  English is not my first language, but since the keywords in programming languages are English words, I usually find it easy to read source code as English sentences: if (x > 10) f(); = "If variable x is greater than 10, then call function f." while (i < 10) ++i; = "While variable i is less than 10, increase i by 1." But how a for loop is supposed to be read? for (i = 0; i < 10; ++i) f(i); = ??? I mean, I know what a for loop is and how it works. My problem is only that I don't know what the English word "for" exactly means in for loops.

  I'm reading "Professional Team Foundation Server 2010" by Wrox, and in an advantages/disadvantages list, the said: "Like CVS, SVN makes use of .svn directories inside the source folders to store state of the local working copy, and to allow synchronization with the server. However, it can have the affect of polluting the local source tree, and can cause performance issues wiht very large projects or files." What does the bit about pollution mean? I've used SVN for C# & ASP.NET projects for a long time and haven't encountered any problems. What probably does this quote think I should have been watching out for?

I know your standard run-of-the-mill stuff like navigating around and manipulating files and permissions and using pipes and running applications, but what are they looking for when they say something like that? I'm aware there's no end to what you can do with the command line, but I was under the impression that after a certain point it's the sort of thing that only benefits server/system administrators.

• Should I replace libapache2-mod-php5-filter with libapache2-mod-php5 on Debian 6 Apache 2.2.16?

  Upgrading various virtual machines we are having an issue with the Debian package upgrade to version 2.2.16 The upgrade (surprisingly) seems to remove libapache2-mod-php5 replacing it with libapache2-mod-php5-filter. This gave us some headache as the php.ini was pointing to the "old" one and some of the apache.conf conditional module rules stopped working. We can fix all those but we can't figure out if there would be any issues if we just "reversed" this and simply install libapache2-mod-php5 again and load that module instead of the "filter" one or in there is anyway to "alias" a module. I tend to think that the change "has a reason" but after reading apache2 and php5: module or filter I understand the module differences are to do with post delivery security issues.

However, on a OS X Lion Server I'm testing out, I see this "auto-generated" language in the master.cf file: # ==== Begin auto-generated section ======================================== # This section of the master.cf file is auto-generated by the Server Admin # Mail backend plugin whenever mails settings are modified. smtp inet n - n - 1 postscreen smtpd pass - - n - - smtpd -o receive_override_options=no_address_mappings The problem is, to enable the filter the same area of the master.cf file has to be changed to have an entry like this: smtp inet n - - - - smtpd -o content_filter=mytest_filter:dummy So, it looks like the line would be blown away every I make a change in Server Admin. Is there a better place for me to put the call to the filter such that it's persistent? I appreciate any assistance and/or guidance!

  I have a log that our web application builds. Each month it contains around 16,000 entries of a string with about the average sentence worth of text. To filter/search through these in our admin panel the script uses preg_match() but this seems to be taking ages and timing out on the 30sec limit. I have isolated that it is indeed the preg_match() that causes the time out. Is there a more efficient way to search through values in a large array for a users input?

• NTP daemon or ntpdate doesn't synchronize

  I'm having some problems with synchronization with an NTP server. 1) The NTP daemon doesn't sync the system clock at all, even though it's running (confirmed with /etc/init.d/ntp status).   I installed and set up routing-filter as described on the gem documentation page. https://github.com/svenfuchs/routing-filter It works for the default locale. For example, if I set up my default locale as :en,the site is in English, and if I set my default locale as :zh, the site is in Chinese. www.site.com/zh/home (the default locale path /en is automatically added to the URL) But how can I make my site support BOTH languages? when the default locale is :zh, I tried to change the URL by substituting the "zh" with "en" but the page is still in Chinese, not English. Is this something not supported by the routing-filter gem? If not, is there some other gem I can use? Or have I not set up the routing-filter gem properly? Thanks!

  This is what I want to do : A servlet is called.Before a servlet is called , the request is intercepted by a filter. Filter gets some details out from the request,sets them as an attribute and the forwards it to a servlet via chain.doFilter(request,response). Request finally reaches the servlet. Servlet gets the attribute set by the filter before and sets a new attribute by another name. Then it forwards it to some jsp page where the page gets the attribute and processes it. How do I do this ? I know how to write a filter and a servlet but how do I forward it to a jsp page from the servlet or is there any other way to achieve this ?

When I try and play an audio file, it appears to load fine, and the media position bar displays the progress, and it says it is playing, but I can't here any thing through my speakers. I can hear game audio, web audio, and audio from SMPlayer just fine, but with VLC, I can't here anything. It would eventually start working after I messed around with the audio settings, but it happened every restart. I eventually switched to SMPlayer, but now I need some of the features that VLC offers, but I still can't use VLC. At this point, the audio can not be heard at all, and the method I used before, messing around with the audio settings, isn't getting me anywhere.   Recently I had to write a DAX formula containing a LASTDATE within the logical condition of a FILTER: I found that its behavior was not the one I expected and I further investigated. At the end, I wrote my findings in this article on SQLBI, which can be applied to any Time Intelligence function with a <dates> argument.The key point is that when you write LASTDATE( table[column] )in reality you obtain something like LASTDATE( CALCULATETABLE( VALUES( table[column] ) ) )which converts an existing row context into a filter context.Thus, if you have something like FILTER( table, table[column] = LASTDATE( table[column] ) the FILTER will return all the rows of table, whereas you probably want to use FILTER( table, table[column] = LASTDATE( VALUES( table[column] ) ) )so that the existing filter context before executing FILTER is used to get the result from VALUES( table[column] ), avoiding the automatic expansion that would include a CALCULATETABLE that would hide the existing filter context.If after reading the article you want to get more insights, read the Jeffrey Wang's post here.In these days I'm speaking at SQLRally Nordic 2012 in Copenhagen and I will be in Cologne (Germany) next week for a SSAS Tabular Workshop, whereas Alberto will teach the same workshop in Amsterdam one week later.
