  • [Ruby] Why do I have to URI.encode even safe characters for Net::HTTP requests?

    I was trying to send a GET request to Twitter (user ID replaced for privacy reasons) using Net::HTTP: url = URI.parse("http://api.twitter.com/1/friends/ids.json?user_id=12345") resp = Net::HTTP.get_response(url) this throws an exception in Net::HTTP: NoMethodError: undefined method empty?' for #<URI::HTTP:0x59f5c04> from /System/Library/Frameworks/Ruby.framework/Versions/1.8/usr/lib/ruby/1.8/net/http.rb:1470:ininitialize' just by coincidence, I stumbled upon a similar code snippet, which used URI.encode prior to URI.parse, so I copied that and tried again: url = URI.parse(URI.encode("http://api.twitter.com/1/friends/ids.json?user_id=12345")) resp = Net::HTTP.get_response(url) now it works fine, but why? There are no reserved characters that need escaping in the URL I mentioned, so why do I have to call URI.encode for get_response to succeed?

    This is not a homework question, but rather my intention to know if this is what it takes to learn programming. I keep loggin into TopCoder not to actually participate but to get the basic understand of how the problems are solved. But to my knowledge I don't understand what the problem is and how to translate the problem into an algorithm that can solve it. Just now I happen to look at ACM ICPC 2010 World Finals which is being held in china. The teams were given problem sets and one of them is this: Given at most 100 points on a plan with distinct x-coordinates, find the shortest cycle that passes through each point exactly once, goes from the leftmost point always to the right until it reaches the rightmost point, then goes always to the left until it gets back to the leftmost point. Additionally, two points are given such that the the path from left to right contains the first point, and the path from right to left contains the second point. This seems to be a very simple DP: after processing the last k points, and with the first path ending in point a and the second path ending in point b, what is the smallest total length to achieve that? This is O(n^2) states, transitions in O(n). We deal with the two special points by forcing the first path to contain the first one, and the second path contain the second one. Now I have no idea what I am supposed to solve after reading the problem set. and there's an other one from google code jam: Problem In a big, square room there are two point light sources: one is red and the other is green. There are also n circular pillars. Light travels in straight lines and is absorbed by walls and pillars. The pillars therefore cast shadows: they do not let light through. There are places in the room where no light reaches (black), where only one of the two light sources reaches (red or green), and places where both lights reach (yellow). Compute the total area of each of the four colors in the room. Do not include the area of the pillars. Input * One line containing the number of test cases, T. Each test case contains, in order: * One line containing the coordinates x, y of the red light source. * One line containing the coordinates x, y of the green light source. * One line containing the number of pillars n. * n lines describing the pillars. Each contains 3 numbers x, y, r. The pillar is a disk with the center (x, y) and radius r. The room is the square described by 0 = x, y = 100. Pillars, room walls and light sources are all disjoint, they do not overlap or touch. Output For each test case, output: Case #X: black area red area green area yellow area Is it required that people who program should be should be able to solve these type of problems?   • Move flag for follow of a specific color to a folder in Outlook 2003

    I have a user request to be able to create a rule that would move an email in outlook 2003 that the user flagged for follow up to a specific folder. That seemed simple enough till he requested that depending on the flag color they were to be moved to a specific folder. Issue is that in outlook 2003 that's not an option when creating a rule. I know that this is very straight forward in outlook 2007 and 2010 and using the categories feature is very convenient as it displays as a list when you right click.... Though in 2003 categories are not so convenient. as an example the user will flag for follow up as so... Red Flag for sales Blue Flag for requests Green Flag for personal They want a rule that will move all items with a red flag to the sales folder, Green flag to the requests folder and so on....   • How to calibrate a HDTV that is being used as monitor?

    I have a HDTV I am using as a second monitor. The first monitor, is a real computer monitor, not a TV and has a fantastic image. The second one, the HDTV has a good image, but it is a little bit blurred and has the problem you can see on the picture below, a kind of red halo around the edges. I think it has something to do with red contrast. Other colors show this problem too, specially the green. The problem is that the TV has no contrast adjustment. Instead it has something called IRE 10 points and IRE 2 points. Taking IRE 10 for example, it has 4 controls for each of the 10 points: luminosity, R, G and B. I could not find a page where I can understand what this IRE is and how should I adjust this. Can someone tell me how should I proceed to calibrate this TV for best picture? thanks for any help.

  • How to find a coding buddy

    I was reading Jeff Atwood's blog and he mentioned that he was suffering from code-paralysis (he called it analysis paralysis, but I feel like it's also code paralysis) when he didn't have a code buddy: http://www.codinghorror.com/blog/ Unfortunately I think that Jeff has set the bar a bit high, because he only works with developers who are really amazing. The only reason really amazing developers would work with me is if I was really amazing too, but sometimes I don't feel that amazing... the only thing I feel is that if I had a coding buddy I could be amazing :). I'm working on a project and I don't have many friends that are programmers, let alone friends that have time to spend on extracurricular activities. Jeff seems to have been able to find like-minded people that are actually willing to work together. I feel like I'm in a code-paralysis stage too and I need some coding buddies, where would I find some? How would I approach them?

    Is it possible to write C# code as below and send email using mnetwork in different country? MSExchangeWebServiceURL = mail.something.com/ews/exchange.asmx It's a web service URL. This works great when I run the same code from home network, my friends home network anywhere around, but when I run it from my client's location in Columbia it fails. I have a valid user name and password on that Exchange Server. Is there any configuration that I can set to achieve this? BTW this code below works when I run it within office network and any network within any home network. I have tried it at least with five friends network in Plano, Texas. I want this code to work running from any network in another country. My client in Columbia can connect to the web service using a browser using the same user name and password, but when I run the code above it is not able to connect to our web service.

  • FBML in Rails views using Facebooker

    Hi all, I have successfully wired up a Facebook Connect application and everything is working fine. I can sign new users up with Facebook, or I can link existing users with Facebook. No problems there. However, now I am trying to add an Invite page, where a user can see which of their Friends have the application, and then show them a Facebook FMBL Multi Select form to invite friends into it. Here is the documentation for that FBML tag. http://wiki.developers.facebook.com/index.php/Connect/Integrating_an_Invite_Form_into_Your_Website#Creating_a_Full_Multi-friend_Selector_Request_or_Invite However, I cannot get this to work within my Rails view. Do I need to setup something special to use FBML in my Rails views? THIS IS NOT A CANVAS Application, meaning I want people to come to my site and not visit the page through facebook, but I feel like I am missing something. Thank you! Kent

  • Tmux causes Emacs glitch

    Recently I started using Tmux, but I noticed that it causes a strange Emacs glitch. When I open source code for elisp or haskell, the comments aren't highlighted. Only the comment sign is (; in case of elisp, -- in case of haskell). The rest of the commented line is in normal colour. When I run Emacs outside of Tmux everything works as expected - the whole commented line is highlighted in a colour denoting a comment. Any ideas why this is happening? SOLUTION: Based on Stefan's comment I added this to my .emacs file: (custom-set-variables (custom-set-faces '(font-lock-comment-face ((((class color) (min-colors 8) (background dark)) (:foreground "red")))))) Now the comments are displayed in red, just like comment delimiters.

  • Looking for an easier Skype video chat alternative

    Is there any software 'easier to use' than Skype - ie to get a video conversation going you have to turn on the computer, make sure the speakers are turned on, make sure the web cam is connected, make sure you click answer with Video... I would like to buy a 'single red button' which does all of the above. - Any recommendations? Update @Eric Koslow comment My original question title was "Is there any software/hardware 'easier to use' than Skype?" So the answer is not necessarily a computer running a program, although it might be. I realise Skype makes a good attempt at helping to ensure speakers and web cam are working and helps you to sort them out if they are not, and for a person who isnt computer phobic this should be enough. However I am interested if there is anything available that is 'easier' than this - ie I'm looking for my 'single' red button. ie the mobile phone with video call maybe the closest answer so far, but I would prefer something as 'free' as Skype is.

Then I move on to 3rd steps: yum --enablerepo=remi install httpd php php-common But it says: error getting repository data for remi, repository not found. Why is it like that?

  • Prevent Casual Piracy for Simple Utility

    I've written a small utility that I wish to sell for less than $10. My primary concern is "casual piracy". The scenario that plays out in my mind is this: User buys the program, enjoys using it and tells their friends. The friends copy the application to their USB drives and take it home - using the application for free (maybe never realizing they should have purchased it. Since I've got absolutely no protection built in, it would just be a simple copy'n paste to pirate the app. The users who would be using the app are in close proximity to each other (work in the same environment), so casual piracy would likely occur frequently. Any ideas? Keeping in mind the app is cheap (partly to reduce casual piracy), and the level of effort to write the app hasn't been very demanding. Update: the app will run on any system that supports .NET 3.5.

  • How should I build a privacy drop-down (select) menu?

    I'm trying to build something similar to Facebook's privacy selection menu, except without the 'custom' option. It will only list a few options such as 'show to all', 'show to friends only', or 'completely hidden'. Right now I'm thinking of using simple JavaScript to change a hidden input field to the new value they click on, so if they clicked on the division for 'show to friends only' it would change the corresponding field, say 'email_privacy', to 1. Is there a better way to do this or am I pretty much on track? P.S. I am not planning on using a select element, I was planning on building a custom drop-down menu using CSS since select elements are so highly non-customizable. I'm doing it this way to save space, rather than having this massive selection menu at the right which takes up a bunch of space. Note: I'm not really interested in using jQuery, that's just extra libraries and crap that I don't want to load. I can do it in JavaScript just as easily so I might as well use that.

    After reading this post on Stackoverflow Google plus popup box when hovering over thumbnail? I was inspirted to add it on my site. I managed to do so and the script adds the contacts to my database. So far awesome! However, my problem (and also appears in the example) is it does not display the "checked" value... so the user will never know if they already added them to their list or not. Is the correct way to display checked values with PHP?
