    Hi, I have browsed lift's MegaProtoUser and encountered this construction: ??("Last Name"). Can anyone explain, what that means?     Does anyone have any good stories of these kinds of organizations being open to using open source (such as tools like Maven etc). Many staff I've encountered have little or no exposure to open source/systems and open source is treated with great suspicion. Some reasons given for this are lack of support and robustness, which is ironic given the number of end-of-life unsupported vendor products that are in production. Bonus points for any success stories where you've seen open source go into orgs like this and have a real benefit!

  • Jersey Test Framework with no Maven environment

    We do not use a Maven framework in our environments. Can you suggest a way to use the Jersey test framework for testing the Rest web services? I have tried to override the TestContaioner and TestContainerFactory interfaces to set up an AppDescriptor but I fail to understand how to set the LowLevelDescriptor to use the HTTPContainerFactory instead of the default one. I tried also settign the System property jersey.test.containerFactory. Does not work?Any ideas?

  • Designing web-based plugin systems correctly so they don't waste as many resources?

    Many CMS systems which rely on third parties for much of their code often build "plugin" or "hooks" systems to make it easy for developers to modify the codebase's actions without editing the core files. This usually means an Observer or Event design pattern. However, when you look at systems like wordpress you see that on every page they load some kind of bootstrap file from each of the plugin's folders to see if that plugin will need to run that request. Its this poor design that causes systems like wordpress to spend many extra MB's of memory loading and parsing unneeded items each page. Are there alternative ways to do this? I'm looking for ideas in building my own. For example, Is there a way to load all this once and then cache the results so that your system knows how to lazy-load plugins? In other words, the system loads a configuration file that specifies all the events that plugin wishes to tie into and then saves it for future requests? If that also performs poorly, then perhaps there is a special file-structure that could be used to make educated guesses about when certain plugins are unneeded to fullfil the request. Any ideas?   • Standalone XULRunner app not loading the Flash player plugin

    Hi, I have created a standalone XUL application, and I copied "NPSWF32.dll"(flash plugin dll) to the "plugins" folder under the browser. When I launch the application, flash content is not getting displayed. If I set the MOZ_PLUGIN_PATH to the "plugins" directory before launching the application, everything is working as expected. Could someone tell me, what I needs to do in order to load the flash plugin automatically from the "plugins" folder. Thanks, Rajeesh
