  • How do you manage all of the information you have learned and found? [closed]

    - by B Seven
    Possible Duplicate: How do you manage your knowledge base? What do you use for personal note taking to keep track of everything you learn? Are you always Googling or searching StackOverflow to answer the same questions? Or searching for and copying and pasting existing code? I feel like I have a poor memory, especially remembering things like syntax. Are there any knowledge management systems that would work well for a programming language or operating system? It would be great if there were a way to save everything I learn in an easy to search system. Does such a thing exist? Maybe you would be able to search by question (How to sort an array?, How to set static IP?), or by tag (sort, array, enumeration, iterator, IP). I know it would be easy to develop my own system, but I thought it would be great to learn what works for other people.

  • Data structure for grid with negative indeces

    - by The Secret Imbecile
    Sorry if this is an insultingly obvious concept, but it's something I haven't done before and I've been unable to find any material discussing the best way to approach it. I'm wondering what's the best data structure for holding a 2D grid of unknown size. The grid has integer coordinates (x,y), and will have negative indices in both directions. So, what is the best way to hold this grid? I'm programming in c# currently, so I can't have negative array indices. My initial thought was to have class with 4 separate arrays for (+x,+y),(+x,-y),(-x,+y), and (-x,-y). This seems to be a valid way to implement the grid, but it does seem like I'm over-engineering the solution, and array resizing will be a headache. Another idea was to keep track of the center-point of the array and set that as the topological (0,0), however I would have the issue of having to do a shift to every element of the grid when repeatedly adding to the top-left of the grid, which would be similar to grid resizing though in all likelihood more frequent. Thoughts?

  • Version Not Final, Does not represent actual game footage?

    - by thinly veiled question mark
    Just curious about this. Frequently, a lot of gameplay videos from big studios have small subtitled text at the lower part of the screen, reading something like: Pre-Alpha Gameplay -- Footage not Final Game Footage not Final Pre-Alpha, Game here is not final Is there some sort of reason they do this? Is there some sort of legal ramification that they need to go through by adding this? I have especially seen some gameplay vids whose titles are "Alpha x.x.x", yet still, in the video itself, it always something like "footage not final, game may change".

  • GUI Freezes and Output to JTextField from user input

    - by user2929005
    I am having I hope only two issues currently. I have had help on this on a previous question that I have asked but now I am running into different issues. My current issues now is that I need to print out into a JTextField a sorted array. I do not have questions about how to sort the array I just would like help on how to get the array to print to the JTextField when the Bubble Sort button is pressed. Currently when I press the button it freezes. It freezes at this line. list.add(Integer.valueOf(input.nextInt())); please help Thank you. import java.awt.EventQueue; import javax.swing.*; import java.awt.event.*; import java.util.*; public class Sorting { private JFrame frame; private JTextArea inputArea; private JTextField outputArea; ArrayList<Integer> list = new ArrayList<Integer>(); Scanner input = new Scanner(System.in); /** * Launch the application. */ public static void main(String[] args) { EventQueue.invokeLater(new Runnable() { public void run() { try { Sorting window = new Sorting(); window.frame.setVisible(true); } catch (Exception e) { e.printStackTrace(); } } }); } /** * Create the application. */ public Sorting() { initialize(); } /** * Initialize the contents of the frame. */ private void initialize() { frame = new JFrame(); frame.setBounds(100, 100, 450, 300); frame.setDefaultCloseOperation(JFrame.EXIT_ON_CLOSE); frame.setTitle("Sorting"); frame.getContentPane().setLayout(null); JButton bubbleButton = new JButton("Bubble Sort"); bubbleButton.addActionListener(new ActionListener() { public void actionPerformed(ActionEvent arg0) { list.add(Integer.valueOf(input.nextInt())); // for(int i = 0; i < list.size(); i++){ // // } } }); bubbleButton.setBounds(10, 211, 114, 23); frame.getContentPane().add(bubbleButton); JButton mergeButton = new JButton("Merge Sort"); mergeButton.addActionListener(new ActionListener() { public void actionPerformed(ActionEvent e) { } }); mergeButton.setBounds(305, 211, 114, 23); frame.getContentPane().add(mergeButton); JButton quickButton = new JButton("Quick Sort"); quickButton.addActionListener(new ActionListener() { public void actionPerformed(ActionEvent e) { } }); quickButton.setBounds(163, 211, 114, 23); frame.getContentPane().add(quickButton); inputArea = new JTextArea(); inputArea.setBounds(10, 36, 414, 51); frame.getContentPane().add(inputArea); outputArea = new JTextField(); outputArea.setEditable(false); outputArea.setBounds(10, 98, 414, 59); frame.getContentPane().add(outputArea); outputArea.setColumns(10); JLabel label = new JLabel("Please Enter 5 Numbers"); label.setHorizontalAlignment(SwingConstants.CENTER); label.setBounds(10, 11, 414, 14); frame.getContentPane().add(label); } }

  • Having some trouble in my pagation code(PHP)

    - by user300371
    My table is posting and in that table, it shows all the posting people put in. I am trying to make page navigation links at the bottom of the posts. the function generateenter code here_page_links does all the work. The code seem to be only showing the "<-" and "-" and not the link numbers. I think the function is only reading the $_GET['posting'] ==1. (this code is from the Oreilly PHP/MySQL book. I am using it as practice) function generate_page_links($cur_page, $num_pages) { $page_links = ''; // If this page is not the first page, generate the "previous" link if ($cur_page > 1) { //cur_page is just a number that is gotten from the url. $page_links .= '<a href="' . $_SERVER['PHP_SELF'] . '?page=' . ($cur_page - 1) . '"><--</a> '; } else { $page_links .= '<- '; } // Loop through the pages generating the page number links for ($i = 1; $i <= $num_pages; $i++) { if ($cur_page == $i) { $page_links .= ' ' . $i; } else { $page_links .= ' <a href="' . $_SERVER['PHP_SELF'] . '?usersearch=' . $user_search . '&sort=' . $sort . '&page=' . $i . '"> ' . $i . '</a>'; } } // If this page is not the last page, generate the "next" link if ($cur_page < $num_pages) { $page_links .= ' <a href="' . $_SERVER['PHP_SELF'] . '?usersearch=' . $user_search . '&sort=' . $sort . '&page=' . ($cur_page + 1) . '">-></a>'; } if ($cur_page == $num_pages){ //the last page $page_links .= ' ->'; } return $page_links; //need to return this variable in the function } // Calculate pagination information $cur_page = isset($_GET['page']) ? $_GET['page'] : 1; $results_per_page = 3; // number of results per page $skip = (($cur_page - 1) * $results_per_page); $query = "SELECT * FROM posting ORDER BY date_added DESC"; $data = mysqli_query($dbc, $query); $total = mysqli_num_rows($data); $num_pages = ceil($total / $results_per_page); //Query again to get just the subset of results $query = $query . " LIMIT $skip, $results_per_page"; $result = mysqli_query($dbc, $query); echo '<table>'; echo '<tr><td><b>Title</b></td><td><b>Date Posted</b></td></tr>'; while ($row = mysqli_fetch_array($result)) { echo '<tr><td><a href="ad.php? posting_id='.$row['posting_id'].'   • Winamp question: Generating 'dynamic playlists' from file playlists -OR- mass-tagging by file playli

    - by Daddy Warbox
    I'm trying to think of a way to do this. I sort my songs into a variety of playlists corresponding to different 'moods' I might have as I listen to them, and some songs fit for more than one kind of mood (e.g. a jazz song might be 'stylish' and 'emotional', or something to that effect). I also give them star ratings for a general sort of opinion about them. I want to be able to filter and sort my media library by the moods I want or don't want, as well as by star rating. Anyone have a good way to do something like this? I can't seem to use Winamp's dynamic playlists to generate lists from existing filesystem playlists (e.g. songs in a given .m3u files). Hand-tagging files with Winamp's tag editor is a royal pain. It's trouble enough just giving a star rating and sorting into playlists as is. If there is there a way to mass tag songs within each playlist with mood words to allow me to create dynamic playlists, I'd be fine (for now). It'd be nice if I could do this via some kind of hotkey for each song, too. I'm looking to see if I can use a macro program or something to do that, though. Thanks in advance. P.S: Alternatively, would something like Foobar have functions like this? Note: Italics are recent edits.

  • Lucene multiple indexes : Normalize document scores??

    - by Roey
    Hi All. Suppose I've got multiple lucene indexes (not replicas) on several PC's. I query each index and then merge the results. Is there any way to normalize the document scores so that I could sort by score (relevance)? I mean, the scores for document A from index A would not be comparable with document B from index B, unless I do some sort of normalization.... not so? Thanks Roey

  • Sorting an observable collection with linq

    - by zachary
    I have an observable collection and I sort it using linq. Everything is great, but the problem I have is how do I sort the actual observable collection? Instead I just end up with some IEnumerable thing and I end up clearing the collection and adding the stuff back in. This can't be good for performance. Does anyone know of a better way to do this?

  • Standard way to persist data between requests in ASP.NET-MVC

    - by Nate Bross
    What is the most standard or best way to persist data between requests? Should I use cookies or session variables? I'm interested in keeping data like sort order, sort column, and page number (for paginiation). I'm coming from a webforms background so normally this type of thing was automatically handled for me in the viewstate of the controls I was using.

  • ASP.NET Creating a Rich Repeater, DataBind wiping out custom added controls...

    - by tonyellard
    So...I had this clever idea that I'd create my own Repeater control that implements paging and sorting by inheriting from Repeater and extending it's capabilities. I found some information and bits and pieces on how to go about this and everything seemed ok... I created a WebControlLibrary to house my custom controls. Along with the enriched repeater, I created a composite control that would act as the "pager bar", having forward, back and page selection. My pager bar works 100% on it's own, properly firing a paged changed event when the user interacts with it. The rich repeater databinds without issue, but when the databind fires (when I call base.databind()), the control collection is cleared out and my pager bars are removed. This screws up the viewstate for the pager bars making them unable to fire their events properly or maintain their state. I've tried adding the controls back to the collection after base.databind() fires, but that doesn't solve the issue. I start to get very strange results including problems with altering the hierarchy of the control tree (resolved by adding [ViewStateModeById]). Before I go back to the drawing board and create a second composite control which contains a repeater and the pager bars (so that the repeater isn't responsible for the pager bars viewstate) are there any thoughts about how to resolve the issue? In the interest of share and share alike, the code for the repeater itself is below, the pagerbars aren't as significant as the issue is really the maintaining of state for any additional child controls. (forgive the roughness of some of the code...it's still a work in progress) using System; using System.Collections.Generic; using System.ComponentModel; using System.Text; using System.Data; using System.Web; using System.Web.UI; using System.Web.UI.WebControls; [ViewStateModeById] public class SortablePagedRepeater : Repeater, INamingContainer { private SuperRepeaterPagerBar topBar = new SuperRepeaterPagerBar(); private SuperRepeaterPagerBar btmBar = new SuperRepeaterPagerBar(); protected override void OnInit(EventArgs e) { Page.RegisterRequiresControlState(this); InitializeControls(); base.OnInit(e); EnsureChildControls(); } protected void InitializeControls() { topBar.ID = this.ID + "__topPagerBar"; topBar.NumberOfPages = this._currentProperties.numOfPages; topBar.CurrentPage = this.CurrentPageNumber; topBar.PageChanged += new SuperRepeaterPagerBar.PageChangedEventHandler(PageChanged); btmBar.ID = this.ID + "__btmPagerBar"; btmBar.NumberOfPages = this._currentProperties.numOfPages; btmBar.CurrentPage = this.CurrentPageNumber; btmBar.PageChanged += new SuperRepeaterPagerBar.PageChangedEventHandler(PageChanged); } protected override void CreateChildControls() { EnsureDataBound(); this.Controls.Add(topBar); this.Controls.Add(btmBar); //base.CreateChildControls(); } private void PageChanged(object sender, int newPage) { this.CurrentPageNumber = newPage; } public override void DataBind() { //pageDataSource(); //DataBind removes all controls from control collection... base.DataBind(); Controls.Add(topBar); Controls.Add(btmBar); } private void pageDataSource() { //Create paged data source PagedDataSource pds = new PagedDataSource(); pds.PageSize = this.ItemsPerPage; pds.AllowPaging = true; // first get a PagedDataSource going and perform sort if possible... if (base.DataSource is System.Collections.IEnumerable) { pds.DataSource = (System.Collections.IEnumerable)base.DataSource; } else if (base.DataSource is System.Data.DataView) { DataView data = (DataView)DataSource; if (this.SortBy != null && data.Table.Columns.Contains(this.SortBy)) { data.Sort = this.SortBy; } pds.DataSource = data.Table.Rows; } else if (base.DataSource is System.Data.DataTable) { DataTable data = (DataTable)DataSource; if (this.SortBy != null && data.Columns.Contains(this.SortBy)) { data.DefaultView.Sort = this.SortBy; } pds.DataSource = data.DefaultView; } else if (base.DataSource is System.Data.DataSet) { DataSet data = (DataSet)DataSource; if (base.DataMember != null && data.Tables.Contains(base.DataMember)) { if (this.SortBy != null && data.Tables[base.DataMember].Columns.Contains(this.SortBy)) { data.Tables[base.DataMember].DefaultView.Sort = this.SortBy; } pds.DataSource = data.Tables[base.DataMember].DefaultView; } else if (data.Tables.Count > 0) { if (this.SortBy != null && data.Tables[0].Columns.Contains(this.SortBy)) { data.Tables[0].DefaultView.Sort = this.SortBy; } pds.DataSource = data.Tables[0].DefaultView; } else { throw new Exception("DataSet doesn't have any tables."); } } else if (base.DataSource == null) { // don't do anything? } else { throw new Exception("DataSource must be of type System.Collections.IEnumerable. • Guides for PostgreSQL query tuning?

    - by Joe
    I've found a number of resources that talk about tuning the database server, but I haven't found much on the tuning of the individual queries. For instance, in Oracle, I might try adding hints to ignore indexes or to use sort-merge vs. correlated joins, but I can't find much on tuning Postgres other than using explicit joins and recommendations when bulk loading tables. Do any such guides exist so I can focus on tuning the most run and/or underperforming queries, hopefully without adversely affecting the currently well-performing queries? I'd even be happy to find something that compared how certain types of queries performed relative to other databases, so I had a better clue of what sort of things to avoid. update: I should've mentioned, I took all of the Oracle DBA classes along with their data modeling and SQL tuning classes back in the 8i days ... so I know about 'EXPLAIN', but that's more to tell you what's going wrong with the query, not necessarily how to make it better. (eg, are 'while var=1 or var=2' and 'while var in (1,2)' considered the same when generating an execution plan? What if I'm doing it with 10 permutations? When are multi-column indexes used? Are there ways to get the planner to optimize for fastest start vs. fastest finish? What sort of 'gotchas' might I run into when moving from mySQL, Oracle or some other RDBMS?) I could write any complex query dozens if not hundreds of ways, and I'm hoping to not have to try them all and find which one works best through trial and error. I've already found that 'SELECT count(*)' won't use an index, but 'SELECT count(primary_key)' will ... maybe a 'PostgreSQL for experienced SQL users' sort of document that explained sorts of queries to avoid, and how best to re-write them, or how to get the planner to handle them better. update 2: I found a Comparison of different SQL Implementations which covers PostgreSQL, DB2, MS-SQL, mySQL, Oracle and Informix, and explains if, how, and gotchas on things you might try to do, and his references section linked to Oracle / SQL Server / DB2 / Mckoi /MySQL Database Equivalents (which is what its title suggests) and to the wikibook SQL Dialects Reference which covers whatever people contribute (includes some DB2, SQLite, mySQL, PostgreSQL, Firebird, Vituoso, Oracle, MS-SQL, Ingres, and Linter).

  • Accessing .NET functionality from a macro in a VSTO Excel workbook

    - by Daniel DiPaolo
    A while back, I built an Excel workbook for someone else using VSTO SE, and there's functionality in the accompanying DLL that they'd like to be able to use in a VB macro in the workbook. Short of rebuilding the workbook with a control that does what they want, is there a way they can just hook into the necessary function somehow via some sort of macro call? Does the macro have any sort of visibility into the functionality within the VSTO-built DLL that is associated with the workbook?

  • question about sorting

    - by skydoor
    Bubble sort is O(n) at best, O(n^2) at worst, and its memory usage is O(1) . Merge sort is always O(n log n), but its memory usage is O(n). Which algorithm we would use to implement a function that takes an array of integers and returns the max integer in the collection, assuming that the length of the array is less than 1000. What if the array length is greater than 1000?

If I do, are there any examples out there that I could use as a reference? Thanks very much!

  • Using a type parameter and a pointer to the same type parameter in a function template

    - by Darel
    Hello, I've written a template function to determine the median of any vector or array of any type that can be sorted with sort. The function and a small test program are below: #include <algorithm> #include <vector> #include <iostream> using namespace::std; template <class T, class X> void median(T vec, size_t size, X& ret) { sort(vec, vec + size); size_t mid = size/2; ret = size % 2 == 0 ? (vec[mid] + vec[mid-1]) / 2 : vec[mid]; } int main() { vector<double> v; v.push_back(2); v.push_back(8); v.push_back(7); v.push_back(4); v.push_back(9); double a[5] = {2, 8, 7, 4, 9}; double r; median(v.begin(), v.size(), r); cout << r << endl; median(a, 5, r); cout << r << endl; return 0; } As you can see, the median function takes a pointer as an argument, T vec. Also in the argument list is a reference variable X ret, which is modified by the function to store the computed median value. However I don't find this a very elegant solution. T vec will always be a pointer to the same type as X ret. My initial attempts to write median had a header like this: template<class T> T median(T *vec, size_t size) { sort(vec, vec + size); size_t mid = size/2; return size % 2 == 0 ? (vec[mid] + vec[mid-1]) / 2 : vec[mid]; } I also tried: template<class T, class X> X median(T vec, size_t size) { sort(vec, vec + size); size_t mid = size/2; return size % 2 == 0 ? (vec[mid] + vec[mid-1]) / 2 : vec[mid]; } I couldn't get either of these to work. My question is, can anyone show me a working implementation of either of my alternatives? Thanks for looking!
