• windows service application run fine on windows XP but crashes on windows7

• Asus MyCinema U3100mini Choppy

  I'm running an Asus MyCinema U3100mini ATSC on Windows 7 64-bit. When I play live TV in Windows Media Center, it's very choppy and uses 500+ MB of RAM, I'm guessing due to the hard drive buffering functionality. Is there any way to disable the live TV pause buffer completely? If not, can anyone recommend alternative software that: Works with the MyCinema. Is lightweight and not horribly bloated with features I'll never use like Windows Media Center is. Edits: This is a dual boot system. I've discovered that the tuner actually works fine on XP. It also works fine on my other computer, which has slower hardware and also runs Windows 7 64-bit. The problem actually seems to be with playback at large screen sizes, not with hard drive buffering. Everything works fine below a certain window size and fails for large windows or full screens. Also, the same thing seems to happen whether playing live or recorded TV. As far as the obvious stuff goes, I have the latest video drivers from ATI for my Radeon x1050.

  Note: I'm posting this here on Superuser as I think the issue is more related to the Windows Installer than the game itself. My friend is having trouble installing Company of Heroes and CoH: Opposing fronts under Windows 7. A couple of percent into the installation, when the C/C++ runtime is being installed, the install fails with the following message: An error occured while installing the Windows Installer package "C:\Users\...\AppData\Local\Temp\...\...\vcredist.msi". Error code 10212:00000659: MsiInstallProductW returned 00000659: This installation is forbidden by system policy. Contact your system administrator. We have tried: Making sure that any previous installations have been completely removed, including searching and deleting any files/folders/registry entries matching "THQ" (the publisher) and "Relic" (the developer). Installing into a brand new user account Running Setup.exe as administrator Running Compatibility check for Setup.exe, which suggested Windows XP but failed when trying those settings out Does anyone know what might be the cause of the system policy error?

• Weird File Corruption

  My Windows 8 broke few days ago and I had to reinstall it (see Can't boot Windows 8). Afterwards, I found some corrupt files on C drive. Ok, it happens, but this is really weird. Corrupt files seem to contain stuff from Windows registry. For example, this is beginning of one of the corrupt files: hbin ` PÿÿÿT h i s z o n e c o n t a i n s w e b s i t e s t h a t y o u t r u s t n o t t o d a m a g e y o u r c o m p u t e r o r y o u r f i l e s ... I googled and found that 'hbin' often refers to "hive bin" of Windows registry. Then I searched the registry for the readable part of corrupt data, and found the text in some registry value (not the text above, but something I found in another corrupt file. I'm assuming the above is also from registry). My question is, how could this happen? Was it a virus, or did Windows somehow corrupt these files while attempting to repair itself?

I am wondering whether Windows uses the concept of "Socket Buffer Size"? On Windows XP, the TCP window size is fixed. We can set it using the TCPWindowSize registry value. How about Socket Buffer Size? How can we set Socket Buffer size on Windows? Can we set it to a value different from TCP window size?

• Using my System as the server- need advice

  We are deploying my web application in my system in jboss. And I am planning to use my system as the server as well. There are no html pages or jsp pages deployed. The client requests for resources and the server provides the resources in the form of objects. We are also using databases(Postgresql-15 tables) as the database server(this will also reside in my machine). My system configuration is Windows Vista, 2.3 GHZ, 4GB Ram, 32 bit. There can be many requests coming in at the same time. So is this configuration enough? Should we go with a different Operating System like Windows Server? I have never used Windows Server OS. How will it be different from other windows operating systems? Or if you feel please some other OS will be good in this situation, please suggest.

• Dual Boot Win8 and Win7 - Win 7 fails while booting

  Below are my dual boot settings. Both are on different partitions, default is Windows 8. Both were working fine. There are multiple users of this machine, few run 8 while few 7. All 7's users are novice and they use Internet only. I frequently update Windows 8 but not 7. Few weeks ago, Win 7 stopped booting. Machine gets restarted while booting with 7(Windows 7 start up glowing-Win-logo-screen does not appear) and the 8's loader reappears. Win 7's partition still exists and contains Windows folder What steps should i take to check the problem?

  Can the utility "Installation Monitor" from the Windows 2000 Resource Kit Tools for administrative tasks be used on newer OS's, specifically, Windows Server 2008 R2. The main thing I am concerned about is it may error will not track things correctly without letting me know that that it errored due to how Windows has changed between 2000 and today. • How to make mouse in Windows 7 act the same as Windows XP

  In Windows XP using TweakUI I could enable an option so that when my mouse goes over an inactive window, it makes that window the active window. There is also another separate option so that if the window becomes active, it automatically becomes the topmost window. I like to enable the former but not the latter. For Windows 7 I have not been able to find the same thing. What I found instead is an option inside windows that does something similar. If I move my mouse over an inactive window, I have to hover over it for a while before it becomes active. It is not instantaneous. The second problem is that once it does become active, it automatically makes itself the topmost window, covering other things I don't want covered. In summary, this is what I want in Windows 7: When my mouse goes over an inactive window, it immediately makes it the active window. When it activates the window, it does not raise it above other windows.

• Server 2008 Task Scheduler Mapped Drive Access C#

  I'm trying do get Server 2008's Task Scheduler to run a C# console app which backs up data to a mapped backup drive somewhere on FastHosts network. I've written a test app which simply does this Directory.CreateDirectory("Z:\" + DateTime.Now.Ticks.ToString()); i.e. just creates a directory on the root of this Z drive. This works fine when I just run the .exe but when I schedule it in Task Scheduler it says the task has completed with return code 3762507597 - I can't find any info on what this means. I'm running the task with the highest Admin privelages as far as I can see.

• Rails - Help with rake task

  I have a rake task I need to run in order to sanitize (remove forward slashes) some data in the database. Here's the task: namespace :db do desc "Remove slashes from old-style URLs" task :substitute_slashes => :environment do puts "Starting" contents = Content.all contents.each do |c| if c.permalink != nil c.permalink.gsub!("/","") c.save! end end puts "Finished" end end Which allows me to run rake db:substitute_slashes --trace If I do puts c.permalink after the gsub! I can see it's setting the attribute properly. However the save! doesn't seem to be working because the data is not changed. Can someone spot what the issue may be? Another thing, I have paperclip installed and this task is triggering [paperclip] Saving attachments. which I would rather avoid.

• Parallel Task Library WaitAny Design

  I've just begun to explore the PTL and have a design question. My Scenario: I have a list of URLs that each refer to an image. I want each image to be downloaded in parallel. As soon as at least one image is downloaded, I want to execute a method that does something with the downloaded image. That method should NOT be parallelized -- it should be serial. I think the following will work but I'm not sure if this is the right way to do it. Because I have separate classes for collecting the images and for doing "something" with the collected images, I end up passing around an array of Tasks which seems wrong since it exposes the inner workings of how images are retrieved. But I don't know a way around it. In reality there is more to both of these methods but that's not important for this. Just know that they really shouldn't be lumped into one large method that both retrieves and does something with the image.   Hello. I am a long time lurker here and have found over time many answers regarding jquery and web development topics so I decided to ask a question of my own. This time I have to create a c++ project for collage which should help manage the workflow of a company providing all kinds of services through in the field teams. The ideas I have so far are: client-server application; the server is a dispatcher where all the orders from clients get and the clients are mobile devices (PDAs) each team in the field having one a order from a client is a task. Each task is made up of a series of subtasks. You have a database with estimations on how long a task should take to complete you also know what tasks or subtasks each team on the field can perform based on what kind of specialists made up the team (not going to complicate the problem by adding needed materials, it is considered that if a member of a team can perform a subtask he has the stuff needed) Now knowing these factors, what would a good task assignment algorithm be? The criteria is: how many tasks can a team do, how many tasks they have in the queue, it could also be location, how far away are they from the place but I don't think I can implement that.. It needs to be efficient and also to adapt quickly is the human dispatcher manually assigns a task. Any help or leads would be really appreciated. Also I'm not 100% sure in the idea so if you have another way you would go about creating such an application please share, even if it just a quick outline. I have to write a theoretical part too so even if the ideas are far more complex that what i outlined that would be ok ; I'd write those and implement what I can.

• Windows 7 is shutting down unexpectedly, according to the logs.

  Here's a message from my eventvwr EventLog (Windows Logs System): The previous system shutdown at 11:51:15 AM on ?7/?29/?2009 was unexpected. This is funny because I was wondering why the system shut down while I was playing Civilizations IV full screen. Now I know. It was unexpected. Has anyone encountered and resolved this? A little background: I am running Windows 7 RC inside VMWare Fusion 2 (just updated a few months back) on a MacBook (Bitterly not Pro) aluminum-body. Windows 7 occasionally will shut down. This isn't a quick turn-off, it's a shutdown where all the programs are exited, the system waits until they quit (and Civ4 doesn't prompt me to save), it even installed Windows Updates before restarting. And yes it is restarting right after the shutdown. Because I run a game in full screen mode I do not notice any dialog with a countdown timer or anything like that that might be a warning. As I have iStat on my dashboard widgets I can see about 8 temperature monitors. I have seen the CPU get up to 74C before, but during the shutdown, though it seemed hot to the touch (always is), it read 61C for the CPU, 60C for heatsink A, 50C for heatsink B and in the 30s-40s for the enclosure and harddrives. As I type this now, the temps are actually higher, so I don't think the temperature caused it. I have at least six such events dating first from 5/17 which was a week after installing Windows 7. I did find one information level warning from USER32 in the system log that says: The process C:\Windows\system32\svchost.exe (DLAMBLIN-WIN7) has initiated the restart of computer DLAMBLIN-WIN7 on behalf of user NT AUTHORITY\SYSTEM for the following reason: Operating System: Recovery (Planned) Reason Code: 0x80020002 Shutdown Type: restart Comment: And another 15 minutes before that from Windows Update: Restart Required: To complete the installation of the following updates, the computer will be restarted within 15 minutes: - Cumulative Security Update for Internet Explorer 8 for Windows 7 Release Candidate for x64-based Systems (KB972260) Which I think kind of explains it. Though I don't know why restarting after an update would create an error event of "shutdown was unexpected", isn't that pretty odd? Now, how do I set it to never restart after an update unless I click something. Application of solution: As fretje reminded me, there's a couple of configurable settings for this, in windows 7 they're much in the same place as in Windows 2000 SP3 and XP SP1. Running gpedit.msc pops up a window that looks like: Windows 7 has changed the order and added a couple of newer options I've italicized: Do not display 'Install Updates and Shut Down' in Shut Down Windows dialog box Do not adjust default option to 'Install Updates and Shut Down' in Shut Down Windows dialog box Enabling Windows Power Management to automatically wake up the system to install scheduled updates Configure Automatic Updates Specify intranet Microsoft update service location Automatic Updates detection frequency Allow non-administrators to receive update notifications Turn on Software Notifications Allow Automatic Updates immediate installation Turn on recommended updates via Automatic Updates No auto-restart with logged-on users for scheduled Automatic Updates Re-prompt for restart with scheduled installations.   Untitled Document The Why and the How If you have heard of Oracle Configuration Manager (OCM), but haven’t installed it, I’m guessing this is for one of two reasons. Either you don’t know how it helps you or you don’t know how to install it. I’ll address both of those reasons today. First, let’s take a quick look at how My Oracle Support and the Oracle Configuration Manager work together to gain a good understanding of what their differences and roles are before we tackle the install.   Oracle Configuration Manger is the tool that actually performs the data collection task. You deploy this lightweight piece of software into your system to collect configuration information about the system and OCM uploads that data to Oracle’s customer configuration repository. Oracle Support Engineers then have the configuration data available when you file a service request. You can also view the data through My Oracle Support. The real value is that the data Oracle Configuration Manager collects can help you avoid problems and get your Service Requests solved more quickly. When you view the information in My Oracle Support’s user interface to OCM, it may help you avoid situations that create problems. The proactive tools included in Oracle Configuration Manager help you avoid issues before they occur. You also save time because you didn’t need to open a service request. For example, you can use this capability when you need to compare your system configuration at two points in time, or monitor the system health. If you make the configuration data available to Oracle Support Engineers, when you need to open a Service Request the data helps them diagnose and resolve your critical system issues more quickly, which means you get answers more quickly too. Quick Installation Process Overview Before we dive into the step-by-step details, let me provide a quick overview. For some of you, this will be all you need. Log in to My Oracle Support and download the data collector from Collector tab. If you don’t see the Collector tab, click the More tab gain access. On the Collector tab, you will find a drop-down list showing which platforms are available. You can also see more ways to the Collector can help you if you click through the carousel of benefits. After you download the software for your platform, use FTP to move that file (.zip) from your PC to the server that hosts the Oracle software. Once you have that file on the server, locate the $ORACLE_HOME directory, and unzip the file within that directory. You can then use the command line tool to start the installation process. The installation process requires the My Oracle Support credential (Support Identifier, username, and password) Proxy specification (Host IP Address, Port number, username and password) Installation Step-by-Step Download the collector zip file from My Oracle Support and place it into your $Oracle_Home Unzip the zip file you downloaded from My Oracle Support – this will create a directory named CCR with several subdirectories Using the command line go to “$ORACLE_HOME/CCR/bin” and run the following command “setupCCR” Provide your My Oracle Support credential: login, password, and Support Identifier The installer will start deploying the collector application You have installed the Collector Post Installation Now that you have installed successfully, the scheduler is ready to collect configuration information for the software available in your Oracle Home. By default, the first collection will take place the day after the installation. If you want to run an instrumentation script to start the configuration collection of your Oracle Database server, E-Business Suite, or Enterprise Manager, you will find more details on that in the Installation and Administration Guide for My Oracle Support Configuration Manager.   I have a dual monitor setup, and I recently played around with the positioning settings, and some of my single window applications do the favour of preserving where they were last closed, and opening in the same position later. Unfortuanately, that now places them out of the viewable area of my screens! Is there some way to force a particular window into the viewable area? If it matters at all, this is on Windows XP 32b.

One use of this, for example, would be to wrap multiple instances of Excel into one window, and thus icon on the taskbar. I couldn't find mention of this program via Google, because of the multiple meanings of the word "window". Does anyone remember, or know of, such a program?

Un-focused MSN Messenger conversation windows are a good example of this behavior: they turn orange as soon as a remote user sends an instance message. My code targets the Windows 7 platform, but working on older Windows OS would be nice too.

• ClearType setting ignored in Windows Virtual PC with Windows XP Pro

  I have a VM set up through Windows Virtual PC for Windows XP Pro and I have been completely unable to get ClearType to work. I have turned it on in the Display - Appearance - Effects dialog but it seems like it completely ignores this. All text is still without any anti-aliasing. Even setting it to normal smoothing doesn't work. If I disable Integration Features, it seems to work, but then I lose a lot of nice features. What's weirder, is that the Windows XP Mode installed with Windows Virtual PC (this is separate from my XP Pro VM) works with both ClearType and Integration Features just fine. I turned it on the same way and it works like a charm, no problems. I'm running Windows 7 Professional 64-bit as the host OS and have the latest (to my knowledge) Windows Virtual PC installed. The only funny business I can think of is that I've enabled 24-bit color via the Group Policy setting inside each XP virtual machine (both Pro and the stripped down XP mode copy). This is a fairly well-known trick documented all over the web, but here's a typical post about it.

• Dual boot windows 8 pro and windows 7 on XPS 8500 Special Edition

  I am trying to install a dual boot with windows 7 premium and windows 8 Pro on an XPS 8500 special edition. I created a new primary partition on my C: drive, inserted the windows 8 install disk, and rebooted my computer from DVD. I select custom install and the dialog box saying "Where do you want to install windows at?" pops up but none of my drives are listed. Please help me determine what is going on. I don't understand why none of my drives are showing up on this menu. Not even the original drive. When I go to load driver and click on the partition I created it tells me "No signed device drivers were found. Make sure the installation media contains the correct drivers, and then click OK." resolved above issue by running setup from the source folder on the install disk instead of booting from DVD. Was able to locate my new partition and start install. It completes the first step of "Copying windows files" just fine but then on the next step "Getting files ready for installation" my computer restarts and attempts to load windows 8 but keeps telling me my pc needs to restart. This keeps going on in an infinite boot loop. Please help, this has been a nightmare!

The build is run with the command: MSBuild.exe /logger:MyLogger.dll build.xml Within the build.xml is a sequence of tasks, most of which have been custom written to compile a (C++ or C#) solution, and are accessed with the following custom Task: <DoCompile Desc="Building MyProject 1" Param1="$(Param1Value)" /> <DoCompile Desc="Building MyProject 2" Param1="$(Param1Value)" /> <!-- etc --> The custom build task DoCompile is defined as: public class DoCompile : Microsoft.Build.Utilities.Task { [Required] public string Description { set { _description = value; } } // ... more code here ... } Whilst the build is running, as each task starts, the logger module receives IEventSource.TaskStarted events, subscribed to as follows: public class MyLogger : Microsoft.Build.Utilities.Logger { public override void Initialize(Microsoft.Build.Framework.IEventSource eventSource) { eventSource.TaskStarted += taskStarted; } private void taskStarted(object sender, Microsoft.Build.Framework.TaskStartedEventArgs e) { // write e.TaskName, attributes and e.Timestamp to log file } } The problem I have is that in the taskStarted() method above, I want to be able to access the attributes of the task for which the event was fired. I only have access to the logger code and cannot change either the build.xml or the custom build tasks. Can anyone suggest a way I can do this?
