  I have got a laptop which is configured to have the user profile in a network drive. This is causing me a lot of headaches since the connectivity to my company is very slow. I want to relocate the profile of my user into a local directory. How do I do that? Those are the settings at the moment: C:\>set HOME HOMEDRIVE=P: HOMEPATH=\ HOMESHARE=\\SOMESERVER\_myuser$ The drive P is a network drive mapped to HOMESHARE. I can't find where windows is setting those environment variables, not even in the registry. The laptop is running Windows XP.

• How can I disable internet for a specific interface in Windows 7?

  I have two NICs on my machine, one which connects to my network and has my internet connection. The other connects to a buddy next doors network with his internet connection. I don't want Windows magically deciding which internet connection to use, I want it to use mine. I've had some success by blanking out DNS servers for his connection, but then I also lose hostname resolution on his network and I realize this doesn't solve everything 100%. How can I force Windows to use only my connection while avoiding the use of a router?

  Windows Task Manager has the ability to show the current CPU time of any given running process on windows, is there any way (not necessarily through Task Manager) to get the current wall time of a process? An example, let's say I have a script that reliably runs for about 45 minutes. Without adding a progress bar to the script, is there any way to figure out for how long it has been running? The math behind this seems pretty straight forward; WallTime = CurrentWallTime - WallTimeProcessStarted. Likewise, since the math is so simple, is there anyway to get the time that a process was started at?

  I'm using a laptop which has eSATA connection. I would like to install Windows 7 on the external disk (to have it completely separated from the OS on the internal hdd). According to the manufacturer, booting from eSATA drive won't be possible. I've checked the BIOS settings and it appears to be correct - eSATA is not even listed in the boot sequence. I'm wondering if there can be any workaround to that limitation, for example starting a custom bootloader on the USB pendrive, just to boot Windows 7 on the eSATA drive.

The later two points from previous questions are good but not a priority in the preparation of a clean install Provides a way to keep the programs updated after installation. If I can add custom installers to the software, that's a big plus. I am more concerned here about using a legitimate application I can trust to establish the basis of clean image of my operating system with all the application of choice installed without fuss and spam/bloatware.

• How can one make the title bar text/buttons have better contrast on dark colors in Windows 8?

  When Windows 8 color setting are set to a very dark color, such as black or navy blue, the title bar text and the minimize/maximize buttons are nearly invisible. This makes dark colors difficult to work with. In Windows 7 there was an advanced color options, this is gone in 8. The registry keys associated with this seem to still be present, but they have no effect. Is there a way to change this? Or a third party application that can do it? I don't want to use the ugly high contrast theme, I want to use the nice Win 8 theme with a dark color.

  I'm trying to use CLOC on Windows (XP) to count lines of code, and I can't get it to work. I downloaded the latest Win installer for CLOC 1.5.6, ran it (which caused a "DOS" window to open, scroll with text rapidly, then close before I could read anything) and then wrote cloc at the cmd prompt...and Windows doesn't recognize it as a command. Or if there is another easy-to-use lines of code counter that one could recommend (that runs on Windows), I'd be happy to try that.

  I have two data disks that were, heretofore, in a mobo RAID configuration in Windows 7. They are now separate AHCI disks, visible in Computer Management. How to I go about making them a single mirrored volume in Windows? Note: The data is backed up up on two other separate disks, but it's a fair amount of work to do a restore (over 120'000 files, and I have to reset permissions).   Does anyone know why in Windows 7 Resource Monitor shows that I have 8 GB of RAM installed on my computer, but I only have 3.2 GB available as 4.8 GB are in "Hardware Reserve". I researched this issue and tried going into msconfig and making sure that in the boot options the number of processors and max memory options were turned off. I also opened the computer up and reseated each of the memory sticks while clearing out any dust that was in there. Some info on the system I am using: OS: Windows 7 Enterprise 64-bit Edition CPU: AMD Phenom X4 9750 Memory: 4 X 2GB DDR2 memory Motherboard: MS-7548 (Aspen) Any help would be much appreciated.

  The search bar in Windows 7 is very convenient to quickly start applications by pressing the Win-key and then entering the name of the application. For applications with a Program Menu entry like Firefox, it is sufficient to type Fire and Firefox will be displayed in the Programs section of the search results. For other applications like regedit.exe, I have to type the full command regedit before the correct choice regedit.exe appears. Is there any way to have regedit.exe appear already when I have just entered a substring? Please note: I have seen Add my applications to Vista’s Start Search, but I don't want to add anything to the Start Menu manually. This question is about if there is some configuration that can be tuned to make the results appear. I have also seen Search behavior of Windows 7 start menu, but my problem is not that the exe appears under Files, regedit.exe correctly appears under Programs, but it should appear already for a substring match.

  I removed accounts that were hosted on a separate drive before upgrading to windows 8 from 7 yesterday. However, now I get the User profile service service failed the login. User Profile can not be loaded. error whenever I try to access any new account. I've attempted it: from safe mode (suggestions here ) net user test \ADD Editing the permissions on the %sysdrive%\Users\Default folder to ensure it is readable Every attempt is met with the same error. Additionally, I do not see any new entries created in the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\ProfileList registry entry. I'm not sure I understand why a failed user creation wouldn't trigger an error... but that seems to be what is happening here.

  I want to use RAID 1 on my workstation configuration at work, and I've been looking at using the build in mirror functionality in Windows 7. When you click on the add mirror option it presents you with the following warning. I've done some Google searching and the consensus seems to be that you cannot boot from a dynamic volume, but some forum posts seem to indicate that people have tried this with success (e.g. here). With Google searches producing contradictory information I thought I'd ask you guys for an authoritative answer. Can I use the inbuilt Windows 7 mirroring for my boot partition? Or as I suspect, will it make it unbootable due to it being converted to a dynamic disk?

  Specifically, I want Korean (link), but I hope this helps other people in general. According to this page, it is only possible for Ultimate and Enterprise. Specifically, I'd like to enable my keyboard to type in Korean, and I specified Korean as the input language (Start - type "Input Languages", only result). Under the General tab, I selected Add, and specified Korean.. but it doesn't work, because the language pack isn't installed I presume. Would anyone know how to add different language input / packs to Windows 7 Home Premium? Also, I tried following this tutorial on adding a language pack to HP, but the .cab keeps disappearing so it will not work. Note: Unlike the link in the tutorial as well, I do not have an option to change the display language of Windows, only the option to change input methods.

• What happened to QuickTime Pro for Windows editing features?

  I used to record screencasts in SnagIt and then edit them in QuickTime Pro on windows with no problem. I haven't done it in a few months and now when I try most of the editing features have gone whack-a-doodle. For instance, if I got to delete a few seconds of video, it actually ends up deleting 20 seconds of video. I have repeated this on various source files including the Sample.mov that comes with QT. Using Edit-Cut looks like it works, but it doesn't actually do anything. Trim still works but that appears to be it. I know at least one other person has confirmed this behaviour. Does anyone have any work arounds. I'm using Windows 7 64 bit. QT Info QT Pro 7.7.1 (1680.42) QuickTime Version 7.6.8 (1675)

I use Deja Dup for backups, and have a CD of the WUBI .iso installation file? Systeminfo gives the flavor of Windows that is running. Is there any authoritative list of names that can be returned? If so where would I find the list?   I have an old Thinkpad X60 that I'd like to wipe clean and rebuild. Seeing as this machine doesn't have an optical drive, what's the easiest way of installing Windows XP? I have an external USB hard drive available. Would it be possible to run the install from that instead? Otherwise, what options do I have? Edit: assuming we're using a USB mass storage device... Is there a BIOS setting that I would need to change, or will it configure itself automatically? Would the USB drive need to be configured in any special manner, or would simply having a copy of the Windows CD files in a directory there be sufficient? Since the first couple answers that came in were basically "yes", I guess I didn't phrase my question correctly. I'm asking for detailed instructions on how to do this, not just a sanity check that I'm headed in the right direction. Thanks!
