do I fix it such that the booting happens without usb being plugged in. So far I have just been booting from USB. Please help a recent converted from Windows. Thanks all

  One of the five people who interviewed me asked a question that resulted in an hour-long discussion: "Explain how you would develop a frequency-sorted list of the ten thousand most-used words in the English language." My initial response was to assail the assumptions underlying the problem. Language is a fluid thing, I argued. It changes in real time. Vocabulary and usage patterns shift day-to-day. To develop a list of words and their frequencies means taking a snapshot of a moving target. • As a programmer what single discovery has given you the greatest boost in productivity?

  This question has been inspired by my recent discovery/adoption of distributed version control. I started using it (mercurial) just because I liked the idea of still being able to make commits at times when I couldn't connect to the central server. I never expected it would give me a large boost in general productivity, but a pleasant side effect I discovered was that making a new clone every time I started a new task and giving that clone a descriptive folder name is extremely effective at keeping me on task resulting is a noticeable productivity increase. So as a programmer what single discovery has given you the greatest boost in productivity? Extra respect for answers which involve tools or practices that aren't so obvious from the outside!

• What options are there for splitting UI layout from code logic using a markup language?

  What tools similar to GWT's UIBinder exist in other languages? By this I mean a system where you can define your UI layout in a markup language (preferably html+css) and attach the functionality to the layout using the code. I'm most interested in anything for python, but answers in other languages would interest me as well. I'm interested because the benefits of having a non-programmer work directly on the layout without needing to touch the code and adjust a bunch of UI toolkit method calls is very productive. I'm aware of Flex for flash, but is there anything else out there? What search terms might I use to find such frameworks? I've looked around but I haven't found anything concrete.

• Message "Getting information" don't close

  I have Windows 7 x64 I installed this software and I have a problem. I like Ubuntu but I feel the softwares related Linux often have problems. We each time need to seek to resolve the malfunctions. my problem is , I am getting a message as Getting information, please wait and it don't disappear. My firewall is completely deactivate and I already go to the UAC or the firewall to allow the "exe" of the Ubuntu One software in the settings. Nothing runs.Linux never run at the first time. • Blank desktop after login

  Today my 14.04 updated itself not requiring a reboot. After a while I rebooted because of other reasons and then I was pleasantly surprised by a blank screen. I have tried everything I could think about including Reinstalled compiz, unity, ubuntu-desktop, xorg Reinstalled and then removed the nvidia driver So far nothing has worked. Except for one little thing: my cairo-dock is showing. And that's all. I tried with Unity doesn't load, no Launcher, no Dash appears, but none of the answers there helped me. I also tried removing my ~/.Xauthority file and it still doesn't work. Does anybody know what else I could try? UPDATE: sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg sudo service lightdm stop sudo service lightdm start When I run that code and then login again the icons on the desktop are displayed but the menu and the launcher are still not there. Also, when I try to run an application from CTRL + ALT + F1 such as dconf reset -f /org/compiz/ it says Cannot autolaunch D-Bus without X11 $DISPLAY I can only run applications with export DISPLAY=:0

• How to conduct A/B split testing with AdSense?

  Ok so I have decided to A/B test my AdSense ads. I have run a few tests, but I don't know what conclusion to draw and how to keep track of things. Some specific questions: If I have 2 test units, 1 wins. I test that with a new and so on. How do I find if say the fifth one did better than the first one? How do I keep track of things? Do I let the variables independent of each other, because they certainly are not. In real life, font size can affect CTR even if the colors are different. I can test blue color with red color, and then test Arial font with Georgia, but how do I know which combination is the best? This would result in way too many test units. I tried Googling a lot, but I could not find answers to these questions.

• What is the reason for high power consumption in 12.04?

Here is the problem: After upgrading to Ubuntu 12.04 Precise Pangolin, my t420s laptop idles above 20 watts (right now with only Chrome running, I'm using 25.4 W) I had a similar problem with Ubuntu 11.10, but after much tweaking the power consumption came down < 10 W on idle. The primary culprit to the 11.10 problem was supposedly fixed by default in 12.04. So my question is, what is happening now? Computer: Lenovo Thinkpad t420s, with Intel i5-2520M @2.5 Ghz - 2x 4gb ram - disk 0 HITACHI 320 Gb - disk 1 SATA SSD 128 Gb

  We are on the stage of planning a CakePHP project. It is a relatively a big project for us, as a developer+project manager, I want to hire someone to work with me. But what I really want is to spend less time on actual coding, without losing control of the code quality. What I want to do is that I will design all the functions of the project in CakePHP, at least all the model's functions, and leave the implementation part to the coder who I am going to hire. I have been searching for advices regarding this but all tips seem to be directed at face-to-face meetings (things like "shake hands firmly"). What are the differences? How can I make the best out of those differences? When my site comes up in a Google search, there are 2 links displayed underneath: I believe these links are called "Google sitemap" and my question is how to configure them in Wordpress. Because while the right link is pointing to the /ueber-mich URL at the website, the left link was pointing to an non-existing /imprint and I had to add that webpage as a workaround for now. And I'd like to change the /imprint to German /impressum anyway (currently I use mod_rewrite to redirect).

  This question already has an answer here: Legal issues around using real players names and team emblems in an open source game 2 answers Ok...this question hasn't been asked before, its very similar to some, but here's the difference: I am making a soccer/football simulator game, that only has national teams (with no official logos) just the country names and flags. Now, my doubt is the following...can I use real player names (that play or played on that national team?) From what I understand if I use a player name linked to a club like Barcelona FC (not a national team) I need the right from the club and the association that club is linked to, right? But If I am only linking the name just to a country...I might just need the permission of the actual player (that I am using his name) and not any other associations, correct? • Color distortion with Intel HD4000 over HDMI output - VGA is fine

  I set up a new system with i5 3570k gigabyte z77 d3h using integrated graphics (HD4000) and I've installed the 64bit Desktop version of 12.04. Connected to my Acer Screen via HDMI, the colors are horribly distorted. I think the biggest issue is that black appears as greenish. Over VGA everything is fine. Interestingly, I once observed that connecting both, the VGA and the HDMI cable at the same time, solved the issue. Ubuntu thought 2 screens were connected, I mirrored the image, and over HDMI the colors looked fine. However, after a reboot I am now unable to reproduce this behavior. I read frequently, that Intel hardware should be supported out of the box by Ubuntu but it doesn't seem to be the case here. Should I upgrade my Kernel? If so, which version would you recommend? • A good language for c# dev to expand his mind [closed]

  I have some free time on my hands and I was thinking about learning a new language. I do not plan to use it in my day-to-day job, but I rather want to expand my way of thinking to get a better sense where the dev world is heading from a language perspective and to don't get stuck in my way when programming by rather try new approaches. I was thinking either a functional language, like Haskell or F# (which is a bit more 'pragmatic from a .NET dev standpoint) or something dynamic (like Python, that in my oppinion has nicer syntax than Ruby). What can you recommend that is enjoyable, at least a bit practical, but most of all, new (from a c# dev perspective). I appreciate any answers.

  My question is essentially entirely in the title, but let me add some points to prevent some "why on earth would you want to do that" sort of answers: This is more of a mind experiment than an attempt to implement real software. For fun. Don't worry about computational speed or the number of available memory bytes. Computers get faster and better all of the time. Imagine we have two data files: Mother.dna and Father.dna. What else would be required? (Bonus point for someone who tells me approx how many GB each file will be, and if the size of the files are exactly the same number of bytes for everyone alive on Earth!) There would ideally need to be a way to see what the egg becomes as it becomes a human adult. If you fancy, feel free to outline the design. I am initially thinking that there'd need to be some sort of volumetric voxel-based 3D environment for simulation purposes.

I've also restarted the server several times. But when i checked http://localhost/?phpinfo=1 There wasnt any evidence of APC Extension Installation. Please what i'm i doing wrong?   I want to become a more skilled programmer. I also want to do it through Objective-C and iOS. What websites or programs that you know of have problems that I can solve (with the answers)? I have failed some programming tests for jobs (such as "Given 2 values in a Binary Tree - how do you find the lowest common ancestor?) and I want to become a better engineer. I have developed 54 iOS/Android apps to date, but my core CS Skills apparently are rusty/bad. I have looked at TopCoder - but there aren't very many competitions going on, the website is terrible, and there does not appear to be anything that really supports Objective-C/iOS Websites?

• What most games would benefit from having

  I think I've seen "questions" like this on stackoverflow but sorry if I'm overstepping any bounds. Inspired by my recent question and all the nice answers (Checklist for finished game?) I think every gamedev out there has something he/she thinks that almost every game should have. That knowledge is welcome here! So this is probably going to be an inspirational subjective list of some sorts and the point is that anyone reading this question will see a point or two that they've overlooked in their own development and might benefit from adding. I think a good example might be: "some sort of manual or help section. Of course it should be proportional to how advanced the game is. Some users won't need it and won't go looking for it but the other ones that do will become very frustrated if they can't remember how to do something specific that should be in the manual". A bad example might be "good gameplay". Of course every game benefits from this but the answer is not very helpful.

• From Java to Javascript? [duplicate]

  This question already has an answer here: Are there any OO-principles that are practically applicable for Javascript? 2 answers I am primarily a Java programmer. Because of its OO principles and the general paradigm of Java programming, like wrapping things in static variables, and having things return specific types, heavily aids me in "visualizing" a program. Instead of thinking of a big program, I can, instead, focus on smaller organized parts of my eventual program, and add functionality and build up from there. Thus, I have trouble programming in other languages. Or at least, I have not been able to program in the same ability as I do in Java compared to other languages. I know Javascript has OO principles, so I'd like to learn this language in a OO-based like I would program with Java. Is this possible?
