• Proper way to add record to many to many relationship in Django

  First off, I'm planning on running my project on google app engine so I'm using djangoappengine which as far as I know doesn't support django's ManyToManyField type. Because of this I've setup my models like this: from django.db import models from django.contrib.auth.models import User class Group(models.Model): name = models.CharField(max_length=200) class UserGroup(models.Model): user = models.ForeignKey(User) group = models.ForeignKey(Group) On a page I have a form field where people can enter a group name. I want the results from this form field to create a UserGroup object for the user - group combination and if the group doesn't yet exist create a new Group object. At first I started putting this logic in the UserGroup class with a add_group method but quickly realized that it doesn't really make sense to put this in the UserGroup class. What would the proper way of doing this be? I saw some stuff about model managers. Is this what those are for?

• C# and WUAPI: BeginDownload function

  first things first: I have no experience in object-oriented programming, whatsoever. I created my share of VB scripts and a bit of Java in school, but that's it. So my problem most likely lies there. But nevertheless, for the past few days, I've been trying to get a little application together that allows me to scan for, select and install Windows updates. So far I've been able to understand most of the reference and with the help of a few posts around the internet and I'm now at the point where I can select and download updates. So far I've been able to download a collection of updates using the following code: UpdateCollection CurrentInstallCollection = (UpdateCollection)e.Argument; UpdateDownloader CurrentDownloader = CurrentSession.CreateUpdateDownloader(); CurrentDownloader.Updates = CurrentInstallCollection; This is run in a background worker and returns once the download is done. It works just fine, I can see the updates getting downloaded on the file system but there isn't really a way to display the progress within the application. To do such a thing, there is the IDownloadJob interface that allows me to use the .BeginDownload method of the downloader (UpdateSession.CreateUpdateDownloader)...i think, at least. :D And here comes the problem: I have now tried for about 6 hours to get the code working, but no matter what I tried nothing worked. Also, there isn't much information around on the internet about the .BeginDownload method (or at least it seems that way), but my call of the method doesn't work: IDownloadJob CurrentDownloadJob = CurrentDownloader.BeginDownload(); I have no clue what arguments to supply...I've tried methods, objects...to no avail. The complete block of code looks like this: UpdateCollection CurrentInstallCollection = (UpdateCollection)e.Argument; UpdateDownloader CurrentDownloader = CurrentSession.CreateUpdateDownloader(); CurrentDownloader.Updates = CurrentInstallCollection; IDownloadJob CurrentDownloadJob = CurrentDownloader.BeginDownload(); IDownloadProgress CurrentJobProgess = CurrentDownloadJob.GetProgress(); tbStatus.Text = Convert.ToString(CurrentJobProgess.PercentComplete); I've found one source on the internet that called the method with .BeginDownload(this,this,this), which does not report any error in the code editor but probably won't help with reporting as it is my understanding, that the arguments supplied are the methods that are called when the described event occurrs (progress has changed or the download has finished). • Building Dynamic Classes in Objective C

  I'm a somewhat competent ruby programmer. Yesterday I decided to finally try my hand with Apple's Cocoa frameworks. Help me see things the ObjC way? I'm trying to get my head around objc_allocateClassPair and objc_registerClassPair. My goal is to dynamically generate a few classes and then be able to use them as I would any other class. Does this work in Obj C? Having allocated and registered class A, I get a compile error when calling [[A alloc] init]; (it says 'A' Undeclared). I can only instantiate A using runtime's objc_getClass method. Is there any way to tell the compiler about A and pass it messages like I would NSString? A compiler flag or something? I have 10 or so other classes (B, C, …), all with the same superclass. I want to message them directly in code ([A classMethod], [B classMethod], …) without needing objc_getClass. Am I trying to be too dynamic here or just botching my implementation? It looks something like this… NSString *name = @"test"; Class newClass = objc_allocateClassPair([NSString class], [name UTF8String], 0); objc_registerClassPair(newClass); id a = [[objc_getClass("A") alloc] init]; NSLog(@"new class: %@ superclass: %@", a, [a superclass]); //[[A alloc] init]; blows up.

• Vaadin table hide columns and container customization

  Hello I am testing a project, using Vaadin and Hibernate. I am trying to use the HbnContainer class to show data into table. The problem is that I do not want to show all the properties of the two classes in the table. For example: @Entity @Table(name="users") class User { @Id @GeneratedValue(strategy=GenerationType.AUTO) private Long id; private String name; @ManyToOne(cascade=CascadeType.PERSIST) private UserRole role; //getters and setters } and a second class: @Entity @Table(name="user_roles") class UserRole { @Id @GeneratedValue(strategy=GenerationType.AUTO) private Long id; private String name; //getters and setters } Next, I retrieve my data using the HbnContainer, and connect it to the table: HbnContainer container = new HbnContainer(User.class, app); table.setContainerDataSource(container); The Table will only display the columns from User, and for the "role" it will put the role id instead. How can I hide that column, and replace it with the UserRole.name ? I managed to use a ColumnGenerator() to get the string value in the table, for the UserRole - but I couldn't remove the previous column, with the numerical value. What am I missing? Or, what is the best way to "customize" your data, before displaying a table (if i want to show data in a table from more than one object type.. what do I do?) If I can't find a simple solution soon, I think I will just build the tables "by hand".. So, any advice on this matter? Thank you, Alex

  I have several page methods defined in the code behind of an aspx page. I have several JS calls (see example below), one after the other, in the ready() method of JQuery to call these page methods. I noticed the javascript calls run asynchronously but the .NET page methods do not run in parallel. Page method 1 finishes first before page method 2 runs. Is there a way to get all the page methods to run all at the same time? My workaround is to put each method in its own aspx page or use iframes but I am looking for better solutions. $.ajax({ type: "POST", url: (page/methodname), data: "{}", contentType: "application/json; charset=utf-8", dataType: "json", success: function(msg) { .... } } });

  Like in this question, except I want to be able to have querysets that return a mixed body of objects: >>> Product.objects.all() [<SimpleProduct: ...>, <OtherProduct: ...>, <BlueProduct: ...>, ...] I figured out that I can't just set Product.Meta.abstract to true or otherwise just OR together querysets of differing objects. Fine, but these are all subclasses of a common class, so if I leave their superclass as non-abstract I should be happy, so long as I can get its manager to return objects of the proper class. The query code in django does its thing, and just makes calls to Product(). Sounds easy enough, except it blows up when I override Product.__new__, I'm guessing because of the __metaclass__ in Model... I have variously tried super(A, cls), Top, super(A, A), and all of the above in combination with passing cls in as the first argument to __new__, all to no avail. Why is this kicking me so hard? Do I have to figure out django's metaclasses to be able to fix this or is there a better way to accomplish my ends?

  I have several Delphi Prism classes with indexed properties that I use a lot on my C# web applications (we are migrating a big Delphi Win32 system to ASP.Net). My problem is that it seems that C# can't see the indexed properties if they aren't the default properties of their classes. Maybe I'm doing something wrong, but I'm completely lost. I know that this question looks a lot like a bug report, but I need to know if someone else knows how to solve this before I report a bug. If I have a class like this: TMyClass = public class private ... method get_IndexedBool(index: Integer): boolean; method set_IndexedBool(index: Integer; value: boolean); public property IndexedBool[index: Integer]: boolean read get_IndexedBool write set_IndexedBool; default; // make IndexedBool the default property end; I can use this class in C# like this: var myObj = new TMyClass(); myObj[0] = true; However, if TMyClass is defined like this: TMyClass = public class private ... method get_IndexedBool(index: Integer): boolean; method set_IndexedBool(index: Integer; value: boolean); public property IndexedBool[index: Integer]: boolean read get_IndexedBool write set_IndexedBool; // IndexedBool is not the default property anymore end; Then the IndexedBool property becomes invisible in C#. To this subclass I have added working implementations of numberOfSectionsInTableView: tableView:numberOfRowsInSection: and tableView:cellForRowAtIndexPath: and the Table View's dataSource and delegate are connected to this class via the File Owner in Interface Builder. The above configuration works with no problems. The issue occurs when I want to move this Table View's dataSource and delegate implementations out to a separate class, most likely because there are other controls on the View besides the Table View and I'd like to move the Table View-related code out to its own class. To accomplish this, I try the following: Create a new subclass of UITableViewController in Xcode Move the known-good implementations of numberOfSectionsInTableView: tableView:numberOfRowsInSection: and tableView:cellForRowAtIndexPath: to the new subclass Drag a Table View Controller to the top level of the existing XIB in InterfaceBuilder, delete the View/TableView that are automatically created for this Table View Controller, then set the Table View Controller's class to match the new subclass Remove the previously-working Table View's existing dataSource and delegate connections and connect them to the new Table View Controller When complete, I do not have a working Table View. I end up with one of three outcomes which can seemingly happen at random: When the Table View loads, I get a runtime error indicating I am sending tableView:cellForRowAtIndexPath: to an object which does not recognize it When the Table View loads, the project breaks into the debugger without error There is no error, but the Table View does not appear With some debugging and having created a basic project just to reproduce this issue, I am usually seeing the 3rd option above (no error but no visible table view). I added some NSLog calls and found that although numberOfSectionsInTableView and numberOfRowsInSection are both getting called, cellForRowAtIndexPath is not. I am convinced I'm missing something really simple and was hoping the answer may be obvious to someone with more experience than I have. If this doesn't turn out to be an easy answer I would be happy to update with some code or a sample project. Thanks for your time! Complete steps to reproduce: Create a new iPhone OS, View-Based Application in Xcode and call it TableTest Open TableTestViewController.xib in Interface Builder and drag a Table View onto the provided view surface. Connect the Table View's dataSource and delegate outlets to File's Owner, which should already represent the TableTestViewController class. Save your changes Back in Xcode, add the following code to TableTestViewController.m: - (NSInteger)numberOfSectionsInTableView:(UITableView *)tableView { NSLog(@"Returning num sections"); return 1; } - (NSInteger)tableView:(UITableView *)tableView numberOfRowsInSection:(NSInteger)section { NSLog(@"Returning num rows"); return 1; } - (UITableViewCell *)tableView:(UITableView *)tableView cellForRowAtIndexPath:(NSIndexPath *)indexPath { NSLog(@"Trying to return cell"); static NSString *CellIdentifier = @"Cell"; UITableViewCell *cell = [tableView dequeueReusableCellWithIdentifier:CellIdentifier]; if (cell == nil) { cell = [[[UITableViewCell alloc] initWithFrame:CGRectZero reuseIdentifier:CellIdentifier] autorelease]; } cell.text = @"Hello"; NSLog(@"Returning cell"); return cell; } Build and Go, and you should see the word Hello appear in the TableView Now to attempt to move this TableView's logic out to a separate class, first create a new file in Xcode, choosing UITableViewController subclass and calling the class TableTestTableViewController Remove the above code snippet from TableTestViewController.m and place it into TableTestTableViewController.m, replacing the default implementation of these three methods with ours. Back in Interface Builder within the same TableTestViewController.xib file, drag a Table View Controller into the main IB window and delete the new Table View object that automatically came with it Set the class for this new Table View Controller to TableTestTableViewController Remove the dataSource and delegate bindings from the existing, previously-working Table View and reconnect the same two bindings to the new Table Test Table View Controller we created. Save changes, Build and Go, and if you're getting the results I'm getting, note the Table View no longer functions properly Solution: With some more troubleshooting and some assistance from the iPhone Developer Forums at https://devforums.apple.com/message/5453, I've documented a solution! The main UIViewController subclass of the project needs an outlet pointing to the UITableViewController instance. To accomplish this, simply add the following to the primary view's header (TableTestViewController.h): #import "TableTestTableViewController.h" and IBOutlet TableTestTableViewController *myTableViewController; Then, in Interface Builder, connect the new outlet from File's Owner to Table Test Table View Controller in the main IB window. No changes are necessary in the UI part of the XIB. Simply having this outlet in place, even though no user code directly uses it, resolves the problem completely. • Cannot run Android "Camera Preview" sample

  The sample I'm referring to is: CameraPreview. The program simply force closes upon start up. I've also tried other camera demos that have the same problem. I'm trying to run the samples on my Nexus One and the emulator with the same problem on both. I'm not even sure if the emulator should be able to run them or not.
