• Worth it to move /var to physical disk vs logical?

  Brief question about partition layout. I use an SSD for /, /boot, /usr, & /home partitions. I'd like to move /var to a mechanical disk to minimize writes to the SSD. I'm mainly concerned about maximizing drive life rather than maximizing performance (although I obviously wouldn't want to cripple my server). My mechanical disks consist of two drives sharing LVM, and a third used for nightly rsync backups. I also have a bunch of old 2.5in hard disks lying around. My question is, should I simply create a new LVM volume '/var' on my primary data store, or would it be worth the increased energy consumption (in terms of maximizing the lifetime of the LVMed drives) to install a low volume 2.5in disk to use just for /var? On a more general level my question is about the trade offs of placing OS mounts on the same physical volumes as my data. Thanks for any help!

• Terminal Services - MS Access Frequently "Not Responding"

  Exposition: We use a program built in MS Access that I serve via Terminal Services. I just installed a new TS Server with a Quad Core 2.6GHz Xeon, 8GB RAM, and 4 SATA drives in a RAID 0. In installed Server 2008 R2 (64bit obviously). It's only role is TS. The problem: With just a few sessions (under 10), I start getting frequent Not Responding messages in each session. When it happens, the users aren't doing anything particularly taxing, just form navigation and simple insert queries. I can live with some stalls, but it is visually jarring in WS08 because the screen goes gray, and it presents a dialog offering to wait or close with some other options. Questions: Any suggestions for improving performance and reducing hangs? Is it possible to disable the dialog (always wait) and screen graying?

• SQL Server 2005: reclaiming LOB space

  Hello all, I've got an interesting table in one of my DBs that's confusing me. The table in question has a a few LOB type columns (two nvarchar(max) and a text) and it looks like there's some strange space issues going on. from this query: SELECT type_desc, SUM(total_pages) *8 [Size in kb] FROM sys.partitions p JOIN sys.allocation_units a ON p.partition_id = a.container_id WHERE p.object_id = OBJECT_ID('asyncoperationbase') GROUP BY type_desc; I get: type_desc Size in kb IN_ROW_DATA 27936 LOB_DATA 1198144 ROW_OVERFLOW_DATA 0 (there's just under 8000 rows in the table, each row has a data length of ~10k - not counting the LOB data) here's where it gets somewhat interesting: SELECT ( SUM(DATALENGTH(aob.WorkflowState)) + SUM(DATALENGTH(aob.[Message]))+ SUM(DATALENGTH(aob.[Data])) ) / 1024 FROM AsyncOperationBase aob returns: 76617 As I'm reading it - it looks like the ~75mb of LOB data is using over a gig of space to be stored - I would expect some overhead but not quit that much. • What does the "Maximum Frequency" number mean in the Windows Resource Monitor?

  In the Windows Resource Monitor's CPU tab, there is a status box and graph for the "Maximum Frequency", right next to the "CPU Usage" values. What does this mean? The value is sometimes over 100% on my system... what could that imply? By looking at CPU-z's real-time report of the processor's clock speed, it seems to be loosely related to what frequency the CPU is running at, which would imply that it means "percent of maximum possible frequency the CPU is running at"; this would be of relevance on systems with SpeedStep and/or TurboBoost technology (or similar). Furthermore, setting the system to "power saving mode" lowers the "maximum frequency" value to around 60%, while setting it to "high performance" mode sets it to around 110%. However, the percentage does not seem to exactly correlate to the CPU speed being shown. What value is this actually representing then?

• VirtualBox: Host OS processor is spiked while guest OS virtual processor is idle?

  I'm running Windows XP 32-bit on Windows Vista 64-bit with VirtualBox 3.0.6. Whenever I run the XP VM, Vista (host) reports 100% cpu utilization even though XP (guest) reports between 1-5% cpu utilization. The host box has 2 GB of physical RAM. The guest/vm is configured with 512 MB. The host box has a 64-bit AMD processor. No apps (other than VirtualBox) are running on either host, they're just idling. Any guesses as to why the host processor is spiked? I've enabled various advanced features for the XP guest in the hopes of having better performance: Settings → System → Motherboard: Enable IO APIC Settings → System → Processor: Enable PAE/NX Settings → System → Acceleration: Enable VT-x/AMD-V and Enable Nesting Paging

• SQL Server: Is it possible to prevent SQL Agent from failing a step on error?

  I have a stored procedure that runs custom backups for around 60 SQL servers (mixes 2000 through 2008R2). Occasionally, due to issues outside of my control (backup device inaccessible, network error, etc.) an individual backup on one or two databases will fail. This causes this entire step to fail, which means any subsequent backup commands are not executed and half of the databases on a given server may not be backed up. On the 2005+ boxes I am using TRY/CATCH blocks to manage these problems and continue backing up the remaining databases. On a 2000 server however, for example, I have no way to prevent this error from failing the entire step: Msg 3201, Level 16, State 1, Line 1 Cannot open backup device 'db-diff(\PATH\DB-DIFF-03-16-2010.DIF)'. Operating system error 5(Access is denied.). Msg 3013, Level 16, State 1, Line 1 BACKUP DATABASE is terminating abnormally. I am simply asking if anything like this is possible in SQL 2000 or if I need to go in a completely different direction.

• Moving distribution lists in Public Folders to Sharepoint Contacts?

  Now I know that if I connect to contact list in Sharepoint and drag and drop everything from the Exchange Public Folder contact list to the Sharepoint Contact list (connected through Outlook) it will transfer everything in the contact list to the sharepoint contact list. What about distribution lists? Has anyone had a workaround for this? If a contact list is full of distribution lists the Contacts won't migrate over and the Sync Issues - Local Failures folder is populated with all the distribution lists that couldn't be migrated. Is there a way to migrate distribution lists? Any ideas how to set up the contact list like a contact list of distrubition lists? How would that contact list look on sharepoint? Should I just leave the contact lists that have distribution lists on public folders?

It turns out the program had opened up its own webserver on the client's machine as soon as Apache went down and in the process made it impossible for the client, a large provider of business software, to restart its proper website." http://www.theregister.co.uk/2009/07/24/teamviewer_snafu/ I started using TeamViewer recently because it's just much better than UltraVNC (runs on both XP and Vista, the server dials out instead of requiring the user to open a port on their router + better performance than UVNC)... but I thought that TeamViewer had both the server and client connect out to TV's web server for data to flow between the two hosts. Why does TV even need to open a web server on the server host? Thank you.

• Concurrent backups in SQL Server?

  We currently have our backups managed by a third party company. There are a bunch of agent jobs created that take full backups (4 times a day) and transaction log backups (4 times an hour). We now want to manage our backups in house, but don't want to disable the third party's jobs until we are sure that we have everything configured correctly internally So I am proposing to have a short period (say, a couple of days) where backups are being taken both by the old and the new system. I am wondering what the ramifications of having these two different systems both manage backups, and the potential pitfalls of having backups taken simultaneously. Is this even supported? If so, and bearing in mind that the system can cope with one backup without any noticeable performance degradation, is it fairly logical to assume that it should be able to cope with two simultaneous backups? Currently the load on the server is fairly light and it rarely struggles. Any advice is appreciated

• How to recreate missing Team Foundation Server database?

  I've been trying out TFS 2010 Beta 2 on my local machine, or at least, had installed ready to do so. I had some issues with my MSSQL2008 server so I completely uninstalled and re-installed it and that sorted it. However, I'm now in limbo with TFS. I have the software installed, but it has none of the SQL databases installed that go with it. I had no data and am not precious about how to go about it. I figure completely uninstalling and re-installing might be an idea and will most likely fix it (repair didn't work). Is there a quicker way? Is there a command line utility that I can run, or a SQL script to recreate it all?

• Connecting a Mac to the office network

  Hi All, I am busy preparing to start working with a Mac at work - in addition to my old PC. Just wondered, is it difficult to setup the Mac to run on the office network - i.e. does it need any special settings or servers or anything like that? and also printers...can I use the network printer as normal. I am just pottrying to think ahead of any ential issues. Also share drives...will I be able to access share drives and my backups to these shares drives - all a bit daunting! • Best way to duplicate databases nightly?

  Hey all We just got two new servers, that are running Windows Server 2008. The intent is to make the machines pretty much identical, copying the content of the master to the slave on a nightly basis, so that if anything fails, the second copy can stand in immediately. It doesn't need to be up-to-the-minute mirroring, though I suppose that wouldn't hurt if performance is not affected. The two machines will, amongst other things, each be running an instance of SQL Server 2008. The aim is to duplicate the databases on the master down to the slave on a nightly basis. Unless I'm misunderstanding, the slave databases in mirrored databases require the primary to be present to work correctly; I'm hoping for some solution where we have a second machine that can be up and running with minimal downtime if the first one falls over. Am I misunderstanding mirroring? Is that the best way to do things, or should I use some other mechanism? If so, what?

• Keeping websites from knowing where I live

  This questions is related to issues and practicality, not security. I live in Brazil and, apparently, every single website I visit knows about it. Usually that's okay. But there are quite a few sites that don't make use of that information adequately. For instance: Bing keeps thinking that Brazilian pages are way more relevant to me than American ones (which they're not). google.com always redirects me to google.com.br Microsoft automatically sends me to horribly translated support pages in Portuguese (which would just be easier to read in English). These are just a few examples. Usually it's stuff I can live with (or work around), but some of them are just plain irritating. I have geolocation disabled in Firefox, so I guess they're either getting this information from my IP or from Windows itself (which I bought here). Is there a way to avoid this? Either tell them nothing or make them think I live somewhere else?

• Trying to determine the correct number of XFS allocation groups for postgresql server on Linux

  I am running a postgres 8.4.5 server on the linux 2.6.33.7 kernel on an 8 disk raid array with an LSI controller. Most of the tables are around 1GB or less. I know that XFS uses allocation groups (AG) to achieve I/O parallelism. My first question is, does this mean that if two tables are in the same AG, all I/O requests are queued to both of them if either is being read from/written to? If so, I assume I would want to spread my tables across as my allocation groups as possible, correct? Wouldn't this ensure that multiple users querying different tables would get the best performance?

Is there a way to download the patches/security updates in a single place (repository) and point all machines to this location? Personally, I have tools like Monolingual and Onyx, but are there tools you could recommend that affect the performance of the Operating System positively? Tweaks would be nice. • Is there any way to stop or pause Windows fake-raid re-synching?

  I have two physical disks, each one holds two volumes, they are Windows fake-RAID1. E.g.: Disk A: Partition1 Partition2 Disk B: Partition1-Mirror Partition2-Mirror After an unclean reboot, Windows started resynching these as expected. What was not expected, however, is that it started resynching both volumes at the same time. Both disks seek back and forth like crazy, and synching performance is horrible. Question: Is these any option to stop or pause synching of just one volume? I know I can put one of the disks offline, but that will stop synchronization of all volumes on that disk. Note: I have certain reasons why I need to torture myself with Windows RAID. I'm not interested in alternative RAID solutions right now.

Since we decided to push all three applications to the user .How to make the applications to use its particular version. There are few web based apps and enterprise apps which requires only a specific set of java versions which is creating issues. • Odd behavior on Shift-{Esc,Fx}

  Sometimes, when changing between the modes in Vim, I forget to take my finger off the Shift key. This innocent mistake is probably part of the luggage carried over from other terminals, but I have never seen my input treated this way. After changing from command mode to input mode, if I hit the Esc key while the Shift key is down, Vim will display <9b (Control Sequence Introducer) instead of switching to the command mode. • HTTP downloads slow - FTP of same file very fast - Windows 2003

  I am having some issues with download speeds on my site via http, i am averaging around 70kbps downloading a file that is around 70mb. But if i connect to my server via FTP and download the same file on the same computer / connection i am averaging about 300+kbps. I know my server has alot of connections at any one time, probably around 400 connections. My server has a 1gbps connection to the internet so there is plenty of bandwidth available, as proven with the FTP. I have no throttling of any kind enabled in IIS. • SMTP error 503 when sending mail with Windows Mail & Mobile Me:

  I've started getting an error on my windows machine when sending an email through Windows Mail, using Mobile Me: An unknown error has occurred. Subject 'Test' Server Error: 503 Server Response: 503 5.7.0 TLS already in use. Server: 'smtp.me.com' Windows Live Mail Error ID: 0x800CCC65 Protocol: SMTP Port: 587 Secure(SSL): Yes I've checked and double-checked my credentials, and outbound mail settings, and they're correct. I've deleted and re-added the account, and I get the same issue. I'm able to receive email fine. Note - this issue only affects one PC - my laptop has no issues. Any suggestions on what Error 503 means, or how I would fix this?

• Certain web pages are suddenly not rendering properly in FireFox

  I am using FireFox 3.6.3. I noticed in the last couple of days that several webpages which I visit regularly are not rendering properly. A lot of the text is overlapping with other text and it basically looks like the style sheet is completely screwed up. I have tried disabling all of my Add-Ons and it doesn't make a difference. When I use Coral IE Tab to render the pages using IE they display without any problems. The websites which are not rending properly for me are: The Age Google Reader One interesting thing I noticed is that if I modify the Google Reader URL to not use SSL (i.e. change https to http) it renders without any issues. However, The Age website is not using SSL, and that still doesn't render properly. I have also disabled my Proxy Server (I normally use one at work) but this doesn't make a difference either.
