• Upgrade Ubuntu Server from 11.04 to 11.10 without internet connection

  We have application software that really likes Ubuntu Server 11.10. I need to upgrade several 11.04 servers to this version. Two questions: The servers that need to be upgraded do not have Internet access in our datacenter due to security reasons. I need to download the updates/upgrades to a secure system and then transfer them to the datacenter servers for installation. Is anyone aware of the steps involved? How/where do I get the 11.10 updates from? I don't see an option on the Ubuntu site for downloading specific versions of the OS and/or upgrades.

  I fell in love with ubuntu when 10.10 was released. It was the perfect OS for me, but then, the 11 and the 12 series came, and I starting hating it (Pun intended) But seriously, I want to stick to ubuntu 10.10, I have the .iso file with me. I want to go ahead and install it. My question is, since its not currently supported, what problems will I face? Will I be eligible for update? I mean atleast till the time it was supported Can I somehow get security updates and patches Will the latest software available still run on ubuntu 10.10 I don't care much about drivers, as much as I care about python, php, apache, wine and other softwares. Will the software center work?and be updates as well? What issues am I most prone to face?

• Delivery terminology and order of magnitude

  What is the standard way of describing how software products are released and the proportionate order of magnitude to which the changes relative to the software product are conveyed? Is Release Update Patch Bug Fix redundant? or Is Update Patch too terse? As an end user I'd think that all bug fixes are patches (insofar as they are not 100% new code) and all patches should be updates (insofar as they don't degrade the product) and all updates should be releases (insofar as they are actually released), but this really doesn't help anyone understand why they need to get them. Then, if the person who makes the software change appends "critical" or "zero-day" in the notes, I would be unwise to leave the changes unapplied.

• distribution update made my close/minimize/maximize window buttons diappear

  I am running an ubuntu/gnome3 environment. While running the upgrade manager on 12.04, I was informed that there was a distribution update but that it was partial. (whatever that means) After a few failed attempts at updating through the manager, I decide to run sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get update. The updates seem to work however, the close/maximize/minimize buttons of all windows have disappeared. I also can no longer use the Alt+Tab function. I tried to post an image but I need more rep (sorry) I have tried to run the updates again but nothing changes. I'm still very new at this. I would appreciate it if you could use simple terms to describe or ask questions. Thanks in advance!

• Auto-Invoke Update Manager to update everything and shutdown after system idle for x minutes?

  I have Ubuntu 10.10 installed on a machine for my parents. The thing is they never request updates from Update Manager even the manager itself prompted them so. Moreover, when they are done with whatever they are doing on Ubuntu, they always leave the computer on. And I always have to come back and shut the machine down. Sometimes, the computer even sit idle for hours. So I want to know whether this is possible in Ubuntu. I am thinking of a script that will be activated after the machine is idle for x minutes. When x minutes have elapsed, Update Manager will automatically update everything listed. (I recall that you need the admin password for this, so is there a workaround?) After all the updates are done, the machine will automatically shutdown. Is this possible?

• Oracle NoSQL Database Exceeds 1 Million Mixed YCSB Ops/Sec

  We ran a set of YCSB performance tests on Oracle NoSQL Database using SSD cards and Intel Xeon E5-2690 CPUs with the goal of achieving 1M mixed ops/sec on a 95% read / 5% update workload. We used the standard YCSB parameters: 13 byte keys and 1KB data size (1,102 bytes after serialization). The maximum database size was 2 billion records, or approximately 2 TB of data. We sized the shards to ensure that this was not an "in-memory" test (i.e. the data portion of the B-Trees did not fit into memory). All updates were durable and used the "simple majority" replica ack policy, effectively 'committing to the network'. All read operations used the Consistency.NONE_REQUIRED parameter allowing reads to be performed on any replica. In the past we have achieved 100K ops/sec using SSD cards on a single shard cluster (replication factor 3) so for this test we used 10 shards on 15 Storage Nodes with each SN carrying 2 Rep Nodes and each RN assigned to its own SSD card. After correcting a scaling problem in YCSB, we blew past the 1M ops/sec mark with 8 shards and proceeded to hit 1.2M ops/sec with 10 shards.  Hardware Configuration We used 15 servers, each configured with two 335 GB SSD cards. We did not have homogeneous CPUs across all 15 servers available to us so 12 of the 15 were Xeon E5-2690, 2.9 GHz, 2 sockets, 32 threads, 193 GB RAM, and the other 3 were Xeon E5-2680, 2.7 GHz, 2 sockets, 32 threads, 193 GB RAM.  There might have been some upside in having all 15 machines configured with the faster CPU, but since CPU was not the limiting factor we don't believe the improvement would be significant. The client machines were Xeon X5670, 2.93 GHz, 2 sockets, 24 threads, 96 GB RAM. Although the clients had 96 GB of RAM, neither the NoSQL Database or YCSB clients require anywhere near that amount of memory and the test could have just easily been run with much less. Networking was all 10GigE. YCSB Scaling Problem We made three modifications to the YCSB benchmark. The first was to allow the test to accommodate more than 2 billion records (effectively int's vs long's). To keep the key size constant, we changed the code to use base 32 for the user ids. The second change involved to the way we run the YCSB client in order to make the test itself horizontally scalable.The basic problem has to do with the way the YCSB test creates its Zipfian distribution of keys which is intended to model "real" loads by generating clusters of key collisions. Unfortunately, the percentage of collisions on the most contentious keys remains the same even as the number of keys in the database increases. As we scale up the load, the number of collisions on those keys increases as well, eventually exceeding the capacity of the single server used for a given key.This is not a workload that is realistic or amenable to horizontal scaling. YCSB does provide alternate key distribution algorithms so this is not a shortcoming of YCSB in general. We decided that a better model would be for the key collisions to be limited to a given YCSB client process. That way, as additional YCSB client processes (i.e. additional load) are added, they each maintain the same number of collisions they encounter themselves, but do not increase the number of collisions on a single key in the entire store. We added client processes proportionally to the number of records in the database (and therefore the number of shards). This change to the use of YCSB better models a use case where new groups of users are likely to access either just their own entries, or entries within their own subgroups, rather than all users showing the same interest in a single global collection of keys. If an application finds every user having the same likelihood of wanting to modify a single global key, that application has no real hope of getting horizontal scaling. Finally, we used read/modify/write (also known as "Compare And Set") style updates during the mixed phase. This uses versioned operations to make sure that no updates are lost. This mode of operation provides better application behavior than the way we have typically run YCSB in the past, and is only practical at scale because we eliminated the shared key collision hotspots.It is also a more realistic testing scenario. To reiterate, all updates used a simple majority replica ack policy making them durable. Scalability Results In the table below, the "KVS Size" column is the number of records with the number of shards and the replication factor. Hence, the first row indicates 400m total records in the NoSQL Database (KV Store), 2 shards, and a replication factor of 3. The "Clients" column indicates the number of YCSB client processes. "Threads" is the number of threads per process with the total number of threads. Hence, 90 threads per YCSB process for a total of 360 threads. The client processes were distributed across 10 client machines. • Using elapsed time for SlowMo in XNA

  I'm trying to create a slow-mo effect in my pong game so that when a player is a button the paddles and ball will suddenly move at a far slower speed. I believe my understanding of the concepts of adjusting the timing in XNA are done, but I'm not sure of how to incorporate it into my design exactly.   my laptop has nvidia GT540m yesterday i install nvidia-current after updating fromsudo apt-add-repository ppa:ubuntu-x-swat/x-updates then i write sudo nvidia-xconfig and then reboot my desktop visual effect changes and it look good like nvidia is working but still glx i not working and nvidia-setting tells me that You do not appear to be using the NVIDIA X driver my dkms status is nvidia-current, 304.43, 3.2.0-30-generic-pae, i686: installed lspci |grep VGA output : 00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation 2nd Generation Core Processor Family Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 09) 01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: NVIDIA Corporation GF108 [GeForce GT 540M] (rev a1) also i can not login to my admin account but when i login to standard user or guest it works but still NVIDIA X driver is not working can any one suggest something so that NVIDIA X Driver start working as i seen many forum but none worked for me earlier i tried nvidia-173 ,nvidia-current(before x-swat/updates reprository) but none works for me

• Sound card stop responding

  A few days ago I installed the latest version of Ubuntu in a computer of mine, that it has installed the "Sound Blaster Audigy 2ZS". After the installation and up to yesterday everything was excelent. Yesterday I installed the latest Ubuntu updates and today I had several issues. First the mouse was not responed as should be, but after restarted my computer everything was fine with mouse. Next was my sound card. For now I do not have sound at all :( I don't really know what's wrong. Does anybody has any idea on how to solve that issue, or from where to start, to find a solution ? If there is no any available solution for that issue, can I remove the latest updates that installed yesterday ? Kind regards Merianos Nikos

This exception support will be comprised of three components: (1) new fixes for Severity 1 production issues, (2) United States Form 1099 2013 year-end updates, and (3) payroll regulatory updates for the United States, Canada, United Kingdom, and Australia for fiscal years ending in 2014.  In addition, the Extended Support period for E-Business Suite Release 12.1 has been extended through December, 2018. • Ubuntu Installer offers to show differences, then doesn-t

  When I was installing updates under 12.04 LTS today, the ubuntu installer warned that there were differences between the local copy of smb.conf and that in the installer package. It offered me a drop/down list of options. I chose one which reads something like "show differences side by side" and clicked the only available button (other than help, I think it was labelled continue) The installer then proceeded with updates and asked for a reboot. Even after rebooting, no comparison was shown. How can I find out now whether I still have my previous smb.conf or the one from the installer, and what the differences are?

  Customers can now choose when their applications receive new operating system updates and patches by selecting which version of the operating system their applications will run on in Windows Azure.  Right now there is only one available operating system version (released on December 17th, 2009), but new builds with the latest updates and patches will be released regularly.  This new feature allows developers to test their applications when new patches come out before upgrading their production deployments. Some days later I wanted to check for updates because the update-manager shows me the following: "The packet information has been updated last 24 days ago." and a window appeared. That window after downloading packages, said that: Failed to download the information from the repository Check your Internet connection Details: W:Failed to fetch gzip:/var/lib/apt/lists/partial/ar.archive.ubuntu.com_ubuntu_dists_oneiric_unive??rse_i18n_Translation-en Encountered a section with no Package: header , E:Some index files failed to download. They have been ignored, or old ones used instead. But my Internet connection works fine. I downloaded and installed and run the banish404 software and it does not work. Also I tried with an terminal with 'sudo apt-get update'. What do I have to do?

• Ubuntu 10.10 crashing on initialization, how to solve?

  Yesterday I installed Ubuntu 10.10, and on the first login it got frozen, so I powered off and on the computer, and it started well. Now, during the updates it got frozen again, and after every login again. I can't even change to the command line with ctrl+f1 or f2. Is there a way to get some log information on the initialization? I have no idea what can be causing this. Previously I was using Ubuntu 9.04, which is now not receiving new updates. Versions 10.04 and 9.10 behavior the same as 10.10, and version 11.04 crashes much on many situations. So, is there a way to get some log information on the initialization to help find what's wrong?

• Adding PPA on install

  I have a app I am packaging for ubuntu. I don't like the idea that if included in the ubuntu repositories I will have no control over updating that application. I don't want my users stuck on an out dated version for up to 6 months. I also do not want my users to have to manually add a PPA themselves to get updates as the target user will not have the technical know how to do this. Is it OK to have my .deb add a PPA on install. So that I can roll out stable updates to my ubuntu users.

There have not been any updates since the first of May this year. Do you know of any PPA thats actively maintained?
