  Hi all, I am doing some self learning about Patern Matching in Javascript. I got a simple input text field in a HTML web page, and I have done some Javascript to capture the string and check if there are any strange characters other than numbers and characters in the string. But I am not sure if it is correct. • Exposing some live data on a website - New to ASP.NET, need guidelines

  I have a large .NET based system running within the company intranet, which allows winforms users to see some live calculated numbers and a custom winforms control drawn live (but not real-time). The Forms users can also affect the operation of the system. I would like to just show the live numbers on a website, along with the custom control. Nothing needs to come back from the web user, as the web app is meant to be just for monitoring. All the numbers can be calculated at the server. It's been a long time since I touched ASP.NET, and I need to know how to proceed. What are the steps in building and deploying such a website? Any caveats I need to look out for?

• Read multiple strings from a file C++

  Hi I need to read different values stored in a file one by one. So I was thinking I can use ifstream to open the file, but since the file is set up in such a way that a line might contain three numbers, and the other line one number or two numbers I'm not sure how to read each number one by one. I was thinking of using stringstream but I'm not sure if that would work. The file is a format like this. 52500.00 64029.50 56000.00 65500.00 53780.00 77300.00 44000.50 80100.20 90000.00 41000.00 60500.50 72000.00 I need to read each number and store it in a vector. What is the best way to accomplish this? Reading one number at a time even though each line contains a different amount of numbers?

• Duplicates in a sorted java array

  I have to write a method that takes an array of ints that is already sorted in numerical order then remove all the duplicate numbers and return an array of just the numbers that have no duplicates. That array must then be printed out so I can't have any null pointer exceptions. The method has to be in O(n) time, can't use vectors or hashes. This is what I have so far but it only has the first couple numbers in order without duplicates and then just puts the duplicates in the back of the array. I can't create a temporary array because it gives me null pointer exceptions. public static int[] noDups(int[] myArray) { int j = 0; for (int i = 1; i < myArray.length; i++) { if (myArray[i] != myArray[j]) { j++; myArray[j] = myArray[i]; } } return myArray; }

• SSRS Issue: Rounding to nearest .25

  I have an SSRS (2008) report that takes in a raw transactions, then groups and totals them. At the "Total" level, I would like to round the final numbers to the nearest .25, however I cannot find a method to do this. According to what I've read, the Round() function in SSRS only rounds to integers. I have found a couple ways to do it in SQL, but the problem is, I want to do all the calculations with the REAL numbers and just round the result so that I don't introduce a significant amount of error from the real numbers. Here's the best SQL solution I could find: dec(round(number * 4, 0)/4,11,2) as Nearest_Qtr Anyone know how I could do the equivalent in the actual SSRS report? Thanks in advance for the help!

• Index for wildcard match of end of string

  I have a table of phone numbers, storing the phone number as varchar(20). I have a requirement to implement searching of both entire numbers, but also on only the last part of the number, so a typical query will be: SELECT * FROM PhoneNumbers WHERE Number LIKE '%1234' How can I put an index on the Number column to make those searchs efficient? Is there a way to create an index that sorts the records on the reversed string? Another option might be to reverse the numbers before storing them, which will give queries like: SELECT * FROM PhoneNumbers WHERE ReverseNumber LIKE '4321%' However that will require all users of the database to always reverse the string. It might be solved by storing both the normal and reversed number and having the reversed number being updated by a trigger on insert/update. But that kind of solution is not very elegant. Any other suggestions?

  I am attempting to split strings like the following: An item (Item A) which may contain 89798 numbers and letters @ $550.00 4 of Item B @ $420.00 476584 of Item C, with a larger quantity and different currency symbol @ £420.00 into: array( 0 => 1 1 => "some item which may contain 89798 numbers and letters" 2 => $550.00 ); does that make sense? I am looking for a regex pattern which will split the quantity, description, and price (including symbol). the strings will always be: qty x description @ price+symbol so i assume the regex would be something like: `(match a number and only a number) x (get description letters and numbers before the @ symbol) @ (match the currency symbol and price)` How should I approach this?

  I have task to prepare two windows with swing. One contains grid of squares, with random numbers in them. In second I need to load pieces of tiled image and then show them in the correct order, forming tiled image. I've used swing only few times to draw some 2d polylines, so basically I just theoretically now what to do. Ok, so window number 1: I start with creating Jframe for the window. Then I do for loop and in it create 16 JLabels with random numbers in them ? How to set margins between each tile and the whole window ? Window number 2 : So I start the same, but instead of loading numbers I add images ? Now, how can I load image from file and then set it as background ?

  I have a table with lets say 2 columns. id number, and value. Value is a string (var char). Lets say i have a number x, and a list of numbers a1, a2, a3, a4, a5..... where x is not in the list. All of these numbers correspond to a unique row in the table. I want to know if the string value for x in the table is contained in one of the string values for any table entry for a1, a2, a3, a4... Lets say i have these rows: x, aaa a1, bbb a2, ccc a3, ddd a4, aaabbbcc then i want somehow a confirmation that yes, the value for x is included in one of the values in my list of numbers (a4 contains x). I know i can do this in a couple queries and shove it down some PHP and get my answer. But can i do this with one query?

• PHP find if file data is an image

  Imagine I have some file data in a variable $data. I need to determine whether it is an image or not. No need for details such as corrupt images etc. Firs thought would be getting the file mime type by looking at the magic number and then see whether "image" is in the mime type. No such luck, even if I have a "file extension to mime type" script, I don't have a reliable way to get mime from magic number. My next option was to have a reasonable list of image file magic numbers and consult them. However, it relatively difficult to find such magic numbers (gif for instance has different magic numbers, some of which could pretty rare - if memory serves me right). A better idea would be some linux program which can do this kind of thing. Any ideas? I'm running RHEL and PHP 5.3. I've got root access - ie able to install stuff if needed. - Chris.

• Efficient way to access a mapping of identifiers in Python

  I am writing an app to do a file conversion and part of that is replacing old account numbers with a new account numbers. Right now I have a CSV file mapping the old and new account numbers with around 30K records. I read this in and store it as dict and when writing the new file grab the new account from the dict by key. My question is what is the best way to do this if the CSV file increases to 100K+ records? Would it be more efficient to convert the account mappings from a CSV to a sqlite database rather than storing them as a dict in memory?

What should be random is the order in which it is generated. I have the following problem: I have an array with 2000 entries but not each with unique values, for example it starts like this: 11112233333333344445667777777777 and consists of 2000 entries. I would like to generate random numbers and assign each UNIQUE value a separate random number but have an entry for each value So my intended result would look like this: original array: 11112233333333344445667777777777 random numbers: 33334466666666699991778888888888

• How to change the font size in table cells according to cells content ?

  I have an HTML table which has incrementing numbers starting from 0 in its cells (left to right, up to bottom). I fixed in CSS the width and the height of the cells (40px width, 25px height, in my case). When the table becomes larger, the numbers inside it becomes large also (for example, the last number is 1266356). This causes the cells to be wider than I defined in the CSS, which expands the whole table accordingly. Instead, I would like the font of the numbers to be smaller to keep the width of the cell 40px. How can I accomplish this using CSS / Javascript / jQuery ?

  Hi I'm having a hard time getting started to layout code for this problem. I have a fixed amount of random numbers, in this case 8 numbers. R[] = { 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8 }; That are going to be placed in 3 sets of numbers, with the only constraint that each set contain minimum one value, and each value can only be used once. For example: R1[] = { 1, 4 } R2[] = { 2, 8, 5, 6 } R3[] = { 7, 4 } I need to loop through all possible combinations of a set R1, R2, R3. Order is not important, so if the above example happened, I don't need R1[] = { 4, 1 } R2[] = { 2, 8, 5, 6 } R3[] = { 7, 4 } NOR R1[] = { 2, 8, 5, 6 } R2[] = { 7, 4 } R3[] = { 1, 4 } What is a good method?

• "Teach" a computer how to do addition?

  The problem is to learn computer to do addition. Computer have as input a knowladge of a numbers: he "knows" that after 1 goes 2, after 2 goes 3 and so on... Having that data computer can easyly get next number. Next, computer have knowlandge as input that x+0=x and x+(y+1)=(x+1)+y. This axioms let computer to do addition. For example, to add 5 and 3, computer makes following: 5+3 = 5+(2+1) = (5+1)+2 = 6+2 = 6+(1+1) = (6+1)+1 = 7+1 = 8. But this is too long to add numbers in such way. The problem is to develop program which can improve this way of addition using the rules of mathemetics and logic. The goal addition must executed in O(log(N)) time, not O(N) time, N is magnitude of added numbers. Have this program any science value? Is any program can do such things?

• Replacing “if”s with your own number system

  During our second code retreat at Red Gate, the restriction for one of the sessions was disallowing the use of if statements. That includes other constructs that have the same effect, such as switch statements or loops that will only be executed zero or one times. The idea is to encourage use of polymorphism instead, and see just how far it can be used to get rid of “if”s. The main place where people struggled to get rid of numbers from their implementation of Conway’s Game of Life was the piece of code that decides whether a cell is live or dead in the next generation. For instance, for a cell that’s currently live, the code might look something like this: if (numberOfNeighbours == 2 || numberOfNeighbours == 3) { return CellState.LIVE; } else { return CellState.DEAD; } The problem is that we need to change behaviour depending on the number of neighbours each cell has, but polymorphism only allows us to switch behaviour based on the type of a value. To choose the next state of the cell, rather than inspecting the number of neighbours, we ask the number of neighbours for the next state directly: return numberOfNeighbours.LiveCellNextGeneration(); And now we have no “if”s! If C# had double-dispatch, or if we used the visitor pattern, we could move the logic for choosing the next cell out of the number classes, which might feel a bit more natural. I suspect that reimplementing the natural numbers is still going to feel about the same amount of crazy though.

• SQL SERVER – SSMS: Top Object and Batch Execution Statistics Reports

  The month of June till mid of July has been the fever of sports. First, it was Wimbledon Tennis and then the Soccer fever was all over. There is a huge number of fan followers and it is great to see the level at which people sometimes worship these sports. Being an Indian, I cannot forget to mention the India tour of England later part of July. Following these sports and as the events unfold to the finals, there are a number of ways the statisticians can slice and dice the numbers. Cue from soccer I can surely say there is a team performance against another team and then there is individual member fairs against a particular opponent. Such statistics give us a fair idea to how a team in the past or in the recent past has fared against each other, head-to-head stats during World cup and during other neutral venue games. All these statistics are just pointers. In reality, they don’t reflect the calibre of the current team because the individuals who performed in each of these games are totally different (Typical example being the Brazil Vs Germany semi-final match in FIFA 2014). So at times these numbers are misleading. It is worth investigating and get the next level information. Similar to these statistics, SQL Server Management studio is also equipped with a number of reports like a) Object Execution Statistics report and b) Batch Execution Statistics reports. As discussed in the example, the team scorecard is like the Batch Execution statistics and individual stats is like Object Level statistics. The analogy can be taken only this far, trust me there is no correlation between SQL Server functioning and playing sports – It is like I think about diet all the time except while I am eating. Performance – Batch Execution Statistics Let us view the first report which can be invoked from Server Node -> Reports -> Standard Reports -> Performance – Batch Execution Statistics. Most of the values that are displayed in this report come from the DMVs sys.dm_exec_query_stats and sys.dm_exec_sql_text(sql_handle). This report contains 3 distinctive sections as outline below.   Section 1: This is a graphical bar graph representation of Average CPU Time, Average Logical reads and Average Logical Writes for individual batches. The Batch numbers are indicative and the details of individual batch is available in section 3 (detailed below). Section 2: This represents a Pie chart of all the batches by Total CPU Time (%) and Total Logical IO (%) by batches. This graphical representation tells us which batch consumed the highest CPU and IO since the server started, provided plan is available in the cache. Section 3: This is the section where we can find the SQL statements associated with each of the batch Numbers. This also gives us the details of Average CPU / Average Logical Reads and Average Logical Writes in the system for the given batch with object details. Expanding the rows, I will also get the # Executions and # Plans Generated for each of the queries. Performance – Object Execution Statistics The second report worth a look is Object Execution statistics. This is a similar report as the previous but turned on its head by SQL Server Objects. The report has 3 areas to look as above. Section 1 gives the Average CPU, Average IO bar charts for specific objects. The section 2 is a graphical representation of Total CPU by objects and Total Logical IO by objects. The final section details the various objects in detail with the Avg. CPU, IO and other details which are self-explanatory. At a high-level both the reports are based on queries on two DMVs (sys.dm_exec_query_stats and sys.dm_exec_sql_text) and it builds values based on calculations using columns in them: SELECT * FROM    sys.dm_exec_query_stats s1 CROSS APPLY sys.dm_exec_sql_text(sql_handle) AS s2 WHERE   s2.objectid IS NOT NULL AND DB_NAME(s2.dbid) IS NOT NULL ORDER BY  s1.sql_handle; This is one of the simplest form of reports and in future blogs we will look at more complex reports. I truly hope that these reports can give DBAs and developers a hint about what is the possible performance tuning area. As a closing point I must emphasize that all above reports pick up data from the plan cache. If a particular query has consumed a lot of resources earlier, but plan is not available in the cache, none of the above reports would show that bad query. • Why are Awstats, Webalizer, and Google Analytics results so different?

  I realize that comparing Awstats and Webalizer to Google Analytics is like comparing apples to oranges, but each of them track at least basic statistics about visitors and pages. So why are there often very significant differences in their data? For example, comparing Analytics with Awstats using some numbers from a small site over the past week: Awstats 78 unique visitors 205 visits (2.62 visits/visitor) 1,072 pages (5.22 pages/visit) Google Analytics 115 unique visitors 240 visits (2.08 visits/visitor) 1,275 pages (5.31 pages/visit) They're similar on the number of visits, but page views and uniques are quite different. I'm familiar with discrepancies of a much higher magnitude on some larger sites, showing that this trend scales proportionally upward. What is the reason behind the different numbers, even when the data is quite trivial like unique visitors and page loads?

  Oracle Advanced Security is an optional licenced Oracle 11g Database add-on.  Oracle Advanced Security Transparent Data Encryption (TDE) offers two different features:  column encryption and tablespace encryption.  TDE Tablespace Encryption 11.2.0.1 is now certified with Oracle E-Business Suite Release 11i. What is Transparent Data Encryption (TDE) ? Oracle Advanced Security Transparent Data Encryption (TDE) allows you to protect data at rest. TDE helps address privacy and PCI requirements by encrypting personally identifiable information (PII) such as Social Security numbers and credit card numbers. TDE is completely transparent to existing applications with no triggers, views or other application changes required. Data is transparently encrypted when written to disk and transparently decrypted after an application user has successfully authenticated and passed all authorization checks. Authorization checks include verifying the user has the necessary select and update privileges on the application table and checking Database Vault, Label Security and Virtual Private Database enforcement policies.

  People from stackoverflow have been working closely with google team to help them make the panda algorithm more efficient, so I guess they've learned a lot from the google team. Thus they may have done very clever friendly URLs to maximize the page rank. I've seen from time to time very long URLs (can't find where) in stackoverflow, but after a certain "amount" of character there were only numbers, kind of "ok passed this length, SEOs will ignore this so let's put only numbers". I've done a huge work on my framework to make very friendly URLs, and my website can come up with URLs like: http://www.mysite.fr/recherche/region/provence-alpes-cote-d-azur/departement/bouches-du-rhone/categorie-de-metiers/paramedical/ It's very long and I'm wondering if the previous URL won't be mixed with, say, this one: http://www.mysite.fr/recherche/region/provence-alpes-cote-d-azur/departement/bouches-du-rhone/categorie-de-metiers/art/
