  • How can I debug a Perl program that suddenly exits?

    I have Perl program based on IO::Async, and it sometimes just exits after a few hours/days without printing any error message whatsoever. There's nothing in dmesg or /var/log either. STDOUT/STDERR are both autoflush(1) so data shouldn't be lost in buffers. It doesn't actually exit from IO::Async::Loop->loop_forever - print I put there just to make sure of that never gets triggered. Now one way would be to keep peppering the program with more and more prints and hope one of them gives me some clue. Is there better way to get information what was going on in a program that made it exit/silently crash?

  • Why does the VS2005 debugger not report "base." values properly? (was "Why is this if statement fail

    I'm working on an existing class that is two steps derived from System.Windows.Forms.Combo box. The class overrides the Text property thus: public override string Text { get { return this.AccessibilityObject.Value; } set { if (base.Text != value) { base.Text = value; } } } The reason given for that "get" is this MS bug: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/814346 However, I'm more interested in the fact that the "if" doesn't work. There are times where "base.Text != value" is true and yet pressing F10 steps straight to the closing } of the "set" and the Text property is not changed. I've seen this both by just checking values in the debugger, and putting a conditional breakpoint on that only breaks when the "if" statement's predicate is true. How on earth can "if" go wrong? The class between this and ComboBox doesn't touch the Text property. The bug above shouldn't really be affecting anything - it says it's fixed in VS2005. Is the debugger showing different values than the program itself sees? Update I think I've found what is happening here. The debugger is reporting value incorrectly (including evaluating conditional breakpoints incorrectly). To see this, try the following pair of classes: class MyBase { virtual public string Text { get { return "BaseText"; } } } class MyDerived : MyBase { public override string Text { get { string test = base.Text; return "DerivedText"; } } } Put a breakpoint on the last return statement, then run the code and access that property. In my VS2005, hovering over base.Text gives the value "DerivedText", but the variable test has been correctly set to "BaseText". So, new question: why does the debugger not handle base properly, and how can I get it to?

  • Strange phantom header margin bug html/css

    So I'm creating this website and there is a strange untraceable bug that causes the header to move down 10 or so pixels. On a refresh the header could be correct or it could be broken.     This is strange: DateList@AbsoluteTime[596523] returns {2078, 7, 2, 2, 42, 9.7849} But DateList@AbsoluteTime[596524] returns {1942, 5, 26, 20, 28, 39.5596} The question: What's going on? Note that AbsoluteTime with an integer argument is undocumented. (I think I now know what it's doing but figured this is useful to have as a StackOverflow question for future reference; and I'm curious if there's some reason for that magic 596523 number.)

  • How to identify deadlock conditions in a third-party application?

    I am using a third-party application to handle batch CD audio extraction via multiple FireWire attached devices, but the application frequently (though non-deterministically) hangs during the extraction. I suspect that the multithreaded application is deadlocking over some shared resource. The developer, however, suspects the problem lies elsewhere but is not addressing the problem at this time. I would like to be able to do some legwork on my end to a) prove the condition exists and b) ideally point him in the right direction. The problems: while I used to be a programmer, it's been awhile and I need to shake off the dust (last work I did was back in '99 and it was under Solaris, while the application runs under XP). Rather than there being a dearth of information online, there's almost too much to digest. Are there any suggested guides or tutorials that might help me get back up to speed sufficient enough to help identify and/or diagnose the deadlock, or are there tools or approaches that I should study up on to aid me in my task?     I have a lot of websites which are using the same CMS, and they are hosted in 3 seperated servers, only one of this servers has a problem with retrieving the title, description, and the image of any url, and in the FaceBook debugger I get this error: Could not retrieve data from URL. From previous questions, I read that the reason may be an HTML error, but as I said before on other servers there is no problem using the same CMS. You can try putting this URL for example in the debugger: http://www.shaharah.net/2010/news-10054.htm Also, other websites on the same server which are using another CMS, or is just HTML pages are also not retrieved.     Given any object in Ruby (on Rails), how can I write a method so that it will display that object's instance variable names and its values, like this: @x: 1 @y: 2 @link_to_point: #<Point:0x10031b298 @y=20, @x=38> I also want to be able to print <br> to the end of each instance variable's value so as to print them out nicely on a webpage. the difficulty now seems to be that not every instance variable has an accessor, so it can't be called with obj.send(var_name) (the var_name has the "@" removed, so "@x" becomes "x")

  • Is there any difference between SQL running in code vs the MySQL command line?

    I have a SQL update statement I am running from inside a PHP program. It is prepared and then executed. When I run it in PHP, it reports a constraint violation. When I run the exact same statement from the command line (which I am getting via dBug()), it works with no errors. This sounds impossible, so I keep looking for differences between the statements. The only thing I can see is that when I execute it with an array of arguments, they all appear to be chars, when some should be integers. Any suggestions for where to look? I can post the code, but that does not seem like it would be helpful, because the code works.

Both temp tables are 3300 items long. The inner select executes in under a second. All strings are nvarchar(249). All IDs are int. Any ideas? I executed it (it's in a stored proc) for over 12 minutes without it finishing.

    Hello, I have a strange bug. I launch a PHP Unit test Suite. At the beginning, it executes a big query to initialize the database. If I put a breakpoint just after the execution of the sql, there is no problem and my tests pass. If I don't put any break point, they don't pass and say that the tables don't exist! It works as if the sql query was asynchronous! Do you have an idea of the bug? Or how to debug that? Thanks a lot in advance for your help, I'm lost! Farf

    I am using System.out.println in my code to track the execution of a program and get some useful output. This creates results like this in the console: Main function. Program starts. Method getArea. Getting values Method getSide. Side is 6 Method getArea. First value is 6 Method getSide. Side is 8 Method getArea. Second value is 8 Method getArea. Area is 48 Main function. The final area is 48 I would like to create tha method, which adds a space in front of the output every time the code goes deeper in the method call stack. For example, the same code but instead of using System.out.println, now with Misc.smartPrintln: Main function. Program starts. Method getArea. Getting values Method getSide. Side is 6 Method getArea. First value is 6 Method getSide. Side is 8 Method getArea. Second value is 8 Method getArea. Area is 48 Main function. The final area is 48 The method would have this definition: public static void smartPrintln(String string); I don't know how to implement this functionality. Any ideas how to solve this? And, could the use of a logger offer this functionality?

  • Facebook Open Graph Debugger Error

    Hi I am new to programming and have tried to make a facebook app with open graph beta tutorial. I have done exactly as described in the tutorial but when i try to use the debug tool it gives me an error: Extraneous Property: Objects of this type do not allow properties named og:app_id. I have noticed and searched that its doing this because the tag needs to be <fb:app_id>. I checked my file it says fb:app_id only, but the raw data that pulls up on the debug tool shows meta property="og:app_id" content="267029796703617" even though i have changed and uploaded with fb:app_id. I have checked my page several times and tried some possible solutions but have had no success. Can someone help me fix this.

  • How do I tell gdb how long my zero-length array is?

    Slightly oxymoronic title! Bonus points for Xcode answer but it's a gdb question. If I have a standard, statically sized array gdb will print all its elements [and Xcode will let me browse through it] but if I have a zero length array, it won't, because it doesn't know. Obviously I can print the array indexes one by one, but I'd like a dump of the whole thing. How do I tell gdb how much space I have allocated for the array to allow it to print the array (or to allow Xcode to view the array). Is it even possible?

  • Appverifier and Visual Studio for leak detection

    Hi, I'm running Appverifier in an application. When it detects a memory leaks the logs saids "Address of the leaked allocation. Run !heap -p -a to get additional information about the allocation." I guess that's when you are running in Windbg, is there any way to access the allocation stack trace from inside Visual Studio ?

  • Cross vertion line matching.

    I'm considering how to do automatic bug tracking and as part of that I'm wondering what is available to match source code line numbers (or more accurate numbers mapped from instruction pointers via something like addr2line) in one version of a program to the same line in another. (Assume everything is in some kind of source control and is available to my code) The simplest approach would be to use a diff tool/lib on the files and do some math on the line number spans, however this has some limitations: It doesn't handle cross file motion. It might not play well with lines that get changed It doesn't look at the information available in the intermediate versions. It provides no way to manually patch up lines when the diff tool gets things wrong. It's kinda clunky Before I start diving into developing something better: What already exists to do this? What features do similar system have that I've not thought of?
