Revision Control System Recommendations

I've reached a point in my independent development work where I would like to start using Subversion techniques. Up to now, I've been simply making backups by exporting my current database, and zipping them together with my PHP project files. I've read some articles online and watched a video with Linus Torvalds - the general verdict seems to be that Git is in and old CVS techniques are out. I'm not currently operating under Linux, I do all PHP work out of Windows - Eclipse. Due to the fact that Eclipse runs on JVM, jumping into Linux - Eclipse will be more or less transparent - file system aside. What I would like to accomplish is being able to keep a constant revision history - But I want this to be almost entirely transparent. Also, I work in an MVC framework, and I would like to be able to release my views to Designers, and have them work from within the revision control system too. Will Egit accomplish what I need? Or is it too much overhead for a one-man workforce? What do you recommend I use so that I can keep a revision history? I also require the service to be free! Thank you all - StackOverflow ftw!

servlet connection to DB

Initially, after reading books on the subject, I firmly believed that the algorithm for working with a database from a servlet is as follows: create a connection - connect to the database - form a request - send the request to the database - get the query results - process them - close connection - OK. Now, with a better understanding of the practical side, I realized that nobody does it that way, and everything happens through a connection pool according to the following algorithm: initialize the servlet - create a connection pool - a request comes from a user - take a free connection from the pool - form a request - send the request to the database - get the query results - process them - return the connection back to the pool - ok. Now I have this problem: We have 100 users, they are divided into 10 groups, each group has it's own username and password to connect to the database. Moreover, each group may have different rights to the database. How am I supposed to use a connection pool in this situation? If I understand correctly, a pool is nothing more than just a group of similar connections with a single login and password. And here I have 10 pairs of username / password. It looks like I cannot use the pool in this situation. What should I do?

Is there a Visual Studio (or freeware) equivalent for Expression Blend's "Edit Template" feature?

In Expression Blend, you can view and edit the control template of objects in the "Objects and Timeline" panel. I'm wondering if there's an equivalent feature in Visual Studio or if there's something free (or very inexpensive) I can download that will allow me to do this. Here's a screen cap from Expression Blend that shows what I'm talking about: Doing this for DataGrid results in the following: <Style x:Key="DataGridStyle1" TargetType="{x:Type Custom:DataGrid}"> ... <Setter Property="Template"> <Setter.Value> <ControlTemplate TargetType="{x:Type Custom:DataGrid}"> ... </ControlTemplate> </Setter.Value> </Setter> <Style.Triggers> <Trigger Property="IsGrouping" Value="True"> <Setter Property="ScrollViewer.CanContentScroll" Value="False"/> </Trigger> </Style.Triggers> </Style> (The ... is of course replaced with setters and the contents of the control template.) It seems like you can do pretty much anything you can do in Blend in Studio, but this one is eluding me. Any ideas? Edit I'm also curious if this feature will be in Visual Studio 2010. Anyone know?

Getting Google repositories to work with apt-get on Ubuntu Hardy

I've installed Google Chrome on Hardy via the .deb file and would like to configure apt-get for automatic updates. [I have another machine running Ubuntu Karmic where this works fine; apt-get knows the package as 'google-chrome'; I'm now using a Dell Mini 10 with Ubuntu 8.04 LTS installed] As part of the .deb install, two entries have been added to the third- party software sources tab: http://dl.google.com/linux/deb stable main http://dl.google.com/linux/deb stable non-free main However if I check for updates with either of these clicked, I get the following error: Failed to fetch http://dl.google.com/linux/deb/dists/stable/Release Unable to find expected entry main/binary-lpia/Packages in Meta-index file (malformed Release file?) There is a thread here which indicates others have had the same problem: http://www.google.co.uk/support/forum/p/Chrome/thread?tid=097d103f87b49abe&hl=en This references a further thread: http://code.google.com/p/chromium/issues/detail?id=38608 which suggests the problem has been fixed. Despite this I remain unable to get it to work, and none of the suggested workarounds seem to work either. Ideas ? Thanks.

Synthetic click doesn't switch application's menu bar (Mac OS X)

Hi. I'm developing some sort of air mouse application for iPhone platform. This applications connects to one computer service which generates mouse events on Mac OS X. I'm generating this events with CGEventCreateMouseEvent() and CGEventPost(). But I've encountered one problem. Let's say you are using Safari and then you click on free desktop space. If you do this with regular mouse it will hide Safari's top menu bar and show Finder menu bar. But on these synthetic events it doesn't act like that. Do I have to post some other event or set some additional properties? Which web solution should I use for my project?

I'm going to create a fairly large (from my point of view anyway) web project with a friend. We will create a site with roads and other road related info. Our calculations is that we will have around 100k items in our database. Each item will contain some information like location, name etc. (about 30 thing each). We are counting on having a few hundred thousand unique visitors per month. The 100k items and their locations (that will be searchable) will be the main part of the page but we will also have some articles, comments, news and later on some more social functions (accounts, forums, picture uploads etc.). We were going to use Google AppEngine to develop our project since it is really scalable and free (at least for a while). But I'm actually starting to doubt that AppEngine is right for us. It seems to be for webbapps and not sites like ours. Which system (language/framework etc.) would you guys recommend us to use? It doesn't really mater if we know the language since before (we like learning new stuff) but it would be good if it's something that is future proof.

Entity Framework Decorator Pattern

In my line of business we have Products. These products can be modified by a user by adding Modifications to them. Modifications can do things such as alter the price and alter properties of the Product. This, to me, seems to fit the Decorator pattern perfectly. Now, envision a database in which Products exist in one table and Modifications exist in another table and the database is hooked up to my app through the Entity Framework. How would I go about getting the Product objects and the Modification objects to implement the same interface so that I could use them interchangeably? For instance, the kind of things I would like to be able to do: Given a Modification object, call .GetNumThings(), which would then return the number of things in the original object, plus or minus the number of things added by the modification. This question may be stemming from a pretty serious lack of exposure to the nitty-gritty of EF (all of my experience so far has been pretty straight-forward LOB Silverlight apps), and if that's the case, please feel free to tell me to RTFM. Navbar Dropdown in Bootstrap 3

I recently started learning and using Bootstrap 3. I figured I would start with something simple- a header and a dropdown bar. I used the code from the Bootstrap website. I started out with the basic Bootstrap template, then added the bootstrap navbar. Asynchronous Controller is blocking requests in ASP.NET MVC through jQuery

I have just started using the AsyncController in my project to take care of some long-running reports. Seemed ideal at the time since I could kick off the report and then perform a few other actions while waiting for it to come back and populate elements on the screen. My controller looks a bit like this. I tried to use a thread to perform the long task which I'd hoped would free up the controller to take more requests: public class ReportsController : AsyncController { public void LongRunningActionAsync() { AsyncManager.OutstandingOperations.Increment(); var newThread = new Thread(LongTask); newThread.Start(); } private void LongTask() { // Do something that takes a really long time //....... AsyncManager.OutstandingOperations.Decrement(); } public ActionResult LongRunningActionCompleted(string message) { // Set some data up on the view or something... return View(); } public JsonResult AnotherControllerAction() { // Do a quick task... return Json("..."); } } But what I am finding is that when I call LongRunningAction using the jQuery ajax request, any further requests I make after that back up behind it and are not processed until LongRunningAction completes. For example, call LongRunningAction which takes 10 seconds and then call AnotherControllerAction which is less than a second. AnotherControllerAction simply waits until LongRunningAction completes before returning a result. Delete on a very deep tree

I am building a suffix trie (unfortunately, no time to properly implement a suffix tree) for a 10 character set. The strings I wish to parse are going to be rather long (up to 1M characters). The tree is constructed without any problems, however, I run into some when I try to free the memory after being done with it. In particularly, if I set up my constructor and destructor to be as such (where CNode.child is a pointer to an array of 10 pointers to other CNodes, and count is a simple unsigned int): CNode::CNode(){ count = 0; child = new CNode* [10]; memset(child, 0, sizeof(CNode*) * 10); } CNode::~CNode(){ for (int i=0; i<10; i++) delete child[i]; } I get a stack overflow when trying to delete the root node. I might be wrong, but I am fairly certain that this is due to too many destructor calls (each destructor calls up to 10 other destructors). I know this is suboptimal both space, and time-wise, however, this is supposed to be a quick-and-dirty solution to a the repeated substring problem. tl;dr: how would one go about freeing the memory occupied by a very deep tree? j_security_check to SSO in different module under Oracle App Server?

I have an existing j2ee application running on Oracle App Server. It is targeted towards paying customers so the content is secured and a SSO module properly intercepts all requests for secured content. Now the company is adding a unbranded public-facing module with a number of unsecured pages. At one point the user is expected to register for a free account and log in to proceed further. Think doctors adding a public-facing site with information for potential patients, or lawyers adding a public-facing site with information for potential clients. There's some information on the session and the usual approach would be to authenticate the user, persist the session information using the now-known user id, invalidate the existing session (to prevent certain types of attacks), the reload the session information before returning to the user. I can't just persist it under the session id since that's about to change. The glitch is that the existing application already has an SSO module and I get a 404 error every time I try to direct to j_security_check. I've tried that, /sso/j_security_check, even http://localhost/sso/j_security_check, all without success. I noticed that an earlier question said that tomcat requires access to a secured page before j_security_check is even visible. I don't know if that's the case with Oracle AS. Ideas? Or is the best approach to continue arguing that we have a different user base so it would be better to handle authentication in our own module anyway?

How to get notified about changes of the history via history.pushState?

So now that HTML5 introduces history.pushState to change the browsers history, websites start using this in combination with Ajax instead of changing the fragment identifier of the URL. Sadly that means that those calls cannot be detect anymore by onhashchange. My question is: Is there a reliable way (hack? ;)) to detect when a website uses history.pushState? The specification does not state anything about events that are raised (at least I couldn't find anything). I tried to create a facade and replaced window.history with my own JavaScript object, but it didn't have any effect at all. Further explanation: I'm developing a Firefox add-on that needs to detect these changes and act accordingly. I know there was a similar question a few days ago that asked whether listening to some DOM events would be efficient but I would rather not rely on that because these events can be generated for a lot of different reasons. Update: Here is a jsfiddle (use Firefox 4 or Chrome 8) that shows that onpopstate is not triggered when pushState is called (or am I doing something wrong? Feel free to improve it!). Update 2: Another (side) problem is that window.location is not updated when using pushState (but I read about this already here on SO I think).

Convert C# (with typed events) to VB.NET

I have an ASPX page (with VB Codebehind). I would like to extend the GridView class to show the header / footer when no rows are returned. I found a C# example online (link) (source). However, I cannot convert it to VB because it uses typed events (which are not legal in VB). I have tried several free C# to VB.NET converters online, but none have worked. Please convert the example to VB.NET or provide an alternate method of extending the GridView class. Notes / Difficulties: If you get an error with DataView objects, specify the type as System.Data.DataView and the type comparison could be the following: If data.[GetType]() Is GetType(System.Data.DataView) Then Since the event MustAddARow cannot have a type in VB (and RaiseEvent event doesn't have a return value), how can I compare it to Nothing in the function OnMustAddARow()? Can I get away with this or is it just too crude and unpractical ?

I spent the whole of last night searching for a free AspNet web chat control that I could simply drag into my website. Well the search was in vain as I could not find a control that matched my needs i.e List of users, 1 to 1 chat, Ability to kick out users.. In the end I decided to create my own control from scractch. Although it works well on my machine Im concerned that It maybe a little crude and unpractical on a shared hosting enviroment. Basically this is what I did : Created an sql database that stores the chat messages. Wrote the stored procedures and and included a statement that clears old messages Then the 'crude' part : Dragged an update panel and timer control on my page Dragged a Repeater databound to the chat messages table inside the update panel Dragged another update panel and inside it put a textbox and a button Configured the timer control to tick every 5 seconds. ..and then I made it all work like this In the timer tick event I 'refreshed' the messages display by invoking Databind() on my repeater i.e protected void Timer1_Tick(object sender, EventArgs e) { MyRepeater.DataBind(); } Then in my send button click event protected void btnSend_Click(object sender, EventArgs e) { MyDataLayer.InsertMessage(Message, Sender, CurrTime); } Well It works well on my machine and Ive got the other functionalities(users list, kick out user..) to work by simply creating more tables. But like I said it seems a little crude to me. so I need a proffesional opinion. Should I run with this or try another Approach ?

Python/Sqlite app for web or desktop?

I am in the planning stages of rewriting an Access db I wrote several years ago in a full fledged program. I have very slight experience coding, but not enough to call myself a programmer by far. I'll definitely be learning as I go, so I'd like to keep everything as simple as possible. I've decided on Python and SQLite for my program, but I need help on my next decision. Here is my situation 1) It'll be a desktop program, run locally on each machine, all Windows 2) I want a nice looking GUI with colors, different shaped buttons, nice menus, lists, etc, etc 3) I'm thinking about using a browser interface because (a) from what I've read, browser apps can look really great, and (b) I understand there are lots of free tools to assist in setting up the GUI/GUI code with drag and drop tools, so that helps my "keep it simple" goal. 4) I want the program to be totally portable so it runs completely from one single folder on a user's PC. If I do go the browser app router, a major concern I have is the possibility that a user's browser settings could affect or break the app. How likely is this? What other pros and cons are there for my situation?

Choosing approach for an IM client-server app

Update: totally re-wrote this to be more succint. I'm looking at a new application, one part of which will be very similar to standard IM clients, i.e text chat, ability to send attachments, maybe some real-time interaction like a multi-user whiteboard. It will be client-server, i.e all traffic goes through my central server. That means if I want to support cross-communication with other IM systems, I am still free to pick any protocol for my own client<--server communication - my server can use XMPP or whatever to talk to other systems. Clients are expected to include desktop apps, but probably also browser-based as well either through Flex/Silverlight or HTML/AJAX. I see 3 options for my own client-server communication layer: XMPP. The benefits are clients already exist as do open-source servers. However it requires the most up-front research/learning and also appears like it might raise legal issues due to GPL. Custom sockets. A server app makes connections with the clients, allowing any text/binary data to be sent very fast. However this approach requires building said server from scratch, and also makes a JS client tricky Servlets (or similar web server). Using tried and tested Java web-stack, clients send HTTP requests similar to AJAX-based websites. The benefit is the server is easy to write using well-established technologies, and easy to talk to. But what restrictions would this bring? Is it appropriate technology for real-time communication? Advice and suggests are welcome, especially what pros and cons surround using a web-server approach as compared to a socket-based approach.

Error: undefined method `contact' for nil:NilClass

I have a ruby/rails/hobo system that someone wrote a couple years ago, that I need to port to the latest version of ruby/rails/hobo. It seems that ruby doesn't care about backward compatibility, so code that used to work in the old app doesn't work anymore: In the observation.rb model file, the old app has this: belongs_to :survey has_one :site, :through => :survey def create_permitted? acting_user == self.survey.contact or acting_user.administrator? end survey.rb model file has this: belongs_to :contact, :class_name => 'User', :creator => true Unfortunately the code in observation.rb doesn't work under the new ruby/rails/hobo, and it gives me the error: NoMethodError in Observations#index Showing controller: observations; dryml-tag: index-page where line #1 raised: undefined method `contact' for nil:NilClass Extracted source (around line #1): 0 Rails.root: /home/simon/ruby/frogwatch2 Application Trace | Framework Trace | Full Trace app/models/observation.rb:48:in `create_permitted?' Looking for a good C++/.net book

I have recently started to feel that I need to greatly improve my C++ skills especially in the realm of .net. I graduated from a good four year university with a degree in computer science about 9 months ago and I have since been doing full time contract work for a small software company in my local area. Most of my work has been done using Java/lisp/cocoa/XML and before that most of my programming in my senior year was in java/C#. I did a decent amount of C++ in my Sophomore year and in my free time before that but I feel that my general knowledge of C++/.net is very lacking for the opportunities that are now coming my way. Can anyone recommend a good book that could help me get up too speed? I feel I do not need a very basic introduction to C++ but something that covers the fundamentals of .net would be good for me. So basically what I need is a book or books that would be good for a .net novice and a C++ developer who is just beyond novice. Also, a book that would help bein an interview by giving me a conversional understanding of C++ would be great. Thanks a lot!.

What am I doing wrong? I tried the same code on Windows and it works well but on Linux it crashes.

PC to Macbook Pro Transition - Getting (re)started?

I'm in my second computer science course right now. I've enjoyed programming so far, but really have just scraped my way by. I've not done much programming outside of required class work. For similar reasons, I never really invested in downloading/learning software to help me program (IDE's, editors, compilers, etc). I know it sounds tedious, but my current setup is: notepad++ for coding; Filezilla to transfer .cpp & .h files to school's aludra/unix and compiling; unix tells me where my bugs are and I go back to notepad++ to debug; repeat until done. This isn't fun - and I know it could be easier. But I put it off knowing that I was soon going to switch to a Mac. And, tomorrow, I'm switching. So... How should I set up my Macbook for the best programming experience? What IDEs and editors and debuggers and so on should I download? How will Mac programming differ from PC? I'm open to all ideas and comments, even the most basic. (Background - I'm learning/programming in C++ right now. Next semester, my classes switch to Java. I'm also going to take a class in web development, with HTML/CSS/Javascript/PHP. My new laptop will be a late 2009 Macbook Pro with Leopard, or maybe Snow Leopard. Free would be preferrable for all programs.) Thank you all.

Simple but Customizable CRM?

I'm trying to find a good Church Management System (ChMS). Essentially, a CRM for churches. My budget is about $0...so open source or in-house development is preferred (and by in-house, I mean me). I'm wondering if anyone could make some recommendations as to possibilities? I'm open to SaaS solutions as well. For those interested in more details...: I've looked at Zoho CRM and while I like it, they only offer three licenses free, an insignificant discount for non-profits, etc. I've looked at Salesforce's NPSF which is nice but almost too much for a small church. Additionally, its taking a long time to jump through all the hoops necessary to get the licenses. I'm wondering if some combination of Wufoo and similar SaaS apps. might offer what I'm looking for? I've looked at Google spradsheets...if only they had a db application. :P Its really pretty simple what I need...something to maintain contact info., to remember important dates, to keep dates, to schedule followups, etc.

c++ malloc segmentation fault

I have a problem about malloc(). It is weird. My code is in the following. I use random generator to generate elements for an array. The array is opened by malloc(). If the array size is smaller than 8192, it is OK.
