    - by Asian Angel

This awesome video shows the process in action as drops of water remain on top of the pool of water and even form groups of drops! • Clockwork: A 40,000 Piece K’Nex Ball Machine [Video]

    - by Jason Fitzpatrick
You may have built a simple marble raceway out of construction toys like LEGO or K’Nex at some point in your life. No matter how grand a raceway it was, we can assure you it had nothing on this 40,000 piece room-sized monster. The creator, Austron, writes: This is Clockwork, my fifth major K’nex ball machine, and my largest and most complex K’nex structure to date. It took 8 months to build, has over 40,000 pieces, over 450 feet of track, 21 different paths, 8 motors, 5 lifts, and a one-of-a-kind computer-controlled crane, as well as two computer-controlled illuminated K’nex balls. For a more in-depth look at the construction we suggest checking out both his YouTube channel and his build blog. • Turn a Green Laser into a Microscope Projector [Science]

    - by ETC
No need to settle for squinting over a microscope, hack a green laser and a cheap webcam lens into a projector. Check out the video below to see the projector in action. Over at Hackteria, user Dusjagr shares a clever tutorial on how to hack a laser and some odd parts into a projector intended for microscopic subjects. With a strong enough light source, a properly spaced lens assembly, and a slide or petri dish filled with something of interest, you can create microscope projector. Curious how it would work and what the results would look like? Check out this demonstration video: That wiggling creature you see in the video is a nematode from a sample of pond water. • Tools to simulate mobile devices on a desktop to test websites

    - by Kris
Are there any good tools that can be run on desktop machines (Windows or Linux) that can simulate a mobile device, preferably with some options as to screen size and mobile browser (user agent if not full render engine). I know it is never going to be perfect (especially without an actual touchscreen), but having a tool on our development machines to do what testing we can that way would be very useful.

  • Desktop keyboard behaves like laptop keyboard when numlock is on

    - by lstone
I have fully updated ubuntu 12.04 installed on my desktop. The problem is when I turn on NumLock, the keyboard behaves like a laptop keyboard making the keys "mjkluio789" correspond to "0-9". I've had a laptop where such behavior was expected due to absence of a separate numpad. I'm using an iBall USB keyboard and it has a numpad section unlike laptop keyboards(http://iball.co.in/Product.aspx?c=2).

  • Watson Ties Against Human Jeopardy Opponents

    - by ETC
In January we showed you a video of Waton in a practice round against Jeopardy champions Ken Jennings and Brad Rutter. Last night they squared off in a real round of Jeopardy with Watson in a tie with Rutter. Watson held his own against the two champions leveraging the 90 IBM Power 750 servers, 2,880 processors, and the 16TB of memory driving him to his full advantage. It was impressive to watch the round unfold and to see where Watson shined and where he faltered. Check out the video below to footage of Watson in training and then in action on Jeopardy. Pay special attention to the things that trip him up. Watson answers cut and dry questions with absolute lighting speed but stumbles when it comes to nuances in language–like finis vs. terminus in the train question that Jennings answered correctly. We’re no stranger to cool Minecraft creations, but this project takes Minecraft design to a whole new level. An industrious teen has built functional graphing calculator out of Minecraft blocks. • DIY LEGO Settlers of Catan Board Mixes Two Geeky Hobbies in One

    - by Jason Fitzpatrick
While Settlers of Catan (a modular board game) and LEGO (a modular building system) seems destined to fit perfectly together, the execution of a functional Catan board out of LEGO bricks is tricky. Check out this polished build to see it done right. Courtesy of LEGO enthusiast Micheal Thomas, this Settlers of Catan build overcomes the problem of fitting the numerous modular Catan board pieces together by using an underlying framework to provided a preset pocket for each tile. The framework also doubles as a perfect place to lady down the roads and settlements pieces in the game. Currently the project is listed in LEGO Cuusoo–a sort of LEGOland version of Kickstarter–so pay it a visit and log a vote in support of the project. • Lubuntu Desktop messed up for logged in user, but not for guest

    - by RPi Awesomeness
I recently upgraded my laptop from Lubuntu 12.04 to 14.04.1 and the upgrade process seemed to go fine. However, when I went to login as my normal user, I encountered an issue. The background loaded up, but none of LXDE or LXPanel showed up, leaving me with an empty desktop and nothing else except two errors. I thought that this was weird, so I just figured something had been messed up and would be fixed by a reboot. But it wasn't. I then tried logging in as guest, and it's just fine. I checked the ~/.xsession-errors file (for my main user, not guest, did it via TTY1) and this is what I got: Script for ibus started at run_im. Script for auto started at run_im. Script for default started at run_im. init: Unable to register as subreaper: Invalid argument init: lxsession main process (1649) killed by TERM signal init: Disconnected from notified D-Bus bus init: job dbus failed to stop init: job upstart-dbus-session-bridge failed to stop init: job upstart-dbus-system-bridge failed to stop init: job upstart-file-bridge failed to stop I also read the sometimes removing the ~/.Xauthority file can help, if the ownership is messed up. ls -l /home/MYUSER/.Xauthority tells me -rw------- 1 MYUSER MYUSER 60 Aug 16 09:57 /home/MYUSER/.Xauthority. Should that be root or something else, or should I try deleting that and ~/.profile. Here's what ~/.profile looks like: # ~/.profile: executed by the command interpreter for login shells. # This file is not read by bash(1), if ~/.bash_profile or ~/.bash_login # exists. # see /usr/share/doc/bash/examples/startup-files for examples. # the files are located in the bash-doc package. # the default umask is set in /etc/profile; for setting the umask # for ssh logins, install and configure the libpam-umask package. #umask 022 # if running bash if [ -n "$BASH_VERSION" ]; then # include .bashrc if it exists if [ -f "$HOME/.bashrc" ]; then . "$HOME/.bashrc" fi fi # set PATH so it includes user's private bin if it exists if [ -d "$HOME/bin" ] ; then PATH="$HOME/bin:$PATH" fi Should I post the output of dmesg? I'll try and get a screenshot, but does anyone have any idea what could be causing the desktop (LXDE/LXPanel) not to display? EDIT I attempted removing the ~/.XAuthority file, but that didn't seem to do anything.
