• Private domain purchase with paypal: how to prevent fraud?

  I am finally going to buy a domain I have been looking at. The domain owner wants me to give him my Godaddy account information and send him the payment via Paypal gift, so that there will be no extra charges. Should this cause suspicion? Does Paypal offer any kind of fraud protection? What is the best way to protect myself from fraud in this situation, without the need for escrow services, such as escrow.com? Any advice welcomed. • How to apply a filter to the screen of a running program?

  The idea is to take old games without modifying them, but have the graphics card apply a series of filters to their output before sending them to the monitor. A very crude example would be to take a game that has a resolution of 640x480 and do: Increase the resolution to 1280x960 Apply a blur (low pass filter) Apply a sharpen (1 + high pass filter) These steps may not necessarily be the best to improve the visuals of an old game, but there are a lot of techniques that are well-known in image processing for this purpose. The question is, do the (NVidia) graphics cards give the ability to load a program that modifies the screen before sending it to the monitor? If so, how are they called and what terminology should I use to search? I would be comfortable with doing the programming myself if this ability is part of a library. Also, would the solution be different between Windows and Linux? If so, either is fine, since most of the games are probably runnable by wine.

  This is a question about preferences. Assume a programming language offers these two options to make a string with some variables: "Hello, my name is ". name ." and I'm ". age ." years old." StringFormat("Hello, my name is $0 and I'm $1 years old.", name, age) Which do you prefer and why? I have found myself using both without any clear reason to pick either. Considering micro-optimizations is not within the scope of this question. Localization has been mentioned as a reason to go with option #2 and I think it's a very valid reason and deserves to be mentioned here. However, would opinions differ based on aesthetic viewpoints?

  How does one fix (or report an error) on an 'immutable' help.ubuntu.community wiki page? I am a registered member of the wiki. On http://help.ubuntu.com/community/FreeNX under the section: Installing the FreeNX server on Ubuntu Karmic (9.10) and higher, step #2, bjorn-nostvold erroneously changed on 2013-01-24 "add-apt-repository" to "apt-add-repository". The original "add-apt-repository" is correct - at least on my Karmic (9.10) version of Ubuntu. By the number of confused people I've found via google search, this seems to be throwing off a lot of people, myself included.

  I'm a beginner teaching myself to code but I would like he insight of the PSE community and helping choose where to start. My main objective is to be able to create a basic website to first test my business idea and from there iterate on it quickly to minimise my learning time. The most important criteria for me is speed. An example of speed would be pre-built components available open source and not having to write one from scratch. From my research, this seems to be a death match between the following languages and frameworks: PHP and CakePHP Python and Django Ruby and Rails Assumptions: I am going to be equally good (or bad) in all 3. It is going to be equally easy to find competent developers in either language. I know this to be false already by lets assume that it is. This question is not meant to karma whore as I've seen how passionate some of these standoff questions have been and I'll be happy to turn it into a community wiki.

  I can't find myself origin of Clicker like games. It's where the goal is to gain points through clicks and acquired enhancement. There's only one strategy in the game - deciding how efficiently spend point on enhancement (see formulas). I've seen many games like this, but it seems that most don't have a home page or have an unknown publisher. Some well known games of this type: Candy Box Cookie Clicker Cow Clicker Who is first implemented this idea (not only clicking but with investment model - when player must decide what improve to faster gather points)?

• Linux Programmer moving to Windows

  I am a fairly proficient Linux programmer. I have been coding in Linux for 4 years, for both personal reasons and for profit. During those 4 years I have not even owned a computer running the Windows operating system. I am looking to expand my horizons into Windows programming, but am finding myself overwhelmed with the lack of what I perceive to be standardization. I feel as though different compilers follow different conventions, and all of the worthwhile IDEs cost money. Whats worse is that so many of the Tutorials are just terrible. If anyone else has taken the switch from Linux to Windows programming, what was the most helpful. What are the most straightforward IDEs and tutorials for using the API. I am looking to do mainly C and C++ development, along with some x86. I have found MASM primarily suits my needs for the latter.

• Architectural advice - websockets javascript/php integration

  Myself and a friend have started making a game, he's likely to be using impact.js for the user interaction etc, but we need multiplayer functionality so some form of websockets for TCP connections etc. So we were thinking impact.js into socket.io and node.js. However, user accounts, ecommerce, session handling and social media integration will all be handled with Codeigniter (PHP), my question is, is it wise to have node.js running in parallel with Codeigniter, or if this is even possible? If not, if you were to create a multiplayer online game utilising ecomms to buy credits and user accounts, how would you go about this from a structural position and what engines/frameworks would you recommend? • What are the technial and programming requirements for writing a stealth keylogger?

(I don't want to name the vendor as I know how good Google queries are against StackExchange websites). • Attempting to GREP details of a Java error

  I'm running Ubuntu 11 and I'm having some issues with grep. I have a shell script (see below) which essentially checks if a certain Java program of mine is running, if not it runs it. That part works out great! If my Java application throws any kind of exception however I would like to capture that information and email it to myself. How can I go about checking to see if the call to java -jar /bin/MyApp.jar fails? I tried piping it to grep, but that doesn't seem to work. • Should an object know its own ID?

  obj.id seems fairly common and also seems to fall within the range of something an object could know about itself. I find myself asking why should my object know its own id? It doesn't seem to have a reason to have it? One of the main reason for it existing is retrieve it, and so my repositories need to know it, and thus use it for database interaction. I also once encountered a problem where I wanted to serialize an object to JSON for a RESTful API where the id did not seem to fit in the payload, but only the URI and including it in the object made that more difficult. Should an object know it's own id? why or why not?

  I got a problem. I'm willing to dual boot ubuntu 12.04 on my desktop. After i made a bootable USB ubuntu on it i'm going to install it. I boot it and I choose Install ubuntu roughly said. The problem is the following, It seems that when i press enter to start the install he switches of to my intergrated graphic card. I looked up in my bios what my primary graphic card selection is and it was on PCI Express (the option it supossed to be). So I'm clueless right now. • how do i stop root from running a program

  I would like to prevent my root user from running certain applications that can change the permissions of files which in turn prevents normal users from running those applications again. for example, if i sudo to root, and then run thunderbird from the command prompt, it changes the permissions of files within my home dir / profile so i can no longer run it as a normal user; what i would like to do is prevent root from running thunderbird and hence stop this user error from repeating itself. any suggestions? to clarify, if i have a lot of administration to do i use "sudo -s" which gives me a root shell, its just once a year or so, i shoot myself in the foot.

• What caused you to stop using UML tools on your team?

  There seems to be plenty of good, free UML tools. I hear about UML tools being used by large organizations, and they seem to have plenty of advocates. However, in my career I have never seen them used beyond "dabbling". Now, I have seen many UML diagrams drawn on whiteboards, and I use them myself all the time, on paper, to think about problems. I've also seen articles such as this one claiming why developers don't use UML, but the arguments just don't land with me. Frankly, this seems like an opportunity for a start-up if one can figure out why developers really don't use them, and solve those problems. So I'm asking anyone here who has attempted to use UML tools in a team, and stopped, this question: "why did you stop?" I'm especially interested in experience from agile teams. I am looking for concrete experience, not hypothetical opinion. Thanks.

I have an image inside a container, and to allow for multiple screen sizes, I am setting all dimensions in % rather than pixels. in iphone portrait mode, everything is fine. • Is the phrase "never reinvent the wheel" suitable for students?

  I find myself constantly running into this expression "don't reinvent the wheel" or "never reinvent the wheel" when I ask some questions on SO. They tell you to use some frameworks or existing packages. I know where this attitude is coming from since it's unwise to waste time on something others have already solved. Or it that so? As a student, I find by using some code others wrote to solve my problem I can't learn as much as I'd like to, and I gain less insight. And sometimes I think that phrase is mainly for working programmers facing deadlines and not for students like me. Is it that bad to "reinvent the wheel"? Maybe I'm thinking it wrong? Maybe there is a way I can avoid reinventing the wheel and at the same time learn a lot?

• Can I (reasonably) refuse to sign an NDA for pro bono work? [closed]

As a matter of friendship I agreed (orally) not to discuss the details, but now he has a potential investor who wants me to sign a non-disclosure agreement (NDA). Since thus far all my work has been pro bono I told Joe I am not comfortable putting myself under documented legal obligation without some kind of compensation for the risk. (It needn't be strictly financial. I would accept a small ownership stake or possibly even just guaranteed credits in the code and documentation.) Is my request reasonable, or am I just introducing unnecessary complexity?

• Trouble Setting up Open SSH with Putty

  I for the life of me can't seem to get openSSH to work on Ubuntu Server 10.10 with keys I generated in PuttyGen on my Windows machine. After hours of trial and error and web searches I can't get my ssh service to accept my private key! Here is my sshd_config. I generated my public and private keys using Putty in Windows then used a ssh connection to paste my key from putty directly into my authorized_keys2 file located in */etc/ssh/publickeys/authorized_keys2* The authorized_keys2 file looks something like: ssh-rsa AAAAB3NzaC1yc2EAAAA... with no email or anything at the end of it. I just pasted it straight from PuttyGen without using a key comment. I feel like it's not working because of some nuance I am not understanding or some unusual setting or incompatibility. I've restarted the ssh service (and the machine) to no avail. What are some common pitfalls I might have gotten myself into? Is there a simpler way to generate ssh keys that putty can use in windows?
