Why are so many questions closed? [migrated]

I just joined this stackexchange, and I'm sure this question will get closed like so many others as being subjective or "not constructive". I did a quick count on the first few pages, and it looks like at least 10% of questions are closed. One page I saw had 22 out of 50 questions closed. What does closing so many questions solve? Apparently it does not reduce the number of "bad questions". Instead it just prevents people who would otherwise be interested in answering from doing so. Why can't the people who dislike all these questions just.. not answer?

FTP client says directory permissions are 0000

I encountered a problem that appears to be related to permissions (same as this one). When I looked at the permissions of various directories in FireFTP, they all were 0000, which is obviously nonsense, since all the other pages are served without any problems. I only have ftp access, and I think it’s a Windows server (The header says "Server: Microsoft-IIS/7.5"). I’ve tried a different ftp client, with the same result. Changing the permissions results in a "'SITE CHMOD 764 [directory]': command not understood" error. A search on Google and SO for "permissions windows 0000" and similar queries didn’t turn up anything. How can I view and change the actual permissions?

Organize a game set

I'm developing a endless running game and I'm not really sure on how to make the set. The first approach was to make a BIG set like 10240x3072 pixels so that we have a nice portion of set. After having like 3 or 4 sets that go along with each other I would work on making their elements sequential and repeatable. However this is getting really heavy for the iPad 1 (it's running good in the iPad 2 and the New iPad) even though I'm splitting all the set in slices through Photoshop. For the implementation I'm using Cocos2D. Is there any better approach to make something like this but truly efficient for the iPad memory? Thank you.

Prefer examples over Documentation. Is it a behavioral problem?

Whenever I come across a new api or programming language or even simple Linux MAN pages, I always (ever since I remember) avoided then and instead lazily relied on examples for gaining understanding of new concepts. Subconsciously, I avoid documentation/api whenever it is not straight forward or cryptic or just plain boring. It's been years since I began programming and now I feel like I need to mend my ways as I now realize that I'm causing more damage by refraining from reading cryptic/difficult documentation as it is still a million times better than examples as the official documentation has more coverage than any example out there. So even after realizing that examples should be treated as "added" value instead of the "primary" source for learning. How do I break this bad habit as a programmer or am I over thinking? Any wisdom from fellow programmers is appreciated.

Large Sprite Performance

I've got a large Sprite generated using a set of vertices(x,y coordinates) and a bitmap pattern (using moveTo, lineTo, beginBitmapFill, endFill ...etc). It's about 15000 pixels wide and between 1500 - 2000 pixels high depending on the level -it's the terrain for a 2D game. My question is: what is the best way to display/move it on the stage - performance wise? Currently I'm just adding it to the stage as is...I get decent frame rate/ memory/ cpu usage but I want to optimize it for slower PCs. Any ideas? I've been reading a little about blitting but I'm not sure how to implement it in my case. Thanks.

How to get started on working with WebTrends locally using a DEV account access? [on hold]

I'm a newbie developer on WebTrends Analytics, although I have worked extensively on Adobe SiteCatalyst. Currently I want to integrate WebTrends with the web pages of a local project on my local JBoss EAP application server, so that I can run it locally and see how WebTrends work, along with how the Analytics reports show up. Later on, I may customize the reports data as per the project requirements. However, I can't find anywhere how I can start working on a local development process using a DEV account access. I'm mainly trying to get data on number of user visits per day, as of now, which will cater to multichannel experience. And later on, I will start pulling more data based on targeting and segmentation. Can anyone of you please help and guide me in the right direction? Any help is highly appreciated. Thank you!

403 error after adding javascript to masterpage for sharepoint.

I am attempting to add highslide-with-html.js from http://highslide.com/ to my masterpage. I am receiving a 403 forbidden error when I use the provided masterpage. I have placed it in C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\web server extensions\12\TEMPLATE\LAYOUTS\1033. Test javascript files such as pirate.js which consists solely of alert("Arr!"); have loaded from the same directory. I have provided the code for the masterpage. } virtual public void onRightReleased() { } virtual public void onMiddleReleased() { } } } The issue I have is that I have all these have event styled methods, especially in ClxButton with all the onLeftClick, onRightClick, etc, etc. Is there a better way for me to handle these events to be a lot more easier for a programmer to use? I was looking at normal events on some other sites, (I'd post them but I need more rep.) and didn't really see a good way to implement delegate events into my framework. I'm not really sure how these events work, could someone possibly lay out how these events are processed for me? TL:DR * Is there a better way to handle events like this? * Are events a viable solution to this problem? Thanks in advance for any help.

struts2-json-plugin not retrieving json data from action class for Struts-JQuery-Plugin grid

Hello, Im having an issue getting json working with the struts-jquery-plugin-2.1.0 I have included the struts2-json-plugin-2.1.8.1 in my classpath as well. Im sure that I have my struts-jquery-plugin configured correctly because the grid loads, but doesnt load the data its supposed to get from the action class that has been json'ized. The documentation with the json plugin and the struts-jquery plugin leaves ALOT of gaps that I cant even find with examples/tutorials, so I come to the community at stackoverflow. My action class has a property called gridModel thats a List with a basic POJO called Customer. Customer is a pojo with one property, id. I have a factory that supplies the populated List to the actions List property which i mentioned called gridModel. WPF TreeView Virtualization

I'm trying to figure out this virtualization feature, I'm not sure if I'm understanding it wrong or what's going on, but I'm using the ANTS memory profiler to check the number of items in a virtualized TreeView, and it just keeps increasing. I have a TreeView with 1,001 items (1 root, 1000 sub-items), and I always get up to 1,001 TreeViewItems, 1,001 ToggleButtons and 1,001 TextBlocks. Isn't virtualization supposed to re-use the items? If so, why would I have 1,001 of each? Also, the CleanUpVirtualizedItem never fires. Let me know if I'm understanding this wrong and if you have resources on how to use this. I've searched over the internet but haven't found anything useful. EDIT: Even the memory used by the tree grows from aporx. 4mb to 12mb when I expand and scroll through all the items. Windows 7 intermittently drops wired internet/lan connection.

In a nutshell, my Windows 7 Ultimate PC intermittently drops it's internet connection. Why? Background: My PC is wired to my ADSL modem/router which is directly connected to the phone line. I also have wireless connectivity turned on within the router for a laptop to connect wirelessly. Every few hours or so, when using my PC, I find I cannot access the internet and pages will not load. Eventually, Windows7 will update the network icon in the task-tray to show the exclamation mark symbol on the network icon. Opening up the Network And Sharing Centre will show the red cross between the "Multiple Networks" and "The Internet". Here's a picture of the "Network And Sharing Centre" (grabbed when everything was working!) As you can see, I'm running Sun's VirtualBox on this machine and that creates a Network connection for itself. This doesn't seem to affect the intermittent dropping (i.e. the intermittent drops occur whether the VirtualBox connection is in use or not). When the connection does drop, I cannot access any internet pages, nor can I access the router's web admin page at http://192.168.1.1/, so I'm assuming I've lost all local LAN access too. It's definitely not the router (or the internet connection itself) as my laptop, using the wireless connection (and running Vista Home Premium) continues to be able to access the internet (and the router's web admin pages) just fine. Every time this happens, I can immediately restore all internet and LAN access by opening Network Adapter page, disabling the "Local Area Connection" and then re-enabling it. Give it a few seconds and everything is fine again. I assume this is because, beneath the GUI, it's effectively doing an "ipconfig /release" then "ipconfig /renew". Why does this happen in the first place, though? I've googled for this and seen quite a few other people (even on MSDN/Technet forums) experiencing the same or almost the same problem, but with no clear resolution. Suggestions of turning off IPv6 on the LAN adapter, and ensuring there's no power management "sleeping" the network adapter have been tried but do not cure the problem. There does not seem to be any particular sequence of events that cause it to happen either. I've had it go twice in 20 minutes when just randomly browsing the web with no other traffic, and I've also had it go once then not go again for 2-3 hours with the same sort of usage. Can anyone tell me why this is happening and how to make it stop? EDIT: Additional information based upon the answer provided so far: Firstly, I forgot the mention that this is Windows 7 64 bit if that makes any difference at all. I mentioned that I don't think the VirtualBox network adpater is causing this problem in any way, and I also have VirtualBox installed on two other machines, one running Vista Home Premium and the other running XP. Neither of these machine experience the same network connectivity issues as the Windows 7 machine. The IP assignment for the Windows 7 machine is the same both before and after the "drop". I have a DHCP server on the router issuing IP Addresses, however my Windows 7 machine uses a static address. Here's the output from "ipconfig": Ethernet adapter Local Area Connection: Connection-specific DNS Suffix . : Description . . . . . . . . . . . : Realtek PCIe GBE Family Controller DHCP Enabled. . . . . . . . . . . : No Autoconfiguration Enabled . . . . : Yes IPv4 Address. . . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.1.2(Preferred) Subnet Mask . . . . . . . . . . . : 255.255.255.0 Default Gateway . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.1.1 DNS Servers . . . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.1.1 NetBIOS over Tcpip. . . . . . . . : Enabled Within the system's event logs, the only event that relates to the connection dropping is a "DNS Client Event" and this is generated after the connection has dropped and is an event detailing that DNS information can't be found for whatever website I may be trying to access, just as the connection drops: Log Name: System Source: Microsoft-Windows-DNS-Client Event ID: 1014 Task Category: None Level: Warning Keywords: User: NETWORK SERVICE Description: Name resolution for the name weather.service.msn.com timed out after none of the configured DNS servers responded. The network adapter chipset is Realtek PCIe GBE Family Controller and I have confirmed that this is the correct chipset for the motherboard (Asus M4A77TD PRO), and in fact, Windows Update installed an updated driver for this on 12/Jan/2009. The details of the update say that it's a Realtek software update from December 2009. Incidentally, I was still having the same intermittent problems prior to this update. It seems to have made no difference at all. EDIT 2 (1 Feb 2010): In my quest to solve this problem, I have discovered some more interesting information. On another forum, someone suggested that I should try running Windows in "Safe Mode With Networking" and see if the problem continues to occur. This was a fantastic suggestion and I don't know why I didn't think of it sooner myself. So, I proceeded to run in Safe Mode with Networking for a number of hours, and amazingly, the "drops" didn't occur once. It was a positive discovery, however, due to the intermittent nature of the original problem, I wasn't completely convinced that the problem was cured. One thing I did note is that the fan on my GFX card was running alot louder than normal. This is due to the fact that I have an ASUS ENGTS250 graphics card (http://www.asus.com/product.aspx?P_ID=B6imcoax3MRY42f3) which had a known problem with a noisy fan until a BIOS update fixed the issue. (See the "Manufacturer Response" here: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814121334 for details). Well, running in safe mode had the fan running (incorrectly) at full speed (as it did before the BIOS update), but with an (apparently) stable network connection. Obviously some driver was not loaded for the GFX card when in Safe Mode so this got me thinking about the GFX card (since the very noisy fan was quite obvious when running in Safe Mode). I rebooted into normal mode, and found that Nvidia had a very up-to-date new driver for my GFX card (only about 1 week old), so I downloaded the appropriate driver and installed it. After installation and a reboot, I was able to use my PC for an entire day with NO NETWORK DROPS!!! This was on Saturday. However, on the Sunday, I also had my PC for pretty much the entire day and experienced 2 network drops. No other changes have been made to my PC in this time. So, the story seems to be that updating my graphics card drivers seems to have improved (if not completely fixed) the issue, however, I'm still searching for a proper fix for this problem. Hopefully, this information may help anyone who may have additional ideas as to why this problem is occuring in the first place. (And why does new GFX card drivers have anything to do with the network?) I appreciate everyone's feedback so far. However, I'll have to ask once more if anyone has any further ideas of how to fix this particular problem? Thanks in advance.
