• How can I update generic non-pnp monitor?

  Background I've been running a KVM switch with my monitor at 1920 x 1080 over VGA for over a year. Did a Windows Update on 12/11/12 which did the following: Update for Windows 7 for x64-based Systems (KB2779562) Security Update for Windows 7 for x64-based Systems (KB2779030) Cumulative Security Update for Internet Explorer 8 for Windows 7 for x64-based Systems (KB2761465) Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool x64 - December 2012 (KB890830) Security Update for Windows 7 for x64-based Systems (KB2753842) Security Update for Windows 7 for x64-based Systems (KB2758857) Security Update for Windows 7 for x64-based Systems (KB2770660) After a restart, my extended monitor was dark. I attempted to reset the extended display configuration, and noticed my monitor was being detected as a Generic Non-PnP Monitor: I uninstalled, downloaded new, and re-installed display drivers. Nothing. I attempted to unplug my monitor from the power for 15 minutes. Nothing. I followed some of the suggestions on this thread; specifically DanM's which suggested to create a new *.inf file and replace that in Device Manager. Device Manager said the "best driver software for your device is already installed". The only thing that works is when the monitor is directly attached to the laptop. This obviously is not what I want. My thought is to somehow remove the Generic Non-PnP Monitor from registry. How would I accomplish this and would this help? Any other suggestions? • Is there a list of Windows services that can be turned off to save resources?

  Every time I open up my task manager and look at the tasks running, it appears to me that there has got to be a bunch of junk running in there that I don't want or need and would be better off turning off (e.g. set the service to manual vs. automatic) In particular I'm running Windows XP, but I'd be interested in services for any version. e.g. Service: ThinkPad PM Service What is it: The ibmpmsvc.exe process is installed by default on IBM Notebook computers. It allows various functions of your IBM notebook to be controlled using the blue Fn keys. If you use the blue Fn keys on your Notebook, you should leave this process running. Otherwise, if it is causing problems for your system you should terminate the ibmpmsvc.exe process. (source) Thus for me, (having never used, or intending to use these buttons) - I want to turn it off. There's lots that just seem painfully unnecessary to me... I'm just not sure which ones I can "safely" stop/disable without issues... "Alerter", "ClipBook", "Messenger", "Telnet", "ATI Hotkey Poller", "Office Source Engine", etc. I'd appreciate any info on services that are truly unnecessary, or only useful to certain people/types of users.

• Computer Won't Boot Properly, unless in safe mode?

  I bought a computer today and booted it up, but when I did I only got a blank screen. I checked to make sure it wasn't the monitor by connecting it to my old computer...it worked. I then tried connecting my monitor to both DVI ports and found that the bottom one did work. However, now it just boots up and says "loading windows" and then when the login screen is suppose to come up the screen just goes blank and monitor says "no input, check cord" (or something like that). I tried reinstalling windows and then I was able to log on normally. I used the CD's and reinstalled all the drivers, then rebooted...now I am stuck right back where I started. I tried taking out the RAM and inserting into different slots, that didn't fix anything. I was able to boot up into windows using safe-mode. I suspected that my ATI Radeon 6950 was the issue and downloaded the drivers, but I can't install them on safe-mode. Someone said to install C++ distr. and I tried doing that to fix driver installation problem of "failed to load detection driver" but it wouldn't let me do that either. Please someone help me, I don't want to have to deal with the evil redtape of sending it back to get a replacement! • Hardware issue, bsod with windows xp irq and strange messages with ubuntu

  I have an old Acer T160 and it used to run Windows XP. But I keep getting random BSOD's. I keep seeing IRQ conflicts. I tried to run ubuntu, which runs and keeps running. But sometimes is not responding. Also there are these popups at ubuntu 12.04 that my network cable (which is onboard) is unplugged. But I have no cable in it! and have an usb dongle for wifi. which also seems unstable. have to (auto)reconnect sometimes. So my question is: is it my mobo, power supply or something else? FYI: I had an dvd-rw station which did not open properly, so unplugged the ata and power, als removed the second harddrive. now only have sata harddrive. also removed the extra video card (ati sapphire x1600 pro) so use only onboard video now and still have these issues. EDIT Update: will try with a new PSU (power supply unit of 400watt) the old (factory) one was 300watt. and will use a usb drive which has 12.04 ubuntu on it (made with unetbootin) to format everything and re-install ubuntu. (so also delete mbr partition) will update the day after tomorrow.

  I'm using Ubuntu 12.10, AMD 12.11 beta drivers, AMD APP SDK 2.7 and OpenCL. I have three amd radeon 7990s plugged in each of which are a dual 7970 so I have six gpus altogether. I plan to go up to eight in a few days. Windows couldn't use even 4 but linux works fine with 6 so far. The strange thing is that the six gpus are only detected by OpenCL in unity (the ubuntu default window manager). If I switch to e17, blackbox or fluxbox or anything else for that matter OpenCL only detects one. I'm using a simple OpenCL program to list all devices to check. I've also checked the output of aticonfig --list-adapters, fglxinfo and clinfo. The first two always show six in all window managers wheras clinfo shows 6 in unity but 1 gpu in all other WMs. I'm also using an X config generated by aticonfig --initial -f --adapter=all. I'm also only using one monitor. I've also checked using lsmod that the fglrx module is loaded in all WMs. So I have two questions. Why does OpenCL see six gpus only in unity? How can I enable six gpus on other lightweight WMs? Basically I'm getting at what determines how many gpus the OpenCL runtime sees? Thanks.

• Advice on Computer Specs for overall development/general use machine

  At the moment I am restricted to a laptop with 512MB of RAM, a 120GB HDD and a 1.5GHz Intel processor for all my development and general browsing needs, and as you can probably tell using it for anything modern is a painful experience. As a result I've decided to buy myself a new desktop computer, one that will stand the test of time and one that can be upgraded easily. Rather than build the machine myself I've decided to go through Dell as I've had good experiences with them when purchasing computers for my family. • Graphics Artifacts/ Texture Flickering

  Hey I been having some problems with artifacts in games. Sometimes textures flicker. Artifacts of various shapes and sizes show up usually after a couple games of dota 2. I built my computer almost exactly one month ago and it has been doing this pretty much from the start except before the artifacts I believe just flashed on screen fast enough to where I couldn't tell what it was but I still noticed. In dota I've seen green triangular artifacts among other things. I've tried running Furmark for a while but even though it pushes the gpu much harder than dota 2, there are still no artifacts. It maxes in furmark at about 60C and running every game I've tried on it at 40C. CPU and system temp don't usually get higher than 40C either. These are my system specs: Gigabyte Z68 Intel Motherboard 16 GB Gskill Ripjaws SDRAM DDR3 Sapphire Radeon HD 7770 GHz edition Intel Core i5-2500k (with built in gpu) Corsair 750 Watt PSU windows 7-64 bit I have the latest drivers for everything. What should I do about this? Try to RMA my graphics card? Are there other things that could be causing this?

• Computer does not boot, often

  I've ran into a issue with my computer that it does no longer reach POST, but simply powers on for a fraction of a second and powers off. But this is not always, some times it boots just normally and it works as it should, no issues with not enough power or anything. But as soon as I turn it of, I can not turn it back on, but then again at some random point it just powers up again, and resumes normal operation. If I disconnect the 8pin ATX connector from the motherboard, it powers up, fans and disks spinning normally until I power it off again. So this problem only happens when ATX is connected, which seems odd, I normally always saw this kind of an error if ATX was not connected, but here it's the exact opposite. It also does not emit any sound on the buzzer, except the normal beep, when it powers up normally. I have already tried: Remove graphics card Remove one and/or all RAM sticks Disconnect everything non-essential, even hard drives Clear CMOS I have not yet tried to remove all components and tried to boot everything outside of the case, because I did not have the time to disassemble and bleed the water loop. However, I can confirm that nothing is stuck underneath the motherboard, not is any of those brass raisers touching the board where it should not. Specs: Gigabyte GA-970A-UD3 AMD FX6300 ATI HD7850 I think this should be enough for this issue.

• Troubleshooting an overheating CPU

  I & my father just recently put together a new PC. Specs below. From the very beginning, on boot it will often complain that the CPU is too hot. If I sit in BIOS and watch the CPU, it'll drop back down from red to blue (<72C), at which point I've tended to just boot into Windows...and haven't had any problems. In fact, I've played a couple hours straight of Skyrim at max settings, and not had any visible issues. That said, I've occasionally walked away & come back to find that it's crashed. Yesterday, it crashed (while idle) twice in 12 hours, which shifted the balance from busy-with-life to nervous-I'm-about-to-melt-something. I just installed Core Temp which is showing my 4 cores fluxuating between 70-98C. I'm guessing at this point that the CPU fan may be incorrectly installed or defective. My first thought is to either (a) add water cooling (which the case supports) and / or (b) replace the CPU fan with an after-market one. That said, I'm very open to suggestions. A note, while I certainly don't want to burn money here, I have a baby coming any day now and am still unpacking from a recent move so if I have a choice between an option that costs money and another that takes a while...I'll happily spend a bit extra. Side question: Should I be nervous to even have this on at this point? Let me know if there's something useful I could add to my report. Otherwise, I'm looking forward to your suggestions! Thanks. Now the graphic card appears on device manager and catalyst but as 8800 series (not exact model), and cant check the card with neither dxdiag/GPU-z/HWMonitor when right-clicking on CCC only Intel card appears launching a game and using as "high performance" would speed it up a little but i cant be sure How to verify its working properly? HWMonitor wont show AMD card even when set to high performance Latest GPU-Z wont work because a problem with Intel's, and legacy ones wont either what can I do now? • Windows 7 Blank Screen on Boot / Login

  I have a new system that's having a few problems... sometimes (seems to be when the PC is cold, i.e. has been switched off for a while, though that could be my imagination) I get a blank blue screen when I boot up. The system boots normally and auto-logs-in. The desktop loads and I'm even able to launch applications, but then everything disappears and the screen goes to the default windows desktop blue colour (not the desktop image, just a plain blue with no mouse cursor). At this point the machine completely locks up - I'm unable to even toggle Num Lock and have to hold in the power button for 5 seconds to kill it. Interestingly if I manage to launch some applications before it goes blank, they will usually crash... sometimes explorer.exe will crash too. When I reboot, the system is fine and stable. I've installed the latest graphics drivers and run memtest86+ for 6 passes (and counting) with no errors. The system specs are: CPU: Intel I7 2.66 @ 3.4GHz RAM: 6GB (3 * 2GB DDR3) HDD: 128GB Crucial M225 SSD Motherboard: Gigabyte EX58-UD3R Gfx: ATI Radeon Sapphire 5870 1GB Note: There are a few similar questions but I haven't found one that matches my symptoms

• Host system resets (crashes) when using VMWare or VirtualBox and 64-bit guest systems

  I have been trying to install virtual systems on VMWare for a while now and encountered strange behaviour from my PC. The behaviour is as follows: On "automatic" virtualization mode it either outputs a cryptic error message (can MAYBE give later, if I can reproduce) right on startup (before even the BIOS) or it resets the complete HOST system (blackscreen, bios...) If I install a Windows XP on it it works well on "binary translation" mode. If I try installing Linux on it, in "binary translation" mode it crashes 1 or 2 seconds after I hit enter on the GRUB selection screen (after the first page of kernel messages rolled in) Using VirtualBox it crashes right in the BIOS. It gave me a Bluescreen though! 0x00000101: CLOCK_WATCHDOG_TIMEOUT: a clock interrupt was not received on a secondary processor within the allocated time interval NEWS: I tried VirtualBox again and it did not completely crash the computer this time. It gave me a critical error and a log file: http://pastebin.com/yKZSDs91 In conclusion, it will crash instantly if VT-x is activated. If not, it seemingly only crashed if I try to install something with 64 bits. Another update: Yes, it ONLY crashes when the guest is 64 bit! What I tried: Reinstalling Windows (my Windows installation was quite broken so it seemed natural. Didn't work though.)   Pre-note: This is not a problem I am having with Minecraft. All answers I can find seem to be Minecraft issues. Error: could not create the Java Virtual Machine. Error: A fatal exception has occurred. Program will exit. I get this error when I try to do something Java related. I cannot launch a .jar without this error coming up and when I try to install JDK, I get this error. This has been plauging me for a while and I was not able to research an answer so I thought I would ask it myself. EDIT: Windows 7 (x64) Dell Studio Laptop, 4GB RAM, external Radeon HD 6950 Graphics Card. I have tried uninstalling all JVMs and reinstalling but it didn't work, although I cannot remember how thorough I was so I may try again. • Many different BSOD

  I'm experiencing multiple bluescreens for a couple of months now. Their error code is as diverse as their time of occurence... Sometimes it happens during gaming, sometimes when watching videos, sometimes when the computer is idle. These are the bluescreens I see most often: PAGE_FAULT_IN_NONPAGED_AREA KMODE_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL SYSTEM_SERVICE_EXCEPTION SYSTEM_THREAD_EXCEPTION INTERRUPT_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL DRIVER_OVERRAN_STACK_BUFFER Responsible drivers (according to the memory dumps): hal.dll tcpip.sys dxgmms1.sys ndis.sys mouhid.sys atikmdag.sys dump_atapi.sys and of course: ntoskrnl.exe My first thought was a driver incompatibility because I am using Windows 8 and some of the bluescreens seem to come from driver issues. All drivers are up to date. I'm afraid that my memory is broken or the mainboard or both. I used the windows integrated memtest which didn't find any errors. Memtest86 found some errors. Does it make sense to buy new memory? Couldn't it be a problem of the board as well? I also read that my memory could run at a too low voltage. But it's set to 1.5V as recommended. Another guess would be to set the memory's latencies manually, but how do I know which ones to try? Here is a screenshot of bluescreenview showing the latest bluescreens. Maybe someone has faced the same behavior before and found a solution. Any ideas or suggestions? Current setup on which the bluescreens occur. • Screen randomly goes blue/black/white

  Problem Randomly, while using my computer, the monitor goes dark grey/almost black, or it goes white with faint grey vertical lines, or it goes blue with black vertical lines. It's as if the computer powers off. People tell me I sign out of Skype, Spotify stops playing when it happens, etc. When I look at the tower, it doesn't seem like it's off at all. Nothing changes, fans are spinning, lights are on, etc. If you were only looking at the tower, you'd never know there was a problem The only way I can get it to come back up is to push and hold the power button and turn it off, then back on This never happens while I'm playing video games. I've done 5-6 hour sessions of League of Legends, and it doesn't do anything When I'm just browsing the web, reading email, checking Reddit, etc, it happens all the time. It can happen multiple times in a session, it usually takes only about 5 minutes from the time I start browsing to when the computer crashes This started happening after I moved to a new apartment (this has to be relevant somehow, it was not happening where I lived before) There is nothing in the crash logs or event logs System Specs i5 2500k CPU AMD Radeon 6800 GPU Gigabyte z68a-d3h-b3 motherboard WD VelociRaptor 1 TB HDD Screenshots Device manager About screen Things I have tried I was getting a WMI Error in my event logs, but I fixed it using Microsoft's fix, KB 2545227 I was using Windows 8. I wiped the HDD and downgraded to Windows 7 64 bit I took out the video card and used a can of air to totally clean out the video card, all fans, and the inside of the computer in general. I made sure all of the video card pins were fine, then reconnected it I tried to update my motherboard BIOS, but anything I downloaded from Gigabyte was only for 32 bit machines, not 64. I don't even know how to tell what my motherboard BIOS is at right now I am using a power strip, and anything else connected to it works just fine If I re-seat the monitor cable while this is happening, nothing changes Please, help me. I've been battling this for several weeks now, and it's so frustrating it makes me not even want to use the computer.

• How can I get multiple video cards to work on linux?

  I installed fedora 12. I have 2 ATI cards that I used to use on windows to run 4 monitors. A recurring problem has been to get them detected in linux. Only my secondary card is picked up linux. When I manage the displays it detects the 2 monitors connected that card. What are the specific steps I should take to get the second card detected? Supposedly there is a tool system-config-xfree. I don't have it, yum can't find it. Also I heard it has something to do with editing some xorg.conf file or something to that effect. I have absolutely no idea how to find the "bus id" of my card, or lookup the horizontal refresh rates, etc.. I would probably have no problem following the documentation & editing the file if I knew a good way to find these values. Someone also suggested installing linux twice and saving the xorg.conf it generates each time (with different card each time) and then merging the two by hand. That is like killing a fly with a hammer though, when I do this again and again in the future It'd be nice to not have to take twice as long. Thanks

• Half of installed RAM is hardware reserved

  After a rather arduous and convoluted series of problems that left me without a desktop for ~80 days, I've finally got the thing up and running, having replaced the power supply, motherboard, graphics card and CPU. Now, however, I'm experiencing the 'hardware reserved RAM' issue. Perhaps this is the exhaustion talking, but looking at the question that tends to get pointed to when this kind of topic gets locked as a duplicate hasn't helped. I have 16 GB of RAM installed in an MSi 970A-G46, which is spec'd for up to 32 GB of RAM. The BIOS recognizes that I have 16 GB installed, and the resource monitor also shows the whole 16 GB, only it shows 8 GB as hardware reserved. I've seen suggestions that it's an OS issue, but the particular installation of Windows 7 (64-bit) which I'm running on my boot drive is the same as the one that could actually access the 16 GB in my previous motherboard (MSi 870A-G54). I've updated my BIOS using the MSi Live Update tool and restarted the machine with no effect, and I cannot seem to locate any 'Memory Remapping' option as I've seen mentioned. I've physically swapped the RAM between the slots to no effect. I've unchecked the Maximum Memory box in the msconfig Boot tab's advanced options, also to no effect. • Win7 Hangs During App Install/Upgrade/Uninstall

  I have a custom built PC that intermittently hangs when installing, uninstalling, or upgrading applications. Technical Specs ASUS P5E w/ WiFi Motherboard Intel Core2 Quad Q6600 Processor 4x 2GB G.Skill DDR2 800 SDRAM ASUS EAH2900XT / Radeon HD 2900XT 512MB Video Card Under normal operation the machine runs reliably, even under heavy load, such as video transcoding. The temperature never gets anywhere near where I would worry about it. However, the machine regularly hangs (complete lockup, no response to keyboard or mouse, no activity on-screen) when either installing a new application, uninstalling an existing application, or applying patches to existing applications or the OS. This is extremely frustrating as this machine is primarily used as a HTPC. Several apps are configured for automatic updates, and these updates sometimes cause the machine to lockup while we are watching content on the PC. In previously investigating this issue, I found one likely problem could be my Logitech Webcam. The Logitech software has a bug that leaves an entry in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\ Control\SessionManager\PendingFileRenameOperations Which references the Temp directory. My registry contained this error, so I uninstalled the webcam software and deleted this registry key value. Unfortunately, the machine will still intermittently hang. I've noticed that the hangs always happen when an install/upgrade/uninstall requires elevated privileges (presumably to modify the registry). I can typically get at least one install/upgrade/uninstall to complete after a reboot, but after that it is a game of russian roulette to see if the operation will succeed or hang the machine. The event log is not helpful, as log messages end at the time of the hang, with no record of a warning or error. My only recourse when the machine hangs in this way is to perform a hard reset/power cycle. Any tips on how to further debug this issue are greatly appreciated.

• Computer won't start after installing new video card

  So, 1 year and 340 days ago I bought a desktop computer. Since then, it has served me well. But lately, I wanted an upgrade, so I bought a new video card. I documented myself about the compatibility, and it is okay. So I opened the case, cleaned up that... dust elemental living inside of it. Unscrewed the plastic thingie on the outside to unscrew the old video card. Because of the stupid arrangement of the ports, I had to unscrew the motherboard to unplug it. So I unscrewed it, removed the old card, put in the new one, moved the motherboard back, screwed it back in, screwed the video card on the holder... thingie, and screwed the plastic thingie back in. Everything went smoothly, nothing had to be forced in/out. I connected the external power supply, closed the computer case, put the tower back in it's place and all the cables back in. When I pressed the power button, the LED turned... some color I can't distinguish. It stayed that way for a second, and then it went off. I tried a bunch of things, including permuting the external power supply arrangement (1 connection, 2 connections and no connections), with no success. And here are some of the specifications: Motherboard manufacturer: Asrock Processor: AMD Athlon II X2 3.0 GHz RAM: 2 x 2GB (had only 1 initially, bought the second plate a bit later) OLD video card: AMD Radeon HD 5450 NEW video card: Gigabyte nVidia GeForce GTX 650 GPU, 1GB GDDR5 128bit PCI-E, Dual-link DVI-Dx2 / HDMI / D-Sub Power supply: 450W + all the requirements I managed to find on the internet are met (+12V 18A or something) More specific information is stored... On that computer. If required, I may open the case again and read the stickers to find more specific information. I can also provide photos if necessary. Any ideas? Suggestions? Something? :|

• My new SSD is causing issues. How can I solve them?

  Computer specs 1 TB harddisc 120 GB 520intel SSD 8 GB DDR3 RAM Athlon Phenom II x64 955 3. 2ghz DK DFI Lanparty FX7900 M3H3 motherboard ASUS ATI RADEON HD6970 2 GB I have bought a new SSD (Intel 520, 120 GB), and wanted to use this as my system disc. I removed the other harddisc, and installed the SSD with the newest firmware. And then Windows 7 I updated Windows 7 with no problems and then put back my old harddrive. I formatted that old harddrive just to clean up at the same time... So at this stage everything was perfect. My new SSD was set as Master 0 Primary it boots on it and I have 1 TB emptyu harddrive I can use for whatever I want. So far no errors at all Now here is the problem, I installed a few games and everytime I tried to play the computer would say Windows must restart because DCOM server process launcher service terminated, or it says Windows must now restart because the Plug and Play service terminated unexpectedly Most commonly this error is caused by a rootkit virus, well I have tried formatting my entire computer, and running every antivirus I could find, so that shouldn't be it. I've also read somewhere it might happen when there are hardware issues. That on the otherhand would make sense, as I just put in a new SSD. I don't expect you to know this error. I haven't found anyone who knew it yet. maybe you can me guide through what might have gone wrong when I placed in the SSD? What have I checked regarding the SSD? It displays the right name when the computer starts up It has the newest firmware Did a 'sfc /scannow' which told me everything was fine I don't know what to do from here. Everything seems to work great with the drive. when I start playing games my computer crashes.

• Upgrade or replace?

  My current PC is about four years old, although I have made upgrades to it throughout its existence. The current specs are: (old) Intel Pentium D 2.80Ghz (32K L1 / 2M L2), Gigabyte 945GCMX-S2 motherboard (old) 2.5GB DDR2 (slot0: 512MB @ 533Mhz; slot1: 2GB @ 667Mhz) (new) HIS Radeon HD 4670 - I think this is limited by the motherboard not supporting PCIe 2.0 (?) (old) WD Caviar 160GB - pretty slow (new) WD Caviar Black 640GB (if any more specs are relevant, let me know and I'll add them) Now, on to my question. I've been having performance issues lately, both in video games and in intensive applications. A couple of examples: Android application development (running Eclipse and the Android emulator) is painfully slow (on Linux). I only realized this when, at my new job as an Android dev, both tools are MUCH quicker. (I'm not sure what CPU I have there) The guys at my new job got me NFS Hot Pursuit, in which I barely get like 5-10FPS, even with graphics options turned all the way down My guess is that the bottleneck in my system is my CPU, so I'm thinking of upgrading to a Quad Core i5 + new motherboard + 4GB DDR3 (or more, 'cause I know you'll all jump and say 8GB minimum). Now: Is that a good idea? Is my CPU really a bottleneck, or is the whole system too old and I should replace it? I run Windows 7 on the old, 160GB HDD (which is on IDE, by the way). Could this slow down games as well? Should I get a new drive for Windows if I want to play new games? I know nothing about power supplies. Could that be a problem / will it be a problem if I upgrade to an i5? How come DiRT2 works on full graphics settings (pretty amazing graphics by the way) and NFS Hot Pursuit pulls only 5-10FPS?

• Computer slow after installing 32GB RAM

  I'm currently running very large network simulations for my PhD research, for which I need lots of RAM. I have a Core i7 2600K processor with a Gigabyte GA-Z68AP-D3 motherboard, running Windows 7 professional 64bit. I bought the system with 8GB (2x4GB) DDR3 1600 MHz Corsair Vengeance RAM and the system ran like a dream. I'm planning to upscale my simulations so I removed the 2x4GB RAM and installed 4x8GB DDR 1600 MHz Corsair Vengeance RAM. When I rebooted the system, boot time was much longer than usual (10 mins just to get to login screen). After logging in, the whole system was unresponsive. I tried playing some games (Bioshock 2), but it was unplayable. I've not had this problem before and I have an ATI Radeon HD 5850 graphics card, so that's not the problem. The only thing that's changed is the RAM. I've looked through the specifications of Windows, my motherboard and my CPU and they all state that 32GB of RAM is supported. Does anyone have an idea of what's going on? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

• Rendering a frame is producing noise from speakers in Windows and Linux

  When any hardware accelerated application is rendering a frame (or many of them) a very short noise is coming from my speakers. This can be a game, a WebGL application or XBMC. When the application/game is rendering many frames per second (like most of them do) the noise is a continuous buzzing that gets higher pitched with higher framerates. This applies to Linux and Windows, so I'd assume it's a hardware problem. The current hardware in the PC is: CPU: Core2Quad Q9550 GPU: Radeon HD 5770 RAM: 2x2GB DDR2 Motherboard: Asus P5QLD PRO PSU: be quiet! Pure Power 530W Screen and speakers: Old 720p LCD TV connected via VGA and aux cable Muting the TV stops the noise, muting Windows doesn't. I tried replacing the PSU first (used a Tagan 700W PSU before) because I thought it was a power problem. It wasn't. I tried replacing the motherboard (used a ASUS P5B SE before) next because I thought it was a sound card problem. It wasn't. I tried the GPU in a different PC because I thought it was a broken graphics card. It worked perfectly fine in the other PC. I thought it might be interference, but moving the audio cable around changes absolutely nothing. I tried using an HDMI cable instead and that did work, but is not an option since my TV has only one HDMI input and I need that for my PS3.

• Out of memory errors but not actually out of memory...

  So, myself and my fellow support techs have been fighting with this issue and we still dont know what the problem is. Lets start off with the system specs: Windows XP 32 bit Corporate (SP2 and SP3) Intel D975XBX2 Mobo 4gb of ram Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 ATI Radeon HD 3600 - 512mb After a few hours of working on the machine, the end user will begin to see the following symptoms: Out of memory messages Title bars and menus dont draw in properly Problems accessing network resources Problems opening up documents such as MSWord and MSPowerpoint and text files Problems opening up explorer windows General instability We have looked at task manager while this issue was occurring, and all indicators, like PF usage, threads, handles, etc. are normal. We have been having trouble pinpointing the root cause of this issue. It is also not situated with one user, it affects 8-10. So far we have tried: Resetting CMOS (Waiting to see results) Replacing video card (didnt help) Windows updates (didnt help) Updating network drivers (didnt help) Switching user from 1gbps to 100mbps network connection (awaiting results) Swapping the affected user's hardware (waiting for results) Increasing desktop heap size (helped for a bit but then the issue became more frequent) Applying the /3 switch to XP (didnt help) Increasing and decreasing and setting PF to system managed state (didnt help) We did have a power outage at the office a couple weeks ago, and all these issues became more frequent. Prior to the power outage it may take a week or so for the users to experience the issues but since the power outage it takes 3-4 hours or less. We havent had reports of the above issues causing BSODs, although that would be easier to diagnose :). Any help is greatly appreciated.

• Hardware testing tool/suite

  Hi All, I just bought a new core i5 system (assembled) and started installing Windows 7. It was failing for many times and at some point got installed. After that, frequent crashes related to MEMORY. So checked the RAM using memtest86+ and found many errors.I got it replaced with the vendor and now if i install ANY OS, at some point in installation it either freezes completely with no response for hours, or restarts automatically. I tried installing Windows 7, Windows Vista and Ubuntu 9.10. I tested the new RAM again and found no problems in about 2 passes using memtest86+. I even updated the BIOS using bootable USB and even the problem persists. I am really not sure which hardware is causing trouble. I dont have any OS inside it, so i have to check using bootable CDs DVDs and USB only. Please advice on how to proceed. Are there any suites/ separate tools for checking integrity of each hardware parts and troubleshoot it? I wanted to confirm which part is problematic before going for replacement. Thanks a lot!
