  • Windows 8 Secureboot: How do you bootup from another device such as cd/dvd drive or usb flash etc.?

    On PC's and laptops running an older OS, this is just a simple matter of going into the BIOS and setting the boot sequence and putting the boot cd/dvd in the drive. In many cases you can even just hit one of the F* function keys to bring up the boot sequence menu on-the-fly during POST. The main problem I'm running into is that other devices besides the primary HD is disabled when SecureBoot is enabled. So far the only way I've gotten it to work is to disable SecureBoot and enable something called legacy mode. Needless to say this make it difficult to boot things like OS recovery tools, PartitionHD backups, Linux LiveCD's and a bunch of others. Is there another procedure for doing this since it seems to mess up the Windows 8 install? By mess up I mean that after re-enabling SecureBoot and starting Windows 8 normally, the OS goes into a 'preping repair phase' for some reason that takes forever to complete before getting into a usable desktop.

  • Windows 7 won't boot

    I installed Ubuntu from my live CD and chose to install it alongside Windows. Yesterday, everything worked just fine and I was able to boot from either OS. However today, only Ubuntu will boot and Windows 7 fails to start every time I attempt to (even after restoring my Windows 7 partition to the last known good date). What could have changed over night that caused this? I did install all the recommended updates for Ubuntu. Is my only option going to be to wipe my HDD and reinstall both Windows and Ubuntu?

  • Is it dangerous to add/remove a hard-drive to a Windows machine which is in stand by?

    Can I add a SATA drive to a Windows 7 machine which is in standby mode? The hardware supports hot-plug. Could pulling the drive out while in standby corrupt the data on the drive (unflushed caches, ...)? Does Windows flush before standing by? How about swapping a drive with another drive of different kind (SSD - mechanical disk) and size, also while in stand-by. Could the OS when waking up believe that the old drive is still there, and write to it and thus corrupt it, since the new one has different partitions and data?

    I've got Family Safety up and running nicely on a Windows 8 Surface, with two parent accounts and two child accounts. When one of the child accounts reaches its time limit, the user can "Ask a parent for more time". However, the next dialog doesn't allow the parents to choose which parent account to use - it always comes up with my account, and my wife can't log in to authorise. How can I allow the her account to allow more time/authorise sites etc? She can use the same Live login on our Windows 7 computers to control these settings, and is listed as a Parent on the Family Safety website.

  • Is there a log showing why a Windows server did not restart SQL Server after a reboot?

    Our server was rebooted after a Windows Update scheduled for 1am, but after the restart SQL Server did not start up, so our websites were unable to display. Usually this process happens with no manual intervention. Is there a log somewhere which might indicate the reason why the Windows startup process did not call SQL Server to get going again? I've looked in the Event Viewer (Application Log) and SQL's own file E:\MSSQL\MSSQL10.MSSQLSERVER\MSSQL\Log\ERRORLOG* but these only contain records of successful startup operations....nothing mentions a failed attempt to start a service or anything like that.

  • Connecting to Aerohive AP's from Laptops running Win. 7 using authentication from a Windows 2008 domain server

    I have deployed a wireless network using Aerohive access points. 2 of them are set up as radius servers. I want my users to be able to use the same user name and password they use when they log onto our domain. They are able to do this from android devices or computers running Windows 8. It will not work on Windows 7 machines. How do I remedy this situation, keeping in mind that the machines are personal machines not company owned and I will have no way to change their hardware or software.

    My mouse and track pad have suddenly stopped working on my MacBook, which is running Windows XP from BootCamp. Both the USB mouse and the trackpad work fine in OS X. The device manager says that the driver is missing or corrupt on both items (they have a yellow exclamation point). I tried uninstalling the mice, and reinstalling them. Since the USB mouse is a Logitech I tried replacing the driver with one downloaded from Logitech.com. Anyone know how I can repair the mouse driver that Windows XP is using?

    Hi, I'm trying to fix a Windows XP PC that is having a strange problem. The computer can't seem to connect to the internet, even though an internet connection is present. The router and internet is working fine as I've connected a laptop to it via LAN and wireless and both worked fine. The PC in question is connected to the router as it has an IP from the DHCP. The problem is I can't connect to nor ping any internet address from the PC. I can't even connect to the router admin itself. I've tried both LAN ports in the PC, same problem and both. I'm assuming there's a proxy or firewall on the PC stopping the connections, I just don't know how to find them or see which one is causing the issue. So my question is how do I on Windows XP display the system proxy settings and/or any firewalls that are running? Cheers.

    I run Windows 7 64bit with dual monitors at work. If i connect from home using remote desktop, the next morning i cannot wake up the monitors. The computer seems to be fine (i can connect again from another pc using remote desktop) but monitor will stay blank. I've tried unplugging the monitors and reconnecting them but still frustrating.     I'd like to set up an HTTP proxy on a windows 2003 server so that I can access blocked websites such as YouTube from behind a corporate firewall (DAMN THE MAN!). I've never done this before, so I'm not even sure if the picture I have in my head is valid or possible. So I'm stuck behind a firewall that blocks sites that I need to access occasionally but that are blocked because of abuse by slackers. I've got a Windows 2003 server hosted out on the internet (i.e., outside of this odious firewall). I know I can configure my browser to use a proxy for my HTTP traffic, so why not use my server? What I'd like to know is: Is my concept valid? Can this be done, and will it work? How do I configure my server to act as a proxy? What applications may I have to install?     I'm slowing and surely getting used to Windows 8.  It is no doubt a slow process since I still run daily on an XP machine, a Vista machine, and 3 windows 7 box. A new quirk I found regarding Windows 8.  I never thought it was important to learn how to close a "formerly known as Metro" app (what do we call those these days?).  Then I attached a portable drive to my laptop and opened up a PDF file, and I couldn't safely remove the hard drive afterwards because I did not know how to close the PDF reader app. I have since learned that if you want to close an app, you can try Alt + F4 mouse over the top left corner and swipe down, right-click to close you app Windows Key + TAB, right-click to close the app All these make me wonder, how do you do this in a phone or tablet?

I'm pretty sure this has to do with the whitespaces enclosed with ". How shall I do to make it work?

    Not sure if this is bad style, but I'm asking this question here because I couldn't find the answer elsewhere, and then I worked out one solution on my own. I'd be interested to see other people's solutions, but after a few days I'll post my own. In my specific case, I'm running on Windows 7, but I'd be interested in answers for other/older versions of Windows. I realise that one answer is "install a version of Unix find, and then solve as for Unix", but I wanted a more "native" solution. EDIT 2012-07-17: Clarification: by "automatically" I ideally mean something I can run as part of a script, rather than a GUI tool which does all the work at the press of a button, because I'll want to do this unattended.
